York Times Magazine in October. The piece by Paul Tough was entitled, “What if the secret to success is failure?” (In case you missed it, scan the QR code at left with your smart phone to read the story.)

Could it be that failure is making a comeback? Or, at the very least, that there is growing recognition that students learn from making mistakes? Another article in July’s Atlantic Monthly by Lori Gottlieb, entitled “How to Land Your Kid in Therapy,” concluded that “in shielding students from discomfort, failure, and struggle, we are actually making it harder for our children to grow up.”

Tough’s article describes the efforts of two school leaders to bring character education into their school curriculum, and the work of former EA parent and noted Penn psychologist, Marty Seligman, to train students to develop specific character traits.

Episcopal was part of the early conversations with the Seligman team, and back on the Merion Campus some six years ago, we brought in Seligman’s colleague, Angela Duckworth, to talk with our faculty about teaching resilience to our students. Following that session and some additional faculty training, we developed the resiliency curriculum which we continue to teach to our sixth grade students. We fully subscribe to Seligman’s notion that young people need to develop resilience, or “grit,” in order to be able to see long-term projects through to completion and in order to overcome challenges that initially seem overwhelming.

We are constantly telling children that we want them to take risks and that we want them to take on new challenges. We know they will not always succeed in everything they do, but what better place— what safer place—to try and come up short than at Episcopal Academy, where we have teachers who are used to creating soft landings for talented and determined boys and girls. At EA, we have JV and third teams for students who need more practice in order to make the varsity. Here we have full-time counselors, three chaplains, and a wonderful Chapel program. We have a new study skills class to help Upper School students adjust to the challenges of high school. Here we send all our ninth graders to the North Carolina Outward Bound School so they can have a common experience and bond as a class, but most importantly, so that they can all step outside their comfort zones and develop grit. I have stood with our ninth graders as they don their harnesses under the shadow of a rock face at Outward Bound, just as I have stood with students as they struggle with stage fright just before they make their entrance on stage or present in Chapel. In all experiences at Episcopal, I have seen students try and fail, curse and cry, but almost always, after some initial setbacks, I see them climb higher than they ever thought possible, and experience the satisfaction that comes with overcoming a true challenge. We send your children in to the woods of North Carolina and to speak in Chapel precisely because we know they will be uncomfortable and struggle. That is the point.

However, through that struggle comes the resilience and self-confidence that will carry over into classes and relationships and all manner of challenging situations that they will face later in life. At Episcopal,

in order to promote growth, we need to encourage our students to take more risks, and we as parents need to be more willing to let our children struggle and to occasionally experience failure.

We all recognize the importance of getting good grades and being accepted to colleges and universities, and I am not advocating that your child should fail their high school exams. That being said, we should let them go out on an academic limb, let them learn to fight their own battles, let them try a class that will really stretch them, and help them to understand that very seldom do all of us get it right the first time. We learn through practice, through trial and error, and through developing the resilience that will keep bringing us back until we get it right.

Of course, it is equally important to provide the support that makes positive risk-taking possible. To nurture our students means to help them up when they fall, to give them advice and guidance, to push them to work together, and to encourage them to try again. Support isn’t just about helping students when they fail, but also entails building up their confidence to succeed. That is what we do best. More than just preparing students for college, we have always seen it as our job to educate them for life—to help our students to lead lives of purpose, faith, and integrity. As a faculty we are fully focused on creating a supportive and nurturing environment for your children at Episcopal. We want soft landings. Nurture is a key component of our new mission statement, but the matching bookend to nurture is challenge, and challenge is uncomfortable. Challenge involves struggle, and sometimes, even failure. I am convinced that true growth comes from taking on serious challenges in a supportive environment, and that is what we will be focused on this year at Episcopal.

For more than 225 years, providing talented young men and women with opportunity and the chance to reach their full potential has been a quiet, yet targeted, intention of The Episcopal Academy community.

The Gift of Education In the Episcopal Academy archives there is a large, fragile piece of paper with faded script across the top that reads, “Dr. Wm White sundry corporations for the relief of widows and children of deceased clergymen.” The page, bearing the date 1785, is a ledger that listed students and their tuitions, which were paid for by White himself, so that they could attend The Episcopal Academy during its seminal years.

Always thought to be a modern concept, many would be surprised to learn that the granting of what we would call financial aid today began during the late 1700s within the Episcopal Church through what was known as the Free School project. Until 1836 there were no public schools; all schools were private, but certainly not everyone could afford to pay for their education. The late 1790s saw the birth of the Free School movement in Philadelphia, which was supported by the Episcopal churches’ charity sermons. Money was raised so that a certain number of children could attend school for free. There were two Free Schools in Philadelphia during the early and mid-1800s, and Episcopal happened to be one.

Just as it is today, Episcopal’s early leaders were determined to educate the best and the brightest students and prepare them to be the leaders of their generation, regardless of their ability to pay full tuition. This tradition of assisting with the cost of education also has its roots in the Episcopal faith.

Almost every religion has a culture of giving. When interviewed for this article, Episcopal Academy Chaplain, James Squire, illustrated his feelings about financial aid by referencing a Bible passage from the Gospel of Luke that is heard often within EA’s walls: “To whom much is given, much is expected.” Helping, reaching out, and supporting young people is a basic principle of many schools and most certainly Episcopal.

“Our aid recipients are some of our most talented students and contributors to the school community and they help us to better reflect the economic, religious, and racial diversity of this great region.”

A Sampling of Named Endowed Scholarship Funds There are currently 50 named endowed scholarships at Episcopal. Below is a sampling of just a few of these terrific funds. Buckley Scholars Fund Established in 1999 by Walter W. Buckley, Jr. ’55 to honor his family’s ties to the school which extend over several generations.

The fund provides financial aid and summer enrichment to talented students. Grants are reviewed and renewed annually based on demonstration of financial need, academic performance, and citizenship.

Christopher W. Church ’72 Scholarship Fund Established in 1999 by a couple in memory of their close friend Chris Church ’72, in appreciation of the lifelong opportunities Episcopal had given them, their family, and Chris’s other friends.

The fund provides financial aid to Upper School students in need who exhibit academic excellence and enthusiasm for the experience presented by the school.

create opportunities for those whose options were previously limited.”

Clark has been credited with shining a spotlight on endowed scholarships (see below “A Sampling of Named Endowed Scholarship Funds”) and with bringing the scholars together with their respective benefactors through the Annual Spring Scholars Luncheon.

Although Episcopal has always been committed to aid, it’s more open and celebrated now. To be given a scholarship or any form of aid is a point of pride that salutes the talent of the recipient.

Ralph Roam ’95 received financial aid to attend EA and celebrates the opportunities and support that EA gave him. He, in turn, has supported EA with donations and spoke at the 2009 Scholars Luncheon about his school

The Class of 1960 Scholarship Fund In Honor of Kennith R. Balsley, Anthony W. Ridgway, and William P. White The Class of 1960 Scholarship Fund in honor of Kennith R. Balsley, Anthony W. Ridgway and William P. White, gifted communicators and educators who helped to form, influence and shape lives, was established in 2010 and provides scholarships to Upper School students with demonstrated communication skills. The income from this endowed fund supports students with financial need who exhibit talent in written and/or oral communication.

The Class of 1961 Scholarship Fund in Honor of Randy Stone ’43 In 2011, on the occasion of their 50th reunion, members of the Class of 1961 established an endowed fund in support of Upper School students who have a need for financial aid and have demonstrated aptitude in the discipline of mathematics. Their intention is twofold: first, that this fund will provide opportunity for young learners to benefit from an Episcopal education and, by so doing, hone this important skill set, and, secondly, that their legacy will pay tribute to the mathematics teacher, mentor and coach who inspired them, Randy Stone ’43.

experiences and how he applied them to life. Roam exemplifies Esse Quam Videri and the Episcopal stripes. He works for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) as a partner in the Capital Projects & Infrastructure (CP&I) practice. He joined the company in 2010 when they acquired a management consulting firm he started in 2007 that specialized in capital infrastructure programs in the utilities market.

Today, he works with PwC’s CP&I US leadership team to further develop their practice that provides services associated with developing, financing, planning, permitting, designing, procuring, constructing, commissioning, and operating complex capital assets, projects, or programs.

For Roam, EA gave him something special that he applied to his

life and career: “EA provides an educational experience that offers great context. The academics provide a fantastic foundation, but knowing how to apply what you’ve learned and when is more important. A sense of understanding concepts related to community, culture, diversity, spirituality, and politics provides a foundation for how to apply what you learn. Whether it’s in a Chapel speech, a half-time locker room talk, or conversations with classmates, the experiences that teach context create skills you use for the rest of your life. I think that learning to take any situation in context, whether it’s life, business, or success, has prepared me to be a better father, husband, and businessman.”

The Michelle Deasey ’17 Memorial Scholarship Fund The Michelle Deasey ’17 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 in memory of Devon Lower School student Michelle Deasey. Michelle’s humility, character, competitive spirit and grace continue to inspire her peers, teachers, and family each and every day. This scholarship fund will provide financial assistance to students in need, with preference given to Lower School students who embody these same qualities.

The Havens Family Endowment Fund The Havens Family Endowment Fund was established in 2008

by Peter H. ’72 and Louise A. Havens to support the scholarship of young men or women attending Episcopal Academy who have need for financial aid. The scholars supported should have at least a “B” average in their studies. The donors are also especially interested in individuals who participate actively and successfully in activities outside of academics—i.e., varsity athletics or theater or the arts and who participate in community endeavors, giving time to support a charitable cause.

Thomas J. Meehan Scholarship Fund Established by family and friends in 2004, to honor the memory of much-loved Episcopal coach Thomas J. Meehan, this fund is used to support Upper School students with demonstrated academic and athletic promise.

Alumni like Ralph Roam took what they learned from EA and applied it to their lives and the global community. Many Episcopal graduates go on to make significant contributions to business, science, and creative spheres as well as to be good global citizens. An additional benefit is that the classmates of students like Roam benefit greatly from the energy, drive, and varied experiences that a more diverse student population provides.

A Need to Expand the Program Director of Development Paige LeGrand would like to see an increased focus on generating more endowment funding designated for financial aid.

The Williams Family Scholarship Fund Established in 2006 by Betsy Williams ’93 and Jenny Williams Weymouth ’96, income generated from the Hess Foundation gift will provide assistance to deserving Middle and Upper School students of promise with priority given to Steppingstone Scholars.

Zug Family Fund The fund was established in 1984 by various members of the Zug family, including Tom and Lenore Zug, Harry and Anne Zug, their children James W. Zug ’58, Thomas V. Zug ’64, Graham F. Zug ’70, Albert E. R. Zug ’78, and Wendy Zug Brown ’85.

Income from this fund will support highly-motivated and qualified students in need of financial aid, with preference given to students who have suffered a family crisis (loss of a parent, loss of a job, divorce, other financial hardships) and need assistance to be able to continue at EA.

off point for talented, purposeful young people to move into the world and to make an impact. There are 50 endowed scholarships and the students who receive these are truly extraordinary young people. Yet the number of students that need financial aid is growing—more than 60% of EA’s applicants applied for some measure of aid in 2011—and each year students that would be an incredible addition to the EA community are unable to enroll due to a lack of funding. “We hope to significantly increase the number of named-endowed scholarships in the years ahead,” says LeGrand.

The benefits to both the students themselves and the greater community are remarkable. Take for instance the 2011 co-president of Student Council, founder and co-president of EA Science Society, a member of the French Club, and a member of the varsity soccer and track teams, Mohammed Touré. Mohammed was born and raised in a refugee camp in Guinea after his parents fled war-torn Liberia.

He reached the United States only two years before he began high school at Episcopal. While attending 8th grade in a public school, teachers recognized his great potential and encouraged him to apply to Episcopal, seeing it as a chance to broaden his future. He is thrilled to attend thanks to a Buckley Scholarship.

“I wouldn’t have come to EA if it wasn’t for scholarships and financial aid. My parents are just new to

America and they were starting all over again,” he explains. Mohammed credits his teachers for urging him on and helping him realize his ambitions, and he also feels that EA has given him important components of education outside of the classroom. “EA pushes you hard and helps you reach those goals very quickly if you’re actually committed to them. The teachers are spectacular and they push me and help me see things differently. And it all adds up.” This past summer, Mohammed was chosen to attend the highly-selected MIT Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) Program, where less than 6% of the applicants are accepted.

Not only did Mohammed attend, but he also excelled, winning the 2011 William H. Ramsey Award winner for “the best all-around performance by a male in the program based on high academic performance, proven leadership, and an exhibited willingness to assist others.”

“Mohammed loves to learn, he takes a genuine interest in everything around him, and he is unfailingly polite and appreciative,” said Head of School Ham Clark, who serves as Mohammed’s advisor. “His life has been changed by the opportunities that he has been provided at Episcopal, but he has changed lots of lives here as well.

Mohammed’s public school counselor when he applied to Episcopal said, ‘everyone here wants to be Mohammed’s friend,’ and that has become the same

Bridging the Gap For many, however, financial aid simply provides the gap funding necessary to make the nearly possible a reality.

For young alumna Meagan Berry ’09, that support transformed her life and enriched the Upper School experience for all of her peers and teammates.

And she did not have the typical EA experience. Berry suffers from a disease called Charcot-Marie-Tooth, a hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy, which comprises a group of disorders that affect peripheral nerves.

She also has Type I diabetes. Yet despite the fact that most doctors agree that within the next 10 years she’ll be confined to a wheelchair, Meagan seized every opportunity EA gave her.

Molly Konopka, Meagan’s crew coach while at EA, notes: “The beauty of Meagan is that for a long time no one knew Meagan’s health story because it wasn’t a big deal for her.”

When Meagan was advised against playing field sports, where the stresses on her body might be too great, she turned to the water. She became a three-time varsity letter winner in swimming, captain of the girls’ water polo team, and a member of the national championship girls’ crew senior quad that became the first from Episcopal to ever compete at Henleyon-Thames in England.

“She was not just a freshman on the varsity swimming team; she was a leader on a varsity team,” says Konopka. “That ratcheted up as she became a junior and senior, a leader on three teams and she was taking some difficult classes. And she never used sports, school-work, or how she

was feeling as an excuse when she was down. That’s the kind of kid who imbues in others what it’s like to be a teammate, what it’s like to be a hard worker, what’s it’s like to be a leader.

Everyone learns from a student like that—from teachers to kids. What a positive influence!”

Her commitment, courage, and dedication were so moving that an anonymous donor endowed a scholarship fund in Meagan’s name on the day of her graduation from Episcopal.

The Meagan K. Berry ’09 Scholarship honors “her positive attitude, her quest for excellence, and her courage, which distinguishes her amongst the very best of the graduates of The Episcopal Academy.” Today it is awarded to a student who models these attributes. A fitting gift considering that without a similar scholarship award, Meagan would not have been able to afford an Episcopal education. “Episcopal gave me so much and inspired me to always push myself. As I get older and my perspective grows, I realize what a phenomenal opportunity it was,” says Berry. “It changed my life.”

Mohammed and Meagan’s stories are extraordinary, but there are many kids with compelling backgrounds and hurdles to overcome at EA. Students who tackle obstacles and excel in the classroom, in athletics, in the arts, and in the general community make

an impact on their fellow students.

They model behavior and offer other classmates a shared experience. The popular John F. Kennedy quote, “The rising tide raises all boats” can be applied to some of these special students who attend EA through aid, making an impact while at the school and afterwards.

A Commitment to Each Other In addition to enrolling the region’s best young people, some of whom like Mohammed and Meagan have faced hurdles and enjoyed successes through the school, Episcopal is very committed to keeping current students enrolled. Nationwide, families have been affected by the recession and this leads some who have not previously asked for aid to inquire about it. Episcopal also seeks to avoid being “a barbell school,” which is a portion of people paying full-tuition and then another portion receiving full aid.

As Chair of the Financial Aid Subcommittee of the Board of Trustees, Rick Northrop ’70 worked alongside school Business Manager and CFO, Brad Cates, and Ham Clark to expand the financial aid mission, and he too references the barbell effect. “We risk losing the middle part of the family income barbell as tuitions go up,” says Northrop. “A healthy salary can easily be depleted by the cost (in after-tax

Financial aid is critical to help fill the gap, not only for those who qualify for full tuition support, but also for those middle income families who need and qualify for aid that helps supplement what they can afford to pay. And, in the future, we need to relieve the burden on tuition as a major source of financial aid—we must raise endowment funds.”

Northrop also notes the importance of addressing any misconceptions that may exist about the goal of financial aid. He makes clear, “Economic support for those families that qualify for financial aid is not about meeting quotas or improving athletic teams. It is about being able to attract and support students who can contribute to EA in the classroom, on the field, and in and outside of the Episcopal community. And it is about retaining those students and families who are a wonderful part of our community, but for whom economic conditions have made paying full tuition a significant challenge.”

Cates agrees that Episcopal is made up of diverse students who shine in multiple areas. He runs the numbers and observes, “Helping people has been part of our culture since day one. The percentage of aid is the same in the old ledgers as it is now. It proves that there really is a tradition of financial aid at Episcopal.” For the 2011-12 school year, the school has given financial aid to 240 students and the amount of aid is nearly $5 million.

“When Episcopal started in 1785, Bishop William White ensured that it was part of the school’s mission to offer support for boys in need, and I am delighted that we continue to provide financial help to deserving boys, and, since 1974, to girls,” says Clark. “Our aid recipients are some of our most talented students and contributors to the school community, and they help us to better reflect the economic, religious, and racial diversity of this great region.” / / / / / / / / / /

Just as his 11th grade school year was getting

EA Junior Travels to Mongolia to Help Those in Need Student Jay Achuff travels to the Gobi Desert to help physicians work with local children.

started in September of this year, Jameson Achuff joined a team of 22 Americans and headed to the far end of the world in Mongolia.

With his mother, Barbara-Jo Achuff, MD, a doctor at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the team carried medical supplies and echocardiogram machines by railway to the southwest portion of the Gobi Desert near the Chinese border. The purpose was to examine children for life-threatening congenital heart defects.

The “Searching for Broken Hearts” mission is run by an organization called “For Hearts and Souls” and is made up of a mix of medical professionals and support people from all over the United States.

After an exhausting week living in Mongolian “ger” tents with open fires and eating unfamiliar foods, the team screened 1,284 kids and found 50 children with cardiac defects. These babies would have died if they had not received proper care. Jay was instrumental in organizing and entertaining the children while they waited to be seen by the doctors, which in some cases, took as long as four to six hours.

During the subsequent week, the team traveled back over rough desert terrain to the capitol city of Ulan Bataar to perform emergency work on those found to have heart issues—the “Mending the Broken Hearts” mission began. The American surgeons worked with a Mongolian medical staff to perform 10 open-heart surgeries and 19 heart catheterizations. Like a well-oiled machine, the team prepared families and children for surgery, carefully repaired holes in the heart in the operating room, and then prayed over recoveries in the makeshift ICU. It took the whole team of dedicated, loving, and amazing people working together for each little patient. Jay worked tirelessly in all areas: taking syringes of blood to different places for lab work and supplying water and coffee to keep the medical team on their toes. All the patients did very well and families were reunited with sons and daughters now made whole. It was an incredible experience to witness miracles of hope and changed lives—including Jay’s.

He expressed in his journal: “I realized with this mission how incredibly blessed we are. I did nothing to deserve being born in the

Returning home to my own family filled me with a new sense of gratitude and a realization of God’s grace in my life.”

Jay and his mother are grateful to the support they received for this trip. The team members donated precious vacation time and out-of-pocket expenses for this trip. The Achuff’s non-profit organization “Lifesong International, Inc.” funded many of the team members’ trips this year. Beside the annual trips to Mongolia, Dr. Achuff has traveled with medical teams to West Africa, Haiti, and Iraq. / / / / / / / / / /

Thursday, November 10th. On Friday, all Middle and Upper School students attended a joint Chapel, followed immediately by an all-school pep rally.

On Friday, the EA girls swept Agnes Irwin, claiming the banner once again. The scores were 7-0 in girls’ tennis, 4-2 in field hockey, 2-0 in girls’

soccer, and 22-35 (low score wins) in girls’ cross country.

On Saturday, the boys put up a valiant effort, but dropped contests in football (16-7), water polo (15-9), golf (a new event this year; 242-267) and soccer (2-1). EA did win convincingly in boys’ cross-country 17-47.

celebratory crowd of 240 family, friends, classmates, teammates, and well-wishers who gathered Saturday evening November 12, 2011 for the Alumni Society Awards Dinner to honor and acclaim the high achievements of eight extraordinary individuals and five amazing teams. It was the first time athletic teams were being considered for induction into the EA Athletic Hall of Fame.

Preparations for this event began much earlier in the year. The Hall of Fame Committee, chaired by Jim Farrell ’82, had the difficult task of choosing which, from the many outstanding teams and individuals, would be nominated for induction.

After much deliberation, four individuals and five teams were selected. The individuals inducted were: Bob Callahan ’73 (tennis and

squash); Kurt Lunkenheimer ’95 (football and lacrosse); Adam Murray ’02 (the youngest ever inducted); (soccer, ice hockey, and baseball); and John Wynne, Jr., Hon. (EA’s first and most-storied lacrosse coach). practice of securities issues, corporate governance, and a stint with the SEC; Meg Hollinger, Hon., Distinguished Service for her extraordinary service to EA; Dr. Nick Morris, Jr. ’61, Community Service for his exceptional local and international volunteer work in providing medical care to the less fortunate; and Dr. Matthew Clayton, II ’98, Young Alumnus for his stellar accomplishments as a saxophonist.

The Committee dotted the “i’s” and crossed the “t’s” during the summer and fall in preparation for this event, which honors exceptionalism within the EA community.

Episcopal Mourns the Passing of Charles Latham, jr., Hon. Beloved Episcopal faculty member and honorary

Alumnus, Charles Latham, jr., died this fall at age 94. He was born on May 6, 1917, in Indianapolis, the only child of Charles Latham and Josephine Parker (Sharpe) Latham. A 1939 graduate of Princeton, he received a Master’s degree in history from Harvard in 1940 and served in the Army Signal Corps during the Second World War. After the war, he resumed his career as a history teacher, spending 10 years at Dublin School in Dublin, NH. He came to The Episcopal Academy in 1958. During his 24 years at EA, he served at different times as History Department chair, Head of Upper School, Director of Studies, and Director of Libraries. In addition to history, he taught Latin, French, political theory, and history of architecture, and provided counsel, support, and guidance to students and faculty alike.

After his retirement from teaching in 1982, he moved back to Indianapolis and worked as an archivist at the Indiana Historical Society. In 1997 he became a resident of Kendal at Hanover in Hanover, NH. In the 1950s, he acquired the Latham family house in Thetford, where he spent summers for the rest of his life. At the same time, he began a long association with the Thetford Historical Society, serving as its president and principal archivist for many years. His many publications include A Short History of Thetford, William Fortune: A Hoosier Biography, and histories of Dublin School and The Episcopal Academy.

He combined his love of art, architecture, and antiques with his love of travel. Throughout his life he made numerous trips to Europe where he studied cathedrals and bought prints and paintings. Latham had no immediate survivors but he left behind a wide circle of friends, family, and former students in the Upper Valley and across the country. He will be missed.

September 8 marked the Dedication

of the Stanley Family Tennis Pavilion and the completion of Episcopal’s tennis facility, which also includes 14 courts and a coaches’ platform.

The pavilion’s enclosed lower level houses a team room, a coaches’ office, and boys’ and girls’ locker rooms, while the covered rooftop deck provides unobstructed views of matches on multiple courts.

Coaches and donors gathered to celebrate the occasion and honor the spirit and generosity of lead donor George E. Stanley ’39, who passed away on July 25, 2011.

Faculty News & Notes Dr. Catherine Hall Named Academic Dean Position becomes official; Dr. Hall has served as the acting Academic Dean since June Dr. Cathy Hall, Episcopal’s Acting Academic Dean, has been named the permanent replacement

by Head of School, Ham Clark. Over the past 15 years, Cathy has worked extensively in Lower, Middle, and Upper School settings in both public and independent schools.

Cathy earned her BA from Princeton University and a MEd and PhD from the University of Virginia. Her doctoral work focused on teacher evaluation systems and professional growth and best models for differentiated student learning. During this time, she spent a year working in the National Center for Gifted and Talented Education, a federally-funded research center at the University of Virginia. Prior to taking the Acting Academic Dean job in June, Cathy served as Chair of the Technology Department and the Director of Technology at Episcopal.

Cathy’s career began in Lower School, where she served in a variety of roles both in the classroom and at the administrative level. Since that time, she has taught at all levels in math, technology, and English literature, and has served in numerous additional roles, including student advisor and coach. Since taking over as Acting Dean in June, Cathy has overseen Episcopal’s reaccreditation process with the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS) and authored EA’s self-study. In conjunction with the Dean of Faculty, Cathy has also been responsible for implementing

Episcopal’s new faculty evaluation system Folio, and for coordinating and implementing the school’s curricular reviews in math, science, and history.

“Cathy did a fantastic job in coordinating our accreditation and authoring our selfstudy for PAIS this fall and in overseeing our curricular review process,” said Ham Clark. “Beyond that, she has experience in every area of independent schools, she understands our community and our mission as an educational institution, and is highly respected by our faculty. She is a woman of superior intellect and will guide our academic program with expertise and vision.”

Middle School History and English Teacher Publishes Think, Care, Act: Teaching for a Peaceful Future Sue’s sabbatical work on moral, peace, and global education in 2005-2006 comes full circle in a book published last fall by Information Age Publishing.

When EA awarded Sue Cannon, Hon. a sabbatical for 2005-06 to focus on moral, peace, and global education, she started conducting research and writing as she taught students and teachers in China and Japan and made presentations in Canada, Denmark, and the United States. In the years since, during summers and the school year, Sue continued her research and experimented with ways to make the classroom a place where young people can challenge themselves and pursue excellence, yet feel calm, cared for, and caring. In early 2010, Cannon’s book was selected by eminent peace-education scholar, Ian Harris, for Information Age Publishing’s Peace Education Series.

Finally, after the long process of writing, editing, and re-editing, the book has been released!

The book presents rationales and practices for teaching students to think,

care, and act. Sue hopes teachers will recognize the many effective practices that are employed at The Episcopal Academy and that they gain inspiration to try new ideas. “I try to make the world a better place with my teaching,” To that end, I have identified three teaching imperatives: empowering students to think critically and creatively about historical and future issues, helping them care about their classmates and families as well as the global community, and empowering them to act—ethically and effectively, locally and globally—for the greater good,” says Cannon. “I aim to create an atmosphere in which students feel safe to express opinions and fully participate. My fellow teachers, students, and families inspire me to be the best teacher I can be—every day.”

Think, Care, Act has been praised for its reader-friendly combination of theory and practice. As noted author, developmental psychologist, and professor of education, observes: “The writing is excellent: passionate and personal, blending serious content with an engaging, reader-friendly style. This is an important book—for character education and all of education.”

History Teacher and Former Director of Admission, Lynne Hay, Hon., Receives Appreciation Award from A Better Chance (ABC) Foundation This past November, Lynne Hay, Hon., was presented with an appreciation award from A Better Chance (ABC) for more than a decade of work with the organization. ABC is a non-profit organization formed in 1963 to provide educational opportunities for young people of color in the United States.

Lynne served as Episcopal’s Admission Director for 23 years, leaving the post last spring to focus her time and energy completely on her work as a full-time history teacher. “The two things I’m most proud of during my time as the Admission Director is the wonderful work we did in bringing girls to Episcopal after the school went coed and in bringing more students of color into our community,” says Hay. “I was completely surprised and I got very emotional. To be recognized by ABC for something that was very close to my heart meant a great deal to me.”

The glass award, which is about 10” high on a wooden base states: “The MidAtlantic Region of Parents as Partners along with A Better Chance organization recognizes Lynne Hay for her outstanding service, dedication, and unwavering support of our scholars as they move towards their full potential.”

Rachel Tilney is Episcopal’s new Director of Enrollment Management, which oversees all Admission work at EA. Rachel replaces Lynne Hay, Hon., who stepped down to focus her time and energy on teaching full-time. Rachel started her career in Admissions at the Westtown School.

She also served as the Admissions Director and Assistant Head for External Affairs at Kimball Union Academy. Most recently, she was the interim Director of Admissions at the Pomfret School. Rachel earned her BA from Colby College and her MA from Northwestern University in Sociology… Aggie Malter, EdD, Director of External Programs, completed her Doctor of Education in School System Leadership and Administration at Widener University in May 2011. Her research and dissertation focused on, “The Status of Professional Development in Independent Schools Related to Teaching 21st Century Skills”… Beloved former Lower School teacher, Sally Bishop, Hon., recently became a United States citizen… Upper School Math teacher, Tom Goebeler,

had a paper published in the November issue of The College Mathematics Journal.

This past fall

The Episcopal Academy Art Department, together with Episcopal alumnus Peter Hay Halpert ’76, presented a juried student cell phone exhibit entitled “Never Meant to Last” from November 2 through December 15, 2011 in the Crawford Campus Center gallery. “Never Meant to Last” was an exhibit of cell phone and mobile device photographs taken by Middle and Upper School students. As Halpert notes: “Cell phone photography is changing the way we look at the world. Purists call cell phone cameras gimmicks and criticize the quality of the pictures, but they’re missing the point. Photography is a language everyone speaks, and the cell phone camera is making us fluent.”

Ninety students submitted more than 300 photos, with at least one submission from each grade, 6th through 12th. Halpert, an art dealer, professor, author, and contributing editor of the Art Newspaper, Photograph Magazine, and American Photo, assembled a group of top curators to assist him in the selection of the photographs to be exhibited, including Peter Barberie of the Philadelphia Art Museum, Martin McNamara of Gallery 339, Stephen Perloff of the Photo Review, and Sarah Solfa of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center.

It was a fantastic show, and a huge hit with the students. Halpert was then gracious enough to spend time with EA students, answering questions and providing insight into his career and time at Episcopal.

Colonel Marano went on to St. Joseph’s University after graduating from Episcopal and he graduated with a BS in Finance in January, 1985 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant.

Colonel Marano’s assignments in the Operating Forces include Platoon Commander, Co K, 3d Battalion, 9th Marines; Co A, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion; Company Commander 1st Reconnaissance Battalion; and Company Commander, Co K 3d Battalion Fourth Marines.

He served as the G3 Assistant Plans Officer, 1st Marine Division; the Regimental Operations Officer for 23d Marines; and the G3 Current Operations Officer for I Marine Expeditionary Force. He has commanded the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines.

His other assignments include Executive Officer, Recruiting Station San Francisco and G3 Southern Region Operations Officer, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe. He also served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G3, Training and Education Command, Quantico, Virginia.

His Operational and Combat Tours include Operation AUBURN ENDEAVOR 1998, Republic of Georgia; Operation ALLIED FORCE, 1999, Albania and Kosovo; Operation IRAQI FREEDOM I, 2003, Kuwait-Baghdad; Operation IRAQI FREEDOM II, 2004, Fallujah; and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 05-07, 2006, Al Qaim. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger School and the Officer Honor Graduate for Class 10-89. He has also graduated with honors from the Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School in 1994 and the NATO Defense College, Rome, in 2007.

Girls’ Tennis Grabs 9th Inter-Ac Title in Last 11 Years The girls’ tennis

team completed the 2011 season with an impressive 13-2 record, securing once again the Inter-Ac regular season and tournament titles. Everyone contributed valuable victories throughout the season and each win was a “team win.” Highlights of the year included defeating PIAA powerhouse Conestoga 7-0, capturing four of the seven 1st place medals in the Inter-Ac tournament, and going undefeated in league play.

Crew Members Model True Sportsmanship Rowers

James Konopka ’14 and Nick Mead ’13 were recently honored by the Schuylkill River Regatta Association and the United States Coast Guard for abandoning a race they were in to turn around and assist two St. Joseph’s Prep rowers whose shell had capsized. “They had flipped,” Konopka told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Nick said we should probably go back (to help them) and I agreed, so we turned around.”

“They were yelling ‘help’ and one of the kids didn’t appear as if he could swim too well,” Mead said, noting that snow had recently fallen. “The water was cold and I’m sure their limbs were going numb.” Christopher Blackwell, the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta race director, presented the two rowers with the Thomas Eakins Medal of the Schuylkill Regatta for showing “great presence, maturity, and selflessness and the true spirit of the sport of rowing.” Likewise, the boys received a Civilian Service Award from the Chief Petty Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard for “displaying tremendous character and leadership when (they) stopped to rescue two students who were in distress.”

mendous 2011 season with a 4-2 win over Agnes Irwin on November 11th that clinched the outright Inter-Ac Championship with an undefeated league mark of 11-0-1 and brought home the AIS Banner for the third time in four years.

The team also had a very challenging non-league schedule, beating Central League champion Conestoga, Friends Schools League champion Shipley, perennial Catholic League champion Archbishop Carroll, as well as out-of-state powers Lawrenceville and Tower Hill.

As usual, however, the toughest tests of the year occurred against league rival Notre Dame. After a 1-1 overtime tie in mid-September at EA, the two teams faced each other again at Notre Dame on October 18th in a game, which had a significant impact on the league championship. The game was a classic battle, again going to overtime tied at 2-2. Midway through OT, senior Carly Ciccotti netted the winner to give EA a thrilling 3-2 win. For the season, EA compiled a 24-1-1 mark

Experiential Learning: Dr. Kelly Bethoney’s Introduction to Laboratory Science Course Grows What did you

do this past summer? While most high school students use the summer months to rest and relax, a record number of students chose to work in EA’s teaching research lab for six weeks this past June/July in the second year of the constantly-evolving course: Introduction to Laboratory Science. This experiential education course is designed around student-driven inquiry. It aims to demonstrate that what is learned in the classroom and textbook has practical application in science research and beyond the walls of schools, colleges, and university learning.

Unlike last year, which was the inaugural year for the course (see “Bringing a New Kind of Experiential Learning to EA,” Connections, Winter 2010, pp. 20 and 21), the curriculum for this year’s summer course was adapted to cover new ground, while keeping the same goals in mind: providing students with the necessary tools to learn to conduct research in a laboratory setting. The enrollment more than doubled this summer, putting the lab at maximum capacity. The strength of this course is the low student-to-teacher ratio, which enables the student to use high-tech equipment and perform more difficult experimentation. With the guidance of lab coordinator and Upper School Science Department faculty member, Kelley Bethoney, Ph.D., students Jill Barton ’12, Shreya Reddy ’13, Audrey Regillo ’13, Nisha Meyer ’13 and Christian Humann ’12 worked on a protein with specific project goals that were dissimilar to those used in the prior year. In the 2011 summer session, students cloned the protein,

bacteriophage T4 lysozyme, into a DNA plasmid with the overall goal of expressing the viral protein in E. coli.

The students successfully genetically engineered the gene, and continued on to complete a small-scale culture protein expression test from a cloned plasmid.

This was one of the first experiments of its kind at The Episcopal Academy and is routine in a standard research laboratory. To complete these tasks, the students designed their own DNA primers, used the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction digestion, and transformation into the appropriate Bl21 expression cell lines.

In addition to lab work at The Episcopal Academy, the students travelled to the University of Pennsylvania to visit the laboratory of David Christianson, Ph.D. At the lab, Patrick Lombardi, Ph.D. gave the lab students a tour of Penn’s x-ray crystallography facility and demonstrated some basic protein-

modeling techniques using the latest crystallography software to visualize protein structure. To quote Audrey Regillo, as she wore the 3D viewing glasses, “It just looked so real!”

This year, we also had the privilege of welcoming guest speaker and father to Audrey Regillo, Dr. Carl Regillo, M.D. to our teaching research laboratory. Students were able to learn about cutting-edge stem cell research and its place in the treatment of several ocular diseases. We also learned about the latest technology in the treatment of blindness!

Marshal’s father betrays King Stephan and Stephan decides not to execute the boy. Marshal goes on to become the greatest knight of the realm and Henry II appoints him to train his son. William gets caught up in all the quarrels between Henry II and his sons, Richard the Lionheart and John. It is a great read!”

The mission of the International Academy for Educational Entrepreneurship is to identify, encourage, and support educators who have already invested or are interested in investing time, energy, and capital to create, develop, and market programs, products, services, and/or technologies designed to enhance and improve education. For the past 40 years, Dr. Borkowski has served as an author, speaker, expert witness, and consultant in sport and recreation safety. His business has evaluated playground and athletic facilities in regard to safety for schools, camps, insurance companies, and law firms. He has been a prolific writer by publishing 410 articles, 310 dealing with safety and the safety responsibilities of coaches, recreational leaders, and teachers. He wrote a monthly safety column for Coaches Legal Report, the National Athletic Director and the Coach’s Letter. He has written numerous books and manuals regarding sports safety including, School Sport Safety and Fitness; The School Sports Safety Handbook; and Putting Prevention Into Practice. Dr. Borkowski’s newest book, The Defensive Game Plan for Safety in Sports was published by Momentum Media in December 2011.

Malcolm Coates writes “I hosted a family Thanksgiving dinner for 20 souls, including my great-granddaughter, born back in the spring of 2011. Our Tokyo group was unable to join us, although they were here this summer where we spent July in our Maine summer house. Our son is fluent in Japanese, and his Japanese wife is fluent in English. Both little boys will be bilingual. I have a total of nine grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Other than that, I try to keep busy while still in reasonable health. Ralph DeCoursey writes that life is good in semi-retirement. “My working days were spent in the employee benefits field, more recently on small employer pension plans. Our Congress has been so busy in that area that an employer with a plan needs a consultant to keep out of trouble with all the regulators. Marge and I have four children and six grandchildren in Lincoln, NH; San Mateo, CA; Harrisburg, PA; and Baltimore, MD. Younger son Peter is an internet political reporter who occasionally appears on the PCN television network. I play tennis two or three times a week, thanks to a new knee installed a couple of years ago. Nine

or 10 members of our Class of ’44 get together for lunch every other month about a mile from the Academy, which makes it easy to keep up with the latest classmate news.”

Ralph Brenner reports that “I have retired from the law firm, Montgomery, McCracken, Walker and Rhoads, a few years after my Chairmanship and have been enjoying a blessed life of travel and leisure between Marco Island, FL and Avalon, NJ, where we are residents and Charlestown, SC, where we are currently spending our winters near two sons who have homes there.

Since I am not fishing anymore our family boat has been moved to SC. The fishing seems to be better and the season longer than the Jersey Shore.

My wife of 58 years, Joan Ne Van Dusen, and I have four children and 10 grandchildren. Our youngest son,

Andrew, was in the first graduating class from the Devon Campus and then moved on to Merion, graduating in 1986. Our legacy grandchild, Andrew, is currently in the Fifth grade at the wonderful new campus in Newtown Square. His older sister, Lauren, age 13, is enrolled for the fall of 2012 entry into the Episcopal tradition.

I have always treasured my years at Episcopal Academy and believe it provided a strong foundation for my career and life challenges.”

Harry Blynn is back in Vero Beach until July. He is involved in politics and his wife Sydney owns a lady’s boutique. He is so happy that he has three grandchildren thriving at EA: James ’14 and Sydney Gibson ’15 and Brooke Baxter ’17.

John Hewson is a retired orthopedic surgeon but remains active by special appointment for disability evaluations and orthopedic surgery consultation.

He writes “after graduating from Trinity College as a history major, spent three years in the Army Security Agency in Europe, married Cathryn Wendler, an Irwin’s girl, ended up in Cleveland in the steel business and had two great boys. One son still lives in Cleveland and has six fantastic children really gifted in the arts and music. Our other son lives in England in a lovely Saxon Village south of London. He has a terrific German wife and two young girls, two and five.

He is Managing Director of a company called Health Partners International traveling all over the world in his work.”

Walter Buckley reports the following.

“I am still working full-time and enjoying every minute. I have also taken on more work outside the office and find it very fulfilling and challenging. I currently serve as a trustee on: the Civil War Trust; the National Episcopal Church endowment fund: the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation; and chair the investment committee of the St. Luke’s Hospital here in Bethlehem.

Finally, I have the great fun and pleasure of chasing seven grandchildren who range in age from 17 months to 20 years old. Perhaps best of all, my dear bride, Marjorie, who still puts up with me, is busier than I am with her work at the beloved North Carolina Outward Bound School and at UNC-Chapel Hill.”

Joe Kopf is retired but still works a few hours a week doing two things. He referees soccer games for the Hilton Head Recreation Center in the evening several nights a week. “It brings back memories of our soccer days at Episcopal.” Joe’s grandson, 12 and granddaughter, 7 play on soccer teams in CT, and they belong to a soccer club called Oakwood Soccer Club. He is still active in tennis and on two teams.

It’s called super seniors, and you have to be at least 60 to be on the team.

Joe also works a couple of nights a week at a retirement home as a night manager and reports that it is very rewarding to take care of people who can’t take care of themselves.

Steve Powell has been retired for 12 years and is living in Sparta, NC, the cow pie, cabbage, and Christmas Tree center of the universe. it was great fun arranging for their stay and amusement. Most actors came from NYC, Boston, and one from Philadelphia—Bernard Bygott. I masochistically enjoyed the challenge of nurturing audience and donor interest in the Upper Valley (Lebanon, Hanover, Norwich, etc.) in the new theatre. Now it’s back to my old life, but with renewed spirit. I continue as treasurer of the World Affairs Council of NH. I will now make more progress on my maple sugar tree farm, gardening, property maintenance, and Missouri River history, writing at night. I’ve written over 1,000 pages, which keeps me out of trouble and provides another thing to do in the NH woods. Then there’s the bookbinding and restoring of old books. Hopefully Anthony Ridgway looks down kindly upon my theatre work and book restoring.

Hilton Smith reports “In late October, I was able to spend the night with David and Sue Riggs at their home on the Stanford Campus. It was a great follow-up to our 50th at EA in May 2009. David has retired but is still

keeping his hand in at Stanford and with a number of community activities.

We shared some thoughts about Ridgway, Balsley, and Latham, all three of which had an impact on our lives after EA. We both grew up in Cincinnati before coming to Philadelphia and EA—me in the 4th grade and David in 8th grade and our parents knew each other pre-Philadelphia. That put an additional spin on our memories. We also shared our thoughts of Stanford where I worked in the administration and left, just before David arrived on the faculty.

I am still reporting daily to guide my Waterways Cruises back to profitability and enjoying it. I don’t have to worry about keeping my mind in shape. No retirement in the future, but I am in control of the pace so all is well. Kids —Dan, Stuart, and Will—are no longer kids with Dan having just turned 40. I have a few more days of youth left at 70. Only Stidham has more time left!

1960 Class Agent: Maurice Heckscher In June, Peter Timms “informed the Board of Directors at the Fitchburg Art Museum that I would retire, not this December, but next (like many classmates, I’m coming upon a significant birthday) and they should begin making plans.” We’ve accomplished a lot in 39 years (if you don’t know the Fitchburg Art Museum, and are in New England, you should visit—Google it) but I wanted to leave while I felt I could still do something else. And this is the News: About a year ago, turning to EA classmate, Al Chagan, for advice, I started a non-profit: Careers That Count. Its mission: to infuse the spirit, character,

and talents of transitioning military personnel into the non-profit sector: Education, Land and Environment, Health and Human Services, Disaster Relief and Assistance, Youth, Sport and Recreation, and Arts, Culture and the Humanities. Having served in the military and on a variety of non-profit boards, I’m convinced that non-profits, and the country, will benefit from the energies of former military personnel.

The 501c3 application was approved by the IRS in September. I will be the paid Director; Al, who knows more than I about non-profits having started Impact Thrift Stores, is the volunteer President of the five-member board.

We are raising money to develop a searchable database and a Web site and, if all goes well, in 2012 will begin making on-site presentations to transitioning military personnel about the scope and opportunities nonprofits offer.

Maurice Heckscher has once again, taken over as Class Agent and is looking forward to it! “Now have SIX grandchildren and two of my kids aren’t even married yet! Not playing as much squash but looking forward to playing golf at AUGUSTA next year!”

George David and four others were pulled from the Celtic Sea in mid-August after the 100 foot, recordbreaking yacht Rambler 100 lost its keel and capsized during the Fastnet Race. Everyone was okay and the yacht was leading the monohull fleet when the keel broke off. Rambler 100 set the record for fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean during a yacht race, covering 2,975 nautical miles in six days, 22 hours, 8 minutes, 2 seconds.

Jeff Dease has been retired since 1998, and his wife retired in August of last year. Jeff retired as Director of Internal Audit for the International Division of Enron Corp.

George Lilley writes the following “Travels—Last January traveled with six college students from Davis and Elkins College to visit the Presbyterian Church of East Africa’s Presbytery in Nyeri, Kenya. Stayed with host families, toured the area and met so many devoted Christians. This fall my wife and I toured Peru including Lima, Iquitos, a week in the Amazon Rain Forest, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is as spectacular as the pictures.

The remains of Aztec civilization are beautiful and the creativity of the Aztec mind, mindboggling. A trip for anybody’s Bucket List. This past year I have served the Presbytery of West Virginia as its Moderator.

Next year, I chair the Council. The Presbytery is in a period of transition as the Executive Presbyter retired.

ClassNotes We have just completed a Mission Study that will lead us into new directions for 2012. Thus, year 2012 will be a busy one for me. Finally, I am moderating at a pivotal time when the Presbyterian Church (USA) has modified its ordination standards that previously prohibited the ordination of men or women who were not married or celibate, if single. Thus anyone who was GLBT, regardless of qualifications or talents, could not be a Teaching Elder (minister of the word and sacrament) or Ruling Elder (local church leadership). The adopted change removes the prohibition and requires that, when deciding on church leadership, the education, skills, gifts, and talents of the person are factors to be considered.”

SU’s Bruce Smith named a 2011 National Book Award finalist. An English professor in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences, Bruce has been named a finalist for the 2011 National Book Award (NBA) in Poetry. Bruce, who also teaches in The College’s creative writing program, was named for the prestigious award for his book Devotions (The University of Chicago Press, 2011). He has been touring in support of Devotions since its publication in February 2011. Smith is the author of five other volumes of

poetry, including The Other Lover (The University of Chicago Press, 2000), which was a finalist for both the NBA and Pulitzer Prize. “I am extremely pleased that Bruce Smith’s work was nominated for the National Book Award in Poetry,” says Arts and Sciences Dean George M. Langford. “As a poet, teacher, and scholar, Bruce is an undisputed star of The College. His work is a major source of inspiration to our students, and has helped put us on the literary map.”

Our son, Tyson, lives in Orlando, teaches counseling psychology at UCF, and is an ER nurse at Florida Hospital. He is also an entertainer at Universal Studio, and you may have met him when he was a guide on the “Jaws” boat. Miss seeing Steve Dittmann at spring training.”

Ed Morris has been elected a Fellow of the Society for the History of Psychology (Division 26 of the American Psychological Association) and an Executive Committee member of Cheiron, the International Society for the History of the Behavioral and Social Sciences. He’s history, now.

John Platt writes that his daughter, Sarah, gave birth to a baby girl in September, making Sheila and he “two-time members of the Goofy Grandparents Club.”

Peter Steere was recently appointed Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Tohono O’odham Indian Nation that he works for in AZ. He is being kept busy with doing much environmental work along the Mexican Border, and he has five grandkids, ages 2 to 10. His children are spread out from Groton to New York to LA, and two of them are teachers.

A dozen sketches by New Hampshire artist John S. Taylor are being used to illustrate a small desk calendar that is now being published. All proceeds from the sale of these calendars are being donated to two non-profit organizations doing remarkable work in local communities struggling to recover from the devastating earthquake and

tsunami that struck the Tohoku region of Japan in March. These sketches have been excerpted from several travel sketchbook / journals that John created while traveling throughout Japan. Since retiring from Standard & Poor’s in 2006, Paul Blocklyn has taught at Kean University in Union, NJ, where he is an Adjunct Professor of English.

He teaches a course in Business and Professional Writing and has published articles on a wide range of business topics. He is currently working on a series of articles designed to help graduating college seniors with the job hunting process.

The company has been up and running for six years and in that time has forged deep collaborations with The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the CDC, the WHO, UNICEF, to name a few, in the global push to replace the standard needle and syringe with needle-free injectors.

David Fenimore played the Ghost of Old Hamlet in the Nevada Repertory Theater’s world premiere of Hamlet in the original pronunciation (“OP”).

The lead role was played by London actor Ben Crystal, son of British linguist David Crystal (Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language) who has reconstructed the Early Modern English most probably spoken by Shakespeare and his company 400 years ago. The show sold out 12 of its 18 performances. Fenimore is happy to have his life back.

Led by Fenimore’s long-suffering wife, Field Marshall Amy Horne (George School, Class of 1971), we spent the night acclimating in the scenic old mining community of Georgetown (el. 8500), left Guanella Pass trailhead shortly after dawn, summited, celebrated, and were back at the parking lot in time to rejoin wives and domestic partners for the drive back to Denver and a gargantuan brewpub dinner. Other planned and spontaneous reunion activities that week included riding Amtrak across the Rockies; watching the Phillies barely beat the Rockies at Coors Field; exploring beautiful downtown Denver on foot and by bicycle; visiting with McKoy’s son Tommy, his wife Lindsey, and their brand-new daughter Vivienne; and challenging LoDo dining establishments to efficiently serve our boisterous and demanding party of 14 at the drop of a hat. Next summer’s location is yet to be announced, but we

urge our other classmates to clear their calendars and start breaking in those hiking boots now.”

Katie, 10, and Christopher, 7, will study in an international school, and Julie hopes to return to practicing veterinary medicine as she did in Beijing.”

Amanda Lamb’s latest true crime book, Love Lies, (Penguin Putnam) came out in December 2011. It is her fifth book. She is also working on another book, number six; in a totally different genre, I Love You to God and Back (Thomas Nelson). This is a collection of her daughter’s prayers that she spent a year recording and writing about. This journey of faith and parenting will be published in April 2012. She is also working on a companion children’s book of the same title due out later in 2012.

Jenn Tierney reports “Things are great for me. I had a fantastic summer, filled with adventures. I went with the senior class to Costa Rica for two weeks and led a group of 14 students through the country. Our time was spent travelling

all over the country, hiking, surfing the Pacific waves, climbing, repelling down waterfalls, kayaking through a mangrove forest, white-water rafting on the Pacuare River, horseback riding, and so much more. I am still loving teaching 3rd grade at Episcopal, and I have a fantastic class this year, as I always do. We just celebrated Spirit Week, leading up to EA/Haverford/AIS Weekend, and it always reminds me of my days as a student at EA and makes me so grateful to still be so connected to this fine school. I see many familiar faces at EA every day, such as former teachers and now so many of my classmates have children at EA, which makes me feel even more at home here. Life is good!”

Katie Kurz reports “For the past year, I’ve been participating in an executive master’s program in Lugano, Switzerland in communications management. The opportunity to go back to school has been fantastic!

During the summer as part of the program, I did a two-week intensive course at Anderson School of Management at UCLA. While I was on the West Coast, I had the chance to connect with Eric Smith and his family for a day at Redondo Beach.

Tyler Wren ’99 is still cycling professionally for the Jamis/Sutter Home Pro Cycling Team. He recently finished on the podium at a stage of the Tour do Rio in Brazil on the 2016 Olympic course and is heading to the Vuelta, Chile in January 2012.

Eva Kohn has been working for the Phoenix Suns since graduating from Duke in May of 2010. Her work has focused on providing business development strategies and entertainment for businesses and corporations throughout the Valley and

led her “New Business Team” class in revenue generated for the 2010-11 campaign. She was promoted to an Account Executive last January and has learned a great deal about the business side of the sports industry and hope to continue to work in the sports business.

T.J. Carson has accepted a position as an analyst at Barclays Capital beginning in July 2012. He is currently a senior at Trinity College where he tries to keep Gardner Butterworth out of trouble. “This is a full time job!” he reports.

Alejandro Rettig y Martinez was named to the second team AllCentennial Conference for his play during this past soccer season. This is the second year in a row that Alejandro has received this honor.

Liz Hamlin went to Costa Rica last summer with a group from Tulane to tutor high school students, at the Liceo Julio Fonseca, that live in some of the worst slums in San Jose, including Leon XIII (one of the slums). She found it very rewarding to be teaching these students English and was surprised with their eagerness to learn and engage in the tutoring process. She wants to continue working with kids and younger students in the future. Liz is in her last year at Tulane University and is playing tennis on the team there.

Tulane is a top-50 team in the country, but this year should be around 30 in the country. Playing tennis at Tulane

has been challenging and time consuming but very rewarding.
