Even in the midst of a pandemic, miracle and blessings continue to happen all around us, and this is especially so in the Elgin Community. For the 10th year we have had the honor and the pleasure to share the love of Christmas with those in need with the assistance of the Elgin Police Department Toys Roundup and Caring Hands Foundation. A foundation that began with a kind and generous gesture of Elgin’s former Chief Harold Brown and his bride, Mrs. Kathy. They decided one day to invite others to join in with the project and after a period of time, it grew to the point where their kind simple acts of kindness became a non-profit 501c3 organization with a Board of Directors and many volunteers.

Today their vision continues and because of the generosity and kindness of others, the EPD Toys Roundup is able to service families throughout Kershaw County. This year, under the leadership of Chief Alan Anders, we are currently servicing 106 families with 282 children and 45 senior citizens.

Behind the scenes, Elgin’s Town Clerk, Ansley Champe, has been working non-stop gathering and organizing the data needed from the families and providing it to our volunteer shoppers as they assist Santa with some of his responsibilities in Kershaw County.

Because of COVID-19, many of our normal fundraising events had to be canceled or changed in order to exercise caution and implement safety measures as we work around the virus. Even with the limitations and restrictions, our volunteers have continued to work around the obstacles to ensure that many boys and girls in Kershaw County have a special holiday season. We have worked around the

Local Family Seeks Support for Elgin Resident

Around Thanksgiving our family received the devastating news that Richard Ledee was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer and then on Tuesday December 8th we found out that the cancer has spread throughout his body. Richard has started his chemotherapy treatments and the impacts are starting to take effect.

Richard has lived in Elgin, SC for 32 years working at Brown’s Tire and Lube for the past five years. He has always had a generous heart and gladly helped his fellow neighbors whether it was working on their vehicles in his free time or utilizing his brick masonry experience with building projects.

Due to these recent developments our family has made the decision to move closer to help take care of Richard as he will not be able to continue Richard Ledee working. We have created a Go Fund Me “Richard Ledee Needs Our Help” to help out with any unforeseen financial impacts and to try and make the time he has left with less affected by financial obligations.

Even though we are not able to hold the “Tigers Take Time to Care” Event at Stover Middle School as in the past, our businesses, residents, volunteers and schools have jumped in and found new methods to collect items and get them to the foundation. One of our volunteers, Kim Stokes, has organized a parade that will take place on Monday, December 14th at Blaney Elementary School and Stover Middle School to pick up their donations. The parade will include Blaney Fire Department, Elgin Police Department, the Grinch and

Santa Claus. She has worked effortlessly to develop a successful event that would still allow the kids to participate. What a great way to demonstrate community service to our future leaders!

There is so much more that I could tell you about this organization, but honestly if it were not for our volunteers, our businesses, our residents, our schools, and our founding members, none of this would be possible. Even though Elgin is one of the smaller communities in the area, to me, it is the one that has the biggest heart!

Thank you to everyone who has assisted this year and to each and every one, I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas!

From the Chief 's Desk New Drone On The Way to Elgin PD

In this Chief ’s Desk I would like to advise the citizens of an important piece of equipment that we are purchasing. The Elgin Police Dept. will be adding a Drone to our toolbox. This will help us tremendously is locating missing and wanted individuals.

In the past, we have had several incidents where a Drone would have sped up the process, used less resources and kept Officers and the public safer. The Drone we have chosen has several safety features and a thermal camera. It will be purchased with seizure money and will not cost the tax payers. Officer Jordan Sanner has acquired his UAS pilot’s license and will be the sole operator. We are excited about utilizing a Drone to better serve our community.

Also, with Christmas in sight, I would like to update the community on our Toy Roundup efforts. This year with the help of our businesses, citizens and volunteers, we have helped over Chief Alan Anders 100 families and over 200 children.

This help comes in the form of charity events, cash donations, food donations, new toys and long hours. It is always hard work, but very well worth it in the end. EPD Toy Roundup will be raising money and taking donations throughout the 2021 year in preparation for next Christmas. So, keep an eye out for our future fund raisers and thank you.

KC Library Donates 1,000 Books Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

On Tuesday, December 8, KC Library Director Amy Schofield donated 1,000 books to KCSD students. Schofield says, "Providing books for this program continues the library's targeted response to the pandemic--- providing quality books for home libraries to families who are the most at risk. Since the summer we have been doing book giveaways using the book mobile in partnership with food distribution from Food for the Soul, United Way of Kershaw County Mobile Nutrition, and the School District. With this partnership, we are excited to provide high-interest, new books to families during the holidays.

Books are acquired through First Book Marketplace, a non-profit that offers deeply discounted new books, to organizations serving children in need."

The books were distributed to the Elgin Police Department Toy Roundup and Caring Hands Foundation/Stover Middle School's Tigers Take Time to Care holiday project, which helps KC families in need during the holidays; Blaney Elementary School, a recipient of a Little Free Library, a waterproof book-sharing box located in the front of the school and available for all students in the Elgin community. Students bring a book to the library to donate and take another book with them to read. The books donated to BES will keep the Little Free Library stocked with new books for students; and the Continuous Learning Center Library.

Prevent Stormwater Pollution: Do Not Dump Any Fats, Oils, and Greases Down the Drain

This holiday season may look a little different due to the on-going pandemic, but holiday cooking is a classic tradition that continues to be honored despite these unprecedented times. As we continue to carry out this tradition it is important that we incorporate safe practices for properly disposing fats, oil and grease as part of our kitchen clean up methods. Proper disposal of fats, oil and grease (also referred to as FOG) can help keep our waterways clean.

After preparing a holiday meal its often tempting to pour leftover grease and cooking oil down the kitchen sink but this holiday season we urge you to think twice. When you dump leftover down the drain, even if you run hot water down the sink to flush it through your pipes, grease still sticks to the inside of sewer pipes, both on your property and in the streets. As FOG cools these materials congeal and turn into solids, through time the grease builds up and can block an entire pipe. These sewer blockages can create overflows that back up raw sewage into your home, neighbor’s property, parks, streets or even contaminate nearby bodies of water. These blockages of sewer (the same problem can occur similarly with septic systems) can damage homes, threaten the environment, and cause major health hazards.

These blockages create financial burdens on the maintenance of the sewer collection systems and/ or treatment plants which in turn can lead to higher sewer rate for customers. Sewer backups can cost customers thousands of dollars to repair or replacement of their damaged properties or septic systems.

Fortunately, there is an easy solution to this problem and that is to try and prevent blockages by keeping FOG out of the drains in the first place.

Here are some disposal tips: • Small amounts of oil or grease (such as meat drippings): soak it up with paper towels and throw them in the trash.

• Cup to a pint of FOG: pour the grease or oil into a container and let it solidify before disposing of in the trash. One option is to freeze the FOG to speed up the solidification process.

• Moderate amounts (pint to a gallon): use cat litter or shredded newspaper to absorb and solidify the grease or oil. Put the cat litter in a double-lined plastic bag and pour the grease into the bag.

• Larger amounts of FOG (more than 1 gallon such as from frying a turkey, fried chicken or French fries): Kershaw County Convenience Centers collect used cooking oil. Look for the Midlands Biofuels Used Cooking Oil Bins at the Centers to properly dispose of your used cooking oil.

Stover Tigers 'Take Time To Care' For Elgin PD Toy Roundup

COVID19 has changed a lot of things for this school year, but not the spirit of giving for those participating in the Stover Middle School's Tigers Take Time to Care annual holiday project. Instead of the traditional assembly to present the gifts and donations, a drive through parade was held to collect the items on Monday, Dec. 14.

Blaney Fire Department trucks, along with Santa and the Grinch, and Elgin Police Department officers drove through Blaney Elementary School and Stover Middle School bus loops at 1 p.m. Dec. 14 to pick up toys and canned goods that the schools have collected. Students lined the sidewalks (socially distanced) to see the vehicles with Santa, the Grinch and all their collections, which directly benefit Kershaw County families in need.

Donations were given to the Elgin Police Department's Toy Roundup and Caring Hands Foundation.

Last year, over 100 Kershaw County families and 260 KCSD children benefited from the project. The South Carolina chapter of the National School Public Relations Association recognized the program with a Golden Achievement Award.

Murdic Bowen went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at the age of 98. He was born on July 20, 1922, in Blaney, South Carolina where he grew up. He was the son of the late Zack and Avie Branham Bowen. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Beulah Monroe Bowen. Murdic was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather to his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Surviving are his three daughters, Beverly Nates (Larry), of West Columbia, Glenda Morris (Mike, deceased), of Decatur, AL, and Lynn Nelson (Mike), of Elgin; six grandchildren, Gina Nates Henderson, Kristin Nates McGee, Kim Morris Gaines, Lisa Morris Dutton, Seth Nelson, Zack Nelson; ten great-grandchildren; three great, great-grandchildren; as well as a sister, Beatrice Branham Shirley. He was also preceded in death by seven brothers; and four sisters.

His Christian faith was an important part of his life. He lived and shared his faith during the many years he was blessed to live. Anyone that knew him knew he believed in the power of prayer and he instilled that in his children.

As an active member of Highway Pentecostal Holiness Church for over 70 years, he faithfully served his church in many capacities including deacon, Sunday school teacher, and other positions.

Over the years he worked in textiles, had a mercantile business and a December 16, 2020

used car business. His most enjoyment came later in life when he was buying and selling cars that he had refurbished for resale.

Murdic was a World War II Veteran. He was in the US Army and was sent to the European Theatre to serve in General Patton’s 3rd Army, HQ Co, 94th Div. in 1942. He was in combat in Germany and other countries until the war was over and received several medals for his service. He often spoke with pride of being chosen to chauffeur the Chief of Staff and other officials during the war, plus chauffeuring Bob Hope and Jerry Colonna as they entertained the troops.

In light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the funeral service for Mr. Bowen will be private. A livestream of the service may be seen by visiting the Facebook Live Page of Highway Pentecostal Holiness Church at 2 o’clock, Friday, December 11th. He will be laid to rest following the service and military honors beside his beloved wife, Beulah. For those who wish to pay their respects and sign the register, you may do so between the hours of 9 and 6 o’clock, Thursday, December, 10th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Highway Pentecostal Women’s Ministries or the Highway Pentecostal Missions Fund at 2290 Heath Pond Road, Elgin, SC 29045.

Bero Named 2020 Citizen of the Year

During the recent Tree Lighting festivities held at Potter Park, Pat Bero was announced as Elgin's 2020 Citizen of the Year.

Mr. Pat was nominated for his tireless efforts to help others in our community. Mr. Pat can be found at Elgin Town Hall every other Wednesday, as he works to support Blanketing Families, a nonprofit working to provide meals to those in need.

Mr. Pat serves our community despite the fact that he is fighting cancer himself.

During the bi-monthly food distribution by Blanketing Families, Mr. Pat coordinates the traffic, and even personally delivers food to those folks who are unable to come to Town Hall.

"He's always asking if we need anything, always checking on me," says Annette Hammond, founder of Blanketing Families. "Courage, love and always, always, giving," continues Annette.

"Mr. Pat’s nature defines our community. He has a true servant’s heart and is happiest when he is helping in one way or another in our community," says Elgin Mayor Melissa Emmons. "In the midst of a pandemic and while undergoing treatment for Cancer, he never missed an event as we distributed food to those in need. He has also worked effortlessly with the Toys Roundup and helps keep the Blessing Box stocked with nonperishable food items."

Sgt. Chris De Long received the 2020 Kershaw County Deputy Sheriff of the Year award at our recent KCSO Christmas party. We had more nominations this year than last year. Several deputies were nominated by our citizens for outstanding acts of courage, compassion, and community service. It is always a hard decision to make.

This year's award came down to consistency. Sgt. De Long has been consistent in his service to the citizens of Kershaw County for over 10 years. He truly understands our mission as peacekeepers and public servants. Sgt. De Long transmits our mission well to our younger deputies. He volunteers his

time to our KCSO Explorer (Cadet) program, our KCSO training staff, and is always willing to participate in any activity to improve the KCSO's community relations. Even when things don't go his way, he keeps his chin up and makes the best of it. Chris De Long is a great asset to your KCSO. KershawHealth Now Offering Monoclonal Antibody Treatment For Covid-19 Patients

KershawHealth announced today the hospital is offering bamlanivimab, a new monoclonal antibody therapy, for treatment of non-hospitalized patients with a mild or moderate case of COVID-19. Developed by pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, the drug recently received emergency use authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is now being allocated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control (DHEC) and other state agencies.

Monoclonal antibodies are laboratory-made proteins that mimic the immune system’s ability to fight off harmful viruses. Bamlanivimab is specifically designed to help block the SARS-CoV-2 virus and prevent the virus from further infecting healthy cells.

Administered intravenously, this innovative treatment is designed to help lessen the severity of COVID-19 in individuals who are COVID-19-positive and are at risk for developing a severe form of the disease.

Patients must meet specific clinical criteria including having a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19 that is mild or moderate; having underlying health conditions or > 65 years of age; and being stable enough not to require hospitalization. As bamlanivimab is an investigational treatment, the hospital’s supply is limited and carefully allocated by DHEC and requires an order from the patient’s provider.
