County recognizes May as Mental Health Awareness Month On May 1, County Executive George Latimer officially launched May as “Mental Health Awareness Month” in Westchester. Latimer announced the annual recognition would appear in digital form outside the Westchester County Center for the month of May. A banner will also be displayed in the entranceway of the Michaelian Office Building, in addition to a series of other initiatives spearheaded by the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health. The message of Mental Health Awareness Month is that mental health wellness is for everyone, and there are practical tools that everyone can use to improve mental health. “This is one of the few occasions I get as County Executive to officially declare May as Mental Health Awareness Month in Westchester,” Latimer said. “The importance of this event is obviously promoting good mental health, which is more relevant today than ever as we continue to face the impacts of the pandemic as a community. There
is a stigma that is often attached to mental health needs, and we want to take time this month to turn the conversation towards wellness and resilience.” This year, in recognition of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, which ran from May 2-6, Latimer announced the county’s recent award of a New York State Office of Mental Health System of Care Expansion Grant. This grant will allow Westchester to establish a Children’s Cabinet. The Children’ Cabinet, consisting of county departments and key stakeholders, will be charged with strengthening collaboration between the various child-serving systems. This will be accomplished by using a strategic framework to better share data, promote best practices, and identify gaps in meeting the needs of children and families. “It is because of a lack of education and communication that mental health issues are still so prevalent, I hope that discussions and involvement like this will help to remove
the stigmas surrounding mental illness and encourage young people to reach out and seek help for themselves and those around them, as it did for me when I struggled with the aftermath of the pandemic,” said Sarah Nabi, a sophomore at Hendrick Hudson High School. Mental Health Awareness Month is a nationwide effort to address and overcome the stigma associated with mental health needs. One in five people will experience some type of mental health illness during their lifetime, but everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health. As part of the county’s efforts to promote May as Mental Health Awareness Month, the county Department of Community Mental Health is launching a “Tweet a Day for May” campaign, sharing information about events, ideas and resources. Posts will be accessible by going to: Twitter at @WestchesterDCMH, Facebook at @ westchesterdcmh and Instagram at
westchester_county_dcmh. “The mental health of all Westchester County residents is a top priority,” said Michael Orth, county Department of Community Mental Health commissioner. “The pandemic continues to take a toll on everyone’s mental health. Knowing the signs and symptoms and who to link to if you are concerned about yourself or a loved one is an important first step in getting help.” Other training and awareness events for May as Mental Health Awareness Month will include Mental Health First Aid Training throughout the month, NAMI of Westchester Walk on May 14, a community training forum, “Supporting People with Mental Health and Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorders Involved in the Justice System on May 13, and many other events. For additional information on resources and training programs, contact the Department of Community Mental Health at 995-5220. (Submitted)
Edwin Gaynor, the former catholic school teacher and coach implicated in a slew of sexual abuse cases throughout Westchester, has died, the Review has learned.Gaynor’s death—just weeks before the Ossining resident was scheduled for a deposition—has thrown a wrench into the proceedings of the Child Victims Act lawsuits that have been filed against him. Now, the case will have to proceed without any testimony from the man who has been accused of molestation by more than 35 plaintiffs. Gaynor, 87, was found dead in his apartment on May 2 by Paul Puccini, a retired Mount Vernon police detective tasked with serving the accused sexual abuser with court documents pertaining to the lawsuits that named Gaynor, the Archdiocese of New York and several local catholic schools as being complicit in a decades-long plot to cover up Gaynor’s sexual abuse. Puccini estimated that Gaynor had been dead for some time before his body was discovered. “After a few seconds, I was able to smell the scent of a dead body. As a retired police detective, I have been around decaying corpses before and recognized the smell,” wrote Puccini in an affidavit. “I then walked about five to six feet into the apartment and
saw his dead body … he looked like he was turning black and in the beginning stages of decaying.” The retired detective also noted that there was blood on Gaynor’s face and hand. Puccini had been at Gaynor’s residence to serve him with documents notifying the former teacher that he had been held in contempt of court for refusing to sit for a deposition and ordering Gaynor to appear at the Ossining Town Court on May 16 to submit his testimony. Since legal action was initially taken against Gaynor in November 2019, numerous plaintiffs have come forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct over a period of time that stretched more than four decades and included stops at local parishes, including Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scarsdale and Holy Rosary in Hawthorne. The former teacher and coach had repeatedly refused to testify in his own defense, citing poor health and advanced age. In October 2020, he was held in contempt of court for the first time. Gaynor’s refusals to be deposed, court shutdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and unsuccessful motions by his co-defendants to have him declared unfit to defend himself in the civil suit, led to several delays in the legal proceedings. Westchester Land Trust announces new president Westchester Land Trust’s current President Lori Ensinger will step down from her leadership role and pass the baton to Kara Hartigan Whelan, who currently serves as vice president of the organization, according to Bruce Churchill, chairman of the Board of Directors. Ensinger has led Westchester Land Trust, WLT, since 2013 and will join the organization’s staff as a senior advisor focusing on land protection projects. Whelan has been a valued staff member and leader at WLT since 2012, holding the role of director of Conservation Programs before becoming vice president in 2015. Ensinger and Whelan will shift roles later this year, enabling the team to continue seamlessly to advance the organization’s conservation goals. During her tenure, Ensinger led the nationally accredited organization through the protection of more than 1,500 acres, including the protection of Stuart’s Fruit Farm, the oldest working farm in Westchester County. Ensinger negotiated complex projects that led to the protection of parcels ranging in size from 1/3 of an acre to 275 acres and spanning the organization’s entire geographic region from urban to rural landscapes. Prior to becoming president, Ensinger was a member of WLT’s
Board of Directors from 2004 through 2013 and served as chair of both the organization’s Investment Committee and Governance & Nominating Committee. She and her late husband, Bill Kuebler, donated a 17-acre conservation easement to WLT in 2005. In her new role, Ensinger will work with staff to implement WLT’s strategic conservation plan, lending her expertise to real estate negotiations and conservation finance. “I’ve been honored to serve as President of the Westchester Land Trust over these past nine years and I’m immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished together as a team,” Ensinger said. “When I reflect on the special places we’ve protected, relationships we’ve forged in the community, and connections to nature we’ve helped spark throughout Westchester, I’m confident that we have made a difference. I feel that now is the perfect time for me to pass the leadership torch to Kara, whose unique perspective and expertise will allow WLT’s work in the community to continue to grow, and I look forward to remaining a part of those efforts as Senior Advisor.” Whelan, a Westchester native, is a highly regarded land conservationist and industry thought leader who currently directs WLT’s fundraising, events, marketing and conservation
programming. She has overseen community outreach initiatives at WLT and has worked closely with Ensinger on strategic land protection projects. “Lori has done a tremendous job stewarding this organization and I look forward to building upon all that she has achieved during her tenure,” Whelan said. “I’ve learned so much about leadership from Lori over the years and I’m grateful for the opportunity to step into this new role knowing she will continue to work as a member of our professional team.” In 2016, Whelan helped to launch and coordinate a regional conservation partnership known as Hudson to Housatonic (H2H), which is a collaboration of more than 50 conservation organizations in Connecticut and New York. She leads WLT’s farmland linking and food justice work and represents the organization as a regional navigator for American Farmland Trust. Whelan holds degrees from Boston College and the University of Michigan and has more than 25 years of conservation experience, including land protection and fundraising positions with The Trustees of Reservations, United States Environmental Protection Agency, City Parks Foundation, and most recently, The Greenwich Land Trust. Author to present history of famed Bronx theme park Mike Virgintino, author of “Freedomland USA: The Ultimate History” will present the history of the famed park that once occupied the land that is now Co-op City in the Bronx. The presentation will take place at the New Rochelle Public Library on Saturday, May 14 at 2 p.m. Freedomland U.S.A. was celebrated as the “Disneyland of the East.” While it survived only five seasons (1960-1964), to this day the park generates fond memories among baby boomers who enjoyed its American history-themed attractions. Freedomland U.S.A. was conceived and built by C.V. Wood and his Marco Engineering Company. Known to many as Woody, he was Disneyland’s first employee and he brought Walt Disney’s imagination to life by leading the team that built that park. “Freedomland U.S.A. is both New York City history
and a significant portion of America’s theme park history,” said Virgintino. “America never had seen anything like it and we certainly never will see it duplicated. It was conceived to tell the story, in an entertaining way, of America’s history. Today’s parks, with a few exceptions, are built solely for thrills.” Virgintino will share stories about the building of the park, background about the various attractions, the celebrities who appeared at the park, and the history of the park as a “placeholder” for future development. The presentation will also include a memorabilia display and a free actual Freedomland token for all attendees. Virgintino is a journalist and marketing/public relations executive, and was raised in the neighborhood immediately outside the park. The New Rochelle Public Library is a community re-
source that seeks to improve the life of every citizen in our city. The Library offers a comprehensive print and digital collection that includes retrospective and current materials, up-to-date technology for public use, and a wide range of community services and programs tailored to a diverse audience. Chartered in 1894, NRPL is a
school-district library with its own operating budget and a Board of Trustees composed of seven elected members. It has served the 79,000 residents of New Rochelle from its Main Library building in the downtown business district since 1979. A smaller branch, located in the park in front of the New Rochelle High School, was restored through a grassroots effort and currently operates as the Huguenot Children’s Library. Dear Savvy Senior, I am planning to retire and apply for my Social Security benefits in July. When can I expect my first check, and is direct deposit my only option for receiving my monthly payment? Almost 62 Dear Almost 62,
Generally, Social Security retirement benefits, as well as disability and survivor benefits, are paid in the month after the month they are due. So, if you want to start receiving your Social Security benefits in July, your July benefits will be distributed in August. The day of the month you receive your benefit payment, however, will depend on your birthdate. Here’s the schedule of when you can expect to receive your monthly check. If you were born on the:
• 1st through the 10th: Expect your check to be deposited on the second Wednesday of each month. • 11th through the 20th: Expect your check to be deposited on the third Wednesday of each month. • 21st through the 31st: Expect your check to be deposited on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
There are, however, a few exceptions to this schedule. For example, if the day your Social Security check is supposed to be deposited happens to be a holiday, your check will be deposited the previous day. And, if you are receiving both Social Security benefits and SSI payments, your Social Security check will be deposited on the third day of the month.

Barbara Hart, who represents several of the plaintiffs on behalf of Grant & Eisenhofer, P.A., had previously lobbied the courts to bring a swift resolution to the case given the advancing age of Gaynor and many of the alleged victims. In May 2021, Kevin Swayne— one of the first accusers to claim Gaynor had molested him 1964— died at the age of 63. In response to Swayne’s death, Hart penned a letter to state Supreme Court Justice Steven M. Jaeger petitioning the court to compel Gaynor to testify in his own defense. “Plaintiffs in other actions … are also elderly and/or have distressing diagnoses or serious medical condi-
tions,” Hart wrote. “There will be significant delay and prejudice to all of the other consolidated plaintiffs in pursuing their independent actions.” The latest contempt order—issued by Judge Leonard D. Steinman on April 29—would have been the most forceful to date, as Steinman ruled that an arrest warrant would have been issued for Gaynor had he not appeared for the May 16 deposition. In light of Gaynor’s death, counsel for the plaintiffs has filed a motion asking for the court’s permission to search Gaynor’s home for any material relevant to the case, arguing that Gaynor—who had pre-
viously offered written admissions of two counts of molestation—had been in contact with several of his alleged victims over the years. “Indeed, at a minimum, Gaynor clearly tracked and wrote to many of the survivors and admitted to keeping copies of letters he sent; his records may fill out those facts, as multiple Plaintiffs testified to receiving letters which they no longer have,” read the motion. “Unfortunately, Gaynor’s testimony has now been lost, but his documents are still able to be preserved, though this window is slowly closing.” CONTACT: sports@hometwn.com

Latimer to relaunch public engagement program for airport Westchester County Executive George Latimer is reintroducing a community engagement program, On the Horizon, to hear from the public on the future of Westchester County Airport. In February 2020, Latimer first launched the Program to support the Master Plan Supplement for Westchester County Airport. After the COVID-19 pandemic put the project on hold for more than two years, Latimer is once again opening up a countywide discussion to listen to the concerns of residents, community organizations, the business community, environmental activists and more. Together, Latimer is hoping to create a new vision for Westchester County Airport. “Westchester County Airport is just one project that unfortunately came to a screeching halt with the
onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but my administration is committed to completing a thorough evaluation of airport operations and its impacts, and a robust community engagement program,” Latimer said. “Whether you use the Airport to fly with your family to Florida, to pick up your parents who are visiting for the winter, or you use the Airport for business travel, we need to hear from you. Our goal is to engage everyone the Airport touches—our homeowners, business community, environmental groups, community organizations and more—a balance I am confident we can achieve. We look forward to having the public be an integral part of this process moving forward, and together, we will ensure the Airport evolves as a valuable, transportation resource.” The Master Plan Supplement
Community Engagement Program, called On the Horizon, includes a series of public events such as town halls. The Master Plan Supplement will focus on analysis of the airport with respect to the physical condition of the airport property, buildings and infrastructure, additional analysis of noise and environmental impacts and the local and regional economic impact of the airport. This analysis will be used to develop a vision for the airport in the future. “The Airport plays a significant role in the economic development of the County,” said Bridget Gibbons, director of Economic Development. “This Master Plan Supplement and the feedback from the business community will be vital in shaping a vibrant economic landscape in Westchester County in the years to come.” (Submitted)

The end is nigh LIVE MIKE Mike Smith
It’s pretty hard to believe that we’ve come to the end of the road— or at least the beginning of the end of the road. Just a few shorts weeks ago, it seems, spring sports were just kicking off. Players were bundling up in parkas and ski caps to hit the turf to prepare for the upcoming campaign. Now, in the middle of May, players still find themselves tossing on extra layers (this weather has been something, to say the least!), but now they’ve set their sights on postseason tournaments. I’ve been covering high school sports for a long time, and it seems like each year, the spring season seems to fly right by. But this year? It seemed to have a rocket strapped to its back. Obviously, my 10-day vacation matters has exacerbated things in that regard, but as I mentioned earlier, I think the weather might have also had something to do with it. As sports fans in the northeast, we’re used to a certain pattern to
spring. Those late March/early April games can sometimes be a horror show, with temperatures in the 30s and swirling winds making it tough for even the hardiest of athletes—or fans—to take much pleasure from the game. But we put up for those less than ideal days for the glorious climes that come as the calendar turns, those mid-70s sunny days that can make it a joy, even if you’re on the wrong side of a 17-2 drubbing. But we just haven’t had those days this year, have we? By playoff time, I’ve usually been donning shorts and short sleeved shirts for weeks. But last Saturday night, I found myself patrolling the sidelines at Nugent Stadium with a wool hat, gloves and a ski jacket. It doesn’t seem right, but it also warps our sense of time when the general seasonal rhythms we are used to are interrupted. Luckily, it seems, our luck has turned, weather-wise. The temperatures across final week of the regular season looks to be in line with what we normally see this time of year. It finally feels like spring, just as several teams—unfortunately—are gearing up to play what could be their final games.
But aside from the weather, I think a more generous reading of the seeming fleetness of the spring season is that so many of our local teams came in with such high expectation. When that happens, when you have teams come in with obvious designs on postseason glory, the tendency—as someone who covers those teams—is to look at each individual game in respect to how it advances the club’s end-goal. I find myself looking at how a club performed in an early-April contest not as a singular game, but as part of a larger narrative. And when you’re focused on an end result, as a journalist, sometimes it’s easy to forget the smaller moments that make these seasons memorable for our student athletes. So best of luck to all of our teams in the next few weeks. While not everyone might be destined for a Section I plaque, the playoffs are here, the weather is finally agreeing, and it’s time for everyone to find a time to shine. Now it’s up to us journalists to capture that moment.

Eagles lax rallies to halt Huskies BOYS LACROSSE

EASTCHESTER HARRISON EASTCHESTER HS
11 10 5/5/22
Game Notes: • Owen Blume scored Eastchester last 3 goals • Cole Mayclim and Brandon Alstodt both had 3 goals for the Huskies • Eastchester trailed 6-2 in the 2nd half
By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor When the final whistle sounded, ending Thursday afternoon’s tilt between Eastchester and Harrison, it wasn’t difficult to see how much this game meant to the Eagles. A loud cheer erupted as the sidelines emptied, sticks and gloves went airborne as players mobbed the day’s heroes including Owen Blume and goalie Kyle Smith. But for all the emotion on display,
Thursday’s contest wasn’t being played to decide a league or section title. It was just a back-and-forth thriller between two bitter rivals. Trailing the Huskies 6-2 more than midway though the third quarter on Thursday, the Eagles orchestrated a stunning second half comeback to beat Harrison 11-10 in a game that Eagles’ players admitted was more than just an average, regular season meeting. “This win was huge for us, especially after last year when these guys knocked out our goalie,” said Owen Blume. “It’s been a few years since we’ve been able to beat them, so to finally get a win over Harrison, we really wanted it.” Blume—who led the Eagles with four goals alongside Dom Sperandio—saved his best play for crunchtime, scoring Eastchester’s final three goals of the day to finally bury a tough Huskies team. Blume gave the Eagles their first lead of the second half with 9:16 left to play, broke another tie with a score five minutes later, and eventually put the game out of reach with another with just 1:32 remaining.
“I knew I had to get things going,” said the junior. “I just had to find a way to take over.” Alex Titto rounded out Eastchester’s scoring with three goals on the afternoon, while Cole Mayclim and Brandon Alstodt recorded three goals apiece for the Huskies. The loss drops Harrison’s record to 3-9 on the year, while Eastchester (6-7) has now won two straight, with just two games left in the regular season. Blume explained that it is especially vital for the Eagles to close out on a positive note before the playoffs begin, especially given the fact the club recently went through something of a late-season slump with losses against powerhouse programs including Rye. “I think we lost something like four in a row, so to win today and to get that win against North Salem, that’s important for us,” said Blume. The Eagles will finish with games against Blind Brook (7-4) and Pelham (8-6) on May 9 and 11, respectively. CONTACT: sports@hometwn.com
