Last month Mesa experienced severe weather, that caused property damage to many homes within Dobson Ranch. It also affected the Association common areas, surrounding businesses, City of Mesa streets and parks.

Community Association Institute suggests the follow for emergency procedures: If your property has been damaged in a natural disaster—hurricane, tornado, flood, earthquake or fire—there are some important steps you can take in the immediate aftermath to ensure your safety and minimize financial loss. Consider the following actions: Enter with caution. Damaged homes or buildings could be structurally unsafe; use extreme caution when navigating those areas, and don’t enter unless absolutely necessary.

Debris and other hazards are unsafe.

Secure the property. In cases of significant structural damage or security concerns, determine whether the damaged area needs to be secured with temporary fencing or another type of barrier to keep out unwanted guests.

Notify your insurer. Call your insurance company to inform them there’s been a disaster and to file an official claim. Take down the claim number and any relevant contact information for whomever will handle your claim. If your vehicle sustained damage, contact your automobile insurer.

Notify utility companies. If property damage includes disruption to water, gas or electric utilities, contact the companies right away to shut off service. Failing to do so could pose a safety risk to you or emergency responders in and around the disaster area.

Take photos of the damage. Beginning with the property’s exterior, take photographs of the damage. If it’s safe to enter the structure, take photographs of interior damage as well.

These will come in handy for insurance purposes.

Take inventory of your damaged belongings. Make a list of your damaged personal items and ensure you have photographs. Include the price of large appliances or valuable items with your list and, if possible, surviving receipts.

September Is National Preparedness Month and September 15 is National “Prepareathon” Day when people and communities across the nation take action to prepare for and protect themselves against disasters. The City of Mesa is offering classes to help you prepare. For more information go to http://www.mesaaz.gov/residents/emergency. To find out more about year-round “Prepareathon” activities, go to www.ready.gov/prepare.

The City of Mesa wants to keep you informed of any disaster within Mesa. During a disaster, residents and visitors in the Mesa area are advised to visit www.Mesaaz.gov or tune to Mesa Channel 11 or local radio and television stations for information.

After the severe weather in August staff quickly cleaned up streets and common areas.

There is still remaining damage that staff is addressing. We hope to have it all fixed by the time you read this article.

Staff installed a new gate at Kavanaugh Park last month. The maintenance staff made the gate on site here at Dobson Ranch. The gate will remain unlocked until the fob system comes online October 15. So, to access this park or any common areas after October 15, you will need to pick up a fob. We are having two events for distributing the fobs. Please come to La Casita on September 30 between 10am and 2pm or October 5th between 5:30pm and 7:30pm.

The staff also installed lights at Los Altos Recreation Center parking lot. These lights are LED and use half the electricity of what was used before. Less electricity does not mean, however, low lighting. These lights are brighter than previous lights.

There’s a lot going on in Dobson Ranch: events, renovations, clean up and more. Staff is getting ready for the annual Dobson Ranch Golf Tournament (September 23) Fishing Tournament (October 7), Halloween (October 20), Fall Festival (November 18), Winter Wonderland (December 2), Boat Parade (December 2), Breakfast with Santa (December 9), renovations to Lake 1 seawall (starting in December), new patio at La Casita (starting next year) and much more.

I called the August 17, 2017 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Here’s a recap…

The first item of business was my President’s Report…I am honored to have been appointed to the Imagine Mesa Advisory Committee, which the City of Mesa has initiated. The Committee is looking at the future of Mesa…imagine Mesa in the future. Feedback is being elicited from residents throughout the City; feedback on residents’ vision of the future of Mesa based on the following five categories: innovation, work, home, green future, and play. What do you want Mesa to be? Special guest speaker from the City of Mesa, Merry Bevill, presented information on the Committee as well as ways to give feedback through social media (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat). Ideas which have poured in are available on the Committees’ site neighborland.com/imaginemesa; each idea has a “me too” button next to it allowing visitors to “like” their neighbors idea and lend support. Thank you Merry for joining us. Please take a moment to share your vision for the future of Mesa; the Committee is taking feedback through October 31, 2017.

Under “Unfinished Business” the Board had further discussions on the repurposing of the La Casita volleyball court. It was moved to approve repurposing this area making it into a patio with work to begin early 2018. The patio will include dedication bricks which will be available for purchase. Various similar dedication and memorial programs have been in place on the Ranch over the years; rose bush dedications and memorial trees have been hugely popular. Our award winning rose garden has run out of space and tree memorials have long been discontinued. There is a demand for a like program…the bricks will serve to meet this demand, while creating an interesting element for the patio, as well as help fund the repurposing of the area. Please see page 2 for a diagram of the area.

Master Planning Projects The committee has a number of projects that will soon be ready to proceed: La Casita Volleyball Court ConversionThis area in front of the offices has been unused for months. Since the net broke almost two years ago, there has not been a request to replace the net.

The committee proposes to convert the volleyball field to a picnic area with bandstand. The bandstand will be at the south end, with five picnic tables spaced throughout, along a concrete walkway. The remainder would be covered by artificial grass. We envisioned 3 sail-shaped fabric shades to cover the area, and to be a visual focus. See attached drawings.

The walkway will have memorial bricks placed on the ground, available for purchase at $65 each. Several years ago, the Association offered homeowners to purchase roses in dedication to friends and family. They were planted at Baseline and Dobson, but the Rose Garden is now full and no more dedications are available. If the walkway bricks totally sell out, in the future, they will gross over $200K, which would leave a profit of about $61K over our cost estimate of $138.6K for the picnic area.

The hope is that this will be a focal point for our main office area, and that it will be useful for Association events or by homeowners.

Meeting Room at Los Altos or SaratogaSaratoga recreation area has a small meeting room, which is used by ranch clubs, for events and by parents who want to stay cool while their kids swim in the pool. It has bathrooms needing refurbishing (outside of the room) and a microwave oven in a storage area behind the recreation office. It could use refurbishing, including a higher ceiling and consolidation of the amenities to one area.

Los Altos has 2 pools, including the junior Olympic size pool, and bathrooms outside the recreation office. We have a concept drawing for a meeting room that would house about 50 people. This would allow us to fit within city planning guidelines for parking spaces without adding any to the existing lot. The meeting room would be located between the pools, and would have glass walls with a view of Lake 1, while also providing visibility to both pools.

The bathrooms could be attached, and basketball and tennis courts would be untouched.

The committee would like your feedback on whether a meeting room at Saratoga or Los Altos would be more useful to our homeowners. Please direct any comments to the Association office by emailing to contact@DobsonRanch.com.

Lake 3 & 4 FountainsWe already have fountains on Lake 1 (Los Altos) and Lake 2 (east side of 2 THE DOBSON ASSOCIATION

Dobson). To enhance the curb appeal of the ranch, we’ve proposed adding fountains at Lake 3 (behind Macayo’s) and Lake 4 (at the Rose Garden, south of Baseline) . These will all be visible from Dobson Road, and will cost $22K. Current fountains can be seen at Lake 1, Lake 2 (both at Dobson Road and Isabella Street) and Lake 7 (on Keating west of Playa).

Laguna Park RestroomsIt has been suggested that our biggest park, Laguna, should have permanent restrooms. We have determined that the most logical place for them would be midway between homeowners near the street. This would minimize the sewer connection run, and would minimize any homeowner concern over noise, etc. The plan would eliminate the need to rent portable facilities for the annual events held there, like Halloween, Easter, movie night, etc. Social media comments on Dobson Ranch have been positive about the park, but note the lack of restrooms . This lack appears to limit the usefulness of the park daily.

The restroom envisioned would have two unisex toilets, accessible only by key fob or swipe access via cell phone app. This would limit use to only residents and their guests, discouraging any transient traffic.

Healthy Lakes

Your Neighborhood

Some of the best water around is used to keep the lakes of Dobson Ranch healthy. Most of the water comes from the Salt River via canals.

The remaining water comes from passing storms. And it can come in a flash, with thunder.

The water that comes from the Salt River is not filtered or treated and is called raw water. It can contain all manner of debris that washes down from the Tonto National Forest. The water is drawn off the Salt River at the Granite Reef Dam and passes through a series of canals to reach a valve that diverts water to our Lake 1. Along the way the water passes through screens designed to remove the big junk floating along with the water.

These screens do not filter out the small stuff or the fish that got into the canal.

The other source of water for the lakes are the passing storms. This storm water either falls directly on the lakes or runs-off the nearby streets and yards, through storm drains or scuppers and into each lake at several different locations. This storm water is for the most part clean with only minor contamination from spilt oils, chemicals and fertilizer residue. One contaminate is brake dust from cars and trucks. This dust accumulates on our streets until it rains and is then washed into the lakes where it mostly settles to the bottom.

If we do not keep our yards and streets clean, the big debris - the plastic bags, cups and bottles - must be manually removed by the Ranch staff. The biggest pollutant though, is the biological material deposited by the waterfowl that visit our lakes. This is a somewhat natural part of healthy lakes if there are not too many waterfowl visiting and if they are not fed. Only when their numbers increase are they of concern.

Fish also populate our lakes to help keep the lakes clean and healthy. Their job is to control the weeds that would otherwise choke the lakes. Fish, the first part of the word “fishing”, also provide a recreational asset to Dobson Ranch. This coming October 7th the Dobson Ranch Recreation Department along with the Fishing Club, will be highlighting sport fishing as part of the Fall Expo. Join them at the Los Altos Recreation Center for a fun time on the lakes and learn how we keep our lakes healthy. Remember, water makes living in the desert possible - make the best of it.

HOLIDAY HOURS Administration and Recreation will be closed for Veterans Day on Friday November 10, 2017, and will also be closed on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 for Thanksgiving.

FOBS AVAILABLE BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 30, 2017 Keyless entry fobs will replace keys at Dobson Ranch common areas. Dobson Ranch homeowners or the designated agent can receive either two fobs or one fob and one smart phone app for the new keyless system replacing homeowner keys, starting September 30, 2017. Additional fobs will be $10 each.

Fobs will be issued at the following events: Saturday September 30th from 10am – 2pm and Thursday October 5th from 5:30pm – 7:30pm at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes, Mesa, AZ 85202 in the Grande Room.

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2017. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

The next quarterly payment is due October 1, 2017

There are several options for paying your assessments: There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association Administration or Recreation departments. Please be sure to include your account number when remitting your payment. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and one-time payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www. dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Once logged in, select the one-time payment or auto payment option. If setting up automatic recurring payments, click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you have set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2017.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

National Good Neighbor Day Good Neighbor Award We are so thankful we live next door to the kindest man ever. He is available to help any time the need arises. This past week during the storm we had a large branch of one of our trees came down. He came out and looked at the damage and proceeded to help clean up. He went and purchased a saw to cut down the rest of the tree, cut it into pieces, found a trailer and hauled it to the landfill. Whenever we encounter a computer problem he is there to solve it for us with patience and understanding.

He is there for the elderly lady on the other side of his house to hang her Christmas tree lights, put her flag up on holidays and to take her to the grocery store any time. He requires no payment only a sincere thank you.

His life outside the neighborhood also reflects his kindness and giving. He coaches a young kids hockey team. He seems to be available to all of his friends when they need help or assistance or just to be a companion.

Bless his heart...He is the best! His name is Terry Willette.

Hello Dobson Ranch Residents! I can’t believe it is officially fall. Time flies when you are having so much fun! We have an October full of events again this year.

First, we are calling all you fishermen, the Fishing Derby and Outdoor Expo on Saturday, October 7th at 7am at Los Altos. I want to send a special thanks to the fishing club for helping run this great event. October events do not stop there...our Garage Sale, Clean Up and Shred is on Saturday, October 14th. It’s time for some Fall cleaning so if you are interested in participating in the garage sale this year, please contact Donna @ 480-831-8314. You can also bring all of those papers that have been piling up in your home to Saratoga parking lot to have them shredded (paper clips and staples ok). The clean-up location will be at Los Altos parking lot. Please keep in mind that residents are responsible for loading and unloading their own material. Don’t forget about another great October event! Before you know it school will be on break and your children and grandchildren will be looking for things to do during fall break. We are offering a Fall Break Camp for ages 6-12 year old’s Monday-Friday October 9-13th at Saratoga Recreation Center. Last, but not least, is our Halloween event coming up on Friday, October 20th. Carnival games, a pumpkin parade and movie in the park will all be a part of the “Howlin’ Good Halloween Night”. We hope you all will come out to Laguna Park and enjoy the family fun.

Cooler Times Coming for DR Pickleball

Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info

Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability.

Recreation Committee Pickleball Representative

Fall temperatures are sneaking into the Valley and DR Pickleball attendance will soon be picking up as winter visitors begin their annual migration, and our summer escape artists come home to roost. Regular drop-in play continues on Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 7am and Tuesday evening at 7pm. Evening play on Monday and Thursday at 6:30 is also available, with a focus on beginning and intermediate players. Saturday morning is the best time for beginners to come out and get acquainted with the game with instruction from veteran players, although Tuesday evenings at 7pm is another option.

Remember, our Los Altos Courts are provided by the Dobson Association for members and their guests, and playing time is not limited to our published group-play hours. The courts are available to any resident with a key between the hours of 7 am and 10 pm every day of the week. Another great benefit of homeownership in Dobson Ranch!

Boat Permits and Fishing License Information It’s always a great time for fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch.

Fishing licenses are required (catch and release PLE only) and boat permits are required for all EXAM watercraft (size restrictions apply). Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four). Children 7 years and up require a license. For more information, please call the recreation department at 480-831-7464.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center.

A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. If a rental request is within 10 business days there will be an expedited fee 2 times the rental amount. Reservations can be made at the La Casita Recreation Center and include a 14 day cancellation policy.

Well here it is the beginning of fall, it would be great if the weather would recognize that.

The kids are back at school and us retirees are coming home to our Dobson Ranch activities. Hiking and biking begin in Oct and with all our other activities we will be busy again. As always, we will be doing our men’s breakfast, ladies lunch, happy hour, dinner night, movie day, game date, day trippers and planning of other events.

By other events I mean pancake breakfast, Oktoberfest, Spooktacular and others. We are very active in our Dobson community.

We do need some help, more volunteers. We appreciate all our volunteers very much and can’t thank them enough for all their help but we seem to have the same people every month. We need someone to take over our picnic once a month and help with our general meeting lunches. We don’t care if you are male or female all volunteers are welcome and very appreciated.

If you have any ideas about speakers for our general meeting please submit them to Kevin or to Lucille Wilgale so we can submit them to the board for approval. For an example: Emergency preparedness, Library programs, etc. We appreciate all that you submit and if you can only do something once a year it is still important to be part of the club and to help promote it.

The BIG NEWS is the upcoming Fishing Derby/Outdoor Expo at Lake 1 on October 7. It starts at 7am. There are free goodie bags for all kids and prizes given out every half hour. There are numerous vendors and other activities. The Dobson Ranch Fish Club is setting up a gigantic fishing tank for the little ones- filled with bluegill. We supply the rods. It is always a hit!

The bigger kids fish in the big lake. Arizona Game &Fish provides us with nice loaner rods for the lake fishing. Last year we had about 90 children participating. This year we look to break the hundred mark!

Have you noticed all the activity at the water surface of our lakes? You will see numerous small schools of baitfish rippling the water surface eating bugs including white flies. The dragon flies had a substantial hatch this summer. I see five different species flying around, but the small orange ones are the most prominent. Dragonflies actually live the first part of their lives under water as nymphs, then emerge as adults.

Fishing has been good, even for the dog days of summer. We are catching them on various lures and plastics, although the topwater bite has been mostly shut down. Dropshot, shakey head, and Texas rig presentations remain the best. Crankbaits may be good at the right time, as well as swim baits. There has been a bite during different times of the day almost all summer long, even under the hot sun. But you have to time it right, because it could be really good or really bad fishing.

Garden Club Tuesday, October 3, 2017 7:00 pm at La Casita Featured Speaker: Richard Adkins, Phoenix’s urban forestry expert The August monsoon storm has Ranch residents thinking about trees more than usual.

Perhaps you had a tree destroyed in the storm that needs replacing or you are ready to update your landscape. To learn what species tree to plant, where to plant it and how to plant it, come to the Tuesday, October 3 Garden Club meeting. The meeting, open to all Ranch residents and their guests, will be held at 7:00 p.m. at La Casita.

Richard Adkins, Phoenix’s urban forestry expert, is the featured speaker. Phoenix maintains an inventory of more than 90,000 trees, palms and tall cactuses in its parks and along its streets. These trees add to quality of life by improving air quality, storm water management, energy savings, shade and aesthetics. As a part of his presentation, Adkins will address Sustainable Landscape Management Techniques and the value of trees to the community.

Handouts and reference sources for all aspects of trees---from selecting the right tree for the right spot, to proper planting to pruning ---will be available at the meeting.

Arizona summers like to go out with a bang, bringing us monsoon storms and haboobs. Even if a pet has lived in Arizona for several years, anxiety levels can change from storm to storm. How do we help our furbabies when the monsoon rolls through?

• Keep your pets indoors!! If left alone outside, chances are great that your pet will try to escape the yard trying to look for a safe place to hide.

• Try to make a ‘safe space’ in your house to help keep your pet calm.

It is important not to confine them however, anxiety levels may increase if pets feel trapped.

• Make sure your pets wear a collar that is properly sized and have identification tags with current information.

• Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal spore more commonly known as Valley Fever. It is contained in dirt and dust and transmitted to pets when it is inhaled. Valley fever can cause coughing, difficulty breathing, masses in the skin or bone and even seizures. If you begin to notice any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian.

• We all know how humid it can be following a monsoon rain and it seems to bring the mosquitoes out in droves. Mosquitoes are carriers of deadly heartworm disease and if your pet is not on a monthly heartworm preventative, they are at risk.

The Dobson Association Will Be Represented in the East Valley Veterans Parade This year, the East Valley Veterans Parade Association will have their annual Veterans Day parade on Saturday, November 11 at 11:00 am, and Dobson Ranch will participate by entering a float.

The parade starts on Center St. and University Dr. in Mesa and runs South on Center St. to 1st St. It then turns west onto 1st St. and continues to Robson. The map is available at http://evvp.org/parade-routemap/.
