Catherine Szary ‘60 Elms Alumnae Gives Back

Nearly 40 years ago, Ms. Catherine M. Szary (Cathy) graduated from Our Lady of the Elms. Even though she graduated and moved on with her life, she never forgot her alma mater. Cathy always spoke highly of Our Lady of the Elms and enjoyed being a part of the Elms family. She also consistently made annual gifts to the Elms Fund for Excellence to support the Elms ongoing mission: Our Lady of the Elms, an independent, Catholic school rooted in the Dominican tradition, educates girls and young women to listen openly, evaluate wisely, speak bravely, lead justly, and serve compassionately. Cathy believed that “the school relies on philanthropy in order to advance academic excellence and that it was important to give back what little I could afford each time”. While nearly 75% of the Elms’ operational budget is covered by tuition, the additional 25% necessary for operational costs must be covered through generous donations. The operating budget pays for teachers’ salaries, classroom supplies, extracurricular activities, campus maintenance, and so many other costs associated with educating an Elms girl. Cathy liked the idea of a single-gender education because it helps to guide girls and young women to find their voice, while focusing on the many ways they learn and grow. It’s not just in the classroom. It’s the combination of the Elms community, the culture and the expectations that our school instills, that makes the education the Elms offers such a powerful and transformative experience. Over the years, Cathy’s generosity supported Our Lady of the Elms in many ways. She gave of her treasure by supporting the Elms Fund for Excellence. She gave of her time by volunteering or participating in events on Campus like the Blessing of the Animals with her dog, Skipper. Cathy recently passed away, yet she continues to passionately support Our Lady of the Elms efforts to educate future women leaders. Cathy made a generous planned gift, investing in the future of the Elms because she knew that students being educated at the Elms today will become the leaders of tomorrow. Each gift made to Our Lady of the Elms through the Elms Fund for Excellence or through Planned Gifts, provides unique opportunities for our students. We hope you will consider supporting Our Lady of the Elms with a planned gift. Your participation sustains the Elms experience throughout the year – and our traditions through all the years. For more information about supporting the Elms Fund for Excellence or to make a Planned Gift, please contact Julie Forgach, the Director of Institutional Advancement at 330.867.0751 or Jforgach@theelms.org. 20

Annual Report 2009-2010 Elms Fund for Excellence 2010-2011 Elms mission and support the unique educational experience that it provides. Your gift provides vital support to the immediate operating budget of Our Lady of the Elms and helps to ensure that many of the departments, programs and teams get the funds they need to provide a college preparatory experience of the highest quality while maintaining a balanced budget.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DISTINCT DIFFERENCE!

WHAT IS THE ELMS FUND FOR EXCELLENCE? The Elms Fund for Excellence, is the most popular way that alumnae, parents and friends support the school. The Elms Fund for Excellence directly supports the unique intellectual adventure at Our Lady of the Elms. Tuition covers about 71% of the cost of this education. The remaining 29% comes from generous donor support - including gifts from you. Gifts made to the Elms Fund for Excellence provide budget relieving support to some of the most important areas on campus including tuition assistance, academic support, athletic programs, student activities, and campus maintenance. Gifts to the Elms Fund for Excellence are expended in the same fiscal year in which they are received. All students, whether or not they receive financial aid, benefit from gifts made to the Elms Fund for Excellence by alumnae, parents and friends.

WHY SHOULD I GIVE / WHY IS THE ELMS FUND FOR EXCELLENCE SO IMPORTANT? Our Lady of the Elms School strives to be recognized as the center for academic excellence and women’s leadership in Northeast Ohio, and to be financially accessible to all qualified girls who desire the Elms experience. A gift to Our Lady of the Elms supports the continuation of academic excellence and the many girl-centered programs and initiatives that make us a premier educational institution and provider for our community. Making one or more gifts every year makes a statement to corporations and foundations that you believe in Our Lady of the 22

Philanthropy is a vital source of revenue. Your generosity allows Our Lady of the Elms to sustain and enhance our tradition of excellence in educating outstanding students. We invite you to invest in the Elms because it is only with ongoing and generous support that we can maintain our academic excellence. • Gifts to Our Lady of the Elms are investments that will reap extraordinary academic, athletic and societal dividends. • Every dollar you contribute to the Elms Fund for Excellence benefits each student attending Our Lady of the Elms. • You are helping to keep tuition lower in order for more families to send their child to a Dominican school. • Corporations and foundations look to the total percentage of donor participation in giving before choosing who they will support - 100% participation is best. We are proud to share that we have 100% participation from our Board Members, Faculty & Staff. • Your gift is tax-deductible. • You will be recognized in the Our Lady of the Elms Annual Report.

HOW DO I GIVE / HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE ELMS FUND FOR EXCELLENCE? Philanthropic support for Our Lady of the Elms includes contributions to our Elms Fund for Excellence, corporate and foundation Support, in-kind donations, dedicated volunteerism and special event donations. Annual Support: Your outright gift of cash is the simplest method of giving, and when unrestricted, allows the greatest flexibility to meet immediate priorities. Donations made to a specific program also make an invaluable impact. Corporate and Foundation Support: Supporting Our Lady of the Elms can help your corporation stand out in a highly competitive environment. Partnering with us creates an opportunity to involve your employees in a significant cause, raise funds through your business, and invite your consumers/suppliers to have an impact in their community.

WHAT IS OUR LADY OF THE ELMS FISCAL YEAR? Our Lady of the Elms fiscal year runs from July 1st through June 30th.

WHAT ARE THE TAX BENEFITS OF GIVING TO OUR LADY OF THE ELMS?

There are many opportunities for corporate partners of Our Lady of the Elms to be recognized for generously advancing academic excellence in our community. To discuss opportunities to make a distinct difference in our community, please call Institutional Advancement at 330.867.0751. Endowments: Endowments provide permanent, annual support of Our Lady of the Elms schools and are a wonderful way to honor a particular family member, friend or teacher, while establishing a permanent legacy and inspiring others. Honor and Memorial Gifts: By choosing to honor a friend, family member, cherished teacher, or to even commemorate a special milestone, you can make a meaningful and lasting contribution to our community of academic excellence. In-kind Support: In-kind donations are another great way for individuals and corporations to consider giving back. Matching Gifts: Many employers will match gifts made by their employees and retirees to non-profit organizations; some even offer more than a 1 to 1 match. To see if your company offers matching gifts or to get a matching gift form, please contact your company’s human resources department. By spending just a few short minutes filling out a simple form, you can often double the power of your gift. Planned Giving: However you and your professional advisor structure your planned gift, you will leave a legacy for future generations to experience an Elms education. Including Our Lady of the Elms in your estate planning can be as simple as naming the Elms as a beneficiary in your will, or as sophisticated as establishing a charitable gift annuity which would provide you with an income stream for life. To explore the tax-wise benefits of planned giving, call Institutional Advancement at 330.867.0751. Special Events: Sponsorship of and participation in special events are great ways to support the OLE mission. Visit our website to learn more about February Fantasy and other special events. Volunteerism: We don’t just need your treasure. We also need your time and talents. Volunteers are an integral part of the Elms family. Whether you are interested in supporting our students directly or supporting our staff “behind the scenes,” we may have an important role for you. To learn more about the volunteering opportunities with Our Lady of the Elms, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 330.834.3311.

All gifts to the Elms Fund for Excellence are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. Our Lady of the Elms is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization and issues gift receipts for each gift.

ELMS FUND RECOGNITION Each and every gift to the Elms Fund for Excellence is important regardless how large or small. Our Lady of the Elms relies on each benefactor to give because it will take 100% participation to raise the necessary funds each year. The Elms Society members make up the foundation of the Elms Fund for Excellence. All individuals, companies and foundations are invited to join as members by making a gift.

Information Technology @ the Elms By Dan McGee, Director of Technology

Technology in the 21st century has proven to be an essential tool in nearly every aspect of our lives. Just as the Elms meets the challenge of academic excellence in subject areas present in the school since its founding, new technologies have become mainstream in the world and the classroom. The ideas of 21st century skills relating to technology, creativity, and research are currently being firmly embedded in the academic fabric of our school. In terms of educational and administrative technology at the Elms, we have successfully remained ahead of other similar institutions. Our basic information technology infrastructure continues to be evaluated with the goal of exceptional education in mind. In late 2010, we were able to complete a seamless switchover of the Elms’ phone system, while adding phones to classrooms. This project will enable a cost savings to the School. Students in grades 9-12 were given Elms email accounts, and all students were provided with Elms-branded Google Docs accounts, furthering our focus on empowering and educating through technology. In looking to the future, a group of parents, students, and faculty recently came together to discuss feasibility of a One to One laptop program. The faculty at the Elms uses technology in engaging ways. Each classroom in the Elementary School is outfitted with a SmartBoard interactive whiteboard, while almost all the High School classrooms have SmartBoards. An Elementary School teacher is blogging with her students, teaching them how to collaborate online in today’s society with peers as well as experts in the field of science and technology. English and World Language classes in the High School use Moodle to take their class discussions online and address students’ multiple intelligences. Technology use at our school introduces a host of needs. Examples of current school technology needs include, replacing current computer hardware for students and teachers, software upgrades, SmartTables for the preschool, and keeping faculty and staff current on technology trends and developments. We function as an educational community with the goal of giving our students the tools needed to succeed in their future careers – some of which are not yet in existence. If you are interested in helping Our Lady of the Elms with any of our Technology needs, please contact Julie Forgach, Director of Institutional Advancement at 330.867.0751 or JForgach@TheElms.org.

Since the Elms Circle of Angels began in 2010, there are already four Angels who have donated to the fund. Through The Beck Family Foundation, Michael Beck and his daughter Kristin Clark Beck ’90, donated four years of full tuition for an incoming freshman who would not otherwise be able to attend the Elms. Both Ann Amer Brennan ‘51 and Ebony Miller Yeboah-Amankwah ’96 earned their wings by helping two incoming freshman for their four years at the Elms. You can also help change the life of a potential Elms girl in the Elementary, Middle or High School! If you are interested in joining our Circle of Angels, please go to www.theelms.org/angels or contact Julie Forgach, Director of Institutional Advancement at 330.867.0751 or Jforgach@TheElms.org.
