Hope does not disappoint

I hope this letter finds you and your family safe and healthy amidst the current COVID-19 pandemic.

As we all practice social distancing, you may find yourself with a little extra reading time. We hope that the stories and photographs in our latest Connections issue will bring some warmth and joy to your day.

We began our 235th school year in September with great excitement and a renewed energy following a restful and productive summer. Little did we know at the time what this school year would have in store for us. From the Great Depression, to countless wars and global conflicts, to other public health crises, our school has faced some extremely challenging times.

Our perseverance through this moment will reflect another chapter in our storied history.

Throughout the past few weeks, we have found ourselves needing to shut down our physical campus, swiftly transition our school to a remote learning environment, and postpone or cancel some of our community’s most beloved spring and end-of-year traditions. While we knew it was likely that we might not return to campus, our Governor’s recent decision to officially close schools through the end of this academic year still hit us hard.

I have personally found great solace in this year’s Chapel Theme, Hope does not disappoint (Romans 5:5). Unbeknownst to them at the time, our student leaders in the Upper School Vestry and the Lower and Middle School Chapel Councils chose an extremely fitting theme for us to live by this year. As a community, we must keep this theme top of mind and continue to support one another, even while we are physically separated. I have great hope that the actions we are all taking will result in our safe and jubilant return to our beloved campus and to our typical routines one day in the future. That day is a bright spot that we must all keep in focus.

In the meantime, we will hold fast to our mission to challenge and nurture our students in Mind, Body, and Spirit. Our faculty continue to leverage technology to advance their instruction and adapt their curricula to achieve effective student engagement. Through their resilient spirit, our students are rallying around one another and finding ways to help those in need in our broader communities. Our parents have continued to help us celebrate our students, all while juggling work, home-schooling, and caring for family members. Our alumni have been hugely supportive of their alma mater, offering any and all help they can to our school. It is always inspiring to see our community come together, and the strength and power of our wide-reaching Episcopal family truly shines in times like these. I know that we will emerge from this dark time as an even stronger school.

The strength and beauty of our community lies in our commitment to one another and our shared values. Our community is also further enriched by the varying backgrounds and viewpoints that we each, as

individuals, bring to the table. As evidenced in our cover story (page 18), there is great power in learning with and from those who may have different perspectives.

The timing of this piece is especially poignant, as we see leaders around the world leveraging their unique expertise and backgrounds, while working as a team to combat this terrible virus.

We know the value in seeing the world through others’ eyes and work tirelessly to infuse this throughout our instruction and student experiences. You will read some examples of how different perspectives enhance the learning environment in our classrooms, arts studios, athletics program, and beyond. We are also able to elevate our learning community by surrounding our students with classmates who possess diverse viewpoints, varied backgrounds, and unique talents.

We believe our thoughtful approach today will help to develop globally-minded, empathetic leaders for tomorrow who are skilled at finding creative solutions to difficult problems. Our young scholars will one day be responsible for critical issues, such as public health, and we want to prepare them to successfully lead our world through whatever challenging times they may face.

We also have to thank our budding photographers in Lower and Middle School. Their impressive work helps to visually demonstrate the beauty that can be discovered through looking at an object from a different perspective. The photographs they captured across our campus provide beautiful visuals for this issue and help us all feel a little closer to the physical spaces we greatly miss right now.

In closing, please know that we remain ready to support our entire community. Please feel free to reach out to our chaplains, our alumni office, or anyone at Episcopal if we can be of assistance to you or your family. Hope does not disappoint, and it is my hope that we will all see each again very soon.

GLOWING REVIEWS

There was a wild rumpus of sorts in the Lower School last fall, as the drama room was transformed into the pages of favorite childhood book, Where the Wild Things Are, by author and illustrator Maurice Sendak. Under the direction of Lower School Art Teacher Meghan Cangi-Mammele, students designed and decorated leaves, waves, stars, creatures, and other important details of the book. All of the artwork was painted in neon colors and illuminated with a black light.

Lower School Students Explore Indoor Tower Gardening Pre-Kindergarten students returned to school after winter break excited to discover that seeds planted in the late fall were ready for harvest in the Idea Lab Tower Garden. “Was that growing when you were here before?” asked Lower School Technology Coach Christian Cloud. “No!” said Aria.

Students then shouted a resounding, “Yes!” when asked if they’d want to pick some lettuce. “The aeroponics system is really easy to use and as we roll out the program, the students are growing and maintaining the system with only a little guidance. And they decide what they want to grow and what to do with their harvest,” explained Pre-K Teacher Nancy Reinhard, Hon. Lettuce, arugula, spinach, mint, and edible flowers, called nasturtiums, were among the first items harvested. “The students are amazed that we are growing things indoors.

Everything on the tower is edible, and we have even the most reluctant veggie eaters trying to take a nibble,” said Mr. Cloud. “We had a great teaching moment where we discussed how plants flavor a lot of the foods we eat and that a candy cane tastes like a plant, not the other way around.”

Students took their harvested lettuce back to their classroom to enjoy some salad with lunch. “I love salad!” shared Scarlett.

Each vertical tower holds 20 plants, so the entire class was involved in the harvest. The tower is also mobile and compact, so it can be moved anywhere on campus to facilitate learning. “With an indoor garden, the students explore the various conditions that either promote or inhibit growth,” said Mr. Cloud. “Students are also learning how to farm through aeroponics, measure and chart data, and learn where their food comes from. It allows us to speak about the food system as a whole and how science and technology can help to sustain it.”

A twist of technology brought The Three Little Pigs to life for students in Ryan Learn’s 2nd grade class. Students used Bloxel technology, which includes a tactile board, to design video games to get the pigs away from the Big Bad Wolf.

The Lower School Regatta challenged students to think, design, and create a 3.5” x 6” boat, made out of recycled materials, to race down a nine-foot, water-filled gutter.

Fourth grader Harper Bruder won the all-school race.

Students in Betsy Welch, Hon. and Barbara Hartman’s classes wrangled heavy wooden poles and a giant tarp, along with a lot of 2nd grade muscle power, to raise a 16’ tipi as part of their Native American unit of study.

Middle School Global Online Academy Mini-Course Eighth grade students in the Middle School Decisions class tested out online learning through a two-week minicourse offered by Global Online Academy (GOA). “Our GOA site director, Dr. Adam Lavallee, Hon., approached me with the offer to share this class with my students,” explained Experiential Learning Coach and Middle School Health Teacher Kim Piersall, Hon. “Considering the title, Grit, Growth, and Gratitude, he thought it would be a good fit with my health program.”

The class was part of GOA’s Learners for Life series.

“Students also had remote access to the class during non-school hours, which is one of the benefits of taking an online course,” shared Ms. Piersall. Students were encouraged to plot their own path and then share what they learned with a creative, non-traditional presentation.

“It was cool to have the choice to focus our time based on which part of the course interested us most,” said Izzy Rozes ‘24.

“The 8th graders jumped in on day one,” said Dr. Lavallee.

“The directions and instructions were intentionally a bit vague. The idea that they had control of what they were learning within the course and agency over how they were going to demonstrate their understanding was new to them.”

“Since we have been learning one way most of our lives, it was neat to discover a new way of learning and a new perspective,” observed Jack Crowley ‘24. Students shared what they learned through a variety of presentation media.

“The projects ranged from an online Jeopardy game, to digital comic strips, to a mock sportscast, to a newspaper editorial,” said Ms. Piersall. “The most impressive part was the way that students could manipulate the material and discuss it in a real-life manner. This is learning for life!”

Rohan Dalal ’25 took home the Middle School Geography Bee title after accurately answering a question about climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

Two Middle School robotics teams won awards at the FIRST Lego League robotics competition in December.

Team 39715 won the Teamwork Award. Team 6309 won the Inspiration Award and qualified for the FIRST Mid-Atlantic-FLL Championship.

Students celebrated the end of the first trimester with the annual Pie Race, which included creative costumes, running and scooter races, and pie for the winners.

Upper School Students Pursue In-Depth Study Through Lilley Fellowships Five juniors have been awarded 2020-2021 Lilley Fellowships. Each student will focus on a specific area of research during the school year and summer and then present their findings in the fall. “We are excited to have these five students as Lilley Fellows, as we begin the third year of the program,” said Program Director Max Kelly ‘06. “Each student reflects our student community’s diverse academic interests and intellectual curiosity. The Lilley Fellowship committee had tough decisions to make this year based on the high number of applications and the quality of students’ proposals.

The process is rigorous and intense.”

Erica Feehery ‘21 will work on an application to help teach math to children with autism spectrum disorder. Kat Harrar ’21 was a 2019 Fellow and will continue her farm-to-feed project by working more closely with the Edible School Yard to develop a larger curriculum with EA teachers. Mary Cipperman ’21 will examine voter registration fraud and restrictions in the United States and Pennsylvania. Krissie Essilfie ’21 plans to study the effectiveness of international Peace Support Operations in resolving and aiding crises. Vince Vento ’21 will delve deeper into his interest about wrongful convictions in America. Each student will work closely with a chosen faculty mentor.

“The selected students not only have different types of projects, but they also have different academic passions,” said Mr. Kelly.

“This combination, and their demonstrated work ethic, will make for an exciting year in the Lilley program. We look forward to seeing how each Fellow develops as a scholar and in character throughout the year.”

The Lilley Fellowship Fund was established in 2018 through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. William Lilley, III ‘55. The research fellowships are awarded to students who exemplify academic curiosity, intellectual rigor, and scholarly passion. The Lilley Fellows pursue an independent study to create a capstone product while working in a professional setting to develop their expertise and interests.

Mary Cipperman ’21 won the Raju Foundation annual essay contest, which includes a $10,000 scholarship. Her essay focused on transhumanism. Half of her scholarship money was earmarked to endow a piece of art, which she selected, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The math team added a final win to its overall tally, ending the fall season with a 5-3 record. The team beat Haverford, Agnes Irwin, Baldwin, Penn Charter, and Westtown in the final competition of the season.

Honors Anatomy and Physiology students recently visited Drexel University’s College of Medicine, where they learned more about the nervous system and explored a cadaver lab.

Lynne Hay, Hon. Faculty News Current Assistant Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Todd Fairlie, Hon. has been named EA’s new athletic director. He will assume his new role in the fall 2020 following the retirement of Athletic Director Gina Buggy, Hon. Also succeeding Gina Buggy, Hon. in fall 2020 is Stefanie Fee, who will serve as EA’s new head varsity field hockey coach. Stefanie is the co-founder and president of PowerHouse Field Hockey Club and has competed in both the World Cup and the Olympics.

The 2019-2020 D’Ambrosio Fellows have been named: Lower School Music Teacher Deborah Newnham, Hon.; Middle and Upper School Classics Teacher Lee Burnett; Upper School English Teacher Lee Billmyer, Hon.; and Theatre and Arts Department Chair Dan Clay, Hon. The D’Ambrosio Fund for Extraordinary Faculty recognizes outstanding EA educators who have a transformative impact on their students.

Classics Teacher Dr. Melanie Subacus shared her expertise with students and faculty at Radnor High School’s annual Mary Brown and Dr. Donal McGay Lecture in January. “Doc Subac,” as she is known by her students, explored the Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero’s Orations, as well as public art’s role in constructing national identity.

Athletic Trainer Dr. Cathy Holt, Hon. received her Ph.D. in health sciences from California University of Pennsylvania.

Middle School Teacher and Athletic Director Dr. Doug Borgerson, Hon. was elected council president for the Borough of West Conshocken.

In her 40 years at EA, retiring History Teacher Lynne Hay has inspired generations of students. From beginning her tenure as one of the only female faculty members in the Upper School, to serving as director of admission for 23 years, to seeing the school transform through coeducation and a new campus, Mrs. Hay’s history at EA is as fascinating as any era she teaches in her classroom.

What was it like to arrive at EA as one of the only female teachers in Upper School?

My experience was positive overall, though there were definitely some growing pains at the beginning. Because it was such a novelty to have a female teacher, there were a lot of students and faculty who wanted to get to know me. However, I also remember bristling every time a faculty member or student would call me a ‘girl.’

You started the year before coeducation was established in the Upper School.

Did you have a special bond with the first coeducational classes?

Definitely. I have a very good connection with the classes of the early 80s because we were all learning the ropes and going through coeducation together. The girls were an unknown entity in the student body, as I was in the history department and Upper School faculty overall. Everybody, students and faculty, had to figure things out together.

What do you perceive as EA’s biggest changes since you began?

Our history curriculum has evolved. I used to call our old freshman course “Homer to Hitler” because we had to pack so much into it. Now, our classes are much more inclusive and global.

From a student body perspective, I am thrilled that our school is now much more diverse religiously, racially, and socio-economically in addition to achieving a much more gender-balanced classroom.

If you had to pick, what is the single best moment of your tenure?

One of the predominant challenges throughout much of my time as director of admission was assuring prospective families that EA was truly a coed school. Head of School Jay Crawford (1973-2002) was a strong supporter of coeducation, and as a retirement ‘gift’ he wanted gender parity in enrollment. The day he retired, I presented him with a spreadsheet of our admission numbers, with just one more boy than girl.

From the founding of The Episcopal Academy to the dawn of the American Revolution, countless historical events have taken place in Philadelphia. We asked EA history teachers about their favorite landmarks in the city of brotherly love.

Independence Hall. The Declaration of Independence, arguably one of the most important political documents written, and the U.S. Constitution were both debated and signed here. It is still one of my favorite places to visit.

Forbidden Drive along the Wissahickon Trail provides a look into 19th century Philadelphia, including remains from old mills, a working inn, and statues—plus great hiking and biking.

Bert Howlin, Hon.

Built in 1763, St. George’s Methodist Church can be found tucked under the base of the Ben Franklin Bridge.

The Church’s history includes a handful of our Nation’s Founding Fathers and a progressive stance on racial equality.

St. George’s also played host to my wedding, so I am a bit biased.

Formative Assessments for Fluency

The difference between earning a 4 and a 5 on the Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Language & Culture exam often comes down to the ability to understand and communicate linguistic subtleties with other Spanish speakers. For this reason, Señora Cristina Deirmengian is always looking for ways to help her students pinpoint the areas they need to work on to achieve true fluency.

“I am always trying to assess if they are really learning the conversational part, and how I can help each individual student to focus on the unique areas they need to work on,” she shares.

After they finish their next email draft or complete a test, the students go back to their sticky notes to see if they improved upon the areas they had previously identified.

Importantly, Señora Deirmengian does not read the sticky notes until after the section has been tested. She wants students to trust that this is a tool for them to use and that they will not be graded on it.

EA’s Spanish curriculum aims to build proficiency little by little, but AP is different, she says. Señora Deirmengian must help her AP students learn how to craft an email, write a cultural comparison, develop a persuasive essay, and have an oral conversation. Last summer, during an AP Spanish conference, she resolved that she needed to find a better way to encourage her students to refine their skills.

The answer came to her this fall when she attended a Faculty Learning Community (FLC). A recent addition to professional development options for EA faculty, FLCs are ongoing on-site workshops where faculty gather to explore research on teaching techniques and to share advice with one another. This FLC focused on formative assessments.

Instead of waiting until the completion of a lesson or unit of study to test a student’s knowledge, teachers use formative assessments as small check-ins throughout the lesson or unit. This approach also helps students to identify areas they need to work on.

Some of the discussions in the FLC centered around ways to encourage students to be reflective learners. One suggestion shared was to have a poster board available in the classroom where students could add notes about where they needed help.

During that workshop, Señora Deirmengian had an “aha” moment. She had been encouraging her students to exercise more self-reflection and realized that this tool could help them do just that. “I immediately went back to my classroom and created a poster board for each portion of the AP exam,” she explains. Now, when students practice writing conversational emails, they check their own work at the end, jot down things they are struggling with, and stick them onto the “Correó Electrinico” (Email) poster. One sticky note says “Use different acronyms,” while another calls out “Knowing when to use the perfect or imperfect tense.”

“The students’ skills are getting stronger because they are figuring out where to prioritize their time,” she says.

“I can easily address general challenges in class, but some student challenges are very individualized. Our new tool helps us figure out what those challenges are so that we can work on them together.”

Throughout her 25 years of teaching, Señora Deirmengian has tested out many different techniques. “This is the first time in a while that I have tried something new that worked this well and this quickly,” she explains. “I’ve noticed a big difference using this method. Their work is much more polished.” Sophomore Caroline Burt agrees, sharing, “The sticky notes technique has helped me achieve deeper self-reflection. This system really allows you to improve independently.”

Finding a tool that has had such a quick and profound impact on her students has been rewarding for Señora Deirmengian. She now excitedly shares what she has learned and how her tool could benefit other classrooms with her colleagues. “I’m loving life! I can’t stop talking about it to the others in our FLC!” And, when her students finally cross that bridge from great Spanish speakers to fluent Spanish speakers, Señora Deirmengian is elated. “It’s truly liberating,” she shares.

“They’re ready to go out in the world and communicate!”

A Storybook Ending Longtime Field Hockey Coach, Athletic Director, and Student-Athlete Mentor Gina Buggy, Hon. prepares for retirement.

The nerves intensified first thing Monday morning. The pacing around the office quickly followed.

“Can you believe I am still worrying about this?!” shares a smiling Gina Buggy, Hon. The game against EA field hockey rival Academy of Notre Dame was still five days away. The two teams have been playing each other for 30 years. “It’s kind of ridiculous, isn’t it?” she remarks, as she rolls her eyes at herself.

That game-day angst has fueled Coach Buggy for more than three decades. As she prepares to retire at the end of this academic year, EA’s legendary field hockey coach and athletic director describes her work in a unique way. “It doesn’t feel like a career.

It feels more like a hobby,” she explains. “It feels like something you do because you really enjoy it. It’s hard to coach at any level if you don’t have a genuine passion for what you are doing and a genuine interest in the overall development of young people.”

A Trailblazing Leader Coach Buggy joined EA in 1986 as the girls’ assistant athletic director. While the school had been enrolling female students for a decade at that point, many families were still unsure about sending their daughters to EA. It would take someone with great vision, determination, and talent to build a leading girls’ athletic program.

“The best female student-athletes were opting for the local single-sex schools, and it was challenging to field strong teams in those early days,” explained Head of School Dr. T.J. Locke. “Today, it is almost hard to imagine a time when our girls’ teams were not among the most successful athletic programs in our region and beyond.”

Coach Buggy was selected due to her impressive achievements as a player and coach.

She was an accomplished three-sport athlete at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and went on to become a four-year starter in field hockey and lacrosse at Ursinus College.

She was the captain of each sport and in 1981 earned All-America status in both. After college, she played both sports for the United States national teams. As a member of the U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey Team from 1981-1984, she played in the 1982 World Cup and earned a bronze medal in the 1984 Olympics.

Seven years after joining EA, Coach Buggy was named Head Athletic Director, making her the first female athletic director in the boys’ Inter-Academic League. Today, EA’s entire athletics program is thriving. EA’s student-athletes and coaches are some of the best in the country, and the school’s teams are consistently nationally ranked. Under Coach Buggy’s leadership, 30 varsity teams have won more than 157 Inter-Academic League and Pennsylvania Independent School state championships.

An Inspiring Coach and Mentor While Coach Buggy has had a substantial impact on EA as a school, her impact on her field hockey players is even greater.

Amanda Vos Strache ’99 played for Coach Buggy and continued her field hockey career at Stanford University. She returned to EA as her mentor’s longtime assistant coach. “Exponentially, Gina has impacted thousands,” shared Vos Strache. “She has done so much foundational work to build a relationship so that each student-athlete responds in the most positive way. She makes us work to achieve what she sees is our potential.”

Coach Buggy is known by her players for teaching the importance of teamwork, giving honest feedback, and believing in and supporting them throughout their athletic journey.

“I remember the amazing team culture she built for the program and how every season I learned and grew by having her as my coach,” reflected Maddie Bacskai ’16, who is currently a senior at Princeton University. “She still always comes to at least one of my games each season.”

“Ms. Buggy had the rare ability to shoot straight with young athletes, tell them what they need to hear not what they want to hear, and to do it with empathy and love,” shared Matt Bailer ’97. “I would not have been ready for Division I sports if not for her.”

Coach Buggy successfully prepared countless student-athletes for their collegiate and professional athletic careers. Duke, Stanford, Princeton, the University of North Carolina, Boston University, and Bucknell are just a few of the schools where her players continue their field hockey careers.

Forward/Midfielder Margaux Paolino ’16 currently plays field hockey on the U.S. Women’s National Team and recently finished her college playing career at Duke.

Many people would be shocked to learn that after coaching hundreds of games, Coach Buggy still gets the jitters. “I do get nervous. I get nervous for every game because I want the kids to be at their best,” she shared. “I just want them to go out and fight for every single victory. If you get the victory, great. If you don’t, then you are back at it the next day, together as a team.”

The importance of playing for a team, not oneself, is the backbone of Coach Buggy’s philosophy. “I want our student-athletes to always work hard. I want them to know a positive ‘can do attitude’ goes a long way and to appreciate the impact you can make on a team or a group by giving your all for the betterment of the team.”

The examples she set and the values taught will remain a guiding light for all of her players. “I am still in awe of her today,” shared Christy Palazzese ’15, who went on to play at Duke. “That awe that I felt when I was younger has turned into embodiment of her persona.”

A Humble Legend To say that Coach Buggy is a field hockey legend would be an understatement.

In addition to her extraordinary accomplishments as a player, she earned multiple Hall of Fame honors including, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2016. Most recently, she was named Pennsylvania Coach of the Year by Max Field Hockey.

Within the EA community, she is known for something even more important than these accolades. If you ask anyone to choose the adjectives that best describe her, selfless and humble would rise to the top of a very long list of endearing traits.

Her former players have many memories that demonstrate Coach Buggy’s humility. “Despite being an Olympian, she never talked about herself. Team talks and one-on-one conversations were always focused on the team,” reflected Bacskai.

“She has left a mark on everyone she has touched,” shared Palazzese. “She gave me faith that hard work pays off and taught me to be humble and pay it forward. I am so excited for her to start her new journey and touch more lives in her next adventure.”

“When we talk about the ideal teacher-coach-mentor at EA, we often describe someone who lives the Stripes and exemplifies our motto,” shared Dr. Locke.

“We think of someone who always puts students’ best interests first, who genuinely loves working with young people, who demonstrates humility and selflessness, and who motivates everyone around them to be their best selves.

There is no better way to describe Gina Buggy.”

The Final Buzzer The air was crisp that Friday afternoon. With all eyes fixed on Coach Buggy, she reminds her players, “Let’s pick up the pace, get back to the center, and get the ball!” After sudden death overtime, EA fires one in for the win against Notre Dame, earning the chance to play one more game, and earning Coach Buggy a few more days of pacing her office.

The state championship game would be against The Hill School, the only team to beat EA in Coach Buggy’s final season. As fate would have it, the epic battle would fall on Coach Buggy’s birthday.

On November 12, 2019, she coached her 586th game and added one more win to her overall coaching record (478-97-11). That afternoon, the team earned the field hockey program its second consecutive PAISAA Championship.

This season, the program also celebrated its 13th Inter-Ac League title.

As her players excitedly surround her on the sideline, attempting to celebrate what this day means for her, she immediately turns the focus back to them.

“We did this because we played as a team, every one of you, from the sidelines, the subs, switching positions, I am so proud of you, so proud!” shouts a beaming Coach Buggy. “This is the greatest birthday gift ever!”

As she walks off the field for the last time, she turns and exclaims, “How can I ever coach another game after that, AFTER THAT!?” It was a storybook ending to an incredible career.

Perspectives

In a world where public dialogue is growing increasingly polarized, EA classrooms offer a positive vision of what can happen when a variety of perspectives meet, mix, and even challenge each other. When EA students and teachers with wide-ranging worldviews work and learn together, they recognize that there is power in seeing through others’ eyes. Our best learning experiences find ways to encourage students to understand other perspectives, helping them become more discerning and adaptable critical thinkers. They even become more globally-minded citizens with wide-reaching passions, relationships, and greater self-confidence.

Assistant Head of School Paul Sanders explains that exposure to and appreciation of different perspectives is at the heart of learning. “We know that in classrooms and many other contexts, the collective wisdom of thoughtful groups often exceeds the sum of its parts,” he says. “This is why teams of people often find better solutions than talented individuals working alone. And it’s why the richest learning environments are those where differing perspectives have opportunities to learn from one another.”

Fostering a rich learning environment is a priority for EA’s faculty and administrators. Beyond the classroom, our students have exposure to—and the opportunity to delve deeper into—environments that help them grow as individuals and community members. “I always recommend that students take every opportunity to connect with, and learn from, people who are different from them,” Mr. Sanders

continues, “When considering May Term courses, Global Online Academy (GOA) courses, service experiences, extracurricular activities, celebrations of other faiths in Chapel, and much more, I believe that seeking opportunities to connect with people from wide-ranging backgrounds or perspectives creates powerful opportunities for growth.”

Students who graduate from this learning environment can more easily connect abstract concepts to concrete examples that are drawn from a range of life experiences. This functions through the way that multiple vantage points disrupt cognitive functioning, stimulating an increased complexity with which they can approach issues.

Studies have demonstrated that exposure to different viewpoints and hearing novel ideas in the classroom stimulates critical thinking, encourages perspective-taking, and increases empathy.

These interpersonal skills are also essential in the workplace. Leading companies routinely attest that their workforces need to be trained in a wide range of educational environments that reflect the world in which they work. These companies want employees who represent all backgrounds, who have experience collaborating with diverse groups of people, and who can provide more creative approaches to problem-solving by integrating different perspectives.

From the arts studio, to the classroom, to the athletic field, EA’s teachers and coaches work to infuse their instruction with varied viewpoints and nurture an environment where students respect and learn from each other.

SETTING A

foundation

For our youngest students, it can be difficult to think from someone else’s point of view. Pre-K Teacher Nancy Reinhard, Hon. sees it as her mission to teach her students, who come from different households and communities, how to be a part of their new classroom community and their larger EA community. That starts with being yourself, she says.

“Be who you are, be confident. Once you establish that, then there needs to be an appreciation of others, who are also being themselves.”

Each person is an important part of their classroom community. Mrs. Reinhard explains that part of appreciating others is being kind to them and caring for them. Class starts each day with a morning meeting, where she says, “We say good morning to each person. We make eye contact, and we care whether you are here or not here. We wait and we listen to each person as they talk.”

A frequently-used tool in the classroom is the red heart lamp. When a teacher sees someone doing something kind, they ask the student if they can turn on the heart lamp. If the student is okay with being publicly recognized in this way, they turn on the light and share that kindness with the class.

“We use that opportunity to talk about what makes my heart warm and about how it makes you feel good that you care about others. The heart gives them a visual, and the class gets to feel that too,” Mrs. Reinhard says.

The red heart has been around for years, something Scottie Crockett ’19 referenced in her senior Chapel Talk. It was, in fact, one of the few vivid memories she has from her earliest days at EA. As a fidgety four-year-

old, struggling to stay focused in the morning meeting, she says, “Something caught my eye, a red heart above the left corner of the classroom’s door. I asked, ‘Mrs. Reinhard, what’s that?’ She answered my question, saying that it was a heart lamp, and that if the entire class was good to each other, the heart would glow overnight until the next morning. That was the first of many important lessons that this school has taught me.”

Pre-K students often engage in learning activities with partners, learning that there is a time to express themselves, but also a time to listen. “We talk about respecting opinions,” Mrs. Reinhard says. “The students share how they did something. It may not be how you did it, but maybe you can figure it out in a different way. They start thinking to themselves, ‘Maybe I should try it that way.’”

The class uses a hand signal to help communicate that they are seeing things from each others’ views. Similar to the Hawaiian “hang loose” sign, each student makes a tiny ball with their fist, extends the thumb and pinky, and shakes their hand back and forth. By the end of their Pre-K year, Mrs. Reinhard says, they are using this symbol all the time, showing that they’re aware of others’ needs, aware of others’ desires, aware of others in the world, and how they connect with them. Building that bridge makes them more confident, but also more understanding. “I see many of the students that I’ve taught over the years,” she says, “I see them in the dining hall, and they’re very respectful. They make the initiative to say ‘hello’ and connect, and that’s very heartening to me. They are confident people, understanding that they’re important citizens to the world.”

In the studio, who you learn with can be as important as who you learn from. Department Chair David Sigel, Hon. encourages his classroom to be a place where students hear their own voices and formulate their own strong perspectives, while still being open to having honest dialogues with others about their work.

“This is collaboration in the purest form,” he says, “It’s the physicality of our work and being in proximity with someone else. Our students are engaging with conversations and understanding that what they bring to the table might not be what someone else brings to the table. It’s not always teacher to student, it’s student to student, which is amazing.”

is executed through different painting styles. “Not one of them looks alike,” he says, “Each one of them shows the personal connection the student has with their piece, a visual display of their thinking, a communication they’re having with the viewer.”

Perspectives

In the arts studios, students are often challenged to paint the same still life using their own unique artistic voices. William Sargent ’22 shares, “Everyone is looking from such a different perspective. There are some ideas that you get from each other in the studio. I might want to incorporate something someone else did because feeling-wise and visually they were able to capture what I was going for.”

William feels he is encouraged to put his own spin on everything he works on. “It’s important to learn the basic techniques in the lower grades,” he says. “When you’re starting, everyone’s art looks the same in a way, but it’s important to take what interests you and run with it and see where that takes your art.” As part of the 2-D Design III class, William played a large part in the creative process behind the recent Crawford Campus Center Gallery’s February exhibit, Harlem Stride, which celebrated Black History Month and the Harlem Renaissance.

Those open and honest dialogues where students can be their authentic selves, Mr. Sigel feels, are especially enabled in the arts. “We foster an environment where they’re never uncomfortable or need to apologize for what they’ve done because we’re inviting people to bring the richness of who they are to the table—no matter what their background is,” he shares. “In the studio, we can teach each other to be open-minded and to not be reserved in sharing what we come with and who we are.”

Each of the 17 students in the class created a panel that is black and white on one side, and color—using a shared palette—on the other side. Walking into the space, the viewer’s overall impression is of the explosion of vibrant art and culture. Each student’s panel is richly unique, but coordinates. “We were trying to capture the energy and sudden growth of that period. When you turn around and see the colored panels, it’s a cacophony of visual sound,” explained William. “While the palettes all fit together, they are still individual and represent the perspective of each individual artist.”

Once students build their underlying skills and artistic theory in order to be able to communicate effectively, Mr. Sigel says, they can stretch them into more openended, conceptual questions. Displaying an array of student still life oil paintings, Mr. Sigel demonstrates how each is not only viewed from a different angle, but each focuses on different parts of the display and

“Having that structure of a limited palette allowed them to be free to do whatever they wanted knowing in the end it would be harmonious because they built off the same prompt,” said Mr. Sigel, who encouraged the students to do research on the period and played jazz in the gallery space while the students were painting.

With a deep interest in politics and international relations, EA lifer Nick Christos ’20 tries his hardest to see the world and current events through others’ eyes, starting with his own classmates.

Because very few classes at EA are structured as a lecture format, Nick feels that each student in his classes brings something different and special to his learning. “Half the things I’m writing down are things my classmates say,” he explains. “That’s the learning. Our teachers give us room to learn from each other.”

As a self-proclaimed political junkie and leader of the Young Democrats Club, Nick values the fact that he has been exposed to classmates who come from varied backgrounds and who think differently. “There’s a respect for each other, you feel that very much. We all appreciate and value each other.”

Currently, the Young Democrats meet with the Young Republicans club every other week and try to see things from their point of view. “You’d be very surprised,” he shares. “When we meet with the Young Republicans, we usually find some kind of common ground. We start from a place where we believe everyone should be treated with dignity, everyone deserves respect and equal opportunities, and we end up discussing how those opportunities should be appropriated.”

Much of the shared appreciation for humanity comes from EA’s Chapel program, which exposes EA students to different religious beliefs and practices through speakers who share their experiences. For Nick, Chapel helped him develop the critical skill of empathy. “Chapel is like a think tank for empathy,” he says. “You see people in front of you, and they are not “the other.” Hearing their stories first-hand has taught me to respect and value others’ insights, exposed me to different career paths, and made me more aware overall of life outside of EA.” Nick decided to take Arabic through the Global Online Academy (GOA) in his junior year. At EA, juniors and seniors can choose from nearly 60 courses offered through GOA, a not-for-profit consortium of independent schools from around the world that offers fascinating online courses ranging from Number Theory to Neuropsychology. After taking Arabic, Nick went on to take an international relations course. In both classes, he says, “It has been fascinating to see how where other people live has influenced their viewpoints. Taking the class with students who live in different environments has exposed me to new ways of looking at subjects.”

Nick has chosen to continue his studies at Tufts University, in part because of how diverse, worldly, and civically engaged the student body appeared to him. After learning how to seek different viewpoints and be investigative and thoughtful, he wants to continue to be exposed to classmates from all over the world.

One of the most fundamental ways that students bring different perspectives into the classroom is in how they learn. “We all think and learn a little bit differently,” shares Dr. Sara Tilles, who helps coach teachers on instructional best practices and coordinates on-campus professional development workshops. “When we have the opportunity to hear about how another learner approached a challenge, our own understanding is enhanced. When we hear someone else’s thinking process, it widens our own lens and perspective for how we can approach things in the future.”

In the past, Dr. Tilles explains, teaching was thought of as happening from the top-down. When EA was first founded in 1785, students of all different ages in a single classroom learned by rote memorization, recitation, and copying what was on the board. Today, teachers need to teach to every individual student, constantly reassessing how they are presenting information and how all different types of learners can thrive.

Dr. Tilles explains that at EA, teachers are encouraged not just to teach students about the right or wrong answers, but show how they arrived at their answers.

Many of us learned the “right” and “wrong” ways to do a math problem. In today’s best practice, there are no right ways, or even best ways, as teachers honor all math strategies in the classroom, and believe that seeing multiple strategies is helpful for all students.

In the Lower School, math teachers use “Number Talks,” which are short exercises where students can play with numbers, visualize problem-solving, and perform calculations quickly. Each student draws or writes how they arrived at the answer and shares it with the class. “By learning the different ways you could solve a simple math problem, we are preparing students for more complex problems in the future,” Dr. Tilles explains. “Fast forward to when these kids will be taking the SAT. We want them to have a bank of strategies in their wheelhouse to choose from.”

ice

During the 2019-2020 season, almost a quarter of the players on EA’s varsity ice hockey team were female, including one of the three captains elected by the team.

Studies on co-ed sports have shown that both boys and girls experience a reduction in stereotyping others, while improving girls’ levels of self-confidence and pride.

Having a strong female presence on the varsity team has led to an incredible season and taught all players important lessons about working together, says EA Ice Hockey Coach Steven Schuh. Recently, the team has benefitted from a number of female players who play club ice hockey, including two current seniors who have been recruited to play in college.

While checking is not allowed in all-girls ice hockey, the rule does not apply in a co-ed environment. “Playing on a co-ed team gives the sport a little more of an edge.

I’ve learned to be tougher and take a hit,” says Ainsley Shin ’20. “It’s not like the boys have to reduce their game so the girls can play. The girls have blown into this environment and said ‘we’re here, we’re playing, try and stop us.’”

Because the opportunity to play co-ed ice hockey is relatively new, Senior Co-Captain Jackie Miller feels that the added weight of paving a way forward for future female players pushes her to work harder and bounce back faster after a tough hit on the ice. “Being on an all-girl team, I am just another player, no different from anyone else,” she shares. “But, on the co-ed team, getting hurt is not an option. Staying down for more than a few seconds after I’ve been hit, not an option.”

Jackie was voted to be one of the three co-captains of the team by her teammates, and while being a leader of a co-ed team was a challenge, it gave her much more confidence. It meant a lot to her that her teammates chose her, rather than if she had been picked by the coaches. “The

challenges I face being the captain of a co-ed team have strengthened my leadership in other situations. Being one of the ice hockey captains of two genders made being a softball captain in the spring much easier.”

And it’s not just the female players who benefit from the co-ed team. Senior Co-Captain Dhruv Raman shares, “I’ve come to value and respect the different perspectives that our girls have brought onto the ice. To me and the rest of our team, gender does not influence a player’s ability: it is rather their dedication, work ethic, and tenacity which shine the brightest. It is these qualities which I see and look up to in my co-captain, Jackie. Her skills and experience were instrumental in the success of the team, from film sessions to on-ice systems practice, her comments and suggestions have elevated our game to the next level.”

Leading a co-ed team is not without its challenges. For Jackie, holding male players accountable was a new learning experience. “In the beginning of the season, I struggled with holding people accountable to keep the team flow. Being a girl, I felt extremely awkward having to call out a guy for his actions. After some time, I learned that if you can put in the work and compete with the guys, you will earn their respect. By working hard on the ice, I felt more comfortable holding people accountable. The guys (and girls) on the team started to listen, and the barrier between the two genders started to break down.”

Learning to lead diverse groups in a variety of settings is an extremely valuable lesson for EA students; one they will take with them to college, and later, to the workplace.

Jackie and Ainsley look forward to continuing their ice hockey careers when they head to college this fall.

history class

In AP European History, Kris Aldridge, Hon. works to ensure her students study thousands of years of history through five different lenses: political, economic, social, intellectual, and cultural. She also strives to impart how all aspects of history need to be assessed and understood through not only the filter of the author, artist, or speaker they study, but through both the modern-day historians who write their textbooks, and even the views of their own teachers and classmates.

“Certainly they need to know that events occurred at specific places and times, but they also need to know how those events are perceived and interpreted, what events have been omitted, and how they continue to be viewed over time,” she says. “We have to always strive to be better and better about viewing perspectives from the people whose stories have not traditionally dominated history.”

To help the students learn to question the perspectives and biases of their sources, Mrs. Aldridge showed her students two timelines of the French Revolution: one from her textbook from the 1980s and one from their current textbook.

“Seeing how different the timelines could be blew my mind. I’ll never look at history the same again,” says Casey Kinniry ’20.

Sometimes, getting students to evaluate other perspectives means Mrs. Aldridge will play the devil’s advocate. “Sometimes I will be the opposing voice,” she says, “That often puts me in a position to defend something unseemly or unpopular, or even a belief that a student might hold but is afraid to share.”

Being able to analyze the perspective of a primary source, or their teacher or textbook author, helps students take ownership over their own interpretation of history and use their analytical powers to apply to events in the modern-day. “It’s important to me that my students appreciate that not only historians, but people living in this very moment, are experiencing events differently; your own classmates are experiencing things differently,” she says.

EA students are constantly challenged to think about what they know, how they know it, and where the knowledge comes from, Mrs. Aldridge explains.

“Just knowing the timeline of events, or memorizing the plot points of a novel, or memorizing a math problem, is not going to cut it.”

As a class, each student brings their own unique perspectives to the material, which in turn allows students to learn even more. “I love the way they appreciate the power of our ability as a group to think, challenge each other, and build on our understanding together. It gives me goosebumps, really, to think about how much further down the path we can get when we work together,” she says.

THEN & NOW:

A Tradition of Providing Educational Opportunities The Episcopal Academy has a long tradition of providing educational opportunities to all deserving students. School leaders often took a keen interest in helping ensure a successful path for all students, even after graduation. Deep in the prolific volumes of carbon-copied, type-written correspondence of EA Headmaster William Henry Klapp, M.D. lie letters about a scholarship student named Benjamin Johnson, III. A century later, a similar story emerges with a more recent graduate, Mohammed Toure ’12.

In 1904, Dr. Klapp wrote to Harvard College on behalf of Benjamin Johnson, III. In his letter (pictured), he writes: “He is a bright boy, a fine fellow, and ought to do well both in studies and character. He is anxious to go to Harvard, and I am anxious to have him do so. That is impossible, of course, unless he has help in the way of work and scholarship [...] He has had a scholarship here ever since he was a little boy.”

He goes on to ask if there is any influence he could bring to bear to help him obtain a scholarship.

Also in the archives, we find Dr. Klapp’s letter of recommendation for Ben, as well as Ben’s scholarship application to the Harvard Club of Philadelphia.

Johnson matriculated to Harvard and kept in close contact with Dr. Klapp. After a visit to Harvard, Dr. Klapp wrote to Johnson, addressing him as “My dear Ben.” In the letter, he gave him extensive advice on the course load he should take, recommending that “an all around educated man ought to know something about Trigonometry and possibly Analytics.” He advised him that he could finish in three years if he took more credits, which would ease his financial burden. Johnson went on to graduate in less than three years and moved to New York City, where he worked as a clerk for a stockbroker and remained involved in the Harvard Alumni Association.

Mohammed Toure ’12 came to the U.S. from Guinea, as part of a refugee resettlement program.

Recognizing his academic promise, his teachers encouraged him to explore Episcopal and other independent high schools. When he decided on another school, closest to his house, Headmaster Ham Clark, Hon. visited him and his parents, urging him to reconsider. Mr. Clark assured Toure and his family that he would personally support him through whatever commuting challenges lay ahead.

“Since then, I’ve looked up to him as a mentor and someone who I can go to when facing difficult decisions or need help,” Toure shared. Throughout Upper School, Toure was a Buckley Scholar, and Mr. Clark was his academic advisor. Toure spent a lot of time with the Clark family; at times, he would even stay at Lowry House on campus when late-night activities made it unsafe for him to make the long drive home.

When it came time, Mr. Clark took his advisees on a road trip to colleges and wrote letters of recommendation for them. One of those college visits was to Harvard University, a school Toure had not even considered. “Personally, as someone who had just come to the U.S., I didn’t even see a place like EA to be a possibility, so Harvard was definitely not on my radar,” he said.

In 2012, Mr. Clark said of Toure, “Mohammed loves to learn, he takes a genuine interest in everything around him. His life has been changed by the opportunities that he has been provided at Episcopal, but he has changed a lot of lives here as well.” Toure went on to Harvard and then MIT, where he is studying biomedical engineering with a focus on developing therapeutics for pediatric cancers. He and the Clark family visit each other often, and he credits their personal investment and the generosity of Mr. Buckley ‘55 and other financial aid donors for paving the way for him.

ALUMNI AWARDEES DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD RECIPIENT

Raymond C. Burton, Jr. ’56 For his dedication to EA, Ray C. Burton, Jr. ’56 is the recipient of the 2020 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Ray began his lifelong relationship with EA in 1947 as a 3rd grader. In Upper School, he lettered in football and track and was president of the historical club.

Upon graduation, Ray went to Cornell University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960.

While there, Ray continued to pursue track, winning both the indoor and outdoor Heptagonal Championships in his sophomore year. As a junior, he lettered, and as a senior, he was the top scorer. After college, Ray served on active duty in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer from 19601961. While attending The Wharton School, Ray majored in transportation economics. Upon graduation with a Master of Business Administration degree, he worked for the Santa Fe Railway, and remained in the rail industry until his retirement in 2000.

Ray was passionate about his work in both railway operations and finance, sharing, “The rail industry was America’s first big business and did much to support our country and economic success by linking the continent with rails for the efficient movement of goods.” As vice president and treasurer of Burlington Northern Railroad, North America’s largest, Ray oversaw the effort to raise billions in capital for equipment and facilities. Later, in his 18 years as president of Trailer Train Co., a company owned by all the railroads in North America, he spearheaded the effort to modernize the fleet to meet the demand caused by containerization and import from Asia.

For his long and successful career, Ray was twice named the rail industry’s Man of the Year (1985 and 1993) by Railway Age and has been honored by several universities and the state of South Carolina. Ray served on EA’s Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2004, as well as on the boards of the Citadel, Lincoln Academy of Illinois, the National World War II Museum, and as the president of the John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library. For the past two decades, Ray has been happily married to his wife, Madge. The two look forward to gracefully growing old together.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT

Ann Madara Kraftson ’85 P ’19 ’23 There are few alumni who match the deep love and devotion to EA that Ann Madara Kraftson exhibits. Following her graduation from EA, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from The College of William and Mary, where she played Division I lacrosse.

Ann is currently a managing director with The Oxbridge Group, where she has been an executive recruiter for 25 years. During her tenure, she has helped to build The Oxbridge Group into one of the leading executive placement firms in the investment community. Her deep relationships with leveraged buyout, venture capital, research-driven hedge fund, and investment banking firms have allowed her to repeatedly find outstanding candidates for her clients.

Ann is an active alumna of EA and currently serves on EA’s Board of Trustees, the Horizons at EA Board of Directors, the Women of EA Advisory Council, and EA’s Institutional Advancement Committee. She also co-chairs The Episcopal Fund with her husband, Don ‘85.

Prior to serving in these leadership roles, Ann was the first alumna to serve on the Alumni Society’s Board of Managers (1991-1996) and also the first alumna elected to the Board of Trustees in 2000 and was a member of the Governance Committee from 2002 to 2006. Ann has chaired the Class of 1985’s 5th, 10th, 20th, 25th, and 30th reunions, has served as a new family host for three years, and is a class parent representative.

Ann has been a leader at EA since her time as a student and has devoted hours of service to help Episcopal continue on a path of excellence. She is a most-qualified recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, and she has modeled for her children, Brooke ’19 and Charlie ’23, her peers, and her classmates the importance of service to institutions like EA.

ALUMNI COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT

E. Barry Pinheiro ’60 Barry Pinheiro was a “lifer” at EA, where he was the captain of the football team his senior year. He was twice granted the Philip Marr Lille Award for having led the team “with an untiring spirit and inspiring determination despite numerous injuries.” He was a member of the student fund for four years and vice president of the athletic association during his senior year. After graduating from Dickinson College with a degree in history in 1964, Barry served in the U.S. Army. Barry and his brother, Jack, owned a family chair business until 1983 when he worked in retail management before retiring from USM Transfield Services, a large Australian out-sourcing company. Barry’s sons, Robert ’84 and Scott ’85, not only attended EA, but worked here, as well. His son, Ryan ‘98, and grandsons, Benjamin ’17 and Maxwell ‘19, are EA alumni, as well.

Local non-profits, including St. James School, Friends of Haverford Trails, and Friends of the Grange, Inc., each submitted an enthusiastic endorsement of his long-standing commitment.

Barry began volunteering at St. James School in 2011, when he joined a group of EA alumni for an alumni outreach program service workday. He returned for other alumni service days, plus on days off and on weekends, to assist whenever he could. Once he retired, he volunteered on a weekly basis, becoming known as the school’s “Mr. Fix-It.” Len Haley, Hon. said, “Barry personifies ‘giving back’ to the community. His highly professional work ethic combines well with his sense of mission here in this North Philadelphia neighborhood to give our students a great opportunity to experience the joy of learning in a well-maintained and nurturing environment. We load Barry up with a full list of projects every week – and he keeps coming back for more, and more.”

Since its first rustic trail project in the linear park on Karakung Drive, Barry has volunteered countless hours with Friends of Haverford Trails, building and maintaining trails and advising Eagle scouts in their trail projects. Barry also spends many hours a week caring for various needs of the Grange Estate, planting trees, trimming shrubs, or leading crews of high school students. Beyond his contributions of time and good works, Barry is admired for his humility and selfless dedication to his community. Barry is fond of saying, “You’ve got to give back.”

At the end of the day, you can often find him sitting on the veranda of the Grange Estate, smoking his cigar, taking in the beauty that he works so hard to create, satisfied that he made the world a better place.

2020 YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENTS Zachary C. P. Mondesire ’06 Zach Mondesire attributes his commitment to youth development and politicallyengaged scholarship to his time at EA. After graduating from EA, Zach earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociocultural anthropology from Columbia University in 2010.

He then moved to Cairo to work for an NGO that provides life skills training to at-risk Sudanese refugee youth. His time in Cairo during the 2011 uprising laid the foundation for his scholarly interests in revolutionary politics in East Africa.

Returning to Philadelphia, Zach continued his work with youth by joining a mentoring organization at the forefront of a group therapy program in the Philadelphia prison system. This work illuminated for Zach the experience of incarceration and the need for prison abolition. His interest in youth development and rowing led him to coach at Philadelphia City Rowing Inc., an organization providing an accessible entry to the sport for Philadelphia’s public and charter school students. As a coach and mentor, Zach was committed to fostering a learning environment where sport could be the avenue to ask questions, build coalitions, and grow through one’s struggles both in athletic competitions, and in life.

Since the fall of 2016, Zach has been pursuing his doctorate at UCLA in the department of anthropology. In addition to speaking multiple Arabic dialects, he has studied Amharic and Swahili in order to communicate with multiple communities in East Africa. His studies at UCLA focus on political economy, race, and regional governance in the context of the newly independent country of South Sudan.

Gregory D. Sndyer ’05, MD, MBA At EA, Greg Snyder was an excellent scholar and athlete, graduating cum laude and lettering in three varsity sports - soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse, and playing in the chamber orchestra. He attended Princeton University and graduated in 2009, having majored in molecular biology with certificates in Spanish and neuroscience. Thereafter, he worked as a public health fellow in Guatemala’s non-profit sector, before attending medical school at Jefferson Medical College. Greg believes medicine is “the perfect blend of the sciences and humanities, unlike any other profession.”

While in medical school, on June 17, 2013, Greg was hiking when he fell nearly 40 feet and broke his back, severing his spinal cord and suffering several other traumatic injuries. Greg underwent two spinal fusions before a lengthy stay in the ICU and prolonged rehabilitation. With the help of his doctors, his family, his partner, Christina, and his friends, he got stronger each day and learned how to adjust to life as a paraplegic and to regain independence. Greg persevered, graduating from medical school in 2015 and completing his residency in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He also earned his Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School in 2019. Greg’s experience, as a patient and a physician, gives him a unique lens into the promise and shortcomings of our healthcare delivery system, as well as the importance of diversity in the healthcare workforce.

Greg now practices hospital medicine at Partners Healthcare in Boston, while also working for innovative startups that are attempting to improve the quality and access to health care, including through telehealth. He is also an affiliate faculty member at Ariadne Labs, an entity that studies the implementation of best practices for healthcare delivery. Greg not only survived his fall in 2013, but he has thrived, fulfilling his mission to improve healthcare for other patients and physicians.

Greg and his now-wife, Christina, who is also a physician, have two children.

ALUMNI AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN THE ARTS RECIPIENT

J. D. Pell Osborn ’66 An award-winning animator and designer, Pell Osborn holds degrees from Kenyon College and Lesley University and attended Harvard University for additional study in animation. At EA, he was inspired by Harry Harris’s art classes. He recalls being in art class on the Merion campus, “listening to mellow classical music, free to create a vast array of non-verbal responses to the world around him.” In 1982, Pell founded MotionArt Studios in Boston, where he created animation projects for ABC News 20/20, American Airlines, Nova, Ocean Spray, Raytheon, Save the Children, and UNICEF. His lifelong passion for animation led to the creation of the LineStorm Animation Digital FlipBook Creative Learning Project, which merges traditional and computer animation as a vehicle for teaching and learning.

Osborn is a Creative Teaching Fellow with the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which in part supports his work in schools and colleges in the Boston and New York areas. Since 1998, he has taught animation at Boston’s Museum of Science, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, the New York Hall of Science, and the Peabody Essex Museum.

Currently, as a teaching animation artist, Pell works in schools to create group projects, using animation as an engaging way to explore specific topics from new angles. Recent projects have visualized poetry, fluid dynamics, Newton’s law of gravity, and the life cycle of a star. His students design storyboards, and use lightboxes to draw their artwork by hand. After they add color and texture, he encodes and edits their artwork into a finished group project, which are available on YouTube. These days, he is an avid bicycle commuter and gives historic tours of Boston by bicycle.

Crawford Hill, III ’70 From 1975 to 1992 (with the exception of a sabbatical year in 1989-1990), Crawford Hill, or “Chill,” was a key part of EA’s wrestling coaching staff. Upon graduation from The University of Pennsylvania, Crawford returned to EA in 1975 to teach, counsel, and coach for the next 35 years, serving as assistant wrestling coach to Gus Compson, Hon. until he was appointed head coach in 1980. Crawford coached all but one of the most recent Inter-Ac Championship teams. After not winning the Inter-Ac for over 25 years, the team won several during his tenure as coach. Crawford was the assistant coach for the 1976 and 1978 championships, and head coach for Inter-Ac victories in 1982, 1985, 1986, and 1987.

Crawford is known especially for his unique “Big W/little w” coaching philosophy and instilling a fierce mental attitude in his athletes while always keeping it fun. Crawford is already in the Hall of Fame as a part of the 1976 team. As head coach, he did not have a losing season in 11 years and coached all five EA National Prep School Champions. No other wrestling coach has helped a team win six league championships, making Crawford the most decorated wrestling coach in EA history and incredibly deserving of this honor for those ‘w’s, as he would call them, and more importantly for the countless ‘W’ best efforts he inspired from his teams.

John G. Nimick ’77 John Nimick is a model for the EA tri-sport athlete. In the 1977 Tabula, his classmate, Jamie Brown, described his athletic achievements as “remarkable.”

As a student, John was most known for his achievements in squash, but he also played soccer and tennis in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. In soccer, he received All-Inter-Ac and All-Main-Line honors, and for tennis, he was a part of the undefeated doubles team from the Inter-Ac championship team of 1976. In squash, he was captain of the team his senior year. A testament to his talent, he lost only one match in Inter-Ac play during his entire high school career, and he won the BB Reath Cup and was named All-Inter-Ac in 1976 and 1977.

John continued his squash career at Princeton University and led the team to a national title and was the individual intercollegiate squash champion in 1981.

John was recognized for his exemplary character, winning Princeton’s Skillman Award for Sportsmanship. Through the 1980s, John was one of the top hardball squash players in the U.S., winning the 1982 National Title before turning pro and securing a position as the leading player on the North American Hardball Squash Tour, where he won several major titles. He represented the U.S. at the 1983 and 1985 World Team Squash Championships and won the North American Open in 1988 and 1990.

John has been a central figure in the development of professional squash in the U.S. From 1988 to 1990, he served as the president of the professional hardball association, and then the executive director of the professional softball squash association from 1984 to 1990. Today, he is still a national and international leader in the squash world and runs an event promotion firm, Squash Engine Inc., which runs international squash tournaments. In 2006, John was inducted into the U.S. Squash Racquets Association Hall of Fame, and in 2011, he was honored with their President’s Cup. With his induction to EA’s Hall of Fame, John will be remembered among EA’s and the nation’s top squash players for elevating the level of play and being an example of excellent sportsmanship to all.

Andrew J. Brennan ’00 Andrew Brennan is regarded as one of the best rowers to have ever competed for EA. While in Upper School, Andrew played football for two years and wrestled for four, but he is most remembered for his accomplishments while a member of crew. At EA, he rowed in Varsity 4+ for three years for the National Scholastic Regatta. As a senior in 2000, his boat placed 5th over all out of 56 boats, beating The Haverford School. This was the same year that he won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Croatia as a part of the Men’s Coxed Four, and he was ranked #1 junior man on the ergometer in the United States.

After EA, Andrew continued his impressive career at Yale University, serving as captain during his senior year. In 2003, while rowing for Yale, he earned a silver medal in the collegiate division at the CRASH-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships and was honored with Yale’s George Pew Award, given to the team member who distinguishes himself through hard work, dedication and loyalty to Yale Crew. In 2004, Andrew was awarded Yale’s Blagden Trophy and Gerald R. Ford Scholar-Athlete Award.

Andrew’s rowing career knew no borders. While he rowed at Yale, he competed with the U.S. Team internationally during the summers, earning a gold medal with the men’s eight at the 2003 Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic and a bronze medal with the Men’s Coxed Four at the World Championships in Spain. Andrew rowed for Oxford University after attending Yale, where he participated in The Reserve Boat Race with the 2005 and 2006 Oxford University Isis Crew. Over his rowing career, Andrew’s achievements and work ethic set the bar high for future EA rowers to follow, never wavering as a model of sportsmanship and in his support for his teammates.

Kathryn Spofford Barrett ’01 Katie Spofford Barrett was a lifer at EA and an outstanding player and co-captain in soccer, basketball and lacrosse, helping the Churchwomen to numerous InterAc championships during her high school career. Katie first joined the JV boys’ soccer team at EA because no girls’ team existed yet. During the girls’ soccer team’s first season in 1999, Katie was a junior midfielder, the team’s leading scorer, and a major factor in its unexpected success as it compiled a record of 12-1-3 overall and 6-1-0 in the Inter-Ac for second place. At graduation, she was named the 2001 Main Line Times Athlete of the Year and received the coveted girls’ Sportsmanship Cup. As co-captain for the 2000 season, she was again the leading scorer and her consistently strong play helped the team to an overall record of 13-5 and an Inter-Ac record of 6-1, resulting in a tie for that title. For her outstanding play, Katie was named Athlete of the Month by the Scholium and was 1st Team All-Inter-Ac and 1st Team All-Main Line. Head Soccer Coach Julie Porter commented, “She is the kind of athlete who can dominate those around her with her strength and speed. She has one of the strongest shots I’ve ever seen and shoots with impressive accuracy from long range.” A teammate observed, “Katie’s talent is an amazing asset to the team, her leadership is extraordinary, and her friendship is genuine and sincere”.

In basketball, Katie was a starting forward and was named 1st Team All-Main Line as a junior and was Honorable Mention All-Inter-Ac and 2nd Team AllMain Line as a senior. She excelled on EA’s varsity lacrosse team, which won consecutive Inter-Ac titles in 2000 and 2001. As a junior, she was the team high scorer and selected as Honorable Mention All-American. As a senior, Katie was again the leading scorer with a 56% shooting average, helping the team to an undefeated 7-0 Inter-Ac record and 12-2 overall. She was named 1st Team AllAmerican, was a Main Line Life All-Star, and participated in the National High School All-Star game.

Katie continued her lacrosse career at The University of Pennsylvania, where, as a senior, she was elected the team’s captain and selected as 1st Team All-Ivy, 1st Team All-Region, and Academic All-Ivy.

2003 Girls’ Cross Country Team The 2003 girls’ cross country team is the first girls’ cross country team to be inducted into EA’s Hall of Fame. This team stands out for their strength and dedication, and the tireless work they put into training. Under the leadership of Head Coach Tim Gavin, Hon. and Assistant Coach Dr. Sue Rubin, Hon., the team was undefeated and won all five of its dual meets that season, four of which were by substantial margins. They earned EA’s third Inter-Ac Championship title in Girls’ Cross Country and its first PAISAA Championship.

The top four runners in order of their finishes at the 2003 Inter-Ac Championship meet were Molly Waldron, Ashley Eyre West, Sarah Maguire, and Katie Maguire.

Each was honored as All-Inter-Ac and All-State. Molly Waldron went on to place third at States and was included on the All-Main Line team with Ashley and Sarah. These runners were impressive multi-sport athletes, breaking records in other sports and continuing their athletic careers in college. Ashley Eyre West went on to captain the EA squash team to MASA and Inter-Ac Championship titles in the 2003-2004 season and break EA’s two-mile record in the spring with a time of 12:34. After EA, she played four years of squash at Williams College, where she was named All-NESCAC. Molly Waldron excelled as a long distance runner on EA’s spring track team and continued her cross country career at Davidson College. Sarah Maguire tied Episcopal’s 800M record in spring track and ran at Princeton University. Continuing a lifelong love of running, Co-Captain Kathleen Roach started the cross country program at the Chester Charter School for the Arts in Aston, Pennsylvania, where she is a reading specialist.

Coach Gavin shared, “The 2003 team was not only marked by talent, they supported one another, respected other teams, and never rested on their laurels. The co-captains, Ashley and Kathleen, provided leadership and focus to a group of young women who joined cross country late in their high school careers. Their leadership was the reason why everyone was supportive of each other and celebrated each other’s accomplishments.”

2002 Boys’ Water Polo Team In the words of Head Coach Brian Kline, Hon., “The 2002 boys’ water polo team set the bar extremely high in and out of the water.” For this reason, they are the first boys’ water polo team to be inducted into EA’s Hall of Fame. Individually, their stats were extraordinary and the combined collective talent of this group allowed them to end the season with a record of 21-3, to win the Easterns Prep Championship, and to remain undefeated in Inter-Ac League play, making them Inter-Ac Champions.

In the 2002 season, Captain Matt Welde ’03 led the team in goals and assists with a total of 183 total points (125 goals, 58 assists). Matt Deasey ’03 was not far behind with 169 combined goals and assists, and he led the team in steals with 145 in 2002. As the star goalie, Matt McMonagle ’03 had 392 saves with a save percentage of 65.6% over their 24 games. After 2002, Welde, Deasey, and McMonagle each held the team records for their career statistics: Matt Welde had a combined total of 381 goals and assists in his high school career with 148 steals; Matt Deasey had a combined total of 347 goals and assists with a recordbreaking 358 career steals; and as goalie, Matt McMonagle had 671 total career saves with an overall remarkable career save percentage of 63.3%.

Matt Welde, Matt Deasey, and Matt McMonagle earned All-Tournament honors at the Inter-Ac Water Polo Tournament held at Germantown Academy and were named First Team All-Inter-Ac. Dan DeMento ’03 and Dave Turner ’03 earned Honorable Mention All-Inter-Ac honors. Another remarkable aspect of this team was the addition of female standout Lauren Owens ’04, who, to this day, remains the only female athlete to ever compete in EA/Haverford Day competitions prior to the start of the tradition of EA/AIS Day.

Boys’ Cross Country 6-1 Inter-Ac Champions

The team had an excellent season and won the Inter-Ac Championship. The team finished 7th (out of 22) at the Abington Invitational and 3rd (out of 16) at the Briarwood Invitational. Medals were earned by Owen Maier ’20, Bradley French ’21, and Connor Hanrahan ’23. After earning 5th place in the Delco Championships, the team went on to win the Inter-Ac Championships, marking the second title in the last five years. In the PAISAA championship race, the team finished 3rd (out of 16) with strong finishes by Owen Maier (8th), Bradley French (15th), and Charlie Kraftson ’23 (20th). The JV team won its PAISAA race, placing five runners in the top eight, and the season ended on EA/Haverford Day with a 24-32 win, which helped win back the Sweater.

Girls’ Cross Country 4-3 The team finished the season with a 4-3 league and overall record. Each runner demonstrated excellent effort and improvement throughout the season, working hard to close the gaps between runners and to finish races and workouts strong. The depth of the team showed as the season progressed. At the Inter-Ac Championship meet, the varsity team finished in 4th place, while the JV team finished in 2nd. The JV squad won the PAISAA Championship, and varsity placed 5th in a very competitive field. The team capped off a successful season with an exciting 20-37 victory on EA/AIS Day.

Field Hockey 20-1-1

Inter-Ac and PAISAA Champions The team finished with an impressive 20-1-1 record and marked the final season for longtime coach Gina Buggy, Hon., who will retire at the end of the school year. The team won the Inter-Ac Championship and, for the second consecutive year, the PAISAA Championship. The season included big wins against rivals AIS and Notre Dame.

Winning in the PAISAA finals against The Hill School, the team came together to cap off the magical season.

“Thank you for making my last coaching season one I will treasure forever!” Coach Buggy said.

Football 9-1

Inter-Ac Champions The team captured the Inter-Ac Championship and achieved a 9-1 overall record and 4-1 league record.

The championship is the first since 2012 and only the third since 1983. This marked EA’s 26th Inter-Ac football championship in school history. This year’s seniors leave with a remarkable career record of 29-11, a record that ties with the Class of 2015 for most wins. Senior captains Maurcus McDaniel and Matt Bush led the way this year with McDaniel rushing for 1,300+ yards, throwing for 1,300+, and racking up 36 combined touchdowns. This year’s offense averaged 400 yards and 33-points per game. Big wins over Malvern Prep (29-27), Penn Charter (21-17), and Springside Chestnut Hill (35-34) highlighted the special season with the final (29-27) victory against Haverford to win the league title and the Sweater.

Golf

PAISAA Champions The golf program had great success, and senior co-captains Case Hummer and Jacob Zeng provided strong leadership. The season began with a trip to Florida, where the team played in a 36-hole tournament against Florida schools in the Public vs. Private School Wolverine Invitational, winning the private school division. The league title was decided at the final tournament with a three-team tie going in between Malvern, Haverford, and EA. EA played well but came up a few strokes short. The team bounced back quickly and won the PAISAA Golf Championship, for the first time in EA history, to finish out the season. Jacob Zeng earned both First Team All-Inter-Ac and All-State recognition.

Boys’ Soccer 6-9-4

Boys’ Water Polo 15-15

The season began with a great win at home against public school powerhouse Garnet Valley. The team went undefeated against Friends League opponents with a win against Friends’ Central and ties against Germantown Friends, Westtown, and Shipley. In league play, the team dropped its first three games on the road but closed out the first half of the season with thrilling last-minute wins over Malvern Prep and Haverford. The team went on to avenge earlier defeats and beat Penn Charter.

After being defeated by Westtown in the PAISAA tournament, the team came back strong on EA/Haverford Day, outlasting the Fords to remain unbeaten against them at home. The hard-fought victory helped win back the Sweater and was the first win on EA/Haverford Day since 2005, and the first win on this day at the Newtown Square campus.

Senior captains Vladimir Puskovitch, Ned Morgan, and Ian Reape led the team to a 15-15 overall record and 6-2 in league play. This second-place finish is the highest the team has finished in the league since 2010. For preseason, the team traveled to Tivat, Montenegro, the first international training trip in the program’s history. The team played teams from South Africa, Russia, and club teams from Kotor and Tivat. Upon return, the team had impressive wins over McDonough, Calvert Hall, and Loyola Blakefield. In the Beast of the East Tournament, the team competed in Flight II at the Eastern Prep Championships. The team finished 6th overall and had an impressive victory over Lawrenceville.

Girls’ Tennis 15-0

Inter-Ac Champions Inter-Ac Tournament Champions It was another successful season resulting in the girls going undefeated in league play and capturing the InterAc title and the Inter-Ac Tournament Championship. The team trip to the Point Loma Invitational in San Diego was a season highlight. This tournament was made up of the best teams in California and top teams from Hawaii.

EA went 2-2. The girls gained valuable experience and rallied the team together to take on all challenges in the deepest Inter-Ac league in recent memory.

The squad began the season ranked 1st in Pennsylvania and 7th in the nation in the fall high school rankings. After losing to two nationally-ranked opponents, The McDonough School and The Pennington School, each by one goal, the team regained its confidence and the wins followed with a seven-game winning streak that included scoring 23 consecutive goals. The team notched a 7-4 record in league play. EA entered the PAISAA tournament with a #2 seed and lost in the semi-final round.

Girls’ Water Polo 17-5

Eastern Prep Tournament Champions Beast of the East Champions With 19 athletes on the team and no seniors, junior captains Abby Bonner, Margot LeRoux, and Jovana Sekulic led the young group of girls to step up and play hard. The team had a fantastic and historic season, winning the Beast of the East, going undefeated (10-0) in league play, and winning Easterns for a second consecutive year. Four players were named to All-Eastern teams.

Boys’ Swimming & Diving 5-0 dual meets Inter-Ac League Champions Inter-Ac Invitational Champions

This season the boys’ team pulled over 40 best times, broke eight EA school records and one EA pool record, and set three county records in the 200 IM, and the 200 Medley and 400 Free Relays. The boys’ placed 4th at the Eastern Prep Championship meet. Overall, EA’s combined teams took second. The team has 27 Top 50 rankings in the state and appears in every event, including diving. The season hashtag was #leavenodoubt, a reminder that “greatness is earned—never awarded.” The team was undefeated in dual meet competition.

Boys’ Basketball 13-15 (5-5 Inter-Ac League)

The boys ended a productive season tied for 3rd place in the Inter-Ac. Season highlights included sweeping both The Haverford School and Penn Charter. The team also notched big wins over a strong 2nd place Springside Chestnut Hill team.

The boys’ beat Paul VI and Cherokee, both top 10 South Jersey teams. Alex Capitano ‘20 finished his EA career with 1,132 points scored, making him the 9th all-time leading scorer in school history.

Girls’ Basketball 12-12 (6-6 Inter-Ac League)

The girls’ team swam to a successful season, going undefeated in dual meet competition and winning the Eastern Prep and Inter-Ac Invitational Championships. The young team had huge wins in the dual meet season against Penn Charter and Notre Dame. The team currently has 17 Top 50 times in the state rankings, including diving. The team operated on the motto “leave no doubt” and “trust the process.” After countless meetings and preparation leading up to the Eastern Prep meet, EA trusted the process and left no doubt!

One of the top highlights for the season was the comeback win over Baldwin, where the girls erased a 19-point first half deficit. In the O’Hara Christmas Tournament, the team defeated Springfield High School, a team that finished in 1st place in the Central League.

The girls advanced to the quarterfinals of the PAISAA tournament, scoring a first-round win over The Hill School. Cocaptains Cara Harty and Raeleen KefferScharpf created an atmosphere of support and competitiveness that allowed the younger players to establish themselves as the season progressed.

Ice Hockey 8-3-1

(8-1-1 Inter-Ac League) The team enjoyed its most successful season in recent memory. After dominating during Inter-Ac play, the team made it to the tournament final, losing a close game to Germantown Academy.

Tremendous leadership by captains CJ Kelly, Dhruv Raman, and Jackie Miller resulted in a great team effort. Senior goalie Matt Lucey provided a critical edge in goal each game. For the first time in school history, two female players, Jackie Miller and Ainsley Shin, will continue their ice hockey careers in college.

Boys’ Squash 5-1

2nd Place, High School Nationals The highlight of the boys season was an upset win over rival Haverford at the High School National Tournament at Trinity College. EA entered the tournament seeded #3, behind #2 Haverford. Captain Tom Hogan battled to a 3-0 win in the semifinals to give EA an upset 4-3 victory.

The team battled a powerful Brunswick School in the finals, ending the season with an impressive 2nd at nationals. Tom Hogan was crowned the Inter-Ac MVP.

Six freshmen on the team brought a lot of fresh enthusiasm and tournament competitive experience to the team’s top nine players. The girls finished 6th at High School Nationals. Captains Caroline Burt and Anna Lee provided strong leadership to a young team that is already looking forward to next season.

Brianna Bellinghieri ’22 won the 3000m at Delcos. Kathryn Lynn ’22 placed 2nd. The 4x800 relay placed an impressive 8th at States, shattering the EA school record.

Boys’ Winter Track The season was filled with multiple medals and ribbons for the boys’ team during eight weekend meets.

The successes started early when the 4 x 200 Relay (CJ Jones ’22, Josh Levinson ’23, Bryce Cooper ’23, and Aiden Chavis ’21) placed 2nd at the first meet at Lehigh University. By season’s end, there were two state qualifiers, five individual, and two team qualifiers for the Meet of Champions.

Sophomore Bryce Cooper won the 400m and placed 6th in States. He was the first male EA sprinter to qualify for the state meet in 30 years. He holds the EA record in the 200 and 400m.

Pole Vaulter Peter Lim ’21 set a new school record (14’ 0”) and qualified for Meet of the Champions (he was unable to compete because he was playing in High School Nationals with the squash team).

Wrestling 17-8

(3-2 Inter-Ac League)

Girls’ Winter Track The track team took advantage of the unusually warm winter temperatures, training for part of the season outside.

Combined with indoor training, the hard work paid off. Senior co-captain Devon Whitaker broke the school record in the 600m and 800m, and

The wrestling team exceeded all expectations with big league wins over Springside Chestnut Hill, Penn Charter, and The Haverford School. The team finished 3rd in a very competitive Inter-Ac League. The team also had a dramatic come-from-behind win against The Hill school to place third at the PAISAA duals. EA wrestled a challenging schedule, mixing in several dual meet tournaments, to gain mat experience for the young team members and provide opportunities to reach individual accomplishments.

Co-captain Paul McLaughlin ’20 earned a 2nd place medal at Prep Slam, 10 wrestlers placed at the PAISWT tournament, and seven wrestlers qualified for National Preps.

INTER-AC UNITES FOR LOVE OF DANCE Dancers from local schools joined together for the third annual Inter-Ac Dance Festival this February.

Held in The Carrafiell Family Theater, the Inter-Ac Dance Festival gave space for dancers to perform, connect, and work on their craft.

This year, Philadelphia-based professional dancer Alexa Santy conducted a vibrant, high-energy master class with the attendees. Santy explored street jazz, a style of dance that stems from modern-day jazz, hip hop, breakdancing, funk, and electronic dance.

“Picking up choreography in a workshop setting is a unique skill for dancers,” explained EA Dance Director Cara Lavallee, who coordinated the event.

“A master class provides the opportunity for dancers to experience this kind of environment as well as take a risk and try a dance style they may not be familiar with. Working with guest artists is great preparation for dancers looking to audition for shows, summer programs, or even college.”

In total, 65 dancers from Academy of Notre Dame, Villa Maria Academy, William Penn Charter, and Episcopal were in attendance.

DRAMAS CAPTIVATE AUDIENCES THIS FALL From an emotional road trip across the United States to a grand-scale musical in the African Savannah, our Upper and Middle School stage productions transported audiences this fall.

The Upper School Domino Club’s October production of Walk Two Moons explored how children cope with loss and trauma. Based on the John Newbery Medal-winning young adult novel by Sharon Creech, Walk Two Moons is a story within a story that follows 13-yearold Sal, who embarks on a road trip with her grandparents to connect with the mother who had abandoned her. During the family’s journey, Sal recounts a similar journey she had taken with her friend Phoebe.

However, it is only through telling Phoebe’s story that Sal truly understands why her mother left.

In November, the Harlequin Club transported audiences to Pride Rock as they presented The Lion King, Jr. This school-friendly version of Disney’s one-of-a-kind musical featured the beloved characters and iconic musical performances that have captivated audiences around the world. Check out a stunning visual from this grand-scale production on the next page!

GALLERY CELEBRATES GUATEMALAN CULTURE THROUGH TEXTILES This fall, EA’s World Language and Visual Arts departments collaborated with the Friends of the Ixchel Museum to present a vibrant Crawford Campus Center Gallery show that blended culture, history, and art.

En Sus Telas (In Their Cloth) celebrated the artistry of the Guatemalan weaving tradition, as well as the rich culture and creativity of the weavers themselves. Gallery visitors were invited to explore historic pieces, such as the traditional Mayan blouse (huipil) made with the backstrap loom, as well as pieces that show the modernization of textile design in Guatemala.

At the artists’ reception, guests were treated to traditional music, food, and even live weaving demonstrations from professional weavers who have mastered traditional techniques.

En Sus Telas was curated by Shannon Davis. Shannon and her husband, Chase (aunt and uncle of Pepper Claytor ‘23 and Ash ‘33), and Carlos Nottebohm (parent of Nicholas Nottebohm ‘04) serve on the board of the Friends of the Ixchel Museum.

Friends of the Ixchel Museum is a charitable foundation that promotes interest in the Mayan textile tradition of Guatemala and the work of the Museo Ixchel. It aims to contribute to the understanding, preservation, and protection of this important cultural legacy.

Ralph Earle II, United States Ambassador and a key architect of several major international arms control accords, died peacefully on January 13, 2020 from complications from Parkinson’s.

Don Cooper is living 40 miles south of Tucson, Arizona. He shared, “I play a little (bad) golf and do some genteel hiking. Spent three weeks in France in September. For a Christmas adventure my wife, Paula, and I and another couple took the Amtrak overnight to New Orleans. Three to four days later, all manifested respiratory illness. On the return home, three of us developed pneumonia. I was hospitalized for seven days, am home and just off oxygen, slowly recovering, so my normal activities are quite curtailed.

A memorable holiday season. Despite all, I continue to enjoy life here, just 20 miles north of the Mexican border.

Future plans include a return to southern France (Provence) for 10 days next July.”

Price Heppe says he has stayed in the Philadelphia area since graduation. He will be heading to Maine with his wife, 44

Jim Francis reports that he is healthy and living in a very nice cottage community in Warminster, Pennsylvania. He exercises four times a week and remains an avid golfer. His wife, Alma, passed away four-and-a-half years ago and two years ago he sold his house and moved to his current home. He has four children, 13 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, all in the Philadelphia area! A prolific family! He reports that he keeps busy by working 12 hours a week in the ER at the local hospital, trades stocks and options to make money and keep his brain in shape, and has season tickets to the Eagles and Phillies. Our boy is busy!

Kirk Hall indicates that his Parkinson’s disease is slowing him down. They did not take any trips last year but are planning to go to France this summer to visit his old sailing friends and have a family reunion. While there, they will be cheering on his oldest son, Cameron, who likes to run ultramarathons, as he runs 106 miles around Mont Blanc. Google UTMB to find out more.

Craig Moleski and his wife, Carol, are living in a senior housing condo in Minnesota and enjoying it. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June with their family around them: four children, 10 grandchildren, and two great granddaughters. He lost his brother, Walter Moleski ’54, in December which was tough—they were very close.

Harrison Owen left us after the II Form. He is married, has five children, and seven grandchildren.

After college, becoming an ordained Episcopalian priest, and knocking around a bit in health care and as a political appointee in the Carter administration, Harrison started to make his way as a consultant and developed a technique called Open Space Technology (OST). Since then, OST has taken on a life of its own. It involves the power of selforganization—think army ants or an unstructured marketplace—it works!

Lynn Trainer, aka Franklin, reports that he is living in South Carolina, overlooking a lake and has moose peering into the window at the back of his house. (Well, not really moose.)

They have three children and two grandchildren.

John Currie attended MIT and graduated as a civil engineer. He worked in that field for a number of years and eventually wound up back at MIT in finance, where he reestablished his friendship with George Ramonat. He retired as director of finance. He is married to Judy, and they have three children and five grandchildren who all live within 100 miles of them in eastern Massachusetts. They have an RV and have travelled coast to coast five or six times, always by a different route.

Bruce Watson A correction: In the last edition of Connections, we reported that it was his first daughter who got married. Actually, it was his first granddaughter who got married. Good for her. Now look forward to great grandchildren!

They can share his new found love of chocolate. And, finally, his 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee has 190 thousand miles on it, is doing fine, and suits his needs admirably. Imagine, in 1953 a car going that long! Wouldn’t happen in ’53. That’s progress.

Class Notes

Bill Hoffman left us after the 8th grade. After graduating from Penn with a degree in music, he bought a retail store (he is still trying to figure that one out) in Haverford, called Joseph Keefe. To that he added a summer shop in Rehoboth Beach, called The Winding Beam.

He and his wife have three children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He retired after 30 years and moved to Maine where he now lives. His wife was the principal of a school there, and he drove a school bus for the next 11 years.

Along the way, he purchased a piece of land in St. John, USVI, and built a small house. He is enjoying his many blessings and his good health.

Don Pillsbury, your dubious scribe, had two lens implants in January (yeah), Sue’s Model A Ford, Emily, was used in a movie in Newport, Rhode Island about a local bootlegger (fascinating), and I passed the test for a Ham radio license. This one is for low power UHF and VHF communications. I am going to sit for the next level which is high power on the shortwave band. Still haven’t figured out what I am going to do with it yet, but I was pleased to see that the old brain still worked. I figured out that I hadn’t taken an exam for over half a century!

Lynne Graburn tells us that, after a couple of detours concerning college, he got his diploma while working nights as a machinist at the Wayne Iron Works. Two years later, he found his calling as a City Planner and finished up in New York.

He met Dreer, nee Havens, his late wife, when she was head nurse at the Pennsylvania Hospital. She was a Baldwin girl who had four brothers that attended EA. Lately, he resumed curling after a long absence and discovered (surprise!) he is getting older. He is getting back into the swing of it.

DONALD “SKIP” SYKES JR.,’55 (1937–2019): A LIFE OF PURPOSE, FAITH AND INTEGRITY Classmates remember Skip Sykes, who passed away in November, for exemplifying the Stripes through every stage of his life. A “Lifer” at EA, Skip served on the Student Council, was the associate editor of the Scholium, and was a standout on the soccer field. The 1955 Tabula describes Skip as respected, conscientious, fun-loving, and a benefit to his class and friends. His academic and athletic successes continued well beyond Episcopal; first, at Amherst College where he was recognized as an All-American soccer player in the fall of 1958, his senior year. Upon graduation, Skip returned to EA to teach and coach varsity soccer, leading the soccer team to several Inter-Ac Championships. He then studied at The University of Pennsylvania, completing his master’s thesis on a study of Episcopal during Greville Haslam’s tenure as headmaster.

Classmate Dick Bond shared, “I knew Skip from our EA days, and we then roomed together for our four years at Amherst. To me, Skip was simply a special, caring friend and wonderful human being.” It was his character and positivity that his classmates remember so well. From his years in education, teaching and coaching—at St. George’s School, Newport, RI, where he also became their dean of students; at St. Edmund’s Academy where he was the head of school for five years; and then was the head of school at Rumson Country Day—it is clear he impacted many lives. Skip’s legacy lives on at Episcopal today through students who, in Mind, Body, and Spirit lead lives of purpose, faith, and integrity, and embody the motto of Esse Quam Videri, as he did.

Ginger and Geoff Worden recently traveled to Antarctica on the National Geographic Explorer.

They took part in an expedition through “National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions,” which gave them an experience of a lifetime.

They swam in very cold water and explored the environment in a truly exciting way. This photo was taken by fellow passengers who were toting substantial cameras and many lenses. Ginger and Geoff Worden are also the recipients of Outward Bound’s 2019 Kurt Hahn Award.

Rick Berlin shared that 2019 was not an easy year after a long search for a new home, a hernia, and being laid off of the job he has held for 31 years. But, he also shared some new reasons to celebrate: “My band’s new record, Great Big House, is the best of all five that The Nickel & Dime Band has made so far. I’ve also cut 10 videos for the record. Of course, it will get no traction in the biz, but I’m super proud of it, and the band itself has never been better live. There’s also going to be an hour and a half of my videos about Jamaica Plain shown here on March 7 and I’ve sold about 1,000 copies of my book, The Paragraphs, as well as performing the read a chapter/ play a song idea in Provincetown last summer. ‘Best of all I’ve ever witnessed’ claimed the producer of the show. Woo hoo. Liver and art go on. All in all, I’m a lucky guy.”

John Rosenberg is taking a semisabbatical this year with only one medical mission planned to the Philippines in the fall, his 18th trip there. He will also be taking a couple of vacations, first to South Africa for a safari and golf with old friends in June, and on a Road Scholar hiking trip to the Alps with his wife, Lynne, in September, and a session at Camp Avary in July. He writes, “Last year wore me out with too many difficult trips, too close together.

EDWARD H. VICK, JR. ‘62 VETERANS DAY CHAPEL Twenty alumni and friends of EA who have served in the military were welcomed to campus in November for the Edward H. Vick, Jr. ‘62 Veterans Day Chapel. This year’s speaker was Colonel David P. Casey ‘85.

Colonel Casey spoke about the United States’ long history of promoting democracies and keeping the peace around the world. That important work is made possible by our veterans, 50 million of whom have served since World War I. He went on, “The foundation that I developed here at EA has served me well, and it has helped me develop leaders. This year, I’m spending more time at home with the family and resting up, charging my batteries so next year I can get back to India and Tibet. Plans are already afoot and volunteers welcome. I hope to return to Philadelphia this year, probably in October. Hopefully, the Phillies will be in the playoffs for a change.”

Cathy and Warren Cooke continue to combine their hobbies of travel and photographing birds. Current plans consist of trips to Florida, New Mexico, Costa Rica, France, Ecuador, Moosehead Lake in Maine and Cape May, New Jersey. He shares, “I had a very enjoyable dinner with Frank Shanbacker after the EA Regional Alumni Reception in New York City.

I see Susan and Tom Zug frequently in Cape May. In April we will go to Vienna, Austria where our youngest daughter resides and is expecting her first child in early April (our fifth grandchild) who is guaranteed to be no less special than the first four.

He will continue to be involved with The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he is chair of the Quality and Patient Safety Committee of the Valley Medical Group and serves on the overarching Valley Hospital System Quality Committee. He continues to serve on the Board of Parlance Chamber Concerts, Inc., which brings some of the finest musicians in the world to Ridgewood.

After seeing Tom Zug, Eric Alessandroni, Kirk Woodbury, Goose Clement ’61, et al at EA, Bruce Smith wrote another book of poems, Spill, (University of Chicago Press) about his experience teaching at the Federal Penitentiary at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

Dave Bower, and his wife, Lynn, are kept busy with three grandchildren both in Naples, Florida and in Atlanta, Georgia. They are looking forward to a trip to Israel and Syria in late March. They attend St. Johns’ Episcopal Church in Naples, which takes Dave back to the good old days at EA. Three back surgeries have curtailed his boating, but there

is still so much to do in the great Florida weather. He is active in the local Rotary, where he helps to raise funds for college scholarships for deserving students.

Colin Hanna and his wife, Pricie, went to Scotland for a golf trip in May, took a two-week Viking River trip from Amsterdam to Budapest, and took their five-year-old grandson to Disney World in December.

Colin was elected to the Board of Governors at Radley Run Country Club in November.

Kevin Tremper has stepped down as the chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan, a position he held for the last 29 years. He will be working more in the operating room and conducting clinical research with junior faculty. He shares, “I am proud to say the department has the largest residency training program in the nation and has been number one in NIH funding for the past four years.

1971 CLASS AGENT: Tony Brown Christopher D’Angelo was the moderator for the program, Toxic Torts & Emerging Risks, jointly presented by the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and the International Association of Defense Counsel in London, U.K. in January. The panel, led by Mr. D’Angelo and consisting of leading lawyers from Europe and the U.S., focused on current litigation and regulatory patterns in respect of toxic torts and related risks and climate change litigation around the globe.

In addition, he recently wrote an article, Drone Usage, which appears in Modern Contractor Solutions Magazine, January 2020.

Meanwhile, he continues to manage environmental projects in California and enjoys swimming, diving, backpacking, and French. Kristine is a vice president for a health care strategy consulting firm in San Francisco and Boston. Sean is living in Manhattan, working in finance and sharing an apartment with colleagues and several longtime school friends.

The twins, Rhea and Ariana, are midway through 10th grade, excited about math, Mandarin, animation, and jazz band. Both have been active in competitive club and school soccer.

They journeyed to Paris, London, and Lyon this past summer to see the Women’s World Cup and scrimmage with European soccer clubs.

1976 CLASS AGENT: Rob McMenamin Stephen Chawaga has left the practice of corporate litigation and is now the executive director of Episcopal Legal Aid. ELA partners with area churches to hold legal clinics during meals, food pantries, and other activities they host.

Their mission is to bring pro bono civil legal services to low-income residents of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties in places they can easily reach. He shares, “Otherwise, Laurie and I are enjoying spending time with our daughter, who lives in town, and are celebrating the engagement of our older son and impending grandparenthood, courtesy of our younger son and his wife.”

Peter Halpert reports, “I was in London this summer and then spent August in the Highlands of Scotland.

This past fall we exhibited the work of Adam, Ames, and Andrew Bordwin following their showing at Kenyon College’s Museum – the Gund Gallery. My father celebrated his 87th birthday and my mother is coming up on her 90th. I’m chairman of the lecture program at The University Club of New York. I help run one of the squash programs at the Club but I’ve eased back on my tournament play. I’ll be in Vail, skiing, this March. In May, we open a new exhibition in NY featuring work by a young Austrian artist and we’re also opening an exhibition in Riga, Latvia, which is then slated to travel to Germany, Norway, and possibly the Czech Republic. I’m planning to go over to Europe when it opens at each of those venues, over the course of the next two years. I’m also making plans to be in Paris for Chr istmas and Vienna for New Year if anyone is going to be there then.

I stay in touch sporadically with an odd assortment of EA people – Ham Clark, Hon., Rob McMenamin, Carl Cole, Rod Wolfson, Susan & Jeremy Coote, and Adrian Brooks ’66.”

Andrew Waxler, MD, FACC, has been awarded the 2019 ACC’s Excellence in Advocacy Award for Grassroots by the American College of Cardiology in honor of his contributions to the cardiovascular profession. In November, Andrew was recognized for his achievements during the ACC’s 2019 Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. He currently leads the ACC’s Pennsylvania Chapter as Governor.

Through his work with the Chapter, he has authored legislation, currently before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, that would streamline prior authorization, which is often required by health insurance companies for certain medical tests.

He has also played a leadership role in state efforts to reduce administrative burden in healthcare and to require CPR as a high school graduation requirement.

Dennis Siegler shares, “I somehow missed a meeting and found myself chairman of the board of the Hospital de la Familia Foundation, where we are running a hospital, child wellbeing center, and multiple educational projects in the Highlands of Guatemala near the Mexican border. This region is the secondpoorest region of the Western Hemisphere and we are in the area of immigration finding itself in the news daily. It is very exciting, but I feel like I need to clone myself for my other day job. Anybody interested in learning more, contact me anytime.”

Judge Marston is the 10th female to serve on the bench for the United States District Court in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, which is one of the original 13 courts established by the Judiciary Act of 1789. Pictured with Judge Marston are her husband, Greg Buzan, daughter, Reagan Buzan ’27, and son, Wyatt Buzan ’29.

1987 Nina Castro Owens is still living in New York City and is now a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Financial Services Advisory and absolutely loves it. Her husband, Jim, is the CEO of Cisive, which he has been growing rapidly via acquisition.

Their children, William, Celine, and Harrison, are all now in high school at the Horace Mann School. She shares that their experience brings back fond memories of EA. She shares, “It is hard to believe our twins, William and Celine, are juniors and almost off on their own adventures in college.”

Luckily, my third is with me in Australia for a few more years. I left private law firm practice after 18 years to start a consulting firm looking to establish assurance and rating systems for the mining industry.

It hasn’t taken off, so I have been doing projects including purchasing a nickel mine (DeepGreen Metals) in Brazil and working on the world’s first deep-sea mining project under the United Nations. We were profiled on 60 Minutes recently and have been growing quickly. My wife is starting work as a naturopath later this year as

In August, Lori Hood Sanders was promoted to chief environmental counsel of DuPont de Nemours, Inc., headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware. She is responsible for a team that counsels global internal clients on environmental, health, safety, and security issues, including state and federal regulatory enforcement matters.

Jen Miller welcomed her son, Brooks Campbell Miller, on Oct. 19, 2019.

Katie Kurz was thrilled to celebrate her marriage to Andrea Rubio with a dear friend, Doug MacBean, by her side. Katie and Andrea tied the knot at the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles in October; they continue to reside in Zurich, Switzerland.

MAURA MURPHY ’96 LECTURE Philadelphia Chef and Restaurateur Michael Solomonov delivered a powerful Chapel Talk during the Maura Murphy ‘96 Lecture this January. Maura Murphy’s friends and family members were in attendance to hear the inspiring words of the James Beard Award-winning chef, who spoke about his challenges with addiction. He shared how his brother’s death set in motion the most self-destructive period of his life and how the closest people in his life helped him find his way to 11 years of sobriety. Students were profoundly impacted by his story and the lesson he shared about the danger of drugs.

Dara Pettinelli Kapoor is the digital executive editor of Health magazine. EA HOSTS 2ND “WOMEN OF EA” PROGRAM Members of the EA community gathered in January to begin a meaningful and inspiring conversation on achieving goals and celebrating the accomplishments of others. The evening’s keynote speakers were Ashley Johnson ‘03, most recently an anchor and reporter for NBC 11 Alive in Atlanta, and Samantha Stetson P ‘24 ‘27, director of client council and industry trade relations at Facebook.

The keynote speakers offered a thought-provoking conversation on topics ranging from networking, finding one’s passion, mentorship, changing careers, pay equity, work-life integration, goal setting, and beyond.

Friends from the Class of 2007 also reunited in Florence, Italy in August to celebrate the wedding of Nicole Spagnola and Trey Unger. Caroline Waxler Levitt ‘89, writer and producer for Disney+, and The Honorable Christine Fizzano Cannon P ‘30 ‘30 ‘32, Pennsylvania appellate court judge, led a discussion for mid-career professionals. Margaux Viola ‘03, strategic growth manager at Compass, Ashley Eyre West ‘04, managing director at the Oxbridge Group, and Jackie BaileyRoss Moriniere ‘08, assistant director of employer relations at Swarthmore College, led a discussion for emerging professionals.

At the end of the evening, attendees spent time networking and departed with the promise of keeping in touch. After the event, Gianna Smith ’15 remarked, “The strength of the network that EA offers is truly unbelievable. It was especially wonderful seeing women empowering each other through encouragement, advice, and networking.”

Blake Shafer moved to Washington state to be a little closer to home. He is currently working for a non-profit enrolling low income, predominantly immigrant, families into federal, state, and municipally funded preschool and home-visit education.

In December, Jake Gavin proposed to Blair Che while visiting her family in Dalian, China. The two met while Jake was studying abroad in Japan as part of Penn State University Abington’s study abroad program in summer 2018. Jake currently serves in the Army Reserves, and is enrolled in graduate school at the Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C. They haven’t set a wedding date yet, but they plan to marry in the Philadelphia area.

The Class of 2009 celebrated their 10th Reunion over Thanksgiving Weekend. A crowd of 50 alumni and some guests enjoyed the beautiful space at Louie Louie (congrats to Sydney Grims, director of business development for Louie Louie and Fearless Restaurants). Faculty members Lee Billmyer, Hon. and Jim Farrell ‘82 joined the class to celebrate. The committee said: “We had classmates travel in from all over: California, Michigan, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, North Carolina, in addition to those local in Philly.

It’s clear how incredible our class is, and that despite distance and time, we all still have a blast together!”

Amanda Terzian just started her own interior design firm, Sparke Interiors, after five years in a junior designer role at local Main Line firms.

Currently living in West Chester with her fiancée and their two dogs, she is planning a wedding for next August. “I am so excited for this new chapter of creativity, growth, and entrepreneurship. If any EA alumni need a designer’s eye, please give me a shout. I would love to help,” she shares.

2008

The Class of 2014 kept busy with 5th Reunion celebrations in November 2019. First, a group of classmates ran during Philadelphia Marathon Weekend. Then, more than 60 classmates reunited at Frankford Hall. With 36% of the class donating to support scholarship and financial aid in honor of Paul Pratt and Evie O’Brian, the class set a record for giving for a 5th reunion class! We’re thankful for their philanthropy that will support current and future EA students. Thank you to the committee members who made it all possible: Emma Brumbaugh, Brendan DeVoue, Matt Ernst, Taryn Gallagher, Victoria Johnson, Jack Keffer, Lo-Lo Lomax, Connor Martin, Meredith McCarthy, Deirdre Meaney, and Richie Palazzese.

Kayla Coleman starred as Little Red Riding Hood in the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival production of Into The Woods, directed by Jenn Thompson, this past summer and fall. “The production gained lots of attention and rave reviews, former Secretary Hillary and President Bill Clinton even attended one of our performances,” she shares.

COLLEGE ALUMNI RETURN FOR HOLIDAY BRUNCH This year, the Office of Alumni Engagement hosted EA’s college-aged alumni, who were home for winter break, for a special holiday brunch following a beloved tradition, Scrooge Chapel. Nearly half of EA alumni from the classes of 2016 through 2019 gathered in the newly-renovated Tierney Dining Hall and enjoyed catching up with classmates and faculty. Alumni who were unable to make it could watch the performance via live stream on the new alumni Instagram (@eaAlumni1785). This year, audiences near and far were pleasantly surprised to see John Powell ‘70, who retired in 2016 and returned to reprise his decade-long Ebenezer Scrooge role.

2016 CLASS AGENTS: Sarah Baturka & Charlie Jordan Three alumni were again playing one another on the field. Courtnie Williamson and Ali Rushton ‘15 of the University of North Carolina competed against Princeton’s Maddie Bacskai in the field hockey national championships.

Drew Hopkins was recently featured in Bucknell University’s alumni magazine for his work in theater tech and lighting. He shares that he

discovered his love for theatre tech and lighting during his time at EA. He is currently the lighting designer for Bucknell’s dance, theatre, and music shows.

2017 CLASS AGENTS: Nikki Cannon, Kelly Flynn, & Sarah Keffer Tyler Manion reports that he has made the Dean’s List in the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University, where he is the president of Cronkite Sports (the club affiliated with the Cronkite School of Journalism and Communication, which focuses on coverage of all the ASU sports teams). Tyler has been a reporter covering football, men’s basketball, women’s gymnastics, and the national championship women’s triathlon. This summer, he will be interning at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. You can see him every Monday night as a co-anchor with Cronkite News, the PBS outlet for the state of Arizona.

Corinne Zanolli earned AllConference and All-Academic Honors and was named Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. She currently leads the nation in goals and points for Division I and broke the Stanford record for goals in a season.

Ryan Schiller recently launched Librex, a mobile app that lets Yale students anonymously discuss campus culture with their peers, while collecting as little data as possible. The app, which is available on iOS, launched in September and is slowly spreading across campus. ‘’We built an anonymous app because people on campus, particularly international students, have felt that they couldn’t express how they actually felt to their friends or in classes because they were worried about how they would be judged,” Schiller shares. “We want to invite people back into the community, rather than having them feel alienated.”

Anaya Cherry will be interning at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

2019 CLASS AGENTS: Parisa Afsharian, McKee Bond, Scottie Crockett, & Brooke Kraftson DeeWil Barlee, a freshman running back at Villanova, had a great rookie season. He was named to the FCS: HERO Sports Freshman All-American Team for 2019 - Honorable Mention.

AJ Marcucci was named the nation’s top Division III soccer goalie for the second consecutive year. He is also the only goalie to be named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America First Team. During his three seasons playing at Connecticut College, AJ has an impressive 25 shutouts. He ended the 2019 season with an .859 save percentage and eight clean sheets.

This year, Connecticut College men’s soccer made it to the Elite 8 round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Reverend James R. Squire recently published The Times Of My Life, which can be purchased on Amazon. Rev. Squire’s memoir provides us with the story of his life; a trove of lessons learned from 45 years as priest, counselor, and teacher; and an opportunity to reflect on the reader’s own life. While writing the book and reflecting on the counseling relationships he had with students, Rev. Squire realized that his approach to counseling was unique and could help others. As a result, he has published helpful materials on his new website, revsquirecounseling.com.

Archives The Free School Episcopal Academy’s tradition of offering tuition assistance to students dates back to our early days. Public education did not become available in Pennsylvania until 1834, so schools like ours were the only opportunity for most children to achieve an education.

A few key milestones paved the way toward our legacy of delivering an exceptional education to talented and deserving students.

1785 The fourth article of the Fundamental Laws stated, “a convenient number of youth shall be taught gratis, as soon as the funds shall appear to afford it; in the meantime, it shall be kept in view, as an object of this institution.”

1814 By 1814, Episcopal had received more than $14,000 (equivalent to $200K+ today) to support its Free School Fund. The most significant gifts came from bequests, like the sizable estate left in the will of John Keble, who died in 1807.

1846 Under The Right Reverend Alonzo Potter, Episcopal was reconstituted as a Classical Academy for the third time in 1846. Following years of continued debate on whether to be a Classical Academy or a Free Academy, the trustees compromised and agreed to admit three free students for every five paying students.

1789 Bishop William White personally paid tuition for several students. A bequest from former trustee Andrew Doz, Esq. helped Episcopal open a Free School for 80 boys (and a separate school for 40 girls) in 1789.

1828 Due to periods of debt and resurgence, Episcopal was reinstated as a Classical Academy in 1816 and then a Free School again in 1828.

A student roll from the late 1820s lists students’ parents as laborers, weavers, shoemakers, carpenters, and seamstresses. Historical records show that some of these trades did not often earn a living wage.

1891 Primarily made possible by the bequests from the early years, the Free School fund generated between $500 and $700 to pay the tuition for free scholars during this time.

In honor of Black History Month, the Honors 2-D Design III Class celebrated the art and music of the Harlem Renaissance in their February installation in the Crawford Campus Center Gallery. The students researched the cultural movement, the fashion, literature, and art of the 20s and 30s, and listened to jazz as they painted their panels, which are black and white on one side, and painted using a palette from the period on the reverse.
