Elevating Excellence

This summer, our community watched Matt Freese ’17 make U.S. Soccer history as the starting goalkeeper for Team USA at the FIFA World Cup. Matt became the winningest World Cup goalkeeper in Team USA history, recording three victories, two clean sheets, and nine saves across the tournament. To see Matt compete on the world’s biggest stage, representing our country with the poise, resilience, and quiet confidence that anyone who knew him at EA would recognize, was a deeply proud moment for all of us.

But what struck me most was not just the saves he made. It was thinking about the thousands of moments that led to that stage. The early mornings. The tough losses. The coaches who pushed him and the teammates who challenged him. The classroom expectations that taught him discipline and time management long before professional soccer demanded it. The Chapel Talks and interactions with our teachers that helped him understand who he wanted to be, not just what he wanted to do.

That’s the EA story. And you will see it unfold throughout the pages of this magazine. You will see it in the championship seasons and the philosophy behind our athletics program. You will see it in the tribute to Jay Crawford, whose leadership shaped generations of students and whose legacy continues to guide us.

You will see it in the performances on our stages, the discoveries in our science labs, the students serving their communities, and the alumni who returned to campus to share how EA prepared them for the lives they are leading. You will see it in the faculty members we celebrated this year, whether for decades of dedicated service or for the kind of extraordinary teaching and coaching that changes the trajectory of a young person’s life.

What connects all of these stories is something I’ve been hearing consistently in conversations with our alumni, students, parents, and faculty as we prepare for what comes next for EA. The message is clear: what makes this school special is not any single program or achievement. It is the whole. It is the way academic rigor, athletic participation, Chapel, the Stripes, service, and genuine human connection come together in a community that knows its students by name. In a world that

increasingly pulls young people toward screens and away from one another, the holistic education we offer, one that challenges and nurtures Mind, Body, and Spirit, has never been more vital.

As many of you know, we have been hard at work on a new strategic plan, our first since 2010. We’re calling it “Elevating Excellence,” and I look forward to sharing it with you soon. I won’t spoil the details here, but I will tell you this: you’ll recognize the school you love on every page. This is not a plan that turns us in a new direction.

It is one that challenges us to go deeper, to take the things we already do well and do them even better, with greater intentionality and for every single student.

We are fortunate to begin this next chapter from a position of extraordinary strength.

Enrollment is strong. Our faculty, staff, coaches, and students are remarkably talented and deeply committed. Thanks to the generosity of our community, our endowment and philanthropic support continue to grow. These are the foundations that allow us to be ambitious about the future.

“Excellent enough” has never been in our vocabulary. The question that has animated this entire process is a simple one: How do we take a great school and make it even greater? I believe the answer is already here, in our people, our values, and our shared commitment to this remarkable community. I cannot wait to show you where we are headed.

With less than a minute left in the EA/ Haverford football game last November, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Todd Fairlie, Hon. was locked in on his team, calling plays and managing the clock as any head coach would. But on the sidelines, others were watching something else, refreshing phones and tracking a score 12 miles away. When Springside Chestnut Hill pulled off an overtime upset over Malvern, Greville Haslam Head of School Dr. T.J. Locke, Hon. made his way over to Fairlie with the news: We’re Inter-Ac champs!

Fairlie turned to his assistant coach to confirm, a look of disbelief on his face before emotion washed over him. His team had just clinched a share of the league championship for the first time since 2019, and they were about to help bring the coveted Sweater home with a decisive 24-3 victory over Haverford. It was a goosebump kind of moment.

The football victory capped a pictureperfect EA/Haverford/Agnes Irwin Weekend filled with notable moments across every competition. Boys’ golf secured an 11-shot victory at Merion West, their first EA/ Haverford Day win there since 2011. Girls’ tennis finished 7-0 in league play, and girls’ soccer entered their match on a 12-game winning streak and continued to dominate with a commanding 3-1 victory. Field hockey won a tough battle 4-2, and the girls’ cross country team had a great showing. Boys’ cross country had their best race of the season, putting nine runners in the top eleven. Water polo fell by just one goal in the closest match in recent history, and soccer battled hard in a nailbiter that went to overtime. The girls protected the Banner against Agnes Irwin, extending their decadelong dominance, and the boys brought the Sweater home for the first time in six years.

But the rivalry weekend, as thrilling as it was, represents just a fraction of what EA’s student-athletes have achieved in recent seasons. In the past year alone, EA teams captured eight Inter-Ac championships, five PAISAA titles, and a national championship.

Six student-athletes were named league MVPs, six earned Player of the Year honors, and 136 athletes received All-League recognition. This level of sustained success requires a special playbook.

More Than Winning: A Philosophy of Excellence

Ask anyone in EA Athletics about the secret to success, and they’ll tell you it starts long before the first whistle blows. Fairlie emphasizes that the foundation is culture, a shared commitment to excellence that permeates every program.

“We’re not just trying to win games,” he explained. “We’re trying to develop young people who understand what it means to compete with integrity, support their teammates, and represent something bigger than themselves. We want practice to be the best part of a kid’s day, a place where they can compete, grow, and leave their stress behind.”

That philosophy is embedded in EA’s structure, starting with the Middle School’s three-season athletic participation requirement. Every student learns the lessons of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, and they do so with full access to the same world-class facilities used by varsity athletes. Middle Schoolers see their future every time they step onto one of EA’s pristine fields or into the Dixon Athletic Center, building excitement for what’s ahead.

The Multi-Sport Advantage In an era when year-round specialization has become the norm in youth athletics, EA has taken a different path. The school actively encourages and celebrates multi-sport participation, viewing it as both a competitive advantage and an essential part of student development.

“We build our programs around the multi-sport athlete,” Fairlie noted. “Playing different sports and serving different roles on different teams makes you more versatile, more resilient, and frankly, more prepared for what college coaches are looking for.”

A few of last year’s team captains embodied that philosophy, serving as captains for multiple teams. Each carried lessons learned in one arena to another, creating the kind of athletic intelligence that cannot be developed through specialization.

The approach also distinguishes scholastic athletics from the club sports model. Where club programs can sometimes feel transactional, the EA experience mirrors what students will find in college: a relationship-based culture built on shared commitment and genuine community. Annual traditions, inner-league rivalries, team trips and dinners, and senior night celebrations create memories that last a lifetime, forged in experiences that simply don’t exist outside the scholastic setting.

Ask any EA student or alum about their favorite memory, and chances are they’ll The Rivalry mention EA/Haverford/Agnes Irwin Weekend. It’s a tradition that transcends the games themselves: a week of mounting anticipation, Spirit Week celebrations, and Weekend: a campus buzzing with energy culminating in competitions where every point matters and every cheer from the crowd makes a difference.

Where Spirit “There’s nothing quite like it,” reflected one senior captain. “The whole school together. Kids who’ve never been to a game all year are suddenly painting Meets Success comes their faces and cheering in the stands. You can feel that energy on the field.”

This is where the scholastic model truly shines, Fairlie explained. Club sports may offer high-level competition, but most can’t replicate the experience of representing your school in front of your peers, teachers, and community. The roar of the crowd when a teammate scores, the sea of blue and white in the bleachers, the shared joy of victory, and seeing hundreds of your classmates storm the field as the buzzer blares are unforgettable moments that forge bonds that last well beyond graduation.

“School spirit isn’t just a nice thing to have,” Fairlie noted. “It’s part of what drives our success. When athletes know the whole school is behind them, they compete differently. They dig deeper. That culture of support, players cheering for other teams, and students showing up for sports they don’t even play, is something we cultivate intentionally.”

Coaches Who Are Teachers First One of EA’s most distinctive advantages is the integration of athletics into the broader school community. The majority of varsity coaches also serve as faculty or staff, mentoring students in the classroom as well as on the field. Half have led their programs for over a decade, building a culture of consistency, trust, and long-term development.

“When your coach is also your history teacher or your advisor, the relationship goes so much deeper than just Xs and Os,” noted Assistant Athletic Director Katie Duffie. “Trust gets built in the hallways and the classroom. That’s what allows coaches to push athletes and have them receive that feedback the right way.”

Boys’ Cross Country Coach and EA Athletic Hall of Fame member Jim Farrell ’82 exemplifies this commitment. A seven-time league champion coach and Coach of the Year recipient, Farrell has spent decades shaping not just runners but young men of character. Molly Konopka, Hon., who leads the EA Crew program, received both the 2025 Michael F. Mayock Distinguished Teacher Coach Award and the Joseph F. Brennan Memorial Coach’s Award, recognitions that honor excellence in both classroom teaching and athletic coaching.

Other examples of coaching excellence are Zach Richards, Hon., who has earned three Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association Coach of the Year honors, and Whitaker Powell, Hon., who has accumulated more than 25 tennis titles and also boasts a Coach of the Year recognition. According to Duffie, these coaches create environments where connection, toughness, and a team-first mindset become the standard.

Investing in Excellence Championship programs require championship-level resources, and EA’s commitment to student-athletes extends far beyond the playing field. From world-class facilities to cutting-edge wellness programming to coach development, strategic investments touch every aspect of the EA Athletics experience.

The immaculate grass soccer fields, maintained by a grounds crew that takes extraordinary pride in their work, are the envy of visiting teams. Coaches from other schools regularly ask for the crew’s contact information, and professional athletes and teams have sought out EA’s fields for their own training when school is not in session.

“Not many schools have resources like these,” acknowledged Girls’ Soccer Coach Andy Fraggos, Hon., whose team plays on the newly named Class of ’76 Field.

“Our kids know that, and they appreciate it. When you step onto a field that’s been prepared with that level of care, it sends a message about the standards to which we all hold ourselves at EA.” Many of our programs and teams are benefitting from recent gifts made by the Class of 1976, David ’80 and Kathy Reape P ’14 ’16 ’20, and our lacrosse alumni community, whose members gathered on campus this spring to celebrate the program’s 50th anniversary.

EA’s rowing program was thrilled to receive five new shells, thanks to a generous donor. “Having a new boat gives the kids extra spirit and confidence when they go out to race,” shared Konopka. “Adding that spirit makes us faster and a more united team.”

Investment in student-athlete wellness has been equally transformative. The Fant Boyko Fund enhances the studentathlete experience by supporting recovery, sports medicine, mental performance coaching, and leadership development.

Through innovative wellness programming and state-of-theart recovery resources, the Fund helps students perform at their best while caring for their mind, body, and spirit.

In spring 2025, thanks to the generosity of a donor, the school launched a new round of professional development focused on athletics. More than 30 coaches participated, gaining deeper knowledge in roster and program management, communication, recruiting strategies, and team culture. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and expanded offerings are already underway.

But resources alone don’t create champions. It’s the way those investments connect to the broader mission, supporting student-athletes in becoming their best selves, not just their best competitors, that makes the difference.

Mentorship Across Every Division The expectation that upperclassmen will invest in younger students is woven into EA’s athletic culture, and that investment extends far beyond the playing field. Through programs like Bridge Days, varsity athletes mentor Middle School players, introducing them to the standards and traditions that will define their high school careers.

“When I was in Middle School, they made me feel like I was part of something special,” shared one captain.

“Now it’s my turn to do that for the younger kids. That’s how the culture gets passed down.”

In the Lower School, varsity athletes are nothing short of local celebrities. Young students’ faces light up when they get a high five from their idol while walking across the Clark Campus Green. Upper School student-athletes greet Lower School students on the first day of school, visit classrooms during Spirit Week, and help out and cheer them on during Aurora/Vesper Day. Many also get to know the youngest students through working for EA’s Aftercare program and summer camps, building relationships that span the full K-12 experience.

Championships Across the Board

The breadth of EA’s athletic success is remarkable. EA’s cross country and track programs have rewritten the record books in recent years, earning multiple national championship qualifications, regional and state championships, and a national title in the Sprint Medley Relay. Girls’ lacrosse, softball, and tennis have posted undefeated seasons and captured multiple league and state titles. Boys’ lacrosse earned a piece of the Inter-Ac title for the first time in 27 years, and EA’s Crew earned five medals.

Girls’ golf has captured four consecutive Inter-Ac Championships and back-to-back PAISAA titles. Boys’ tennis clinched a league title, and the baseball team racked up 20 wins for the first time in program history.

These achievements continue a tradition that stretches across generations.

Four EA alumni competed in the 2024 Summer Olympics, including Ashley Sessa ’22 (field hockey), Jovana Sekulic ’21 (water polo), Ivan Puskovitch ’19 (open water swimming), and Nick Mead ’13, who won a gold medal in rowing and was chosen to serve as a flag bearer at the Closing Ceremony.

Matt Freese ’17 competed this summer as the starting goalkeeper for Team USA in the FIFA World Cup. Professional athletes like NBA veterans Wayne Ellington ’06 and Gerald Henderson ’06, and professional soccer players Morgan Messner ’18 and AJ Marcucci ’17 all trace their roots to EA.

Looking Ahead As another year of competition kicks off this fall, the question isn’t whether EA will add to its championship collection, but how many titles will come home. But for Fairlie and his staff, the real measure of success lies elsewhere.

“Championships are wonderful, and we’re incredibly proud of what our students have accomplished,” he reflected. “But when I see our graduates come back and talk about what EA Athletics meant to them—the lessons they learned, the relationships they built, and the confidence they developed— that’s when I know we’re doing this right.”

The numbers bear this out: roughly one-third of EA seniors continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level, far above the national average, competing in conferences from the Ivy League to the ACC to the Big Ten. That success stems directly from the driven environment, the emphasis on academics and multisport participation, and the relationships forged between coaches and athletes.

Matt Freese ’17 etched his name into U.S. Soccer history this summer as the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. Men’s National Team at the FIFA World Cup. Whose Am I?

Remembering Jay Crawford ’57

Dr. James L. “Jay” Crawford, Jr. ’57, a student, teacher, coach, and headmaster, devoted 56 years to The Episcopal Academy. He died on January 3, 2026, at the age of 87, with his wife, Rosemary, by his side.

Late in his life, preparing remarks for his 50th class reunion, Jay set aside the question most people spend their years trying to answer.

Not “Who am I?” he wrote, but “Whose am I?” It was a question of faith, of family, and of belonging. For a man whose name became inseparable from Episcopal, the answer was never much in doubt.

He belonged, first, to a mother who would not give up on him. By his own cheerful admission, Jay was a handful, a boy who was not reading in first grade, repeated second grade, and who, in his telling, simply needed more room than the city could give him. His mother, Thelma, went looking for that room and found it at Episcopal. “At my parents’ insistence, I left the Lower School at Friends’ Select to attend Episcopal in order to have more room,” Jay recalled. The commute was long, and the financial commitment was real, but Thelma Crawford was steadfast. It would prove to be, in the words of current Greville Haslam Head of School T.J. Locke, Hon., “one of the most consequential decisions in the history of this school.”

Episcopal gave Jay room, and he filled it. By his graduation in 1957, he had earned nine varsity letters in soccer, basketball, and track, captained the soccer team, won All-Inter-Ac and All-City honors, and set school records in the hurdles.

“In spite of his natural athletic ability, Jay never showed the slightest sign of conceit,” a classmate wrote in his senior yearbook. “He was noted for his friendly manner and desire to learn.” Jim Zug ’58, who played soccer alongside him, put it more plainly: “Jay was a giant for Episcopal. He was a superb athlete.”

He carried that talent across City Line Avenue to St. Joseph’s University on a track scholarship, captaining both soccer and track and earning recognition as the school’s outstanding senior athlete. He played semi-professional soccer after graduation and, years later, famously jumped into the Boston Marathon without registering and finished it. “Jay never did anything halfway,” Locke observed. It was at St. Joseph’s, too, that he met Rosemary Armon. They married after his 1961 graduation, beginning a partnership that would last more than 60 years.

After a year teaching at Monsignor Bonner High School, Jay returned to Episcopal in 1962 to teach science and coach soccer. He and Rosemary moved onto campus and raised four children there. He held multiple leadership positions, including director of admissions, director of college guidance, and assistant headmaster, before being named headmaster in 1973, a role he would hold for 29 years.

What followed reshaped the institution. Under Jay, Episcopal embraced coeducation, expanded its Devon campus, grew its endowment, launched a nationally recognized community service program, and completed its first comprehensive strategic plan. He championed the Arts, oversaw the construction of the Neathery Science Wing, and invested deeply in his faculty. And in his final act as headmaster, he worked with the Board of Trustees to secure the 123-acre property in Newtown Square that Episcopal now calls home.

He led that change without ever treating the school’s past as something to discard.

“He did not erase history; he expanded it,” said Gina Buggy, Hon., whom Jay hired in 1986 and named athletic director in 1993, at the time one of the only women to hold the role at the Inter-Ac table. “He made the circle wider while keeping its center strong.”

The transition to coeducation was, she recalled, no small shift: “It required courage, diplomacy, and vision.” The first class of girls graduated in 1984; fittingly, Jay’s own daughter, Kim, was among them.

Buggy’s account of Jay’s leadership doubles as a portrait of the man. “He built teams, not headlines,” she said. “He believed in equity, and he believed in excellence, and most importantly, he believed in people.

His belief in me changed my life.”

That belief, specific and personal, is what alumni remember most. Jay made a deliberate practice of connecting with every student, finding some shared interest and making each young person feel seen.

Sarah Pearcy Sawyer ’93, newly arrived from Texas and terrified to be summoned to the headmaster’s office, instead found Jay waiting to tell her he had noticed her walking to school and wanted her to use his driveway, where she would be safe. “I can still remember how special I felt that day,” she wrote. “He knew me and cared for me, and somehow he made every Episcopal student feel the same way. He imbued my years at Episcopal with rare and precious magic.”

He had a gift for seeing potential that students could not yet see in themselves.

Rebekah White Kreutz ’89, who described herself as a lackluster student, returned to campus after college to give a Chapel Talk.

Rather than offer a passing compliment, Jay sat with her in a pew and asked how Episcopal might better reach students like her. “Thank you, Mr. Crawford, for giving me

the gift of feeling truly seen and valued,” she wrote.

Bart Renner ’02 carried a single sentence from the headmaster’s office for 24 years: an invitation, near graduation, to come back one day and teach. “He gave me the chance to see in myself something of what he saw in me,” wrote Renner, now a design leader who teaches every day. “What a radiant gift.”

For Art Carey ’68, whose class dedicated its yearbook to Jay, the gift was simply being heard.

“He was a patient, attentive, absorbent listener, which is to say that he not only listened, but heard,” Carey shared during his eulogy. To Carey, the conclusion was plain: “If Episcopal is a family, then Jay Crawford was, for so many of us, a father.”

Carey also captured the paradox that made Jay magnetic. “He was a jock with the soul of an artist, and an artist with the body of a jock,” he said, “Mr. Chips with a touch of Nick Nolte.” And he lived the school’s motto, Esse Quam Videri, to be rather than to seem, without pretense. As Buggy put it, “No pretense, no performance. What you saw was integrity, steadiness, and a genuine concern for his faculty, staff, and students.”

Underneath all of it was a belief in the whole person. Jay held, as the school does, that Mind, Body, and Spirit belong in balance, and he embodied all three. For alumnus John Bell ’71, Jay was simply “a man who lived the Stripes on our sweaters.” Dennis Siegler ’81 put it another way, “Nobody helped develop my mind, body, and spirit more than Mr. Crawford.”

For all that Episcopal claimed of him, Jay’s family remained, in his words, “at the core.”

Rarely, his daughter Kim noted, did you hear “Jay” without “and Rosemary.” They were, Buggy said, “a team in the truest sense of the word.” They raised four children, Jim ’81, Steve ’82, Kim Farrell ’84, and Meg O’Grady. Eleven grandchildren followed, three of whom carried the family’s EA ties into another generation: Jay ’12 and Robyn ’13 Farrell, and Darby O’Grady ’16.

After retiring in 2002, Jay and Rosemary traveled the world, returning often to their beloved home on Lake

Winnipesaukee, near Camp Tecumseh, a place that held Jay’s heart for nearly 50 years and that he served as a board member and chairman. A lifelong fly fisherman since his boyhood on the Jersey Shore, his greatest late joy was teaching his grandchildren to cast from his dock. In the margin of a book, his family later found a line in his handwriting that summed up his creed: “Always take time to learn and to love.” On a card, in the same distinctive script: “Remember, there’s no finish line on learning, on love.”

His contributions did not go unmarked. He received Episcopal’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1998, was inducted individually into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005, and saw his 1956 track team enshrined in 2017. The Crawford Campus Center on the Newtown Square campus stands today as a lasting tribute. At the 2006 groundbreaking, Jay placed his own Striped sweater, the one he wore as a student at Episcopal, into a time capsule to be opened decades later. A kindergartner watched him do it and turned to a bystander. “He must have really loved this place,” the child said.

And that he did. Across 56 years, Episcopal was, for Jay Crawford, less a workplace than a calling, and the question he carried to the end was whose he was. In his reunion reflection, written in the language of the game he loved, he imagined crossing home plate at last. He did not want to hear, “What do you think you are doing here, stranger?” He wanted to hear: “I’ve been waiting for you, Jay. Come on in.”

On January 3, 2026, with Rosemary beside him, Jay Crawford crossed home plate. “I believe he heard those words,” Locke said.

“And I believe he is home.”

This past spring, hundreds of family members, friends, and colleagues gathered in the Class of 1944 Chapel on a sunny day to share memories and to celebrate Jay’s life and legacy. As his daughter reminded them, there is no finish line on learning, on love.

AN ALUMNA’S CALL TO SERVE The annual Edward H. Vick Jr. ’62 Veterans Day Chapel welcomed Meghan Hubley ’13 back to campus as the featured speaker, with Ed Vick ’62 in attendance. Reflecting on her journey from EA to the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Navy, Meghan encouraged students to lead lives of service and gratitude while sharing how her Episcopal experience prepared her for a career of leadership.

SUCCESS IN SCIENCE It was a record-breaking year for EA Science as 85 students completed independent research projects and competed at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) regional competition, earning 60 first-place and 25 second-place awards along with nine individual distinctions including perfect scores, judge’s awards, and special recognition for innovation, research perseverance, and exceptional analysis. Nineteen students advanced to the PJAS State Meeting, where every one of them earned a first- or second-place award, with two receiving perfect scores and special honors.

FROM EA TO GOOGLE Taylor Long ’15 returned to campus this winter as the speaker for the Clare Foundation and Hinton Family STEM Speaker Series. Sharing insights from her career as a senior threat intelligence analyst at Google, she encouraged students to embrace curiosity, take risks, and remember that meaningful careers rarely follow a straight path.

A TIMELESS TRADITION Under the direction of Performing Arts Department Chair Dan Clay, Hon., EA’s beloved Scrooge Chapel returned with another creative retelling of A Christmas Carol. Alumni Jacob Viscusi ’19 and Nyazia Martin ’12 joined many honorary alumni in a cast inspired by Wicked, Star Wars, and Minecraft.

EA NETWORK IN ACTION EA alumni and parents returned to campus this year to mentor juniors and seniors during Student Networking Roundtables. Through small-group conversations, students explored a wide range of career paths while experiencing the lifelong connections and support that define the EA community.

SPOT THE SPOOF Vanguard Group’s Cybersmart team visited EA to teach 5th graders how to recognize online scams. The team, part of Vanguard’s Enterprise Security and Fraud department, travels to area schools to help students identify phishing attempts and other digital threats. Among the visiting team members was Ryan French ’16, who serves as Vanguard’s Manager of AI Security.

BEHIND THE LENS AT THE PGA Max Boyko ’28 turned the 2026 PGA Championship at nearby Aronimink Golf Club into a career-defining opportunity, earning a media credential and capturing nearly 8,000 images. Many of his photographs were featured across the PGA Championship’s official media and social channels, reinforcing his goal of pursuing photography professionally.

RAIN GARDEN TAKES ROOT Thanks to support from the Environmental Leadership Fund, an endowed fund established by the Class of 1970, EA students created a new rain garden behind the Upper School. Planned by members of the Sustainability Club alongside faculty and staff, the garden features 12 native plant species that attract pollinators, increase biodiversity, and help manage stormwater, and gives students hands-on experience in environmental stewardship.

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS INSIGHTS

Religion Department Chair and alumnus Mike Sheehan ’04 curated the first in a new series of community-curated shelves in Annenberg Library, sharing books that have challenged and shaped his perspective. His display launched a new tradition that will invite other members of the EA community to share the works that have influenced them.

EA welcomed Peaches Valdes, dean of admission and financial aid at Wellesley College, for two days of programming with students, families, faculty, and staff. Drawing on more than two decades of admissions experience, she encouraged students to pursue authentic interests, embrace self-discovery, and approach the college process with perspective rather than perfection.

10K MEALS PACKED The Lower School partnered with Rise Against Hunger to package 10,000 meals in just over two hours. Following a Chapel reflection led by Head Chaplain Fr. Tim Gavin, Hon., students rotated through timed packing shifts in the Tierney Dining Hall, working alongside teachers and parent volunteers to measure, weigh, seal, and box meals destined for communities facing food insecurity around the world.

The boys won the league title for the 6th time in seven years and ran to 2nd in the state championship race. They finished 3rd at the Abington Invitational, 3rd at Delcos, and 12th out of 100+ teams at the Paul Short Invitational.

In the final dual meet of the season on EA/ Haverford/AIS Weekend, the squad won 18-43.

Five runners earned All Inter-Ac honors.

It was a remarkable season as the team won a share of the Inter-Ac title and dominated Haverford (24-3) on EA/Haverford/AIS Weekend to help bring home the Sweater. The defense was consistent all season, allowing fewer than 10 points per game.

Jackson Orcutt ’26 finished his career as the most accomplished wide receiver in school history, holding two Inter-Ac career records: most receiving yards in a season and most career touchdown receptions. Nine players earned All-Inter-Ac honors.

Girls’ Cross Country Kendra Williamson ’27, Daily Times Runner of the Year

Girls’ Tennis (15-1)

Highlights included winning the team’s first-ever Delaware County Championship, 2nd at the PAISAA championships, and 3rd place at the Inter-Ac championship race. The girls placed 9th in the Gold Race at the Paul Short Invitational.

Kendra Williamson ’27 won the race and defended her individual title at Delco champs.

Three runners earned All-State honors, and six were named to All Inter-Ac teams.

Inter-Ac Champions PAISAA Champions For the 8th consecutive season, the team captured the league title and went undefeated in Inter-Ac play. And for the 3rd straight year, the girls won the PAISAA championship. This team proved itself repeatedly against elite competition, rising to every challenge without ever shying away from difficult moments or high-pressure situations.

Rebecca Block ’26, Inter-Ac MVP, Daily Times & Max Field Hockey Player of the Year It was a fast-paced season for field hockey as the squad successfully took on nationally ranked teams and ended play ranked #2. A highlight included a big win against rival AIS during EA/Haverford/AIS Weekend and playing in the PAISAA finals against #1 Notre Dame. Six players were selected for All Inter-Ac teams.

Golf (34-3-4) Inter-Ac Champions PAISAA Champions Freddy Hartman ’27, Inter-Ac MVP Boys’ golf claimed all of the top titles over the season, with the final win coming on EA/ Haverford/AIS Weekend with an 11-shot victory to help secure the coveted Sweater. The squad won the Inter-Ac title and tied for the PAISAA Championship. Eight golfers consistently averaged in the 30s, and seven players were named to All Inter-Ac teams.

Eleven seniors led the squad to success, tallying key wins against Malvern Prep (twice), Haverford, and the Westtown School. In goal, Marco Giancroce ’26 and Charlie Esterhai ’27 averaged a less than one goal against average. Michael McGonagle ’26 and Graham Quedefeld ’28 were the team’s top scorers.

Girls’ Soccer (19-3-1) Inter-Ac Champions PAISAA Champions Sofia Gagliardi ’26, Inter-Ac MVP & Daily Times Player of the Year Consistency, resilience, and a clear team-first approach paved the way for success and an undefeated (12-0) Inter-Ac season. The girls tallied 39 goals, conceded only three goals, and recorded nine shutouts. Key wins included defeating league champion Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in both matchups and a third time in the PAISAA semifinals. After a tough loss earlier in the season, the team played past Westtown in the PAISAA finals (2-0).

Inter-Ac Champions Khoi Tran ’26, Inter-Ac MVP

The girls swept The Lawrenceville School and The Hill School and finished 3rd at the Easterns Prep Championship. They finished 2nd in Flight III at the Beast of the East Tournament.

Ivie Enakhimion ’26 led the team in steals (61), and Ari Roth ’26 and Kathleen Stubbing ’26 contributed more than 50 goals combined.

Siena Scungio ’27 led the team in goals and assists. Lilly Smolenski ’27 was also a crucial contributor on offense, with more than 30 goals and 20 assists.

It was a remarkable season as the squad tied the school record for the most wins in a single year and tallied a 7-1 record in Inter-Ac competition.

EA captured the N.J. Garden State Invitational and finished 2nd overall at the Easterns Prep Championship, marking the program’s highest finish at Easterns since 2010. Goalie Khoi Tran ’26 recorded an impressive 60% save rate. Gavin Thibodeau ’27 set the single-season record with 129 goals on 200 shot attempts, and Charlie Smith ’27 shattered the single-season assists record with 81 and 48 steals.

Boys’ Basketball (7-18)

Boys’ Indoor Track & Field

Key wins over Penn Charter, Friends’ Central, Germantown Friends School, and Radnor High School highlighted the season. Leading scorers included Timmy Dennis ’26, Gage Cunningham ’27, and Wynton Foster ’28. Timmy Dennis earned All Inter-Ac recognition.

Stellar performances made headlines throughout the indoor season. School records were set in six events. Abaas Hunter ’26 ranked #1 in PA in the 200m and 400m, and his 200m time is the 5th fastest ever in PA. In the 800m, Kaleb Young ’28 ranked #4 in PA and #15 nationally, and was the #1 sophomore in the country. The 4x200m Relay team ranked #2 in PA, and the squad finished 3rd at the state championship meet.

Girls’ Basketball (13-10) The girls started off the season with a decisive win over Villa Maria Academy and finished 3rd in league play. Other victories included Germantown Friends School, Penn Charter, The Baldwin School, Springside Chestnut Hill, and Notre Dame Prep.

Kate Boerner ’27 earned All Inter-Ac team honors.

Ice Hockey (2-3-4) Wins against LaSalle College High School and Springside Chestnut Hill highlighted the season. The squad played hard through their nine-game schedule, led by senior captains and incorporating new players into the lineup.

Liam Gabe ’28 provided outstanding play in the net behind a solid defense.

Boys’ Squash (14-5) It was an outstanding season as the team played a strong national schedule. In a tight match, the squad fell to reigning national champion Brunswick School (3-4) in the home opener.

EA played to 11th place out of the top 128 teams competing in the US Squash High School Championships. Six players earned All Inter-Ac and All-MASA team recognition.

Girls’ Squash (12-4) The team started strong with big wins over Penn Charter, Baldwin, and Lawrenceville.

The girls finished in 6th place out of 95 teams at high school nationals, where they defeated all of their opponents except the top two finishing teams, AIS and Greenwich Academy.

Five players were named to All Inter-Ac teams, and four were recognized by MASA.

Girls’ Indoor Track & Field The girls placed 6th overall at the indoor state championship meet as Kendra Williamson ’27 repeated as the 3000m winner, breaking her previous meet record. Ava Cavanaugh ’27 took silver in the 800m, breaking the EA record.

During the season, new school records were also set in four other events.

Boys’ and Girls’ Swimming & Diving Joyce Liu ’27, Daily Times Swimmer of the Year The swim and dive teams delivered an impressive season. At the Independent Schools Invitational, the girls finished 3rd, followed by the boys in 4th. Impressive wins were tallied against Hill School, Penn Charter, and Lawrenceville.

The girls also splashed by AIS and Baldwin.

Madison Suchecki ’30 set a school record in the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke, and Joyce Liu ’27 set a record in the 200 Freestyle. The boys set a school record in the 200 Freestyle Relay.

Wrestling (5-9 in dual meets) Highlights of the dual season matches include wins over cross-league rivals Westtown and Lawrenceville. The momentum continued as 19 team members wrestled at least one varsity bout. Six EA grapplers earned 17 medals across seven individual tournament competitions, including five golds. Mason Pacitto ’28 earned gold at Brunswick and The Howdy Duncan. Four wrestlers placed in the top eight at the PAISWT (prep states), three qualified for the National Prep tournament, and three earned Inter-Ac honors.

Baseball (20-9)

Boys’ and Girls’ Rowing

The squad tallied 20 wins, the most in recent team history. JD Amoroso ’27 hit .394 with an impressive 1.059 On-Base Plus slugging mark, along with 24 runs scored and 20 stolen bases. Michael Schaffer ’28 tossed a perfect game, six players were named to All Inter-Ac teams, and Coach Tom Grandieri marked his 100th career win.

Boys’ and girls’ rowing started the spring with the dedication of three new rowing shells, setting up a season of fast racing. At the City Championships, the squad won a silver (Novice Girls’ 4+), and three bronze (Girls’ Varsity 4x, Girls’ JV 2x, Boys’ JV 4+). At the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the Girls’ 2x earned the bronze.

At the SRAA National Championship Regatta, held in Tennessee, three of four EA boats earned berths in the Grand Finals. The Girls’ Varsity 4x rowed to bronze.

Girls’ Golf (17-3) Inter-Ac Champions PAISAA Champions The 5th consecutive Inter-Ac Championship and the 3rd consecutive state championship headlined the girls’ season. Six players qualified for the Inter-Ac Individual Championship. Julia Griffin ’28 was EA’s highest finisher (38). Five players were selected to All Inter-Ac teams.

Boys’ Lacrosse (13-7) The squad sat at #1 for part of the season as it defeated Lawrenceville and proved to be a top program in the country. Other impressive wins were tallied against Georgetown Prep, St. Augustine Prep, and Gill St. Bernard. The team reached the semis in PAISAA and ended the season 3rd in the Inter-Ac. Five players were named All Inter-Ac and All-State, and four earned All-American and All-Academic honors.

Jackson Orcutt ’26 represented EA at the National Senior All-Star Game.

Girls’ Lacrosse (16-6) Sofia Gagliardi ’26, Daily Times Outstanding Female Scholar Athlete “Success requires sacrifice” motivated the team as it faced top nationally ranked opponents and tough Inter-Ac competition. The girls finished 2nd in both league play and in the state championship. Six players earned All Inter-Ac, USA Lacrosse, and All-Academic honors. Sofia Gagliardi ’26 tallied 100+ career goals, Nora Bailer ’26 snagged 300+ draw controls, and Caitlin McCarthy ’26 set a program record (8) for single-game ground balls. Sofia represented EA at the National Senior All-Star Game.

Softball (20-1) Inter-Ac Champions PAISAA Champions Sophia Santinelli ’26, Inter-Ac MVP It was a statement season as the team won the state championship and its 5th consecutive league championship in a battle against Springside Chestnut Hill. League MVP Sophia Santinelli batted an historic .625 with 35 hits, 28 RBIs, 43 runs scored, and 12 home runs.

Sofia Foulds ’26 hit .395 with 19 RBIs and four homers. In the circle, Maia Contreras ’27 delivered multiple shutouts with a 0.583 ERA, 112 strikeouts, and a 0.708 WHIP across 96 innings pitched. Nine players earned All Inter-Ac honors.

Girls’ Track & Field It was an outstanding season as the girls 4x800m relay team qualified for the Penn Relays for the first time, and the 4x400m won bronze. The team placed 2nd at PAISAA, 3rd at the Inter-Ac finals, and 5th at the Delco Championships, where Kendra Williamson ’27 won the 1600m and 3200m.

Ava Cavanaugh ’27 won the 400m and 800m.

School records were set in five events. Kendra raced in the 5k at Nike Nationals, and Ava ran the 800m at New Balance Nationals. Twelve student-athletes were named to All Inter-Ac teams.

Boys’ Track & Field It was an incredible season, which culminated this summer with a first-ever national championship title in the Sprint Medley Relay at the New Balance Nationals competition, and Kaleb Young ‘28 winning the national championship in the 1500m at the AAU Junior Olympic Games.

Other highlights came at the Penn Relays as the 4x100m relay finished 2nd in PA and broke the school record, and the 4x400m set the school and Inter-Ac records and qualified for the first time for the Championship of America. Abaas Hunter ’26 claimed the PAISAA individual title in the 400m.

At the Inter-Ac Championships, Kaleb Young won the 800m, Dawson Brown ’27 won the triple jump, and the 4x800m and 4x400m relay teams both

captured titles, with the 4x400m breaking both the PAISAA and Inter-Ac meet records.

The team finished 2nd at Inter-Acs, 3rd at PAISAA and the Delcos champs. Ten team members earned All Inter-Ac honors.

Boys’ Tennis (10-4) Preston Lubiniecki ’27, Inter-Ac MVP The team finished 2nd in league play and advanced to the semifinal round of the PAISAA tournament. Two-time Inter-Ac MVP Preston Lubiniecki won the Inter-Ac Singles Championship. Key wins included matches against Hill School, Malvern Prep, Lawrenceville, Penn Charter, and Germantown Academy.

PreK, REIMAGINED

Fall 2025 marked the opening of a brand-new PreK wing, thoughtfully renovated to provide modern, flexible spaces for EA’s youngest students to play, learn, and create. The renovation made it possible to expand PreK from two sections to three as well as reimagine the Lower School’s science classrooms. The bright and welcoming space was brought to life through the generosity of two EA families who believe deeply in EA’s mission and the promise of early childhood education. The wing honors two beloved former teachers, Nancy Reinhard, Hon., and Joyce Gavin, Hon., whose joyful teaching and steadfast care have shaped generations of students in Mind, Body, and Spirit.

Stage Studio

With its spring production of horror comedy musical Little Shop of Horrors, The Domino Club brought the zany story of a hapless Skid Row florist and his iconic, talking alien plant to life. Later in the spring, The Domino Club dominated the Greater Philadelphia Cappies awards for its fall production of Pride and Prejudice, earning 13 nominations for its cast and crew.

The Ridgway Black Box Theater was filled with the spirit of hope thanks to the Middle School Harlequin Club’s riveting spring production of I Never Saw Another Butterfly. In the play, Raja, a child who survived the Terezín concentration camp, shares her story of survival and defiant optimism with other children.

Earlier in the fall, the Harlequin Club got a special visit from original Newsies Broadway cast member Jess LeProtto while rehearsing for Disney’s Newsies, JR. LeProtto led the ensemble in a highenergy choreography workshop and answered questions about his life as a working actor.

After auditioning 600 students from across the region, three EA Upper Schoolers earned seats in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 12 Orchestra.

In February and April, five Middle Schoolers worked under the guidance of renowned conductors at the PMEA String Fests. PMEA District 12 represents public and independent schools in Chester, Delaware, and Philadelphia counties.

Building Together, a community-wide installation in the Crawford Campus Center Gallery inspired by the work of American sculptor Louise Nevelson, combined individual assemblages into a larger, unified work that reflects the creativity and collaboration of EA students, faculty, staff, families, and friends.

For weeks before the exhibition, EA community members created their own assemblages in small shadow boxes, using cardboard, wooden elements, and found materials, in the gallery-turned-studio.

Inspired by Nevelson’s iconic monochromatic sculptures, the exhibition highlights the power of repetition, texture, and a limited palette. Individually, each piece offers a unique perspective; together, they form a cohesive and immersive installation.

This year’s ArtsFest was a color-drenched, communitywide celebration of creativity.

At this culminating event of Celebration of the Arts Week, students, parents, and faculty took an afternoon off from the academic day to enjoy musical performances, visual arts displays, film showcases, interactive poetry exhibits, a recycled object fashion show, and more.

HONORING OUR RETIRING FACULTY AND STAFF Four members of the EA community retired at the end of the school year with a combined 66 years of service. “Our retiring faculty and staff have given so much of themselves to this community,” said Greville Haslam Head of School Dr. T.J. Locke, Hon. “We thank them for their commitment and the care they have shown our students each day and wish them every happiness in retirement.”

Kathleen Foster, Hon., P ’17 ’17 ’18, 24 Years

Kathleen Foster and her family are beginning a new chapter as they relocate to California. A teacher through and through, Kathleen brought energy, humor, and a deep love of learning to her Lower School classroom each day. She was known for holding students to high standards while creating an environment filled with encouragement and joy.

Kathleen built lasting connections with her students, often following and celebrating their accomplishments long after they left her classroom. Her enthusiasm, authenticity, and love of teaching made her a memorable part of the Lower School community.

Anne Neilson, Hon., P ’16, 20 Years

Anne Neilson helped shape a vibrant and organized space where students felt known and supported in our Turner Lower School Library. Greeting each child by name and always ready to lend a hand, she built meaningful relationships with generations of students. Her calm, kind, and consistent approach, paired with a strong work ethic and sense of humor, made her an essential part of the Lower School community, and her contributions will be felt for years to come.

Jim Erwin, Hon., 12 Years

Jim Erwin inspired students through his joy, energy, and passion for music. As a teacher, conductor, and music department chair, Jim built a music program defined by excellence, inclusivity, and heart. His ability to inspire students to perform with both confidence and genuine delight made each performance something special.

By encouraging every student to find their voice, he created a program where connection and growth went hand in hand. His impact will continue to resonate in the lives of his students and throughout our community.

A familiar face to generations of EA families, Sue King helped to strengthen the connection between the school and its parent community. From her early involvement as a dedicated parent volunteer and EAPA president to her work as EAPA coordinator, Sue was the driving force behind countless events, initiatives, and communications. Her exceptional attention to detail and organization ensured that everything ran seamlessly. A trusted advisor and a steadfast supporter, Sue’s humility and commitment left a lasting mark on our community.

WELCOMING MEADOW DAVIS We are excited to introduce Meadow Davis, who recently joined EA as assistant head of school.

A veteran educator and administrator with more than 20 years of experience, Meadow comes to EA from The Athenian School in California, where she served as assistant head and head of upper school. “We believe she will be an incredible asset to our school and a strong addition to our leadership team,” shared Greville Haslam Head of School Dr. T.J. Locke, Hon. Meadow succeeds Chris Torino, who accepted the head of school position at The Blake School in Minneapolis.

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF

1975

The Class of 1975 gathered on campus in the fall to celebrate its 50th Reunion.

The day was packed with fun and reminiscing. They spent the day on campus learning about life at EA today. After meeting with their current student pen pals, everyone gathered on the Clark Campus Green to re-create a fun overhead photo of their class year. Many more laughs and memories were then shared during a special dinner held at Lowry House.

In honor of their 50th Reunion, classmates pledged more than $2 million to the school. As the most successful 50th Reunion fundraising effort in school history, their extraordinary generosity is a powerful reminder that an EA education inspires a lifelong commitment to our community and a legacy that extends across generations.

The Class of 1976 gathered to celebrate its 50th Reunion during EA’s Reunion & Alumni Weekend in May. During the day, classmates visited classrooms, met with their pen pals, and cut the ribbon on the Class of ’76 Field, which was recently named to celebrate the generous gift the class made in honor of its 50th Reunion. Everyone then joined for a special dinner at Lowry House.

The celebrations continued the next night at a special dinner hosted at the home of Rob and Leanne McMenamin.

After a successful golf tournament benefiting the Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship Fund, alumni spent the weekend reminiscing during special reunion gatherings, participating in a special community service birdhouse building activity, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the boys’ lacrosse program, attending our Loyal Blues luncheon, and enjoying the signature Tent Party, where classes ending in 1 and 6 celebrated milestone reunions.

He is selling his house in St. John, so this was probably his last winter down there.

Don Pillsbury met up with Pete Jones and his wife, Caroline, (who are both doing well) at the Celebration of Life for Chuck Evans in April in Washington, D.C. Don is staying active and is still involved in ham radio. To keep his memory from going south and to counter his loss of hearing, he has taken up the study of Morse code.

“We’ll see how that goes.” Similarly, as his skeet game is going to pot, he has taken up pistol shooting and is pleased with the results.

Shared by Chris Rettew, son of John B. Rettew, III (who passed away in February 2023): “My wife, Laura, and I were recently on a cruise in Australia. One evening, we joined a sharing table for dinner.

When I mentioned that I had grown up outside of Philadelphia, the husband, who turned out to be Bil Aulenbach, looked over and said he also was from the Philadelphia area, specifically Germantown, and that he had gone to Episcopal Academy.

My reaction was, ‘Oh my word! My father graduated from Episcopal, too.’

Earlier, the gentleman mentioned he was 94. My mind jumped; my father would have been 94, so I asked if he knew my father, John Rettew, Class of ’50. He said, ‘I was Class of ’50, and Johnny was a great friend.’ He recalled that he played football, and his friends included Roland Smith. There is no way to relate how this chance meeting happened 10,000 miles away from home, but it was wonderful. I can directly relate that Bil is doing really well, living with his wife, Anne, in Irvine, CA.”

Nate Bachman is still working as an entrepreneur. He feels fortunate to live half the time in Sun Valley, Idaho, with his wife of 40 years. He notes that he is the only one left of our five classmates who matriculated to Princeton University and is grateful for that.

Bill Crockett reports that he and Phyllis are now living in West Yarmouth, MA, at Maplewood Senior Living. They are both doing well and are happy to be closer to family. They are an hour away from the family home in Wellfleet, so they are able to go there when one or more of the boys are there.

1957

1953 Bill Hoffman reports that life is quiet at this point. He is still in good health and walks a mile most days. He keeps busy cooking, baking bread, and reading.

He is thankful to live in Maine with a wife who is willing to put up with him.

John Clendenning, Howard Morgan, Joe Armstrong, Geoff Worden, and Ray Munder enjoyed each other’s company over lunch at the Philadelphia Country Club.

Maurice Heckscher shared: “Donna and I are still in southern Delaware most of the time and have frequent visits from many of our 15 grandchildren. I’m playing lots of pickleball and doing my best to stay in shape. Soon I will be getting my second cataract operation, so I look forward to being able to tell what my classmates actually look like at our next reunion.”

As Class Agent, Maurice also caught up with classmates recently and passed along these updates: George David is spending less time in New York City and more in Newport, where, for the past three years, he has been restoring a beautiful old nineteenth-century home. He is also spending time in Scotland, where he is honing his golf game.

King Smith reports from Arizona that he feels bad for the rest of us who have to endure cold and snow. If only warm wishes could melt the snow!

Peter Timms tells me that he is raising prize-winning daffodils, as well as trying to build a better trebuchet in order to heave watermelons in a lake! His wife is an accomplished painter. Peter also leads WhiteFeatherCampaign.com and hopes all of us will check it out.

Sam Chew, ever the bon vivant, is headed back to Hollywood. This time, however, just for a visit. If you’ve never googled this young man, he has had quite the career and is worthy of researching!

Laird Evans shared: “As I watch my Pennsylvania woods fill up with snow on this cold January day, I’m reminded of my introduction to Robert Frost so many years ago at Episcopal. My thoughts turn to the realization that we are closing in on our 65th reunion. I hope many members of my class will make plans to attend. On a personal note, all’s well with the Evans family. I spend a lot of time skiing, walking, and hiking, recently highlighted by two weeks hiking in Iceland and another ascent of Mt. Washington.

Jean enjoys swimming every day, and we both enjoy visiting our kids and grandkids in NH and MN. I encourage you to use Class Notes to share your experiences and especially to encourage each other to attend our 65th in 2027.”

John Carty and his wife, Nancy, enjoyed a special trip in celebration of their 50th anniversary.

Warren Cooke and Ken Appel, along with their wives, Cathy and Laurie, got together for dinner at Majorelle Restaurant in Manhattan in a joint celebration of their respective 50th wedding anniversaries. The couples were married two weeks apart in 1975!

Steve Kennedy shared: “Sue and I continue to split each year between Virginia/North Carolina and our farm in South Africa, where we are running approximately 120 head of cattle, plus some sheep and goats. We’re currently experiencing the worst drought we have seen in the 21 years we’ve been doing this, reminding us how influenced we are by things out of our control, as in so many aspects of life! Our grandchildren—two in Cape Town and two in Richmond—have continued to grow into interesting, fun, and capable youngsters. I am no longer any match at all on the golf course for our 15-year-old grandson, currently playing off a 3 handicap. We are about to depart on a three-week trip to Vietnam and Cambodia, with a weeklong cruise up the Mekong River under much more peaceful circumstances than a few of us found so many years ago. We’ll end up at Angkor Wat, where we will spice our Western heritage with some Buddhist philosophy.”

Bob Hallett shared: “Recently, Episcopal approached The Edward E. Ford Foundation, whose board I chair, for a $250,000 Leadership Grant. It was approved, and the school must match the funds. It was good to visit with T.J. Locke, whose leadership has fueled so much of what the school aspires to be.

I have spent 24 years at the foundation, either as its Executive Director or Board Chair. It has been compelling work and an honor to support the mission in service to independent education.

I will step down next November to travel with Nancy. We live in Cleveland Summer 2026

and are close to our son and his family. Our three grandchildren attend Hawken, one of the finest independent schools in the country. The need for independent education is more important than ever in this country.

(I could go on, but will not.) Free time, such as it is, includes walking, golf with my grandson, fly fishing, and furniture making. (Learned much of this when I had a year-long sabbatical as an apprentice to a cabinet maker in Devon, England, as well as in shop class with Mr. Drexel, or Drex, as we knew him.)”

Peter Cornog shared: “It has been a busy time for me. I have been here in Southern California for five years now. I have been dealing with recurrent prostate cancer, which was fortunately caught early. Most of last year required multiple trips back to Cape Cod to help my sister get services for her recurrent breast cancer. Very much enjoy life here in Oceanside in a 55+ community. We are close to our daughters, involved in our community, and take advantage of being outdoors year-round. I am still cycling, gardening, landscaping, and making tables.”

Bill Garver shared: “The only thing I can contribute is that my wife, Pam, and I have undertaken a comprehensive study of Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) in the Southeastern PA area. We are on the waiting list at two and still looking at others as we study the virtues of Class A vs. Class C, etc. It has been a rather revealing search as each has its own virtues and negatives. The whole aging process is an interesting quagmire as you contemplate whether you should remain in your home or go to a place where you can be cared for and thus be less of a burden on your children. I am certainly willing to discuss this conundrum with any classmates who feel so inclined.”

1967 David Lott earned the US Squash Level 1 Professional Certification for Teaching Professionals in January 2025 after attending a program at the U.S. Squash Arlen Specter Squash Center in Philadelphia. In March 2025, he was a finalist in the Maryland Men’s Squash Championship, 70+ division. David’s passions extend beyond squash, and in June 2025, he attended the Martha’s

A FUN HOLIDAY LUNCH FOR THE CLASS OF 1971 In December, some classmates gathered to celebrate the holidays together over lunch. Princeton University dedicated one of its fourteen new squash courts the Bob Callahan ’77 Court, in honor of the late Bob Callahan. Bob’s widow, Kristen, his five sons, and his thirteen grandchildren were present for the ceremony. Bob had been Princeton’s men’s squash coach for 32 years.

Michael Goldstein shared: “I have served as CEO of the JCC of Central New Jersey since 2018, where I’ve overseen agency growth and campus expansion. Having recently acquired three contiguous residential properties, we are gearing up for a $20 million capital campaign. My wife, Carol, and I are currently living four blocks from the beach in Ocean Grove, NJ, right next to Asbury Park. I am still hoping Bruce walks by one day when I am out on my porch strumming my guitar!”

Melanie James Cosgrove is the CEO of MJC Consulting Group, a strategic consulting and market research firm celebrating its 20th anniversary. She credits EA for providing a strong academic foundation and for sparking a lifelong friendship with her classmate, Melinda (Shetzline) Phelps ’87.

Melanie remains connected to the EA community through the Masters Swim Program, where she continues to be inspired by its distinguished coach, Dave Phelan.

Dennis Nicholson shared: “Life has taken me on a meaningful and sometimes unexpected journey.

Professionally, I’ve dedicated much of my work to community impact— serving in leadership roles with the Urban League of Greater Philadelphia focused on reentry, workforce development, housing stability, and second chances for individuals and families rebuilding their lives. This work has allowed me to partner with courts, nonprofits, and city leaders to create pathways to opportunity and dignity.

Family remains my grounding force.

I’m a proud father, deeply connected to my loved ones, and continually learning what it means to show up with integrity, humility, and a growth mindset. Socially, I stay engaged through community events, mentoring, faith-based service, and celebrating milestones with friends old and new.

AN INSPIRING DISCUSSION ON VALUES-BASED LEADERSHIP Philadelphia-area alumni gathered for mingling, breakfast, and conversation in February. Special thanks to Ann Madara Kraftson ’85 P ’19 ’23, managing director at The Oxbridge Group, and Ashley Lunkenheimer ’92, general counsel and chief compliance officer at Ennoble Care, for leading an inspiring discussion on values-based leadership. They spoke about authenticity over performance, credibility that compounds over time, and the discipline of doing the work long before anyone is watching. They spoke about the importance of courage, reflection, and a strong agility quotient, especially when plans unravel and failure becomes the teacher. Both shared deep gratitude for the foundation they built at EA, including lessons in resilience, teamwork, and principled decision-making that continue to shape how they lead.

Christian Johnson shared: “I’ve been living in Darien, CT, for the past 10 years after 20+ years in New York City. My daughter is in 5th grade, and my son is in 1st grade, so I’m playing catch-up with many of my EA classmates. I had an amazing cheesesteak at Evan Stein’s ’89 bar for an EA NYC alumni social in October. And in December, while visiting my wife’s family in Carmel, CA, I scheduled drinks with Richard Kim ’89, who happens to be my mother-in-law’s ophthalmologist.”

It was none other than Chuck, Hon. and Kempley Bryant, Hon., looking little changed by the past 30 years. “We had a great time catching up and enjoyed the incredible serendipity! The chance encounter made me appreciate the lasting impressions and memories of EA’s amazing faculty.”

Vladimir Puskovitch shared: “I’m wrapping up my master’s degree at West Chester University in percussion performance and am applying for doctorate programs right now! I auditioned for and was accepted into the 2026 World Percussion Group for their European Grand Tour in April 2026!

I am 1 out of 18 percussionists selected from around the world, and I will have the opportunity to perform and teach at major European Universities.”

Congratulations, Class of 2026!

EA celebrated the 137 members of the Class of 2026 during the school’s 241st Commencement on June 11, 2026.

This year’s student speakers were valedictorian Alice Wu and salutatorian Ryann Newcomb.

“Esse quam videri has taught us that our goal is not simply to become impressive people, but to become people who are real: people whose genuine joy lights up a room, people whose boundless curiosity is as contagious as it is pragmatic, people whose ambitions are rooted in love,” shared Alice.

“Strengthened by respect, kindness, and care for one another, the Episcopal experience breeds excellence in both endeavor and character,” shared Ryann. “Perhaps the greatest gift Episcopal has given us is a community where achievement and benevolence work in tandem.”

“This school and your hard work have given you doors to open,” Greville Haslam Head of School Dr. T.J. Locke, Hon. said to the graduates. “Your education will help you open them, but your kindness may determine what people remember after you walk through. Congratulations, I will genuinely miss you.”

“May we leave Episcopal not just ready to seem, but brave enough to be,” said Alice.

In Memoriam Alexander “Sandy” McCurdy, III ’57 Alexander “Sandy” McCurdy III ’57 died on March 22, 2026, two days after his 87th birthday, surrounded by his family.

Few alumni were more deeply formed by EA. Sandy entered at age three and remained through graduation, a true lifer who excelled as an athlete, musician, and devoted Chapel participant. An All Inter-Ac football player and accomplished organist, he later reflected that EA’s greatest gift was not academic achievement but the formation of character through the example of dedicated masters and the rhythms of Chapel life.

After graduating from Wesleyan University and studying at the Sorbonne, Sandy answered a call to the priesthood. Ordained in 1964, he returned to EA as assistant chaplain, where his thoughtful preaching addressed both the Gospel and the pressing moral questions of the era, including civil rights and the Vietnam War. His vocation later expanded to Jungian psychoanalysis. After training in Berlin, where he became fluent in German, Sandy served as both chaplain and analyst before establishing a long practice in Europe and later Philadelphia. Throughout his life, he remained devoted to the care of souls through both ministry and counseling.

Sandy shared 35 years of marriage with his wife, Patsy, and delighted in music, books, travel, and summers sailing in Maine. His children, Gregory McCurdy ’83 and Daphne Sigismondi ’84, and step-grandchildren, Julia Tyson ’11, Tricia Tyson ’12, and John Tyson ’14, continued the family’s Episcopal tradition.

Cannie C. Shafer, Hon. Cannie C. Shafer, Hon., whose 30 years of service helped shape generations of EA students and faculty, died on June 7, 2026.

Joining the faculty in 1979 during the early years of coeducation, Cannie quickly became a beloved teacher, coach, advisor, and mentor. She later served as head of lower school on the Devon campus and assistant head of school, providing leadership through major milestones. As one of EA’s pioneering women faculty members, Cannie played a pivotal role in advancing opportunities for girls. A gifted athlete and coach, she helped build the girls’ athletic programs, coaching field hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and squash, and was a founding member of the Girls’ Inter-Academic Athletic League.

Cannie will be remembered as much for her joyful spirit as for her leadership. Whether leading the Hibernia Experience, cheering from the sidelines, driving a tractor for Harvest Day hayrides, or delighting students in an unforgettable Halloween costume, she brought warmth, enthusiasm, and deep school pride to every aspect of campus life.

After retiring from Episcopal in 2009, Cannie continued serving independent schools and educational organizations in leadership roles. Her EA legacy also lives on through her family: her husband, Win Shafer, Hon., served on the faculty for 38 years, and their children, Francie ’05 and Blake ’08.

Philip James Spear, Jr., Hon. Philip James Spear, Jr., beloved former English teacher and longtime member of the EA faculty, died on September 11, 2025, at the age of 80.

Phil joined EA in 1975 and devoted 30 years to the school, leaving an enduring mark on generations of students and colleagues. A gifted teacher with a sharp intellect and characteristically dry wit, he challenged students to think critically, write clearly, and engage deeply with literature. Demanding yet deeply supportive, he helped students find their voice while fostering a lifelong appreciation for language and ideas.

During his distinguished career, Phil served as chair of the English department for 19 years, as well as director of admissions and interim head of the upper school. Colleagues admired his wisdom, steady leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellent teaching. Upon his retirement in 2005, he received the Bishop William White Award, the school’s highest faculty honor, recognizing his profound contributions.

Born in Winchester, Mass., Phil graduated from Rutgers University and earned a Master of Arts degree in teaching from Harvard University, where he met his wife, Marynelle. They shared 56 years of marriage and raised their daughter, Betsy ’97. Before beginning his teaching career, Phil served in U.S. Army military intelligence. Outside the classroom, Phil enjoyed birding, fishing, food and wine, cheering on the New York Mets, and traveling with Marynelle, especially to Italy and the Berkshires.

Archives STARRING THE HEADMASTER:

Jay Crawford and Haverford Day Every fall, the biggest question on campus was not whether Episcopal would beat Haverford. It was what the late Jay Crawford would do at the pep rally.

For nearly three decades, the headmaster turned the annual Haverford Day rally into must-see theater. His skits were legendary: always a closely guarded secret, always perfectly timed, and usually a little over the top. He appeared as Batman. He channeled Sonny Crockett from “Miami Vice.” In 1994, riding the wave of a Jim Carrey blockbuster, he came out as The Mask. He rappelled down the side of a building. He roared in on a motorcycle. Whatever the year’s surprise, he threw himself into it with complete joy.

Pulling it off took a quiet production crew.

Rosemary Crawford never gave anything away.

Len Haley, Hon. could always be counted on to track down the complicated props, and, just as importantly, to keep an eye on Jay’s safety.

The students, of course, never knew what was coming, which was exactly the point.

“He was infamous for his spirit, costumes and choreography,” remembered Demetrios Hadgis ’95. To Gina Buggy, Hon., who served as athletic director under Crawford, the skits captured something essential about the man. “He didn’t just build school spirit,” she said. “He lived it right alongside the students, and they loved it.”

Decades later, alumni still talk about it: the costumes, the stunts, and a headmaster who was never too dignified to make them laugh.
