Leadershipineducationrarelybegins withasingledefiningmoment.More often,itdevelopsthrough experience,throughlistening,adapting,and stayingcommittedtotheworkevenwhenthe pathforwardisnotyetfullyclear.ForEric Baugher,thatpathhasbeenshapedbyasteady focusonmeetingstudents’needsand strengtheningsystemsthatsupporttheir success.
AfterearninghisMasterofEducationfromthe UniversityofFindlayinOhio,Baugher,a nativeOhioan,waspreparedtoteachsocial studies.Butlocalopportunitieswerelimited, andstayingclosetohisfamilyfarmmattered justasmuchasstartinghiscareer.Heaccepted along-termsubstitutepositionatTiffin ColumbianHighSchoolinOhio,steppinginto aCareer-BasedIntervention(CBI)classroom.
Itwasnotmeanttolast,yettheexperience shiftedsomething.Thestudentsheworked withdidnotalwaysfitwithinthetraditional system,andtheworkdemandedmorethan standardteaching.Itrequiredpatience, adaptability,andadeeperunderstandingof whatholdsstudentsback.
Whentheprogramwasdiscontinued,Baugher chosenottowalkawayfromthatspace. Instead,hejoinedtheNorthCentralOhio EducationalServiceCenter,beginninga twelve-yearstretchthatwouldshapehis approachtoalternativeeducation.Overtime, hemovedacrossrolesasaCBIteacher,an educatorinanalternativeschool,andlateran InterventionSpecialist.Eachsettingrevealed thesamepattern.Somestudentswerenot failingthesystem;thesystemwasfailingthem.
AvisittoNewLeaforganization’sschoolin Mansfield,partofitsBuckeyeCommunity SchoolsnetworkinOhio,broughtthat realizationintofocus.TheNewLeafdropout preventionandcreditrecovery(DOPR)model feltalignedwiththeworkhehadbeenmoving towardallalong.Hejoinedsoonafter,firstin Marion,thenasPrincipalinMansfield,and laterasDirectorofNorthernOperations.There wasnosingleturningpoint.Justaseriesof decisionstostayclosetothework thatmattered.

Leadership,inthiscontext,islessaboutoversightand moreaboutalignment.AsDirectorofNorthern OperationsforNewLeafOrganization,Baugher worksacrosscampusestosupportschoolleaders, strengthenprograms,andensuresystemsremain responsivetotheneedsofeverystudent.
Thescaleofthatworkshowsinitsoutcomes.More than5,500graduateshavecomethroughtheNewLeaf system,eachwithapathshapedaroundtheir circumstancesratherthanagainstthem.Thatmilestone standsasoneofthemostmeaningfulindicatorsof impactnotsimplybecauseofthenumberitself,but becauseofwhatitrepresentsforstudentsandtheir futures.
TheNewLeafmodelitselfchallengesconvention. Ratherthanaskingstudentstoadjusttorigid schedules,programsaredesignedtomeetthemwhere theyare.Learningextendsintoworkplaces,schedules remainflexiblewithexpandedhours,andplansare builtaroundindividualgoals.
