Boykin Christmas Parade

Excitement is building as Boykin lovers – old and new make plans to attend and participate in this year’s Boykin Christmas Parade on Sunday, December 17. This unique South Carolina holiday tradition draws thousands of spectators and participants from far and wide each year. The tiny hamlet, where the Boykin Spaniel was born and bred, has a population of less than 50, but that doesn’t include the family of dogs, horses, hogs, mules, sheep, chicks, turkeys, birds, and THE alligators - all of which will likely make appearance.

With as many as 70 “floats” (e.g. tractors, horses, pontoons, carriages, wagons, Jalopies, old farm equipment and other toting apparatus) and walking, marching, singing, swirling and dancing creatures, you’re sure to experience the holidays Boykin-style. Along with many surprises, the Queens will be floating by, too – the Fatback Queen, the Collards Queen and the Grits Queen – AND of course Santa Claus. According to Allie Belger, parade committee member, while the parade itself starts at 2 p.m., everyone should come early to make the most of the day. “The day includes lots of fun. Spectators are welcome to arrive as early as 8 a.m. on Sunday,” says Allie. “After finding a parking spot, we encourage spectators to set up, responsibly tailgate, take a stroll around Boykin and meet up with friends. We’ll have food vendors, town eateries, and the Annual Gospel sing-along with Union Baptist Church choir at the historic Swift Creek Church. There is something for everyone.”

Grounds will open at 8 a.m. on 12/17 for parking and the parade will start at 2 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to come early to beat the traffic. KC's FFA Earns National Recognition The WTC Kershaw County FFA Chapter housed at the Woolard Technology Center in Camden, South Carolina achieved 2 stars in the National Chapter Award Program. This program evaluates chapters in all 50 states and 2 U.S. Territories in the areas of Building Communities, Strengthening Agriculture & Growing Leaders.

The WTC Kershaw was selected as a Gold Chapter at the SC FFA State Convention in June 2022, signifying it as one of the 12 best chapters in the state of South Carolina. Following this, the application advanced to the National level with the opportunity to earn one, two, or three stars. Two stars indicate that in all categories, WTC Kershaw FFA is going above and beyond and excelled in all areas of their FFA Chapter and Agriculture Program. The FFA Chapter traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to receive this award and recognition for the achievement. The FFA members, advisors, and officers work so hard throughout the year and this award reflects the efforts made during the school and summer months. A big congratulations goes to the WTC Kershaw County FFA Chapter for this national accomplishment.

From The Chief 's Desk In this Chief ’s Desk, I would like to remind everyone about the 48th Annual Catfish Stomp Festival and Parade!

It will be on Saturday, December 2, 2023. Parade starts at 10am, be here and parked early to get a good spot, festival to follow at Potter Community Park. Elgin PD Incident Reports

Shoplifting: On 10-28-2023, Store Manager called 911 because of a shoplifter stealing and being loud and boisterous with him. Manager confronted the unknown white female at the counter about stealing something off of aisle two.

The unknown female stated she was not stealing anything and when she emptied her pockets she had a line trimmer cutter for cut string and a rotary bit that goes to a rotor (valued $11.95) in her pocket. After yelling and cursing at Manager she ran out the store without paying for the items.

Manager will have to inventory aisle two to see what else she took.

Telephone Calls - Obscene/Harassing: OFC Picciuolo arrived at 1310-A White Pond Rd. to investigate a series of harassing phone calls that shop employees have been getting. Employee stated that for approximately the last two months, they have been getting very odd phone calls by an unknown male. The male pretends to be a customer and then begins asking inappropriate questions, such as the girls' bra sizes. Employee stated that there was an individual who would come into the store nearly every day, prior to two months ago. He was "creepy" but the girls thought that he was relatively harmless. This man was identified as Subject, a late-forties aged white male who drives a large black pickup truck with a #83 and shamrock racing logo sticker, yellow in color. About the time that Subject stopped coming into the store, the phone calls started. OFC Picciuolo was provided with a recording of the caller's voice and a photo of the design logo from Subject's truck. These items are attached to this case file. Employee stated that she more or less wanted us to see what we could do to stop the calls from happening.

Civil Disturbance: On 11/09/2023, Officer Sgt. Delong was advised by Kershaw County Dispatch to call Victim in reference to possible harassment.

Upon making contact with Victim she advised while she was at 2507 Main St. (Circle K) to visit with her girlfriend who works at the store, employees from across the street at ENT began yelling at her. Victim stated that a unknown male walked November 17, 2023

across the street while she was sitting in her car and gave her a very intimidating look while a female yelled "call David". Victim then stated that the unknown male went into the store and began talking junk to her girlfriend while she was working. This incident stems from a previous shoplifting case between Victim and ENT Hardware.

Officer will follow up with employees at ENT in reference to this. Officer also asked Victim if her girlfriend needed to speak to law enforcement and she stated she was not sure but if so she would call when she got off work. Officer will get with management to see if he can get video from either store.

Vandalism of Property: OFC Picciuolo was dispatched to meet with Victim at EPD HQ concerning a vandalism that occurred to her vehicle.

This vandalism is in connection with a continuing harassment/stalking situation with her exboyfriend, Subject, who lives in Myrtle Beach but was in the Elgin area to have contact with Victim.

Subject was at Victim's residence this morning and blocked her from leaving her subdivision (Tall Pines). Victim did leave the area and Subject kept following her, eventually entering the jurisdiction of the Town of Elgin. While in Elgin's jurisdiction, Victim stopped at the stop sign on Cherry Ln. and Blaney Rd. Subject got out of his vehicle and punched the right rear quarter panel of Victim's car, causing a dent in the body of the vehicle.

KCSO DEP Chapman also responded and did a report on the harassment that occurred in Kershaw County.

Vandalism of Property - Egging: On 11/05/2023, I, Chief Anders was dispatched to Oakland Dr. in reference to vandalism. The Victim stated that a Juvenile egged his house. Victim caught the Juvenile in the act, in front yard. Victim saw which residence that the juvenile entered down the road.

Officers made contact with Juvenile at Oakland Dr. The Juvenile admitted to egging the house, his 23yoa sister was home. The Juvenile and sister walked back down to the other home Juvenile cleaned the eggs from the victim's home.

Local FFA Member Advances LES Pumpkin Carving Winner in National Competition

Member of the WTC Kershaw County FFA Chapter, Presley Millett traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to compete in the National Extemporaneous Public Speaking Competition. The National Extemporaneous Public Speaking LDE consisted of one winner from each state from across the nation.

45 students were competing this year in the preliminary round. After this round the contestants were cut back to 16 semi finalists to compete for the winning title. Our student Presley Millett was in this talented Presley Millet group of competitors. During this event, participants WTC FFA draw from 18 agricultural topics then select three of interest. From those three, a student selects the topic of their speech and has 30 minutes to prepare using five resources. Participants then present a four to six-minute speech on their topic to a panel of judges. After their speech, students answer five minutes worth of questions on the topic they just presented. This event challenges students to practice their presentation skills, articulation, and logical thinking and advocate for agriculture and agricultural education.

Presley earned the Silver Ranking in this event signifying her advancement as a national semi-finalist. This is a huge achievement for WTC Kershaw County FFA and the state of South Carolina. Students participating in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking Leadership Development Event showcase their agricultural knowledge and ability to think on their feet by giving a Lugoff Elementary held its 20th annual character pumpkin contest. LEHS Ladies Strength Team Heads to State

Recently, Coach Katie Ham and Coach Will Lucas took 12 female athletes to the state female strength meet. They all competed very well, and three ladies made the All-State team. Layla Lucas and Madison Brown placed 4th

Join Amy Kinard, director of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Kat Spadacenta, Main Street manager for the City of Camden, for their annual Shop Small tradition on “Plaid Friday” November 24 from 11 am to 1 pm, as they hand out Shop Small bags stuffed with goodies from local businesses to the first 150 people who arrive at Broad Street Park, at the corner of Broad and Rutledge Streets in Downtown Camden. “ Plaid Friday” is an alternative to the commonly known “Black Friday”, where independent business advocacy groups encourage their communities to leave behind the long lines waiting overnight in front of the big box store, and make shopping for friends and family a pleasurable activity once again. It is celebrated throughout the nation as part of the “Shop Indie Local” campaign.

Spadacenta said. “There might even be a special prize if we catch you wearing plaid!”

As in years past, Kinard and Spadacenta are pledging to spend a significant amount of their gift giving budgets this holiday season at businesses within Kershaw County, and this year they are challenging the community to do the same.

“Many of our small businesses rely heavily on holiday season spending here in Kershaw County, just like many small businesses across the nation,” Kinard said. “So we have pledged to spend our dollars locally whenever we can, and we want everyone to make the same pledge. There are so many businesses in Kershaw County that have gifts for everyone on your list.”

A recent survey by Constant Contact found that 75% of small businesses rely on the holiday season to meet their annual revenue goals. For those small businesses in the retail sector, over half reported that more than a quarter of their annual sales take place in the last weeks of the year.

LEHS JROTC KCSD Announces Staffing Changes Raider Team

Recently, the Lugoff-Elgin JROTC Raider team competed at the National Raider Challenge in Fort Knox, KY and won big! In the Male Division, the team achieved second place overall in the Nation!

They also took home: 4th place 5k Mountain Course 1st place Gauntlet 1st place Team Physical Fitness Challenge Team members include Aidan Taylor, Christoper Krause, Trenten Cardoza, Kyle Green, Trey Allman, Xavier Miller, Waylon Gibson, Donovan Christmas, Pavel Cartis, Tyshaun Daniels, Gordon Waits and Jaecob Harvey. The team is led by Lieutenant Colonel Ray McDowell, JROTC Senior Army Instructor at LEHS.

Lesley Corner Director of Assessment

Rose Montgomery Camden High Interim Principal

The KCSD Board of Trustees recently approved the hiring of Lesley Corner as the district’s new Director of Assessment and Rose Timmerberg Montgomery as the interim principal of Camden High School. Both changes are effective January 4, 2024.

Corner joined KCSD in 2010 as an assistant principal at Camden High School, and was promoted to principal in 2019. In that role, she earned Principal’s Silver and Gold Levels in the Center for Executive Education Leadership (CEEL) program. As an assistant principal at Camden High, she was chosen as the 2016 South Carolina Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year, a finalist for the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ Assistant Principal of the Year Award, and an “emerging leader'' by ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum).

She previously taught English in Lexington/Richland School District 5, where she was honored as the District Teacher of the Year.

Corner earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Winthrop University, a Masters of Education degree from the University of South Carolina, and an Educational Specialist degree with Superintendent licensure from University of South Carolina. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education Systems Improvement from the University of South Carolina. She is certified as a teacher, secondary principal, secondary supervisor, and superintendent.

Corner is a member of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum.

With more than 20 years of education experience, Rose Montgomery currently serves as the assistant director of Woolard Technology Center (WTC), where she has served since 2019. Prior to joining WTC, she served as an assistant principal at North Central High School for 10 years, where they received several recognitions as a bronze level U.S News and World Report’s Top High School in the nation.

Montgomery is a 1995 Camden High School graduate, and returned to teach French at her alma mater from 2001-2009, where she served as a department head for five years. She served as a part of the administration team as an administrative assistant from 2006-2009. In 2007, she was named the school’s teacher of the year.

Montgomery holds a bachelor’s degree in French from the University of South Carolina and master’s degree in Secondary Administration from the University of South Carolina. She is certified as a teacher, secondary principal, and secondary supervisor.

She completed the KCSD Developing Administrators Program and the South Carolina Department of Education Developing Aspiring Principals Program. Montgomery is a member of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators and South Carolina Association for Career and Technical Education.

KCSO Graduation LEHS Photography Announcement Students Visit KCSO

In a unique field trip experience, Mr. Alan Riches’s photography class at Lugoff-Elgin High School (LEHS) visited the Kershaw County Sheriff 's Office (KCSO) to take portraits of officers and focus their lenses on a world they might not often see. This hands-on field trip not only helped hone students’ photography skills but also offered the opportunity to build community relations while preparing them for practical applications of their art.

Your KCSO is very pleased to announce Lieutenant Carol Tarte’s recent completion of BCERT (Basic Computer Evidence Recovery Training). This is a course designed to train first responders to successfully respond to and process a computer crime scene in a home or business environment. BCERT is a five-week course designed to provide hands-on experience with computer hardware, device imaging solutions, forensic analysis tools, legal issues and report generation for law enforcement officers performing as cyber incident responders and digital evidence examiners.

Elgin Toy Round-up Donation
