Welcome to summer! Just when I was thinking, wow it is hot, the monsoons seem to have started and are bringing in a welcomed overcast and a few sprinkles of rain. With the winds come debris; take a moment to check out your property and perform some preventative landscape maintenance, your neighbors and the Association will thank you. The Association frequently hears from homeowners this time of year regarding all of the debris blowing throughout the neighborhood; especially the pesky palm tree debris. Now is the season to trim palm trees, take a look at your palm trees, do they need trimming? Our documents require removal of dead brown fronds, typically this is performed approximately once every year.

Our Code Compliance department is busy at work, one particular concern to staff and residents alike are the endless abundance of block walls and gates throughout the community. These are addressed through our documents. Please take a moment to preemptively evaluate your block walls and gates – are they in good repair, could they use sprucing up? If so, please submit an Architectural Review form to our Architectural Committee for any changes. Thank you for taking a moment to be proactive and keep our community looking outstanding!

This week the Association was presented with a “thank you” plaque from the Tempe Junior Crew, rowing team. Their crew won 5th in the nation this year. The plaque given to the Association has engraved, “Thank you for saving our season!”. What a nice, surprise, thank you to receive; they were grateful for the use of our lakes while Tempe Town Lake was being drained for maintenance.

Though it is July, so it is hard for me to think about, the new school year is quickly approaching. Back to school movie night is August 12 at 6:30 pm. This is a relatively new event, started last summer, we hope for it to be a popular an annual event. It was well received last year, come out and join the fun this year and enjoy free popcorn and the movie The Good Dinosaur. Many new ideas for events come straight from our residents, one such new event, which will be in January, is a “polar plunge”. This popular event takes place in many communities all over and we are excited to bring one here to Dobson Ranch.

Look for details in future Roundups and make plans to attend so you could see our Board President, Frank Mizner, take the plunge possibly with other members of the Board. Do you have event ideas? Contact our front desk or recreation department, we would love to hear from you.

I called the June 16, 2016 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Here’s a recap…

I gave the President’s report, reporting that staff has been busy with events, summer camp, committees and everyday business. Staff is working on an electric and water audit; evaluating if City of Mesa and SRP meters servicing Association common areas are being utilized or if any can be eliminated.

They are also looking at combining areas to reduce the monthly cost of having a meter.

Staff has been cleaning up areas around the Ranch where there have been piles of landscape debris left by a third party. The culprit has abandoned large piles of debris on the street in locations that are not in front of homes; thus far staff has cleaned up four locations.

Staff has attended legal briefings on the new State of Arizona law update that will go into effect in August. Staff will inform us next month on what policies of ours will need to be changed.

The Association received information from St. Timothy’s Church, they plan on having Food Truck Friday’s, kicking off in September going through May, the third Friday of the month from 5:30 to 7 pm. They plan on having 7 to 8 trucks for each event. They are requesting special event permits from the City of Mesa and asked for the Association’s support. I signed a letter documenting our support of their plan.

We look forward to more information to come from St. Timothy’s Church.

Lastly, I reported that I asked staff to create an Executive Director plaque to recognize past and current Executive Directors; these are the folks who have managed our staff, overseen our finances, and in general have done a lot to keep Dobson Ranch in the shape it is in, I felt it was important to recognize them. I asked past Directors to come to our meeting to be recognized. Our first Executive Director, Charles Kenny was hired by the developer in 1973, in 1982 the Board itself hired Dale Douglas. Mr. Douglas was our Executive Director for nearly 20 years through 2001. Dale had a great care for Dobson Ranch. Dale established the financial procedures and policies that have led to the Association having a sound financial position; secondly, Dale is responsible for the La Casita facility that continues to serve us today. Dale joined us and spoke regarding his employment at Dobson Ranch; recounting when La Casita was built, his appreciation of the sense of community that is particular to Dobson Ranch, his regard for the community in general and his time served as Executive Director. Dale thanked us for the invitation and the recognition.

Under “New Business” Board of Directors Committee liaisons were approved; recognizing all of the Members willing to give their time to these committees, notably Board of Director Ron Magaw who has chaired the Water Management Committee since 1993, thanks Ron! Next on the agenda, the Board heard a sponsorship request for a Fun Run / Glow Run on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Dobson Ranch Golf Course. This item will be on the agenda again in July. Following, Gordon Sheffield presented information from the City of Mesa on signage and details on how the sign code is being updated.

The Board of Director Policy Document and the Reserve Study were both agenda items reviewed.

It’s a hundred and umpteen degrees outside and hot has turned into HOT! So what do you do on those scorching, blistering HOT days without breaking the budget?

It’s always a great time to make a big splash in one the cool refreshing pools at Dobson Ranch. There is a pool at the Saratoga Rec Center, 2345 S. Saratoga, two pools at the Los Altos Rec Center, 2524 W. Campo Alegre, and the pool and splash pad at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes. We offer Water Aerobics and Aqua Zuma classes for the adults and there is still time to get the kids in swim lessons before the season is over. Pools provide summer fun for everyone and a place for families and friends to go for an outing.

If you would like to stay dry, there are plenty of other activities along with some in the air conditioned recreation facilities at Dobson Ranch. For the adults there is Tai Chi, Yoga, Poker, Bunco, Bridge, Zumba, Fitness in the Park, tennis and pickleball. Some of our clubs still meet in the summer months also. To keep the kids entertained there are dance classes, tennis classes and a few more weeks of Summer Camp. Check out the summer camp pictures starting on page -- to see how much fun the kids have been having.

Even though summer is winding down… the fun is still going strong at Dobson Ranch! Bring the whole gang to enjoy free popcorn and an indoor movie on August 12 at 6:30 pm. The Good Dinosaur will be showing.

Who says you have to get out of town, or spend a bundle, to have a good time? Whether you prefer to be indoors or out, we have many ideas to keep you busy! So before your family has a chance to say, “I’m sooo booored”, grab your shades and sunblock and live it up this summer at Dobson Ranch!

Things to Know Board Meeting Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? You can do all that at Dobson Association Board of Directors meetings. Meetings are held on the third Thursday at 7 pm at La Casita in the Grande room.

Board of Directors Adopt Amended Documents Amended versions of the Residential Architectural Guidelines and the Bylaws were adopted by the Dobson Association Board of Directors, on March 17, 2016. These documents may be viewed on the website, dobsonranch.com, or may be picked up at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes, 85202. The Amended Residential Architectural Guidelines enforcement began July 1, 2016.

Common Area Guidelines were adopted by the Dobson Association Board of Directors, on May 19, 2016.

2016 Assessments

Your Neighborhood

In a continued effort to maintain an affordable assessment while preserving our maturing community, the Board of Directors has voted to not increase the 2016 Assessments. Therefore; the rates will remain at, $138.60 quarterly, $277.20 semi-annually, and $554.40 annually.

Assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $30 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter. Delinquent interest will accrue on any unpaid balance.

As a reminder, there are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Check payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association office. Coupons need to accompany mailed or dropped payments. Cash, debit or credit card payments are accepted in the Association office. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone.

Monthly payment is not an option through the mail or drop off.

3. Automatic monthly payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranch.com) using your bank card, credit card or e-check. Scroll down and click on the “Assessment Payment Portal”, set up a New User Account or login if you are a returning user , click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes. If you are setup on recurring payments through the Washington Federal/ Rentpayment site, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2016.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay. You will have to set up the payment through the bill pay program with your bank. Please reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

Good Neighbor Award If you have walked, biked or driven the streets of Dobson Ranch, it’s certain you’ve seen Pam, a Dobson resident, walking the ranch clad with her earphones and a small trash bag, picking up any litter she might come upon. I’d like to take this time to recognize and thank Pam for her faithfulness and tenacity to help keep our community litter free. Dobson Ranch is all the more beautiful because of her willingness to go the extra mile. I’ve lived on the ranch many years and I can’t remember a time when I didn’t see her on her daily walks and her small bag of litter. Thanks Pam. She tells me she has lived on our ranch for 42 plus years. She certainly has invested her time well for us all. We have all benefited from her faithfulness and service.

High Heat in the Desert

Another summer of discontent. It generally happens at about this time of year, maybe sooner than expected this year, but to all comes the realization that living in the desert means living with high heat. The Sonoran Desert can get hot, but it is not one of those deserts that makes living with the heat impossible. It is not the Kalahari.

In fact, we have been surviving quite nicely with all the amenities that help desert dwellers dwell. Our streets are paved, not patches of asphalt between pot holes, the air is fairly clear given the famed Arizona road dust and water is there when we want it. The foresight of those who lived here before air conditioning was the norm, made sure we had the water.

We appreciate those who created the Salt River Users Association and the Central Arizona Project that brings us water from distant places to sustain our daily lives. Roosevelt Dam and its lake and distribution system are working just fine; Lake Roosevelt stands at 54% of capacity. The Colorado River is another story and that may soon pose a problem.

There is a change in our desert if you have not noticed. No, it is not the greater number of people seeking to try our desert life style; they are also effected. There has been a change in the heat in our part of the desert. One can easily keep informed of the high temperatures we experience; it is hard to avoid knowing how many days the maximum air temperature has exceed 100ºF (118 days on average).

Over the last 20 years, the maximum temperature has reached 118ºF several times. How low the temperature drops each night, i.e., the highest low temperature for the year has risen from somewhere in the 80ºF range to somewhere in the 90ºF range over that same period.

This is the new heat in the desert.

Guess what this does to your water consumption? For those with high landscape water demands, it means more water is needed to keep their landscape healthy; more water to make up for the extra evaporation at night. All the more reason to look closely at the individual irrigation system components. I just noticed one of my drip lines was slow in watering some bushes; one of the drip heads had been pulled out. This reduced the pressure in the drip line slowing the water flow from each drip head. One bush did benefit, but almost drowned from the excess water. Close inspection is needed weekly to find those errant leaks that can mess up a garden.

Remember, water makes living in the desert possible - make the best of it.

Block Watch Kiowa/Lindner/Standage Meeting June 4, 2016

The Kiowa Avenue Block Watch held their quarterly meeting at the Dobson Restaurant on Saturday June 4th, 2016. The Block Watch has been active the last two years and worked with various City/State and the Dobson HOA regarding public safety and questions regarding City services.

This quarter Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh attended and conducted a question and answer forum regarding resident concerns and issues which pertained to neighborhood traffic, city plans for the Golf Course fencing, ways to become an active participant in the “100� Club, and future city initiatives.

Eric Guderian from the City of Mesa Transportation Department spoke about recent traffic improvements made by the City on Lindner and Kiowa signage. In addition, Eric provided and discussed the recent Kiowa Avenue traffic study requested by the Block Watch.

Lieutenant James McCormick from Mesa PD presented and discussed the latest crime statistics and answered questions regarding how the Community can assist in deterring crime.

The Block Watch has been successful in addressing public safety issues and encourages other residences to set up and maintain Block Watch initiatives. Green Thumb Awards

Summer temperatures are soaring and many plants have faded in vigor and beauty. But not the front landscape at 1716 S. Catarina… it is thriving in our summer heat! At the center is a Magnolia Grandiflora. Magnolias are famous for large billowing white blossoms and a wonderfully aromatic, fragrant smell that come with them. Near the carport is a blooming Bougainvillea. Bougainvillea are popular low-water-use plants that provide lots of color. This front yard seems to be singing merrily along through the mid-summer heat and is another reason Dobson Ranch is a beautiful place to live!

Summer Pests

It’s been triple digits for weeks and many residents have sought cooler climates. It’s so hot outside that all the pests are gone too… right? Wrong! Many pests are still active during the hot summer months. These pests may include: ants, cockroaches, crickets, flies, mosquitos, termites, scorpions, rodents, roof rats and more.

When it comes to summer pests, it’s good to take a preventative approach and make our homes less attractive to them. Now that the weather is in the triple digits, come out and enjoy your community pools and splash pad! Swimming is great exercise and being submerged in water is a super way to stay cool! Just a reminder that our new summer hours run from Now – September 4th. We are open Monday-Friday 8am-9pm, Saturday 8am-9pm and Sunday 9am-8pm (Closed Holiday July 4th and September 5th). Our summer camp is in full swing and we are still accepting registrations if you are interested. Camp is held at La Casita and will run through August 5th. Camp fun is Monday- Friday 7:30am-5:30pm. We do have a 5-week camp option July 5th-August 5th and 1 week options available as well. Please see our ad in this month’s issue of the Ranchers’ Roundup for more information or call La Casita at 480-831-7464. For all you ice cream enthusiasts, come out and join us for our Ice Cream Social and Water Fun Day on Friday, July 15th 6pm until we run out. Bring your whole family out for a great time! For all you movie buffs out there we will be having a Back to school movie at La Casita on Friday, August 12th. We will be showing “The Good Dinosaur” To say farewell to summer vacation. Aqua Zumba is classic aqua aerobics with Latin flavor added to regular Zumba routines. The typical land-based Zumba dance steps, such as cha-cha, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, and mambo, are exaggerated and slower in water, so the water tempo is half the land tempo, creating a low-impact work out for all fitness levels. Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community.

The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table.

Adult tennis Dobson Ranch offers a full-range of programs and playing opportunities for ages 16 plus and ability levels. These classes introduce you to the elements of tennis with a quality instructor to ensure a positive, successful and fun experience.

Adult Learn to Play These 5 week classes, will introduce the social aspect of the game when groups of players come together to learn at the same time. To teach the skills of tennis to a class, tennis group drills have been formulated. These drills are meant to be fun and entertaining while also developing the skills of each participating player drills!

Summer is here along with the heroic tales of overhead smashes, and alluring baseline drop outs.

Tennis camps across the country are in full effect with junior players preparing ground strokes, and high flying serves.

Our program at Dobson Ranch Tennis Academy is no different, sure we don’t possess the star power of having ten (10) coaches on staff but what we do have is a positive environment full of action packed excitement and challenges to keep your junior player moving and grooving.

Shaping young minds and teaching honesty through sportsmanship is our main goal and teaching kids of all ages quick start tennis with the simple premise “You can learn the game of tennis, and have fun in the process”.

Tennis isn’t hard to learn; most times we tell ourselves we can’t learn something new because other’s in your circle have voiced those sentiments. Your body may not be as athletic or conditioned as you would like but your mind is the key to success in any attainable goal. So get out of your way and learn something new be it Tennis or Pickleball.

Boat and Fishing Information

The weather is heating up and it’s a perfect time for ple outdoor activities, like fishing and boating at one of the exam beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply). 2016 licenses and permits went on sale ple m December 1, so stop by La Casita at 2719 South a x e Reyes to purchase them. Prices are the same as 2015. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four). Children 7 years and up require a license. For more information please call the recreation department at 480-831-8314.

Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Information A one-time “complimentary” pontoon ride per property is available to residents. Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. It’s almost time for the annual Dobson Ranch CLEANUP!

The Dobson Ranch softball team had another great season in the spring of 2016! The team ended up with a regular season record of 3-4 and, unfortunately, lost in the first game of the playoffs. They just started up their summer season and are looking forward to another fun (yet hot) season!

The team plays on Sunday evenings at Kiwanis park in Tempe, so come on out and show your support for the Dobson Ranch softball team and enjoy the outdoors while watching a fun and exciting team. Dobson Ranch Recreation Department is pleased to announce an Outdoor Day event on Saturday, October 1, 2016 from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Los Altos Recreation Center located at 2524 W. Campo Alegre, Mesa, Arizona, 85202.

We are inviting local outdoor-related companies, businesses and organizations to be part of our event. Fill out the information below to participate in this event. You will be contacted within a week of returning this form for confirmation.

General Guidelines for vendors in attendance:

Must qualify as an outdoor related vendor. Unless approved by Recreation dept.  A 10 x 10 space will be provided to each vendor. A table and 2 chairs will be provided. Pop-up tents allowed.  All vendors must have a representative on site at all times.  Vendors need to be setup and ready for participants by 6:45 a.m. and are expected to stay until 11 a.m.  A copy of your City of Mesa Tax Licenses is required, if you will be selling any products.  If applicable, the vendor fee is due in full two weeks prior to event date: September 17th .  A Maricopa County Health Permit is required, if a food product is being served to the public. 

Sun and Fun at Dobson Ranch Summer Camps

These hot summer days may be a great time to relax, but tell that to kids who are bouncing off the walls or sighing “I’m bored!” One of the best boredom busters around is summer camp. Over 80 kids attended Dobson Ranch summer camps with three different camps to keep the kids entertained: La Casita Summer Camp, Preschool Camp and Tennis Camp.

Each week the activities at La Casita Summer Camp are built around a special theme. Campers enjoy a structured environment featuring field trips, speakers, arts and crafts, active and quiet games, movies and pool time. A big shout out goes to the awesome camp counselors that keep things running smooth! There are still some La Casita Summer Camp openings. Howdy Ranchers, how is ole SOL treating you? Some safety tips for those of you driving. Please make sure that you have one gallon of water per person in your car. The danger of dehydration can take place in less than an hour in this heat. Just waiting for a tow truck, or AAA to fix a tire or battery failure can turn into a trip to the hospital. Be careful out there.

Even us desert rats are hiding in the shade wondering if we will break a new heat record this month. 122 is our all-time high. I remember it well as there were no commercial jets taking off because 120 was the highest testing for the planes of the day.

I remember it well as I worked out in this heat daily. 105 is OK but every 5˚ up from there starts to take its toll on a guy. Even the pool lost its charm, turning into a giant bath tub. The only thing that you could look forward to was a little breeze, even if it gave you a chill.

Men’s breakfast was a solid nine count this month, lots of talk about the pending election.

Game day was fun, we had 12 loyal soul’s playing cards, bunko, and some kind of tile game.

The Ladies had 24 show for a good time at The Elephant Bar. Two ladies celebrated their birthday. Jeanne and June. I made an appearance to surprise Jeanne with a nice flat of cake.

Walking the ranch is now a 4:30 AM thing due to the temps we are having. This also cuts our waking times down.

After visiting Canyon Lake last week, the beauty is almost as nice as Lake Powell. The water is cool and clear. The canyon walls exude many colors as the sun makes its way west, leaving us with another color show to take in. Fisherman come late and leave early, so the boat ramp stays busy all day. For those interested, I will be hosting a hike to Canyon this fall, a one way trip starting at First Water trail head.

The General meeting in August is on the first, Jean Duke is saying that the meal theme for the food is SALAD!!!! So the team will be providing you a good munch.

Wow. Record setting June heat. The water temps in our lakes are not unscathed. How do the fish survive? As of this writing, the water temp in our lakes was equivalent to the water temp in your pool- a bath tub toasty 90 degrees.

Blow wind, blow. You have read this before from me.

Our saving grace in our shallow lakes- about 8-foot deep- is the blowing wind. Fish kill in the hot summer months occurs because bacterial activity is elevated as algae grows and water temps are high.. Bacteria- like fishneed dissolved oxygen in the water to live. If there is not enough oxygen generated, the bacteria can consume the oxygen leaving levels so low that fish start “suffocating”. Fish have ruby red blood-filled gills to filter dissolved oxygen from the water, as they pass water through their gills. So blow, wind blow. The wind causes turbulence in our shallow lakes- creating the mixing of oxygen from the air into the water, resulting in dissolved oxygen. If we make it through June and early July into the monsoon season, there typically is enough wind in July and August- don’t we know- to oxygenate our lakes.

Fishing is fair. Early morning, or late in the day or at nighttime, is best.

Plastic worms or jigs fished slow serve as the best bet for bass. Reaction baits including crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and topwater for bass can still work, and you just have to be in the right feeding window. Catfish are feeding more actively than bass right now.

Please get your caught fish back into the lake immediately for successful catch and release. Fishing is still more fun than being in a chilled movie theatre!

RETIREES SCHEDULE GENERAL MEETING Our August General meeting will be one week later this Summer because of a conflict with the Summer Camp schedule at La Casita. We will meet on Monday, August 8th at La Casita. Coffee as usual at 9:30 AM with the meeting scheduled to begin at 10AM. Lunch to follow the meeting.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING The Retirees Board of Directors will meet on Monday, August 15th at 9AM at La Casita. For all Officers and committee chairs. No Board meeting in July.

LADIES LUNCH In July, the ladies will meet for lunch on Thursday, July 14th at Manuel’s at 11:30 AM. Monsoon season is quickly coming upon us Arizonians, which means the dust and dirt will be flying all around us.

It is during this time that many people contract valley fever but little do many pet owners know, our furbabies can contract this as well.

Valley fever is caused by inhaling dust or dirt that is contaminated with a fungus called Coccidioides. The fungus is inhaled into the lungs where it may simply cause a low grade chronic cough and mineralization of lymph nodes. Sometimes, if the immune system is weak, it can cause pneumonia or even spread throughout the pets body causing joint problems. If not treated appropriately, the fungus can also spread into internal organs and bones.

Should you notice your furbaby acting abnormal in anyway, please contact your Veterinarian and schedule a consult as soon as you can. As always, early detection is key to a successful treatment plan.

Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign The 10th Annual Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign from June 6 through September 16 provides supplies of water to people in need. The City of Mesa works with nonprofit agencies and businesses to collect the bottles of water which are distributed through United Food Bank to numerous agencies in the valley, including A New Leaf-East Valley Men’s Center, Paz de Cristo and Mesa United Way.
