Technology

Satellite TV and Internet T

here are many things in this world that I don’t understand. For example, why do Israel compete in the Eurovision song contest (it has to do with the European Broadcasting Union but I still can’t find Israel on any maps of Europe)? Why do French people park between two parked vehicles when there are a million other spaces? And why are multipack items often more expensive than buying the same amount of items individually? Really, why? Anyway, whilst I was musing upon these things, Mrs W expressed surprise that I could even consider such problems when, in her view, the most I can usually manage is to walk, talk and not fart at the same time (though not always in the case of the latter). Once again, it’s the little bits of motivation like that which keep me going. Anyway, how are you all dear readers? Keeping well and enjoying the good (well, it’s good as I type this) weather I hope. Shall we get a wriggle on? Technology is great isn’t it? It can navigate us to where we want to go, keep us in visual communication with anyone in the world and park our cars for us in some cases. It can even show us who is at our front door - so we can pretend we’re not in. However, does it need to be so complicated to set up? Most TVs these days don’t come with instructions but a built-in manual that you have to be an expert to find and understand. Freesat boxes come with minimal instructions which cover little more than turning on and changing channels. If you find you have a piece of equipment that you’re struggling to operate or connect properly, then please feel free to get in touch to see if we can help. Freesat is not the same as Freeview. Please don’t buy a Freeview box for the reception of UK TV. It’s the ‘sat’ bit we want. If you only have one HDMI input in your TV but have a satellite receiver and a DVD player that only have HDMI output sockets, what do you do? Well, you can either swap the cables each time you want to use the other piece of equipment, or you can use an HDMI switching box. This box has multiple HDMI sockets to receive multiple pieces of equipment (satellite box, DVD player, games console etc) and then a single output to go to your TV. The better boxes will then automatically switch to whichever source you are using. Basic versions may need you to press a button. To those who have a satellite receiver with both a scart and an HDMI output, there is no need for both cables to be connected to the TV. It’s one or the other. Preferably HDMI as it offers far better quality. Scart cables cannot carry highdefinition signals. Yes, you can use a region 1 sky mini-dish. But don’t. They are OK for use in Northern France but are too small to be effective in bad weather in these parts. Also, if you need a new LNB for it, it’ll need to come from the UK as a standard LNB with a 40mm neck won’t fit properly. I often hear from people who have such a dish say ‘well, you nTRÉDɢrSÉM}vRo˙UJvÉ

expect to lose the signal when it rains’. No, we don’t. Not if you use a decent dish that’s correctly aligned. A bigger dish receives more signal. When that signal is diminished in bad weather, you’ll have more to play with than you will with a sky mini-dish. Rainfall of biblical proportions should be the only time you’ll maybe experience a loss of satellite signal. For those of you thinking of having satellite broadband, another bonus of the ‘Neosat’ service is that you can attach an LNB for French TV (TNTSAT) to the same dish. Nordnet can provide you with a bracket that holds an LNB for TV reception, allowing you to have French TV. They can also supply the TNTSAT receiver, but these can be purchased easily enough or we can supply one if you prefer. Please note, it cannot service UK TV reception though. As always, please feel free to get in touch if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your requirements. Contact details can be found on the advert. Have a good month. The Man with the Midas touch

I

n the heart of Parthenay's old town something is brewing...literally. A new taproom Brasserie Du Coq has just opened its doors and is receiving rave reviews. Vincent Jones is the man with the Midas touch producing a range of craft beer, on site, with no additives or preservatives, just a beautifully smooth taste. Brasserie Du Coq can be found just round the corner from the main church. It has a bar at the front with large seating area, as well as a stage for live events. At the back you can see the fermenters and other pristine equipment were Vincent creates his alchemy. As well as the craft beer (IPA, stout, blonde, amber and a special - a different style every few weeks), he brews his own cider. All available on tap or in 33cl and 75cl bottles or 20 and 30 litre kegs. For events they supply 2x20 litre kegs, 1x20 and 1x30 litre keg or 2x30 litre kegs and a two tap dispensing system. Vincent has travelled the world. He was born in the UK, grew up in South Africa and moved to France (in the middle of the pandemic) from Brazil (where he lived and worked) to pursue his dream of opening the taproom. He takes great pride in what he has achieved, with the help of his wife Monica, and would like to cordially invite you to visit the brasserie and sample some of the amber nectar. He is only too pleased to show you how the magic is done. Brasserie Du Coq is at 61 Rue Jean Jaures, 79200.

Traces of the Sibyls ˙H}`NÉÉ

Origins and ancient times The origins of the Sibyl traditions are veiled in the mists of Greek and Middle Eastern antiquity. Each of the explanations I’ve read is different, and although they do not conflict violently, they do represent the individual viewpoints of the writer. And so it will be here, with one important difference: I am not an expert, just an ordinary reader who is trying to make sense of things. From my point of view, prophecy of any sort is only valid within a context where the future has been determined by an external power or by the universe in general. What is extraordinary to me is that people think that they can exploit destiny; the two words are mutually exclusive. This problem is a real problem in cosmology, multiple universes and the study of the nature of time. leaves. In other parts of the world in traditional societies, and also in earlier societies, the shaman will have played a role as intermediary between the gods and humans and in offering forms of prophecy. The religions of the ancient world were very preoccupied with fertility, with mother goddesses and Mother Earth – Gaia – speaking via the mouths of women. There seem to be sibylline links to Achilles and Odysseus and the pilgrimage to Dodona, a shrine dedicated to the Earth Mother in the second millennium BCE, a cult that survived into the Christian era.

If one looks far back in time, to the Mesolithic-era huntergatherers, or perhaps even further, to the Neanderthals, and considers their environment, with its constant danger from large predators and continual food insecurity, then it is not surprising that people were concerned with survival. After all, their life was full of the unpredictable and the unknowable. Anatomically modern humans some 30,000 years ago frequenting cave systems in western Europe, such as that at Lascaux, recorded their relationship with the animal world in their cave paintings. The search for reason in chaos will have led to beliefs, and the cave paintings of these earlier humans were perhaps the start of the ritualising of society and the evolution of the idea of a divinity all-knowing. Gods as the cause of disaster and salvation lived, in their imagination, in localities in the sky and the ground, and animist belief in the dwelling places of these gods led to, amongst other places, people thinking gods are located in grottos near sources, water being the origin and supporter of life. There is a deep desire within people to know what lies before them, and the more uncertain the times, the more there is a need for, and faith placed upon, knowing the future. This is so in the present day, and even within our Western societies, astrology and other forms of prediction are still practised. Certainly in the XIX century, all forms of spiritualism and prediction were rife, from the withdrawing rooms of society and their spiritualists to the fairgrounds with readers of palms and country farmhouses with the more homely reading of tea 34 | The Deux-Sèvres Monthly, June 2022

The first mention of a sibyl as prophetess is connected with Delphi. The Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, with its oracle, was already home to an order of priestesses – Pythia – who were consulted by the powerful. Up to the end of the Alexandrian century, that is, 400 BCE, there was mention of only one Sibyl – that of Delphi. The Delphi priestesses were separate from the Delphi Sibyl both in person and in function. The Sibyl was not a priestess but, rather, a mouthpiece of a god, and she declaimed what welled up in her soul. These words were not directly and unambiguously understandable and could not be interpreted, but sufficient value was attributed to them and their sibylline source that they were recorded for later generations. The Sibyls had, of course, their acolytes – staff, as you might say – and one supposes that they gathered and collated the prophesies into what later became known as the sibylline books. The Sibyls are identified by their dwelling place, and this means that the position of

calendars (calendrier) of the working year in particular and did not appreciate the wealth of colour in the paintings on the ceiling of the nave. The photos I have are good but could, in the light of hindsight, have been better – maybe a second visit is called for. The church, Saint Martial, at Tauriac dates from the early XVI century. It comprises a nave and two bays, also vaulted, and is very rich in paintings. There are four chapels, three of which have their vaults painted – one with the genesis story, another with the sixteen patriarchs and the third with twelve Sibyls. In addition, the walls are also covered with paintings, depicting the life of Mary and the beheading of John the Baptist, among other scenes.

prophetess must have been handed down to new generations of acolytes, although some traditions imply that the Sibyls were hundreds of years old. The Sibyls were traditionally virginal young women living in a grotto or cave uttering predictions of the future as the desire to prophesy prompted them to do so. The prophesies were traditionally written on tree leaves (maybe the linguistic origin of the leaves of a book) and were copied and changed by later generations to suit the situation of the times and so in the long run became a political tool. In 400 BCE, there was only one Sibyl mentioned in Greek and Middle Eastern literature – Homer makes no mention of Sibyls. However, by 100 BCE, there were ten Sibyls mentioned, and a few more came to light later in the Roman period. In general any single literature source does not mention more than twelve named prophetesses, although nineteen or more different names can be found in total. I suppose that that is a question of naming conventions. No two lists are the same, and all have logical inconsistencies and are the subject of erudite discussion. All of the named sites are on the eastern Mediterranean coast and the Italian peninsula.

As with all these old paintings, the paintings at Tauriac have deteriorated in the course of time and have been restored with more or less care and expertise. The wall paintings seem to be more original, with their reduced colour pallet and naive style. The inscriptions, as is borne out by the mixed use of Occitan and old French, appear to be of a popular and instructive nature. The vault paintings underwent restoration in the XIX century., which raises the ever-present question in archaeology and art history of whether the actions of the researcher will destroy good later work in the desire to uncover earlier work. Here the decision has been to retain the XIX century restoration, which was good and followed the earlier but deteriorated paintings. The fourth chapel has a heavily whitewashed vault, which, if the white-wash were to be carefully removed, may reveal more paintings. Realising that the three vaults all in their own way are involved in a prediction of the coming and life of Jesus, I wonder what lies under the whitewash of the fourth chapel vault.

Tauriac, Lot Let us turn for a moment to modern France. At the moment of writing, I have visited but a few churches with wall paintings (fresques) of the Sibyles, as they are called in French; however, there are more that I plan to see in the future. Some years ago, my wife and I were in the Lot and stopped off in Tauriac because there was mention of fresques in the guidebook. In those days I was interested in fresques in general and in the The names and attributes of the Sibyls at Tauriac The twelve Sibyl names at Tauriac are :1 Erythrae, 2 Delphi, 3 Samos, 4 Hellespont, 5 Cumes, 6 Africa, 7 Libya, 8 Agrippa (Egypt?), 9 Persian, 10 Phrygian, 11 Europa and 12 Tibur. If you look at the photos of the individual Sibyls then you see a richness in clothing colours, expression and attributes as well as phylacteries with their prophesies, which I shall keep for another article. For now, I will just show some examples of these wall (ceiling?) paintings taken in the church Saint Martial de Tauriac courtesy of the Mairie.

The Song Of The Bee Buzz, Buzz, Buzz, This is the song of the bee. His legs are of yellow, a jolly good fellow, And yet a good worker is he. In days that are sunny, he’s getting his honey, In days that are cloudy, he’s hoarding his wax On pinks and on lilacs and gay daffodillies and columbine blossoms He levies a tax. Buzz, Buzz Buzz, The sweet-smelling clover, he humming, hangs over, The scent of the roses makes fragrant his wings. He never gets lazy, from thistle and daisy And weeds of the meadow, some treasure he brings. Buzz, Buzz, Buzz, From morning’s first grey light til’ fading of daylight, He’s singing and toiling, the summer day through, Oh! We may get weary and think work is dreary; Tis harder by far, to have nothing to do! Nancy Nelson Pendleton 1848-1902 The Deux-Sèvres Monthly, JvÉn

The Vineyard Guys June Is Bustin’ Out All Over by R}B]u.ovSMMR}v

rom the delicate flower heads that showed their faces at the beginning of May they transformed through the month and burst into flower to then become the beginnings of the fruit that will become the juice producing berries that our fabulous Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux will be made from. Nature has this amazing ability to supply us with everything we need, of the highest standard, with a little bit of help (well a lot of help sometimes), that we can then transform into a delicious snapshot of that year. We were lucky after the April frost to see the vines have fought back and are looking good, considering what they went through, there will be losses but they look like they will be minimal. After several uncertain years in the vineyard we are really starting to feel like we are ising a R returning to normality, even if it is a little different. It is lovely to get visitors returning that we haven’t seen for a while, it is if as they have woken up from the hibernation that was COVID and step out into the big, bright world again. As we move through the month we start raising the wires to contain the vine growth and cut the grass and turn the soil and do more weeding, didn’t we do a lot of that last month! Our transformation to Bio / Organic and the rebuilding of the soils biodynamics has

seemed to encourage the growth of grass and weeds or is it my imagination. There is something about June that really makes you feel like a glass of Rosé as the day closes and take time to appreciate the view that we are extremely luck to say is ours, Branston is flat out in the shade and Pickle is under his favourite tree looking for something to chase.

The world of wine is quite a mystery to some people, we hope our meanderings here help some of our readers to become more comfortable about wine and their choices. It is always good to have useful and useless facts to hand when it comes to wine so here are a few for you. ires Did you know that a glass of red wine is actually a health benefit, it can lessen the chance for Class 2 diabetes by 30%. At a wine tasting, holding the wine in your mouth for a few seconds then spitting it out (or swallowing) helps retain the flavour in the mouth and judge show the quality of the wine. Women are more inclined to the effects of wine than men. This is partly because they have less enzymes in the stomach lining that is needed to break down alcohol simply.

not only because of the flavour, but the red colour of the wine is considered lucky in Chinese culture and is favoured by the government. The Englishman Sir Kenelm Digby (1603-1665) invented the dark green wine bottle we all know today.

The organic compounds of red wine are more complex than those in blood serum. To consume the same amount of antioxidants in a glass of wine you would need to drink 7 glasses of orange juice or 20 glasses of apple juice. Wine has no fat or cholesterol so is kind of guilt free! You should only fill a wine glass a third full so you can swirl it in the glass and enjoy the aromas released in the vacant space within the glass. The world’s oldest bottle of wine was found near the town of Speyer, Germany. It dates to before A.D. 325 and is on display at the town’s historical museum. “Drinking to one’s health” came from ancient Greece. The host of dinner would take the first sip to assure his guests the wine was not poisoned. “Toasting” started in ancient Rome when the Romans sustained the Greek tradition. They would drop a piece of toasted bread into the wine glass to soften unsavoury tastes. Believe it or not, there are some people that have a fear of wine. It’s called “oenophobia”. During the early Roman times, it was forbidden for women to drink wine. Wives who were caught by their husbands drinking wine could be killed if "caught in the act".

There is a right and wrong way to hold a wine glass. The proper way is to hold by the stem so that the hand does not warm the glass and increase the temperature of the wine. Wine sealed with corks (as if there is any other way) should be stored lying down to keep the cork from dwindling and drying out and avoid it from possibly dropping in the wine. The liquid coming into contact with the cork also prevents airleakage into the bottle.

Setting fruit

A ton of grapes can be produced around 750 to 800 bottles of wine. Have you ever noticed how vineyards love to plant rose buses on the end of their vine rows? Roses are susceptible to the same ailments as vines and are an early warning system. Were you wondering… ”Is a grape really a berry”? By the formal botanical definition, grapes are considered berries since the firm definition of a berry is a fleshy fruit without a stone that is produced from a single flower containing one ovary.

A rose

Grapes are the most planted fruit all over the world. There are 10,000 varieties of wine grapes existing worldwide. The largest bottle of wine is the "Nebuchadnezzar." It equates to 20 regular-sized bottles or around 15 litres. While China is only the fifth-largest wine-producing country globally, it is the leading market for red wine. It's

We must also not forget Fathers Day on the 19th June.

The history of UK Father's Day began not too long after Mother's Day – both traditions first appeared in the early 20th century. However, the celebration of UK Father's Day originated in the USA. It first came to light in 1910 in a town in Washington called Spokane. Sonora Smart Dodd honoured her dad at the local YMCA. After listening to a sermon about Mother's Day, Dodd was inspired to create a holiday to recognize her father William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single dad to six children.

5 large eggs 300g Pork sausage meat 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed 140g cooked ham, shredded 25g sage, apple & onion stuffing mix 1 tsp chopped sage 1 tsp chopped thyme 1 tsp chopped parsley 100g plain flour, seasoned 100g dried breadcrumbs sunflower oil, for frying piccalilli, to serve Boil 4 eggs for 7 mins 30 secs exactly. Scoop out and place in a bowl of iced water. Leave them to cool completely, then peel. Put the sausage meat, pepper, ham, stuffing and herbs in a small bowl, mix to combine, then divide into four equal balls. Squash one of the balls between a piece of cling film until it’s as flat as possible. One at a time, lightly flour each cooked egg, then use the cling film to help roll the sausage meat around the egg to completely encase. Repeat with the remaining sausage balls and eggs. Beat the remaining egg and put on a plate. Put the flour and breadcrumbs on two separate plates. Roll the encased eggs in the flour, then the beaten egg and finally the breadcrumbs. To cook the scotch eggs, heat 5cm of the oil in a wide saucepan. Depending on the size of your pan, lower as many eggs as you can into the oil, and cook for 8-10 mins until golden and crispy. Drain on kitchen paper, leave to cool a little, then serve halved with some piccalilli.

Health, Beauty and Fitness

Health Matters by Sue Lennon

J

une sees me promoting Men’s Health Week, which in the UK starts around the 13th of June and generally ends on Fathers’ Day…though because it is an international event, each country tweaks the precise dates to suit themselves keeping broadly the same aims everywhere. As you may know, men’s prostate health was a large part of my professional life, so this event is close to my heart and old habits die hard…If you go to the loo in our house, sorry boys, but I can’t help listening to the strength of your flow and checking the time it takes! The European Men’s Health Forum describes how tackling men’s health problems requires a two pronged approach – the first addressing men’s health through research, policy and delivery of services that better suit men, and the second fostering improvements in the health-related behaviour of the men themselves. Now, I’m pretty clued up about the health stats for the UK but admit to being ignorant about how men fare here in France, so I had a poke around and found an EU document that tells us the great news that overall life expectancy in France is among the highest in the EU and our health service is mostly marvellous (as long as you ignore the Covid 19 figures). The less good news is that behavioural risk factors are higher here than in many countries; 1 in 4 adults smoke tobacco, alcohol consumption is 10% higher than most other EU countries and a lack of physical activity in young adults in France is second only to Italy. Obesity is a rising problem too. ‘Hang on, that’s not just men!’ I hear you cry…and I totally agree, but the reason it is particularly important for men to take notice is that there is a 6-year difference between the average life expectancy of men in France (79.2 years) and women in France (85.3 years) . And if we can get some insight as to why, we can do something about it. I poked around some more. Early diagnosis and treatment, I’m sure we all agree, is a good idea. But a number of studies quoted by the MHF , demonstrate interconnecting issues that have a negative effect on early diagnosis and treatment for men. 1. On average, men are less knowledgeable about symptoms that they should report and have a poorer understanding of their medicines. 2. Men are less likely than women to acknowledge that they are ill or to seek help when sick. 3. Men are not good at speaking about their mental health. But what I think is great about each of the conclusions of these studies is that a small change can make a difference and you can do it today!! You have the power!!

nTRÉDɢrSÉM}vRo˙UJvÉ

I think by now we all know we should be eating our 5 a day, quitting the ciggies, limiting our alcohol units and moving more - and it is no longer my job to nag – but here are a few suggestions to improve what they call ‘health literacy’ for anyone with a Y chromosome. Older boys and young men – teach your boys to check their balls for bumps (testicular cancer is most common in late 20’s – early 30’s) or that you encourage them to speak about their feelings while you simply listen and support (male suicide is three times that of female suicide in the UK and France). You could look up the ‘Man Manual’ online which focuses on all aspects men’s health, it’s free to read and presented in a similar format to the DSM online. Or book yourself a bloodpressure check. Or read the patient information leaflet for your medication. None of these things take much time at all, and you never know what good it could do. So, it’s over to you - What will YOU do differently this Men’s Health Week? Sue.

PS. Did you know that you can get all Patient Information Leaflets for your meds in English here? https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc#gref

Therapeutic animal assistance with alpacas imagine most people have Ianimals. heard of therapy or assistance You probably think of a dog, something small and fluffy, but perhaps not an alpaca? It’s time to talk about working with these magnificent creatures in a therapeutic setting.

Spending time with animals has been proven to improve both physical and emotional health in so many studies. Knowing this and seeing our herd of alpacas naturally acting in a careful and caring way towards more vulnerable people, I wanted to explore, understand and try to enhance this experience. Why have I invested in this project? My previous career was in social housing, including years in supported housing. Whilst I do not miss the corporate world, I have not lost the passion for working with vulnerable people in the community; those who were victims of domestic abuse, homeless, older, living with learning disabilities or mental health issues. I realised I could seek that rewarding work still in my new life in France at our alpaca farm. I’ve recently undertaken specialist training in working with alpacas and llamas in animal assisted interventions. Completing various courses before in alpaca husbandry, handling and breeding, I was amazed at how much more could be learned and really just how intelligent they are; whilst I adored them before I’d even first touched one, I don’t think I’d ever given them enough credit for their intuitiveness until now.

˙S}R]ÉHPÉÉ

building on the relationship between us and each individual alpaca. I have been left completely speechless when guiding clients and alpacas through a wellbeing session, witnessing connections made between them is such a special moment that I never expected. We have seen children with ADHD being able to fully concentrate on the moment, achieve tasks set for them and remain completely calm in the hour long session. A non-verbal client truly bonded with an alpaca, and when it came to leaving the field, both stayed beside each other by the field gate. And, one of our alpacas who does not enjoy being stroked, happily stood whilst having her neck rubbed. Our ethos on our farm is for mutual benefits to be had and recognisable by both people and animals; neither human or alpacas are made to do something they do not want to. The techniques used during these sessions are non-invasive, with alpacas and people having free movement in the fields, meaning escape is always a choice fior all concerned. I believe the benefits of our wellbeing sessions are well beyond my imagination and I hope this can inspire any child or adult, especially those living with depression, anxiety, physical or mental illnesses or special needs to take time for themselves, and consider a wellbeing session at the farm with me and the alpacas. For more information, contact Sophie via her web page www.lapetitefermedalpagas.com

One of the most important aspects of this work is understanding behaviours in both alpacas and people so, by tuning into these, we can start to acknowledge each other and really communicate. Easier said than done when humans are the only creatures on the planet who verbalise behaviours, creating a universe unknown to the rest of the animal world! An important lesson I learned on this journey, which seems so obvious now, is that not all alpacas will be suitable for animal assistance settings. It’s essential to know your animals, their behaviours and how to work with them before embarking on something like this - or you could do more harm than good. Just as important is trust between the handler and the animal; something I have been working on since the herd arrived on our farm, we’re constantly
