AC Moore Elementary School Principal Chantelle Baker has been named as the new principal for Leslie M. Stover Middle School to replace Mike Garity who retired. Baker has been a principal since 2005, having also served in that role at Chester Park Elementary School of the Arts. “Dr. Baker ties her love of the arts into her building, and it has proven successful,” said Kershaw County School District Superintendent Shane Robbins. “I am confident she will provide the leadership and energy to move Stover Middle School in a positive direction.” Baker started her educational career as a teacher at Harbison West Elementary School and has also served as an assistant principal at Sumter High School. Under leadership, AC Moore Elementary received national accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children and was an application finalist for Palmetto’s Finest. The school also received the Champions of Literacy Award and was awarded over $100,000 in Arts in Basic Curriculum grants and Distinguished Arts Program grants. Baker received a bachelor of arts degree in music and flute performance, a master of arts degree in teaching, a master of educational administration degree, an educational specialist degree in educational administration and a doctorate degree in educational administration all from the University of South Carolina. She is a board member of the South Carolina Arts Alliance and plays the flute in the University of South Carolina’s Palmetto Concert Band.
Central Carolina To Host Informational Event Online
Central Carolina Technical College is offering personal assistance to those planning to start college this fall. Titan SPARK! (Student Priority Advising and Registration Kickoff ) began in 2019 as an interactive, on-campus overview of the college for prospective students. With COVID-19 temporarily closing the college to the public, CCTC made the decision to move the event online. The online format allows SPARK to occur over multiple days at different times to accommodate diverse schedules. Titan SPARK! helps prospective students apply to CCTC for free and learn about financial aid options like Life scholarships, Lottery Tuition Assistance and veteran benefits. Plus, applicants will learn about more than 50 academic programs, meet with Admissions Counselors, learn about the college and receive help navigating the application process. Titan SPARK! is scheduled for July 2, July 9 and July 16. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to receive a meeting link. 'Love Forever True'
I did not want a cake or party any more. I think in your teen years you begin to discover who you are and dream about who you want to be. From The Chief ’s Desk...
Due to the Coronovirus and the Chief Justice’s ruling we have not been able to hold court now since March. I receive questions from victims and violators on a regular basis about their cases. Rest assured that the town Judges will begin trials as soon as we are allowed to hold court. Anyone involved in the Elgin judicial system will be notified as to the time and dates for their individual cases. The Elgin Police Department was fortunate to be able to assist the Kershaw County Sheriff ’s Office recently in apprehending some thieves who had been breaking into automobiles just outside the Town limits. The Deputies located the suspects in a car in a sub division which resulted in a pursuit. While assisting Kershaw County your Elgin PD Officer was able to deploy his stop sticks and thereby put an end to a possible dangerous pursuit. Kershaw County Deputies did an excellent job in pursuing and tracking down the suspects. Working together as we should definitely made a difference. Elgin P. D.’s K-9 Nala and handler, Officer Randy Bass continue to prove their value as just this weekend Nala hit on a vehicle after a legal
stop and after the Officer noticed the distinct smell of marijuana he deployed Nala. After Nala indicated on the vehicle Officers found heroin, syringes, possibly fentanyl, scales and other drug related paraphernalia all leading to an arrest and of course seizure of the drugs. Chief Harold Brown Your Officers, including Nala, continue to do their jobs regardless of the pandemic and will continue to do so. There has been and continues to be a lot of discussion about the wearing of masks when not able to social distance. I respect everyone’s choice on this matter but the way I personally look at it is if the folks encouraging the use of masks are incorrect then all I have done is wear one when I didn’t have to, no big deal. If the folks are right and I didn’t choose to wear one then the consequences could be dire. Just my personal opinion. Remember “Just be Kind” to each other and we can overcome anything including this pandemic.
Elgin Police Department Incident Reports
Fraud: Complainant/victim came to the Elgin PD and reported that she had been contacted by purported representatives of secret shoppers and was directed to deposit a check they had sent her in the amount of $2890 and then purchase gift cards from two different Walmarts. She was to then send them the gift cards for $400 each (6 of them) and she would make $450 for doing so. The victim did deposit the check which later came back as a forgery. She also purchased 6 gift cards for $400 each but had second thoughts and did not send them the cards or the numbers they requested. Animal Bite: On June 16, 2020 at approximately 1200 hours, Complainant came to the Elgin Police Department to report he and his dog were bitten by a dog at large. He told me the incident occurred on May 8, 2020, approximately five and a half weeks prior to making a report. He also told me he was walking his dog in front of the former Champs Barber shop, when a pit bull mix came from a Rose Street address. He said the pit bull bit him and his dog while he was attempting to separate them. He stated he went to his doctor for treatment of his bite and also took his dog to the veterinarian for his wounds. He said his dog began showing signs of an infection a month after the bite and currently had drain tubes around the cleaned wound site. He also said he went to the Subject's residence on Saturday for reimbursement of his dog's bills but was told they did not have any monies to help. Complainant completed a voluntary statement form and signed and received his copy of the Victim's Rights Form. Officer went to the Subject's residence and spoke to Subject. Officer told him a report was made in reference to his dog being at large and it is required to keep animals on their property or on a leash. Officer also told him due to the time difference of the incident date and time of report, no law enforcement actions would be taken at this time but a civil action from the complainant was a possibility. Subject told me Complainant walks his dog without a leash and I advised Subject I would address the dog at large issue with Complainant as well. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: Officer was patrolling the area of Main Street in the Town Limits of Elgin when a vehicle passed with no tag light. I made a traffic stop on the vehicle and spoke with the driver Subject. Right away, Officer could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and the rear passenger seemed very nervous. Officer asked Subject to exit the vehicle and speak with Officer and he did. Subject told me right away that his driver's license was suspended. Officer ran his name and date of birth through dispatch and they confirmed his driver's license was suspended for failure to pay the reinstatement fee. Officer then asked him about the smell of marijuana

coming from the car and Subject stated that they were at a hotel where some people were smoking marijuana. Officer then asked Subject about the rear passenger and Subject told me that Passenger was known to use drugs and didn't know if he had any on him. Officer then asked the rear passenger to exit the vehicle and he did. Officer asked if he had anything illegal in the car and he stated in his back pack, he had some empty syringes. Both subjects were patted down and searched. Officer then asked the front passenger (Subject's fiancée) to step out of the vehicle. Officer then deployed K-9 Nala to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle. Once K-9 Nala was deployed she indicated on the passenger side of the vehicle. Officer put Nala back in the vehicle and began to search the car. Officer found nothing illegal in the vehicle except in the bag that Passenger told me about. When Officer searched the bag, two sets of digital scales, empty syringes and a box of wax papers used to keep various types of narcotics in were found. Officer seized these items and asked Subject's fiancée to drive the vehicle being she had a valid driver's license. Officer issued Subject a warning for no tag light and a citation for DUS 2nd reinstatement fee. Officer also issued Passenger a citation for drug paraphernalia. Both subjects were given a pre-trial date of 07/16/2020 at 1400 hrs. I then cleared the scene. Once Officer arrived at the police department, syringes into the sharps container and the scales and papers were placed into evidence locker along with a chain of custody. Assisting Other Agency: On 06-18-2020, around 0330 am, Kershaw County Sheriff 's Office got a call in Stradford Plantation about three unknown suspicious subjects (2 B/M's and 1 W/M) walking around in the neighborhood. When KCSO arrived and saw a white in color Ford Escape traveling at a high rate of speed on Stradford Plantation Rd. The vehicle failed to stop for KCSO blue lights and siren. KCSO asked for EPD assistance. Officer arrived and witnessed the vehicle come out of Stradford Plantation and cross Whitepond Rd. and into Smithfield Rd. Officer was asked to use my Stopsticks at Whitepond and Smithfield Rd. KCSO pursued the vehicle down Smithfield and the vehicle came back out Whitepond Rd. where they ran over the stop sticks, damaging two tires. The vehicle then turned left onto Whitepond Rd. and came to a stop about 100 feet down the road. The three subjects then jumped out of the vehicle and ran back into Stradford Plantation. Officer held the perimeter until KCSO got enough Units on the scene. Officer was released and came back to town. Around 0510 am, KCSO called off the search for the three subjects, they were not able to locate them.

2020 Jake Watson Award
Each year the United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) honors an individual, group or organization with the Jake Watson Award. The Jake Watson Award is a celebration of leadership that gives recognition for exemplary volunteer service to a citizen of Kershaw County. This year, the 2020 winner of the Jake Watson Award is UWKC Board Member Steve Kimpton. Kimpton is a recently retired INVISTA plant manager who has served on the UWKC Board of Directors for several years. After Kimpton’s retirement in 2019, he dedicated much of his free time to volunteering with UWKC Mobile Nutrition Center (MNC) the New Day Men’s transitional shelter. On Friday June 5, 2020, Kimpton and his wife Katie joined UWKC staff for a farewell lunch since he and his wife would be relocating in the next few weeks. MNC Director, Kirk Mays, began the ceremony by recalling the last eight months and how much help he received from Kimpton stating that “Our organization has great staff but, it really is built on volunteers and as we look at what a role model volunteer is, I see Steve Kimpton.” Quentin Chavis, a pastor from one of the seven MNC sites, was present for the ceremony and thanked him for his service saying, “Your service has been very appre-
ciated, and you certainly will be missed.” UWKC President, Donny Supplee, stood to present the award to an emotional Kimpton. As Supplee began to explain the history of the Jake Watson Award it became abundantly clear to Kimpton that he was not just at a farewell lunch but at a small ceremony where he would be honored with the Jake Watson Award. Supplee referred to Kimpton as “a not so typical man, at a not so typical time” and further explained his meaning saying that “This is a man who while plant manager at INVISTA took the time to be a part of our United Way. This is a man who retired from INVISTA but not from us! At a time when we needed him most, he stepped up!” After receiving the award Kimpton began to say a few words. Kimpton, not realizing that his family had been watching the entire time was overcome with emotion. Kimpton introduced his children and grandchildren who were on the Zoom call and several board members congratulated him on the award. While the current state of the pandemic prevented the usual large event that comes along with the presentation of the Jake Watson Award it did not prevent UWKC being able to honor a deserving “not so typical” man.

– A “4th for Faith” Virtual Race will be held for COTA in honor of Faith Dixon, a Camden, child who needs a heart transplant. This virtual race event is planned for the week of July 4th. Registered runners can run 4 miles at their preferred location between July 1st and July 8th. 7-yearold Faith is listed for a heart transplant at MUSC. Funds are being raised in honor of Faith to assist with transplant-related expenses. Each runner who registers will get a “4th for Faith” T-shirt. Runners will submit their times online and place holders will have “virtual awards” emailed to them. The cost of this event will be $30 per runner. Runners can register to run 4 miles for Faith on the 4th at www.cotaforfaithsheart.com. Local volunteers are raising an estimated $40,000 for COTA in honor of Faith’s Heart to assist with transplant-related expenses throughout her lifetime.

'No Family Hungry' Food Giveaway Explore Camden With Audio Tour
NO FAMILY HUNGRY! This been the objective of FATHER’S HOUSE Ministries International and Blanketing Families Inc. all of the time, but particularly in this time of need and loss of what we consider normal school, work and daily life due to the COVID-19 crisis. We have been coordinating to give out food items along with United Way of Kershaw County, Radiate Church and Elgin’s Town Leadership, typically every other Wednesday at Town Hall on Main Street in Elgin, SC. Over the past few months we have gifted over 5,000 pounds of spaghetti pasta, over 1,700 gallons of canned spaghetti sauce, and 300 boxes
of fresh produce provided by the United Way to our community. We plan to continue this effort to ensure our local families continue to have a hardy meal as long as we are in this situation. Our number one goal is to help those in need in our community. Therefore, we welcome and encourage those in need to come to the food giveaways to receive needed food items. The Revival Center Northeast will continue Manna, its free food giveaway on Friday, June 26, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Sports Fun Camp
Who: Anyone ages 6 – 13 What: Fundamental baseball camp put on by the CHS Coaching Staff and Players When: Monday, June 22nd – Thursday, June 25th from 9:00 AM – Noon
Boys and girls can learn basic fundamentals of baseball, soccer, basketball and football in this day camp. But, will also play fun games such as kickball, volleyball, frisbee golf, table tennis, and horseshoes. Skill development, competition, team work and fun are the main objectives. Kayla Carraway, teacher at Wateree Elementary School, will instruct the campers. Snacks are provided but campers MUST bring a Bag Lunch.
Where: Woodward Park Cost: The cost is $75 per person (Checks payable to KCPR). There is a special rate of $10 off per Camper for two or more family members of the same immediate family. Campers will receive fundamental instruction in all phases of baseball. Each player will be drilled defensively on pitching, infield, and outfield play. Hitting will be stressed every day. There will also be instruction on bunting, base running, and sliding. The campers are to bring their own gloves, bats, helmets, and water bottles. Also, be sure that they are dressed properly with sweat pants or baseball pants for there will be scrimmages with potential for sliding. Drinks will only be sold during break time. Free T-shirts will be given to each camper as well.
"Beyond the Court" Basketball Camp
This Basketball Camp is offered for boys and girls ages 6 - 17. The camp will teach the fundamentals of basketball and the aspects of life "Beyond the Court". Emphasis will be placed on physical skills and techniques, proper training and conditioning, team sport, positive mental attitudes, healthy lifestyles and good sportsmanship as well as many other aspects. The camp is instructed by Camden High Varsity Boys Assistant Coach Sterling Council along with other standout basketball players. Space will be limited so make sure you sign up early! Summer Playground Program Boys and girls ages 5-11 are invited to participate in our summer playground program. The program includes games, crafts, outside activities, field trips and more. Free lunches are provided through United Way Summer Food Program each site. Registration will be begin on June1, 2020 to guarantee participation in the program (until maximum numbers are reached at each site- noted below.) On site registration WILL NOT BE accepted for any remaining spots @ each program site . You will have to go to the Recreation Department Main Office to register for any remaining spots. Technical Soccer Camp Technical Soccer Camp offers a fun & nurturing environment that is conducive to learning. On June 12, the Jackson High School Class of 1970 would have been celebrating their Golden Anniversary of 50 years. As organizers realized that they would be unable to gather, there was probably great disappointment. There is indeed so much rich history that we cannot let it go unrecognized even though we find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic that has caused us to be unable to gather in person to celebrate. It was 1969, the year following the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The African American community had been devastated to hear the news, and the entire world looked on in shock, for indeed America was at a crossroads. What would the future be like? Where would we, where could we go from here? Well, in a small town in South Carolina they were holding on to hope and marching into a future, the future, a part of the dream of which Dr. King had spoken of so passionately. They were pushing towards that reality. It would be in August of that year that Jackson High School would begin the last year of educating African American students. Segregation was coming to an end, and 208 students were entering their senior year to join the final graduating class of Jackson High School. That class of 1970 made history. It was a long time coming, but change had come. The school had humble beginnings as it begin as a small frame building in 1867—the second year following the end of the American Civil War—the year of the passage of the Reconstruction Act of 1867. For the first time Black people were gaining a voice in the political and social arena, and their hearts turned towards the education of their children for future generations. We are still on that battlefield, and there is still much work to be done. However, the progress made is celebrated by those pioneer graduates and others of the Jackson High School era. So here we are, the year 2020. We never imagined being in a place such as this—living under quarantine and social distancing. While we cannot gather to celebrate until a later date, we celebrate in spirit. Even though much has changed, much remains to be changed. America, once again, is at a crossroads. What will we do? In the spirit of “the Dream” of Dr. King; in the spirit of the citizens of Camden and Kershaw County who worked together to push forward to start a new era; in the spirit of those 208 students, some of which have departed this earthly life; in the spirit of those who fought bravely during the Civil War to gain the freedom of those who were enslaved; in the spirit of the crafters of the Reconstruction Act of 1867; and in the spirit of the countless Americans of all colors, creeds and faiths across this country, the world, and particularly here in Kershaw County, we continue to press forward for the change that we know will continue to break forth as we continue to seek our best together in unity. Jackson High School graduating Class of 1970 and all who have matriculated through its halls, you have been and continue to be a catalyst for change. On behalf of the Kershaw County School District Board of Trustees, we recognize your valued work and sacrifice, and we celebrate with you.

LFD Wins Drone Grant
Lugoff Fire Rescue (LFR) recently received notification of their successful grant application to Skydio, Inc.’s Emergency Response Program (ERP). The ERP is an initiative by Skydio, Inc. that sought to donate dozens of their Skydio 2 drones and equipment to public safety agencies across the country. LFR was selected to receive a free Skydio 2 pro kit, valued at $2,500, that includes the Skydio 2 drone with accessories. The Skydio 2 drone is built around the Skydio Autonomy Engine – the most advanced artificial intelligence system in the world. The drone is equipped with six cameras and it uses these cameras to make intelligent decisions to avoid obstacles. This allows pilots to deploy quickly and fly safely in all environments. The drone is designed and manufactured entirely in the United States in Redwood City, California. This drone will be the second drone in the LFR drone program used to assist with search and rescue, firefighting, law enforcement operations, fire investigations and more.
