Letter from The Dwight School Foundation Board Chair

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, Serving as a trustee of The Dwight School Foundation is a privilege and I’m proud to stand alongside those who give their time and resources to support the Foundation — all of you whose generosity makes a difference in the lives of students every day.

Thanks to your contributions to the Annual Fund, the Foundation provided 43 percent of all student financial aid awarded and 90 professional development grants to faculty who bring the latest teaching strategies back to campus to benefit all students.

Additionally, the Foundation funded innovation grants for students developing their own projects in Dwight’s Spark Tank, including five $2,500 college scholarships to those who reached the final launch stage. I want to thank Dave Lindsey (David ’18, Maggie ’19, JackieRay ’21), Chair of the Spark Tank Committee, and his fellow members for nurturing young entrepreneurs in Dwight’s incubator, which has continued to garner media attention in its second year.

During our Spring Benefit, we celebrated Dwight’s unwavering commitment to igniting the spark of genius in all of our children and to preparing them for bright futures that await them. The festive evening brought our community together and netted over $350,000 — 21% more than last year. We owe this success to the hard work and dedication of our Spring Benefit Committee, co-chaired by Lorena Matus Castellanos (Regina ’19, Luis Fernando ’21, Mateo ’28) and Suraya Khan (Yasmin ’29).

Dwight is distinguished from other independent schools in New York in numerous ways, including its culture of innovation, dedication to personalized learning, and status as a global standard-bearer in education. Moreover, Dwight is simply unparalleled in its stability and consistency under Chancellor Stephen Spahn’s visionary leadership. As the longest-serving head of school in the U.S., he has devoted himself to mentoring generations of graduates, including my own two sons, and to breaking ground in education over the last 50 years. Chancellor Spahn, together with Vice Chancellor Blake Spahn and Head of School Dianne Drew, looks to the future with exciting and bold plans for all of our children.

Letter from the Chancellor and Head of School

Scene Night, and again throughout the year, as the space was transformed for a range of productions, illustrating how unique and flexible the space is.

During the second year of Spark Tank, our incubator designed to nurture student innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills beyond the classroom, students continued to inspire us with their innovative thinking. Since launching, 90 students have brought novel ideas for businesses, non-profits, and products to Spark Tank for guidance, mentorship, and funding from The Dwight School Foundation. Integral to our School’s ability to keep advancing and expanding is The Dwight School Foundation, and we are grateful to the Foundation for funding financial aid for gifted and talented students who

would not otherwise be able to afford tuition; innovation grants for Spark Tank participants; and faculty professional development, which nourishes an ongoing quest for knowledge that directly benefits students in the classroom.

On behalf of our faculty and students — beneficiaries of the Foundation’s generosity — we thank the Foundation and its Board of Trustees, Chair Susan Kessler, and all the Board Committee chairs and members who devote their time and energies to raising funds throughout the year.

In the pages that follow, you’ll read about our community’s stellar support of the Annual Fund, Spring Benefit, and Capital projects, totaling more than $2.4 million. 2016-17 Participants and Ideas

Spark Tank Students can apply for monetary grants to help them develop their ideas from concept to marketplace launch.

Young entrepreneurs who successfully reach the launch stage receive a $2,500 college scholarship.

LEVEL 3 - DEVELOPED AND TESTED PROTOTYPE STAGE • Create a prototype of the product (or a pilot of the service) • Test the prototype with the intended audience and collect feedback from trials • Create a plan for developing the prototype into a finished product • Produce a detailed budget including costs and pricing

Annual Giving

Spring Benefit A highlight from this school year was The Dwight School Foundation’s Spring Benefit, held at Edison Ballroom.

We would like to acknowledge the following groups that play a critical role in supporting The Dwight School Foundation’s efforts: The Dwight School Foundation Trustees advise and work in conjunction with the Chancellor,

Head of School, and the Foundation’s Advancement Office to think critically about how Foundation resources can positively impact the lives of Dwight students and faculty.

The Annual Fund Committee solicits gifts from members of the Dwight community to provide support for student financial aid and innovation grants, and faculty professional development.

The Senior Gift Committee solicits Annual Fund gifts from twelfth grade families and helps

identify spaces or items to be named in honor of the graduating class.

The Spark Tank Committee advises, mentors, and approves funding for K-12 student projects.

The Spring Benefit Committee organizes and promotes the Foundation’s largest community event.

The Parents Association Executive Committee works closely with the Foundation to promote Foundation initiatives within the parent body. The PA President is an ex-officio member of the Foundation Board of Trustees.
