President’s Message

By Todd Ware, President & Chief Executive Officer As a company we continue to grow, expanding our services in areas that are also growing, such as Johnstown and New Albany. We now have over 67,600 members and serve 15 counties. We continue to empower you, our members, with services and products that make your workloads lighter, allow you to expand Todd Ware your businesses, and make your homes comfortable places in which to raise families and enjoy your friends.

New growth continued for our natural gas cooperative as we added 645 new residential members. During the year we added eighteen miles of new distribution pipe and replaced eleven miles of aging distribution pipe. The replacement of this aging infrastructure and our focus on leak repair has reduced our unaccounted-for gas to .63%, which is below industry standards. The natural gas cooperative has substantially completed its automated metering infrastructure (AMI) program, as less than 300 meters remain not on the program.

The electric division continued to focus on system reliability. Again in 2020 we spent over $9 million on capital improvement projects. Tick & Mosquito Born Illnesses

Check for Ticks 1. Check for ticks. After any potential exposure, you should check yourself and your children for ticks. Ticks like to hide under arms, in and around the ears, behind knees, and especially in a person's hair. It is also important to check your pets for ticks daily. Ticks are common in the insides of the ears, on the paws, and under collars.

2. Carefully examine clothes and gear for ticks.

Ticks can enter your home on clothing or gear then attach to a person later. If you find a tick, remove it before going indoors. Tumble dry affected clothes in a dyer for 10 minutes in extremely high heat after coming indoors.

3. Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors. Do this within two hours of exposure to ticks so you can find and remove them.

Stop Mosquitoes from hanging around 1. Empty standing water from flowerpots, buckets, barrels, tarps, pool covers, toys and wheelbarrows regularly.

2. Replace the water in bird baths weekly.

3. Check and clean clogged roof gutters at least twice annually so they drain properly.

4. Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with mosquito-eating fish.

5. Clean and chlorinate swimming pools.

6. Keep children's wading pools empty when they are not in use.

A few simple precautions can protect your family from tick and mosquito-borne illnesses during the warm summer months.

Annual Meeting

Streamed Live from The Midland Theatre This year’s annual meeting of members streamed live from The Midland Theatre on June 29th at 4pm. The cooperative partnered with The Midland Theatre to produce the event and record it for future viewing. Chairman Nelson Smith opened the business meeting. He introduced cooperative Directors before giving his chairman’s report. Smith shared news that our cooperative has finally achieved its long-term goal of 20% equity. This achievement allows the Board to begin developing a formula to return capital credits. Smith also discussed the Board’s desire to bring broadband to members in need. A full broadband deployment would cost $90 million.

At this time, the Board determined this is not a viable project without government grants. The cooperative took part in an FCC funding auction with hopes of starting this project.

Unfortunately, those efforts were not successful. The Board has not given up and will continue to pursue all grants and funding to bring broadband to our members.

Highlights from the CEO’s report are on pg. 3. Ware concluded his remarks by thanking cooperative employees, Directors, and members for their support throughout the year.

The Board’s attorney, Joe Boeckman, announced the results of the Director elections. Boeckman is a Partner in the BakerHostetler law firm.

Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles are picking up speed. More than 45,000 electric vehicles were sold in the U.S. in April of 2021, according to data from the Argonne National Laboratory.

This is a 350% increase from April 2020. Overall, more than 168,000 electric vehicles have been sold in the U.S. in 2021.

Charging an electric vehicle at home uses about the same amount of energy as an electric water heater. Taking a hot shower or charging your electric vehicle early in the morning or at night is hardly going to strain the grid!

In fact, electric vehicles can help the grid become more efficient. For example, charging your car overnight helps balance power demands, offsetting midday peaks.

Electric vehicle owners have multiple options for charging their vehicle at home. There are three common electric vehicle charging levels: level one, level two, and DC fast charge.

Electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly popular way for drivers to lower their fuel costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But the technology is new, and confusion can still get in the way of understanding these benefits. By sorting out fact from fiction, you can better weigh your options and decide if an electric vehicle is right for you.

Level one is the most basic charging level. If you choose this option, your electric vehicle will typically include an adapter that plugs into a typical 120-volt outlet. As electric vehicles continue to become more popular, you can expect to see more DC fast charge stations throughout Ohio.

It is a home-grown North American fuel which is highly efficient and its use by power plants contributes to cleaner air. Homeowners enjoy natural gas for its comfort and warmth.

Policymakers recognize its contribution to American energy independence.

Natural gas continues to be a popular transportation fuel. In the U.S., there are nearly 2,000 fueling stations and about 175,000 natural gas vehicles (NGVAmerica).

U.S. consumption of natural gas is forecast to average 82.9 Bcf/d in 2021, down 0.4% from 2020 (EIA).

The amount of gas-fired generating capacity over the next several years is expected to increase, although its share of total capacity will decrease due to the growth of non-hydro renewables (EIA).

Natural gas technologies also continue to improve, including lower-cost, high-efficiency appliances, gas heat pumps, small-scale generation, combined heat and power (CHP) systems and fueling facilities for natural gas vehicles.

The future supply of natural gas (reserves plus resources) exceeds 3,374 trillion cubic feet.

Treasurer's Report

By John Klauder, CCD, BL, District 7 Director For the year ended December 31, 2020, the Board of Directors engaged bhm cpa group, inc. to perform an audit of the cooperatives’ books and records. The bhm cpa group has extensive experience in auditing both utilities and cooperatives. On March 16, 2021, bhm issued the audit report for the year John Klauder ended December 31, 2020.

The audit report contained an unmodified opinion, which in accounting terms is a clean opinion from the auditor.

In 2020, total revenues for the cooperatives were approximately $108.5 million and patronage capital received from other cooperatives was $2.4 million. Total operating expenses for the year were $100.6 million of which $48.1 million was for purchased energy. The net margin for the consolidated group was $9.5 million for 2020.

Consolidated comprehensive income for 2020 was $10.5 million. Comprehensive income is calculated by adding net margin and unrealized gains/losses on post retirement benefits plans.

Comprehensive income by entity for 2020 are as follows: • Licking Rural Electric - $5,900,000 • National Gas & Oil - $4,500,000 • NGO Transmission - $780,000 • NGO Development – ($1,200,000) • NGO Propane - $520,000.

As of December 31, 2020, your cooperative had total assets of $310.5 million, which includes $245.9 million in net plant assets. The cooperatives invested $20.5 million in new plant assets in 2020. At the end of 2020, the company had $41.6 million of patronage capital in other cooperatives, including Buckeye Power and Cooperative Finance Corporation (CFC). Included in total assets was over $2.5 million in cash and short-term investments.

Total liabilities were $248.2 million as of year-end.

The cooperative has equity of $62.3 million as of the end of 2020. Equity for the combined entities has grown to 20.08 percent.

As of December 31, 2020, The Energy Cooperative serves approximately 67,600 members. During 2020, we paid out approximately $6.9 million in taxes and retired over $84,000 in patronage capital credits to estates. No Bake Goodness Cannoli Cones Yield 12 servings

Preparation time 20 minutes

Ingredients 1 1⁄4 cups mini chocolate chips (divided) 12 sugar cones 8 ounces whole-milk ricotta 8 ounces cream cheese (softened to room temperature) 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1⁄2 cup heavy cream 3⁄4 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions In a small, microwave-safe bowl that’s wide enough to dip the opening of a cone into, pour ½ cup of the mini chocolate chips. Microwave in 30-second increments, stirring after each time, until just melted. Dip each cone in melted chocolate. Stand the cones upright in tall drinking glasses to let the chocolate solidify.

If ricotta is watery, drain through cheesecloth, squeezing out excess liquid. In a large bowl with a mixer, beat cream cheese, ricotta, and vanilla extract. Gradually add heavy cream and beat until light and fluffy. Slowly incorporate powdered sugar and cinnamon until smooth.

Fold in ½ cup of mini chocolate chips. Transfer mixture into a piping bag and pipe into cones. Top with remaining mini chocolate chips.

Notes Per serving: 399 calories, 23 grams fat (14 grams saturated fat), 70 milligrams cholesterol, 225 milligrams sodium, 36 grams total carbohydrates, 0 grams fiber, 12 grams protein.

Attention Natural Gas Members In accordance with Federal Pipeline Safety Regulations 49 CFR, Part 192.16, The Energy Cooperative is required to inform members that the member shall be responsible for their gas service lines.

When digging near buried gas piping, the piping should be located in advance and the excavation done by hand. As a reminder, any time you are excavating, OHIO811 should be called by simply dialing 811 or 1-800-362-2764 at least 48 hours prior to digging. OHIO811 will notify various utility companies to locate utilities lines in the area.

What you need to know The member is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all gas piping from the gas meter to all gas appliances.

The member is responsible for the repair/replacement of the gas service line located on the member’s property from the buried curb valve to the inlet of the gas meter. Buried gas piping that is not maintained may be subject to the potential hazards of corrosion and leakage.

For your safety, all buried pipe should be periodically inspected for leaks. If the buried piping is metallic, it should also be periodically inspected for corrosion. If an unsafe condition is found, the gas piping will need to be promptly repaired.

Plumbing and heating contractors can assist in locating, inspecting, and repairing the member’s buried piping. The Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that a DOT-qualified plumbing contractor must be used to repair or replace a member’s buried piping upstream of the meter, including the gas riser attached to the meter set. While this is not required for piping downstream of the meter, The Energy Cooperative strongly recommends a DOT-qualified plumber be used for all buried gas piping.
