SUMMER SAFETY TIPS

By Connie Hogue, Vice President of Human Resources & Safety

Independence Day is a wonderful occasion for friends and family to come together and celebrate our freedom. Whether you attend a parade, host a cookout, go out on a boat, or plan to set off fireworks, keeping safety a top priority is essential.

Heat Safety

High temperatures can pose serious risks for everyone, particularly outdoor workers, children, seniors and pets. If you spend time outdoors, follow these guidelines to prevent heat-related illnesses.

  • Stay hydrated with water.

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

  • Use a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen every two hours.

  • Take breaks in the shade and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

  • Ensure pets have shade and water.

Grilling Safety

No summer celebration is complete without grilling your favorite foods. While grilling with natural gas or propane is convenient and efficient, it is crucial to follow specific safety measures before lighting the grill.

  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby

  • Inspect the grill for leaks.

  • Position the grill at least 10 feet away from structures.

  • Never leave it unattended and turn off gas after use.

If You Smell Gas:

  • Turn off the grill and gas (if safe).

  • Move away with family and pets.

  • From a safe location, call 911 if you suspect a significant gas leak, and then contact us at 740-344-2102.

Boating Safety Tips

As the temperatures rise and the boating season peaks, it is crucial to prioritize safety on the water. Before you set sail, review these vital tips to ensure every outing is both safe and enjoyable.

  • Always wear a life jacket.

  • Check weather conditions and share your float plan.

  • Keep a charged phone or marine radio handy.

  • Never boat under the influence.

  • Inspect equipment before use.

Fireworks

Fireworks are a highlight of summer celebrations, but they can be dangerous if not handled correctly. Each year, improper use results in thousands of injuries and fires. To ensure your safety and that of others, follow these important guidelines.

  • Keep fire extinguisher or water nearby.

  • Light one at a time and dispose of used ones safely.

  • Keep pets indoors to avoid distress.

Commit to being mindful, prepared and safe in every aspect of our lives this season.

From everyone at The Energy Cooperative, we wish you a safe and enjoyable summer.
