hmedabad, situated on the A banks of the Sabarmati River, is the largest city in the state of Gujarat. From the year 1960 to 1970, it served as the capital city of Gujarat. However, later, the capital was shifted to Gandhinagar city. It was founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah. It is for this reason that it is sometimes called the city of Ahmed Shah.

Ahmedabad is the center of trade and commerce in Gujarat. Apart from the commercial importance of Ahmedabad, it is an important tourist destination in India. Apart from being home to many important industries, Ahmedabad has many majestic monuments, which remind us of the great historical and cultural past of the city.

Ahmedabad was included in the Bombay Presidency during the British rule but remained the most important city in the Gujarat region. Over a period of time, Ahmedabad established itself as the textile industry and earned the nickname “Manchester of the East”. A growing center of higher education, information technology, and scientific industries, Ahmedabad remains one of the important cultural and commercial centers of Western India.

The History

The city was founded in 1411 to serve as the capital of the Sultanate of Gujarat, named by Sultan Ahmed Shah. Under British rule, a military cantonment was established and the city’s infrastructure was modernized and expanded. It was a part of the Bombay Presidency during British rule in India.

With the creation of the state of Gujarat in 1960, Ahmedabad gained prominence as the political and commercial capital of the state. In dusty roads and congested areas, the city is experiencing a major construction boom and population increase. A growing center of education, information technology, and scientific industries, Ahmedabad is the cultural and commercial center of Gujarat and part of Western India. Since 2000, the city has been transformed through the construction of skyscrapers, shopping malls, and multiplexes.

The city of Ahmedabad is known for its diverse culture. The people of Ahmedabad are very emotional in celebrating every festive occasion, be it Navratri, a nine nights festival, or a kite-flying festival. Ahmedabad is generally a great choice of food. The cuisine of Ahmedabad includes such tasty lip accessories that you will try to have more and more food every time you enter a restaurant.

Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, (Ahmedabad) is the world’s largest cricket stadium. The capacity of the audience in this new stadium is around 1.10 lakh. The cost of the project is at Rs 700 cr and it is built on about 63 acres of land. This Motera Stadium got inaugurated on 24 February 2020 by US President Donald Trump. The Sardar Patel Stadium or Motera Stadium), which was built in 1982 has redeveloped now. It is always been in the news as it is the world’s largest stadium. The foundation stone of Motera Stadium was laid in January 2018 and it is ready by February 2020. The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) handed over the stadium project to Larsen & Toubro (L&T), while it is designed by architecture firm M / s Populous. It is the same firm that designed Melbourne Stadium.

Sabarmati Ashram

This ashram spread over 36 acres on the banks of the Sabarmati river of Ahmedabad attracts people from all over the world. The Sabarmati Ashram is open 365 days, where people can visit anytime between 8:30 am and 7:30 pm. There are three important sites around this ashram. On one side is the huge holy Sabarmati River, on the other side is the crematorium ghat and on the third side is the prison. When Mahatma Gandhiji returned to India from Africa, he joined the Indian National Congress and wanted to live in Gujarat with his wife, for which he built the Satyagraha Ashram on 25 May 1915 in his Kochrab bungalow at the behest of his friend Jeevanlal Desai. Gandhi started living here with his wife and close relatives. It was good in terms of living, but it was not possible to do activities like farming, animal husbandry, construction of village industries there. He then re-established the Satyagraha Ashram on 17 June 1917 on a large area of about 36 acres on the banks of the Sabarmati River. Later this ashram came to be called Sabarmati Ashram by the name of the river. It is said that this ashram was built by engineer Charles Korea.

Constructed in the year 1411 A.D., during the reign of the Marathas, it was founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah, the founder of the city of Ahmedabad.
