DISCOVERY In the Lower School, a collaborative effort between classroom teachers and enrichment instructors fosters an environment of active learning, curiosity, and questioning. Students embark on a journey of discovery, exploration, and experimentation. Our small class sizes allow our faculty to forge deep bonds with each student, identifying their individual strengths and areas for continued growth. We prioritize the connection between academic achievement and social-emotional growth. This whole-child approach ensures that our students thrive not only academically but also develop the essential skills and resilience needed for lifelong success. joy & wonder ORTON-GILLINGHAM & SINGAPORE MATH

Teachers in Grades K–5 are trained in Orton-Gillingham, a systematic and explicit approach to teaching young students how to read and Singapore Math, a research-based approach that builds strong problem-solving skills and deep conceptual understanding.

ENRICHMENTS

Students in Grades K-5 engage in enrichment classes and interdisciplinary learning every year, including Art, Chinese, iLab, Library, Life Class, Music, P.E., Science, and Spanish.

RESPONSIVE CLASSROOM

Teachers implement Responsive Classroom practices, a student-centered, social and emotional learning approach to teaching and discipline.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

From the Grade 2 Poetry Slam to the Grade 5 STEAM Fair, students have opportunities each year to develop confidence and public speaking skills.

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Learning and exploration continue after 3 pm: after-school programs include dance, swim, chess, Lego club, and more. Aftercare is also available daily.

INTENTIONAL LUNCH TABLES

In Grades K–8, students are assigned to a lunch table each week with a different group of students and teachers to build community across classes and grades.

CURIOSITY The Middle School years represent a significant transition from childhood to adolescence. Striking an appropriate balance between nurture and challenge, our faculty help students develop key social, emotional, and academic skills. As leaders on the Red Gables Campus, students gain capacity and confidence by learning new ways to become responsible, contributing members of our community and beyond.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Our unique two-campus model provides Middle School students the valuable opportunity to serve as leaders of the K–8 program during a critical stage in their development.

DATA-DRIVEN INSIGHTS

Faculty use Mindprint and TrackMyProgress assessments to identify and develop each student’s unique strengths while delivering instruction to meet individual student needs.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Morning Tutorial, Supplemental Instruction Period (SIP), and afternoon Learning Lab provide students with dedicated independent reading time and an opportunity to seek extra help from teachers or gather in study groups.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Students are involved in educational programs designed to build confidence, relationships and gain new perspectives. These experiences include interdisciplinary projects, overnight trips in each grade, service learning, and opportunities for summer travel to bring learning to life.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS

After school, students can participate in athletics, theater productions, music ensembles, robotics, Model UN, Youth in Government, newspaper, and other activities and clubs.

ADVISORY & LIFE CLASS

Advisory Groups connect students with adult mentors who help foster a sense of belonging while Life Classes promote positive relationships, personal health, study skills, and time management.

GROWTH Ensworth’s High School program is designed to foster proficiency in Core Skills combined with broad content knowledge in the major disciplines and mastery in individual areas of interest.

HARKNESS METHOD

A core instructional approach at the High School is the Harkness Method where faculty lead students in collaborative discourse. Every student is expected to be an active participant in the discussion of ideas.

SIGNATURE PROGRAMMING

Grade 12 students may apply for the Capstone Program, an opportunity to engage in an extensive exploration of a passion or interest that is above and beyond traditional coursework.

4-YEAR COLLEGE COUNSELING

Our four-year college counseling model assigns Grade 9 students to a college counselor who will advise them throughout their Ensworth career and help them identify their best college fit.

INTENTIONAL SPACES

Faculty offices encircle student common areas, creating natural opportunities for students and faculty to interact outside the classroom.

ARTS ENSEMBLES

Performing arts ensembles are scheduled during the academic day, allowing students to have both robust arts and athletics experiences.

BALANCED APPROACH

Health and wellness is a priority; students attend fitness class each semester. The goal of the fitness program is to maximize every student’s physical abilities, while creating a love of a physically active lifestyle.

COMPUTATIONAL THINKING

Grade 9 students complete a Computational Thinking course to develop skills in algorithmic thinking and explores facets and ethics of modern computing.

STUDENT-LED CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

Students can participate in over 40 established clubs and organizations, mostly student-led.

Examples include Literary Magazine, Mock Trial, and Robotics.

WELLNESS From daily P.E. classes in the Lower School to a High School program focused on the fitness of each individual student, Ensworth emphasizes the importance of an active lifestyle, providing a solid foundation for a lifetime of health and wellness.

Participating in athletics helps our students to grow, learn, and challenge themselves while developing sportsmanship and leadership skills. We want all of our students to experience being on an athletic team and to learn how to become great teammates. Success in athletics is a by-product of our high expectations, consistent training, and excellent instruction.

Middle School teams compete in the Harpeth Valley Athletic Conference, with the majority of our students participating in at least one of 13 team sports. High School teams include 20 TSSAA-sanctioned sports, plus swimming & diving, ice hockey, mountain biking, and cheerleading.

SERVICE

K-1 2 S E R V I C E L E A R N I N G

Ensworth students are more than scholars, artists, and athletes; they are courageous and compassionate global citizens. Service Learning is part of our core curriculum throughout Grades K–12. As students experience the joy of impacting the world around them in meaningful ways, they develop empathy and discover their ability to make a positive difference.

GRADES K–8 Many Lower School traditions center around service, such as the Kindergarten coin collection for Habitat for Humanity and the Grade 4 partnership with HarrisHillman School. Service in the Middle School is completed on a grade-level basis in combination with classroom curriculum. Projects have included partnerships with Second Harvest and Abe’s Garden. Grade 8 has a designated Service Week where they dive deep into different issues affecting the Nashville community and partner with local non-profits that are addressing these issues.

GRADES 9–12 At the High School, students engage in Service Days where they spend an academic day serving community organizations such as hosting Special Olympics athletes on Frist Campus. As a graduation requirement, every senior is required to design, complete, and present insights about individual service projects. Some seniors elect to become Service Scholars by completing additional service hours and research, and then write a reflection essay and make a presentation to share more about their work.

Ensworth is intentional in building a strong sense of community where members feel known, valued, and supported. Within this joyful and inclusive environment, students have the freedom to take risks, discover new interests, and explore individual passions.

ORANGE AND BLACK COMPETITION Orange and Black are more than just Ensworth’s school colors; they are the basis of a long-standing spirited tradition that dates back to the early years of the school. Grades K–8 students are assigned to the Orange or Black team, and they participate in spirit activities throughout the year, culminating in the annual Field Day competition.

TIGER HOUSES In the High School, students are assigned to one of four Tiger Houses named after some of our guiding principles: Integrity, Morality, Truth, and Vitality. Each house elects two senior captains, who help create activities throughout the year, leading their team during Spirit Week and building school spirit within the student body.

CLASS TRIPS & RETREATS Class trips and retreats provide opportunities outside the classroom for students to bond with fellow students and faculty members. Through exposure to new environments and activities, students expand their horizons and challenge their perspectives. These shared experiences help grade levels apply lessons they are learning to real life.

CAMPUS ASSEMBLIES Students and faculty come together weekly for a campus assembly that features meaningful programming, including student speakers and performances, visiting authors and artists, and community engagement topics.

CONFIDENCE Ensworth’s unique, four-year College Counseling program helps students take full advantage of the many opportunities offered to them and successfully navigate the college search process.

Grounded in the philosophy of the student-centered, studentdriven search for the best fit, counselors help students identify how their strengths, talents, and priorities align with each of their college options.
