I recently attended the United Food Bank’s kick off for the 11th Annual Mesa Hydration Donation, #MesaHydrates. Each year the City of Mesa works with non-profit agencies and businesses to provide people in need of water over the summer months. The goal is to reach 500,000 bottles from now till September 14, 2018.

This year’s kick off had many speakers, including Mayor John Giles. My favorite speaker was from the Eagle Scouts, Chandler Kleese. Chandler and the Eagle Scouts’ goal was to receive donations that would equal 20 pallets of water. He surpassed his goal and delivered 41 pallets of water, that’s 40 cases per pallet. Congratulations to him and his troop for setting the bar high. This is the third year that Dobson Ranch in participating is this great event. The past two years Dobson Ranch has been a donation location. Each year our donations have exceeded the previous year’s collections. I’m hoping that we will beat last year numbers of 5,568 bottles, 232 cases, almost six pallets. If you would like to donate, please drop off your case of water to the Dobson Ranch La Casita Center at 2719 S. Reyes, Mesa, Arizona.

There have been mixed comments on the fob system; some that don’t like it and others that want to know when the Association will be completing other areas. We recognize that to continue to improve the Association it is necessary for us to embrace technology. The need to put an end to non-residents and past residents access of Ranch amenities was one of the reasons the Master Planning committee decided several years ago to investigate the prospect of installing the Fob system. Now that the system is up and running, key fobs have been in high demand. Many of you have been picking up your fobs as the days have gotten hotter. An increase in attendance has been observed at all four pools, as well as, the splash pad. We are happy to see you out and about enjoying your community. If you are unsure about how the Fob system works, don’t fear, we will soon have a video on the Dobson Ranch website that will explain how you can obtain and use your new Fob.

The May 17, 2018 Open Session of the Dobson Association Board of Directors witnessed a continued increase in resident attendance. More importantly, the number of resident comments and the homeowner’s ability to speak prior to Board members voting shows that our homeowners are becoming more engaged in the affairs of the Association.

In keeping with an approach of genuineness, prior to each vote of the Board, Residents are invited to express their thoughts and ideas. This has led to more debate from Board members and better decision making through a policy of considering all input available.

As a result, participation in community affairs is growing. We see an increase in the Ad/Hoc Committee for Board Policy and interest in The Finance and Budget Committee. With supplementary homeowner input, the sense of community will grow. The next Open Session is scheduled for Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 7 pm at La Casita, plan to attend and meet your neighbors and your Board.

The hundred days of summer are upon us. However, the Ranch still has some upcoming events that will be fun to invite all family members…this includes all the grandchildren to the Ice Cream Social July 13 at 6:00 pm at La Casita. Don’t forget, the La Casita pool has a splash pad that is fun for children of all ages, including me!

Dobson Ranch features an amazing Summer Camp program for kids ages 6 -12 at the La Casita Recreation Center. The Camp has field trips, weekly themes and guest speakers. This summer camp is just another of the incredible amenities that Dobson Ranch offers its residents. THINGS TO KNOW BOARD MEETING Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? You can do all that at the Dobson Association Board of Directors meetings. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 7 pm at La Casita in the Grande room. The next date is June 21. FOBS ARE AVAILABLE Keyless entry fobs have replaced keys at Dobson Ranch common areas. Dobson Ranch homeowners or the designated agent can receive free of charge either two fobs or one fob and one smart phone app for the new keyless system. Visit dobsonranch.com to complete the Keyless System Agreement & Waiver form, or pick up a form at La Casita, prior to obtaining the fobs. Fobs will be available at La Casita Administration during normal business hours.

2018 Assessments

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2018. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

We are also excited to announce that our new Caliber software has officially been launched. Please note, your new coupons reflect your new account number. Please be sure to reference this new account number when sending in payments.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone.

Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and onetime payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site).

If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Please contact our office if you need assistance with setting up your payment.

If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2018.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

There are songs from the last century that evoke the hardship experienced by those who left their homes when the rains disappeared and the dust clouds came. Many took the Mother Road, Route 66, through Arizona to the Promised Land. Arizona probably looked just as dry as from whence they came. Times may have changed, but the songs they sang are still with us.

Arizona has adapted from that era; we now protect our water resources. Will we continue to adapt as nature responds to our changing climate? So far, the answer appears to be yes, we are changing our ways. When Dobson Ranch was just starting, water for irrigation was plentiful. You can see that in the way the fields of Dobson High are irrigated; flood irrigation. A more efficient means of irrigation was and is still employed on the Ranch; controlled drip lines to irrigate our plants and spray nozzles to water our lawns. The method of controlling that irrigation has also become more efficient. Just as significant an improvement in Ranch water conservation efforts has been the adoption of desert landscape practices.

Our community is 45 years old. Just look around; Dobson Ranch does not look that old. The old solar heaters are being replaced by solar arrays. That is not all, we are increasingly applying water efficient techniques in our homes. Each remodeling effort has and should include the installation of more water efficient appliances; toilets, dishwashers, etc.

Conserving energy is another way to help conserve resources.

Reducing what we are sending into the atmosphere is an important conservation technique. Water vapor used to be the major greenhouse gas controlling our climate. Now carbon-based gases are contributing and may soon predominate. To combat higher temperatures, we need to use less energy in our daily lives.

Improving the fuel efficiency of automobiles has and will continue to mitigate climate change. Using fewer plastic bottles is another.

Those strategies need to continue because they drive all our conservation efforts.

We are adapting to climate change - we know we need to conserve our natural resources including water lest our big dams no longer impound the water upon which we depend. Nature can be hard, but we shall overcome.

Welcome to the summer! Hope you are enjoying this “dry” heat. As your new treasurer, I will do my best to perform my fiduciary responsibilities to ensure proper financial management of the Association operations. I thank you, the homeowner, as well as the Board, in entrusting me with this major responsibility.

The Association exists because of you, the homeowner, and nearly 90% of the Association funding comes from your assessment payments. I am sure that like me, you desire your money to be spent wisely, getting good value for your expenditures. My desire is to regularly communicate to you, via the Rancher’s Roundup and Board Meetings, our financial well being as well as various pertinent financial issues of importance. I strongly believe in financial transparency and that the more informed you are, the more confidence you will have regarding the use of your funds.

At the time of this writing (late May), financial data through the end of April had been processed. If you attended the May 17th Board of Directors Meeting, you are aware that are current financial status is very strong. Here are just a few highlights. Cash on hand as of April 30, 2018 was in excess of five million dollars. Our Reserve Funds for replacing assets was in excess of 90% replacement value, meaning we have cash on-hand to fully fund the next four and onehalf years of asset replacement projects (note that 70% or three and one-half years is considered excellent for an HOA). Our Capital Project Fund is also fully funded. Lastly, through the first four months of 2018, we have added a net one hundred thousand dollars to our cash position and our Association’s net worth has increased a little over one hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars. Our financial status is incredibly stable and strong.

In future articles, I will address various financial items of interest and keep you informed of any decisions that have material impact to our financial status. So, stay tuned - - - and stay cool!

For this month’s Green Thumb, resident Megan Grothman has nominated her neighbors, Randy and Robin Brown.

The Browns have recently installed new windows and a side gate along with repainting their exterior. In addition, they have also updated their landscaping and according to Megan it, “looks amazing”.

Thanks to these residents for the delightful view and helping to make it… great at Dobson Ranch!

LANDSCAPING TIPS

By Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association, the Sustainable Landscape Management (SLM) and the Arizona Certified Landscape Professional (ACLP) programs www.ALCA.org

Monsoon season is a blink away (technically about 40 hot days away, but who’s counting?) and many of us are thinking about scheduling tree pruning, before strong winds take down heavy limbs. Once temperatures reach over 110 degrees, care must be taken not to stress trees excessively. Here are a few tips to keep your trees healthy before and after pruning during the hottest months of the year: • Make sure trees are well watered before and after pruning. This will help them recover from the wounds created during the pruning process.

• If a tree is under drought stress, wait until the tree has recovered before pruning to prevent the tree from going into shock.

• Do not over-prune trees: the rule of thumb is only to remove up to 25- 30% of the living tissue in one year, and much less for older, more established trees.

• Do not lion-tail trees. Lion-tailing puts more weight on branch tips, increasing the risk of failure in wind.

• Do not over-elevate canopy, which can put the tree at risk of sunburn. Sunburned trunks can lead stem borer infestation and branch dieback.

• Do not over-prune date and fan palms. The lowest fronds should drop to the horizontal plane. Request all palms to be pruned to 9 and 3 o’clock.

• Allow some small ‘sucker-like’ branches to remain on trunks and limbs of newly planted trees, which helps protect from sunburn and also encourages the branches increase in girth.

Tree care professionals and landscape contractors are generally busier in the warmer months, schedule your trees to be pruned in advance to ensure you are able to get them pruned before the hottest weeks of the summer. Remember to always hire professionals who are trained, licensed and hold the appropriate insurance for tree work on your property.

2018 Garden Club Tea

They came for a cup of tea . . .and so much more. Beautiful tablescapes, a harpist, stylish dresses, fancy hats, garden greenery and tasty tea fare were all featured at the April 21 Garden Club Tea. The annual event, held at La Casita, features the creativity of Ranch residents who decorate and host tables, incorporating heirloom china, fancy teapots and elegant linens into their table designs.

Serving as hostesses at this year’s event, which included 100 guests, were Lynda Bailey, Donna Chapman, Linda Larson, Carole Minor, Linda Marshall, Patricia Prosek, Diane Schaefer, Patty Smith and Patti Stewart. Tables featured a childhood teapot, a Beatrice Potter theme complete with Peter Rabbit and chocolate “flowers”. Another table included flags of areas the hostess had lived in growing up as a military child. Black and white and whimsical polka dots were among other notable table themes.

Assisting with raffle sales and sign-in were Marty Blood, Karen Reid and Manelle Williamson. Additional helpers were Tom Minor, who kept the tea water flowing (among numerous other tasks), and Mary

Kay Yoder, Donna Fox, Tanya Andrew, Judy Biele, Al Prosek and Dan Madrid. It is truly a team effort as tables are positioned, welcome banners hung, fruit washed and sliced, garden plants positioned and fresh flowers arranged. Adding to the ambiance at the festivities was the music of a harpist.

There was also a special children’s section for the younger set. Tea took a backseat to orange juice and milk at that table!

The Garden Club Tea is always a soldout event. Mothers, grandmothers, granddaughters, aunts and special friends gather for a relaxing morning of conversation and tea. It is a memorymaking event!

Summer is here, and the weather is getting warm. Come out and enjoy your community pool and splash pad! Our new summer hours run from May 26th – October 1. We are open MondaySaturday 8am-9pm and Sunday 9am-8pm. We will be closed during the summer holidays. Did you know the recreation department has new, exciting events and programs coming up? If you have children or grandchildren ages 6-12 and are looking for some fun summer activities…look no further. We are still accepting registrations for Summer Kids Camp at La Casita. Camp will run Monday-Friday 7:30am-5:30pm. We do have 10 weeks, 5 weeks, 1 week and daily options available May 29th-August 3rd. See our ad or call La Casita for more information. For all you ice cream enthusiasts, come out to join us for the Ice Cream Social on Friday, July 13th at 6:30pm.

Bring your whole family out for a great time! You asked for it and we heard you, we are now offering an End of the Summer BYOB (bring your own bottle) on Friday, August 10th from 6:30pm-9:00pm. For those of you who have not attended this event. It is a blind tasting of both beer and wine that is brought in for admission. We will have hors d’oeuvres and raffle prizes. Come check it out! This is a 21 and over event, so schedule a babysitter now for the kids. Don’t forget about those little ones that want to learn to swim. We are offering swim lessons again this year. Spots are limited, so sign up soon.

Are there any golfers out there? Mark your calendar for the Golf Tournament event Saturday, September 22nd. Registration starts June 18th at La Casita Recreation Center. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming summer events!

(expires 9/27/18) Aqua Zumba keeps the Zumba Fitness workout party going in the pool.

Aqua Zumba is classic aqua aerobics with Latin flavor added to regular Zumba routines. The typical land-based Zumba dance steps, such as cha-cha, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, and mambo, are exaggerated and slower in water, so the water tempo is half the land tempo, creating a low-impact work out for all fitness levels. There is less impact on your joints during an Aqua Zumba class so you can really let loose. Water creates natural resistance, which means every step is more challenging and helps tone your muscles. Dobson Ranch homeowners may have noticed a new tennis pro (Kwong Young) giving lessons Monday through Thursday and Saturday mornings. Coach Kwong has been teaching in the valley at Kiwanis Park since 1987 and lives in Sun Lakes where he teaches in the community of IronOaks (formally Oakwood) of which it has 10 hard courts and 4 clay courts. Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum.

Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability. Other rules and restrictions will apply. Don’t forget… a FREE one hour pontoon ride per year per property is available for you to enjoy! Beginning in June, boat rides will only be available in the evenings.

2018 Boat Permits and Fishing Licenses on Sale It’s always a wonderful time for fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and LE release only) and boat permits are required for all XAM P watercraft (size restrictions apply). Licenses and E Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four). Children 7 years and up require a license. For more information, please call the recreation department at 480-831-7464.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation.

The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. Table and chair rentals request are made during administration hours (except for holidays) at La Casita Recreation Center.

The Dobson Ranch Retirees (DRR) continue to enjoy various activities thanks to the Chairpersons of all of the activities listed in the schedule adjacent to this article.

At the May General Meeting we were all treated to a delicious meal made by Diana Middleton. We were also entertained by Lynn Stevens and her tap dancer’s group, The Timeless Tappers.

The Men’s Breakfast for May featured Mesa Councilmember, Francisco Heredia, as the guest speaker.

Our June Meeting was a social event with appetizers and desserts.

A few of the activities will be on hiatus until the Fall, but we still will have Dinner Night Out, Ladies Lunch, Men’s Breakfast, Game Day, Movie Day and Happy Hour. Hiking and Biking will be happening on a reduced schedule.

Many of the members will be leaving the hot summer temperatures of Arizona. We wish all of our member safe travel on vacations and extended stays this summer.

We went out to Lunch, in May, went to Macayo’s . We sat on the back patio...such a beautiful day. The food and company were super. We are going to take a couple of months off.

Bunco was held at Chris’s. We were able to see her new carpet too. Your home is looking wonderful.

Thank you for a great evening. Bunco is on hiatus for the summer too.

I am pleased to let you know that we received a progress note from Jacob Massie, one of our scholarship winners from last year.

He has completed his freshman year. He learned a lot and is looking forward to his sophomore year. He is enjoying college.

We wish him continued success. Thanks Jacob for taking the time to keep us up to date...we look forward to hearing more from you in the future.

Meeting Speakers: Mitzi Epstein is our current member of the Arizona House of Representatives, representing District 18. She was first elected to the chamber in 2016 and now she is seeking reelection. She serves on the ways and means committee and the commerce committee.

Mitzi Supports Quality Education saying, “Measure what matters.

Our students are tested enough! We must also count what prepares students for life, like arts career and technical skills, world languages, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses” while working to protect public education and empowering parents to be involved in their child’s education. She serves on the ways and means committee and the commerce committee. She believes in growing the Innovation Economy by supporting small business start-ups and continuing to attract companies like Intel and Apple with an educated workforce and reliable infrastructure. Jennifer has worked on advocacy on all levels of government in several states, at the federal level, and on the international level. Her background includes advocating for public education, public health, access to healthcare, women’s rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, civil rights, disability rights, eldercare, senior services, and end of life options. Prior to her position with STAZ Advocacy Network, she worked for Steps of Love, the LVA Alumni Association, the Zen Hospice Project, the Arthritis Foundation, the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, and the San Diego Greenroom Theatre Company. If your family is interested in adopting a new furry family member, it’s important to openly discuss and decide if you’re ready for this commitment. If your family has agreed it’s time for adoption, here are some tips to ensure your family and home are prepared: • Prior to visiting an adoption facility, make sure your family has created an adoption plan. How many pets are you prepared to adopt and financially care for? What age will best suite your family?

• Decide what type of personality will blend with you and your family. How will your lifestyle and work schedule effect your new pet?

• Cat-proofing! Just like a toddler, you want to make sure your home is safe for your new fur-kid!

• Contact a local veterinarian: It is recommended to have a post adoption exam within 24-48 hours. Prior to your appointment, make a list of questions you may have.

Here’s a few examples: • What’s the best way to introduce my new kitten to my other cats?

• My new cat is sneezing, should I keep her away from my other pets?

• I have children, how do I prevent parasite exposure? What’s the recommended deworming and fecal testing protocol?

Pool season - All nine City of Mesa pools will open for the summer Saturday, May 26. The pools open for public swimming at 1 p.m. most days. Skyline and Rhodes will be open on Sundays. For specific pool hours, visit www.mesaaz.gov/pools

Save the Date for Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom The 2018 Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom is Wednesday, July 4 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. For the fifth consecutive year, this free event and the “coolest” independence festival in Arizona, will be held at the Mesa Convention Center and Mesa Amphitheatre campus, 263 N. Center St., and along Center Street between First Street and University Drive.

The Arizona Celebration of Freedom includes live music, patriotic displays, a naturalization ceremony, family fun, the Freedom Express trackless train, an expanded fireworks show and much more! The festival will include Revolutionary War reenactments from We Make History, the only reenactment group of its type in the southwestern United States. There will also be a Fallen Heroes Memorial honoring the Arizona fallen heroes from the war on terrorism.

Mayor’s TeenForce needs YOU! Are you a Mesa teen entering your junior or senior year of high school in August 2018? If so, get a head start on exploring careers with Mayor Giles’ new Mayor’s TeenForce.

“This year, the Mayor’s Youth Committee recommended more work opportunities for Mesa teens,” Mayor John Giles said. “The new Mayor’s TeenForce is a great way to give our high school juniors and seniors experience in a career they are interested in before they go to college or enter the workforce.”

The Mayor’s TeenForce is a four-week program that places Mesa students in local businesses for short term internships along with service projects and job skills training.

Participants will focus on leadership, teamwork, communication, responsibility and compassion to help prepare them for the workforce in their area of interest.

Some of the host industries include healthcare, engineering, education and law.

The commitment is less than 20 hours per week and includes three four-hour days of interning and one five-hour day of professional development or service learning.

Applications are due June 17 with an orientation meeting on June 21. Internships begin on June 25. For more information about Mayor’s TeenForce or to sign up go to mesaaz.gov/TeenForce.
