Who turned up the heat? The two remodeled pools at Los Altos and Saratoga are completed, just in time for the summer temperatures. We hope that you enjoy the new look as you relax poolside.

The City of Mesa will discuss crime concerns and prevention on May 24 at La Casita Recreation Center. Speakers will be Councilmember Heredia, Fiesta District Commander Ed Wessing, and Crime Prevention Officer Amy Sailors. Meeting will start at 6:30pm.

In April, we had the Association Annual Meeting. Please welcome the new board members, Joan Long, Gary Smith and Louis Thiele. As members of the Board of Directors, for the Master Association, there are many responsibilities they must carry out to protect the Association. Our new board members recently attended annual training on their responsibilities.

The board directors are the community leaders of the Association. Upon their election to the board, directors become fiduciaries with powers to act on behalf of the Association.

As fiduciaries, directors are held to a higher standard of conduct. They have a responsibility to fulfill their fiduciary duties to the community and exercise discretion in a manner they reasonably believe to be in the best interest of the community.

To do this, they must exercise: • Business judgement • Duty of care • Duty of loyalty • Along with knowing and understanding the; o Association governing documents, o Federal, state and local laws, o And the board materials for monthly meetings The business judgment rule is making a business decision, the directors of a corporation act on an informed basis, in good faith and in the honest belief that the action taken is in the best interest of the Association.

The board director duty encompasses both a duty of care and a duty of loyalty. The duty of care requires the director to exercise the skill and care that a reasonable person would use under similar circumstances. The duty of loyalty requires directors to place loyalty to the Association above other interest, especially their own.

The duty of loyalty also requires the director to minimize potential and actual conflicts of interest. A breach of this duty of loyalty constitutes a breach of fiduciary duty and can result in personal liability for the director.

New and current board members are reminded of this yearly, at board workshops, by attorneys who represent the Association.

We’re excited to be working with the new members of the board. We wish them the very best for the next three years. Thank you to all of our Board of Directors for their dedication and service to the community. They are making Dobson Ranch the best place to live.

President’s Address from April 23, 2018 Open Board Session The 2018 Annual Meeting of the Members resulted in the addition of three new Board members.

Congratulations to: Joan Long, Gary Smith, and Louis Thiele. These new Board members will bring new skills, new ideas, and a new outlook to the Board.

Noticeably, there has been a significant change in the composition of the Dobson Association Board of Directors as a result of the past two elections. I would like the homeowners to know, as President, that we have heard your message, that the Officers of your Board understand your message, and that the new Members of your Board were elected because of that message.

Therefore, we intend the following guidelines to channel our course of action this coming year, we will: 1. Have Board decisions be transparent to all members 2. Improve communication to the homeowner, both generally as well as to particular individual,homeowner. matters 3. Increase homeowner input and 4. Improve transparency oversight on Budget, Reserve Study, and Capital Expenses We understand that the HOA exists to help maintain property values at reasonably high levels while maintaining as low as possible assessment rates within The Articles of incorporationwhich state the Association is to provide for maintenance and preservation of the lakes, dry land and common areas. Additionally, the HOA exists to foster a sense of community within Dobson Ranch. We shall work for the collective wellbeing of our homeowners and our community. We shall strive to treat all homeowners equally and with respect.

We ask from you, the homeowner, for your understanding, and with anticipation, your support, for all Board Members voluntarily serve you to better our community.

Message from the Outgoing Association President

On Tuesday, April 10, the Dobson Association held its 39th Annual Membership Meeting. The evening was well-attended with food provided beforehand by Macayo’s. Despite the warm temperature, Ranch residents enjoyed a nice dinner on the La Casita patio. Next April we will all be able to enjoy the approved expansion of the patio into the old volleyball court location.

The meeting itself included participation by all Board members. Paul Hansen, an Association auditor, provided a very positive report on the Association’s financial status. Numerous volunteers, including committee chairs, club presidents, and the Dobson Board members were recognized. A list of major Ranch projects and activities were also mentioned. Elsewhere in this Roundup are photos with highlights of the evening. Thanks to our Executive Director, David Jones, and his excellent staff, especially Susan Richards, Donna Madueno, Maria Clark, and Jesse Wright, for organizing this important event.

As usual the meeting ended by announcing the results of the Board election. Elected to the Board for three-year terms were newcomers Joan Long, Gary Smith, and Louis Thiele. I would like to welcome them to the Board and look forward to working with these long-time Ranch residents. Association staff will meet with Joan, Gary and Louis soon to provide training and prepare them for the regular May meeting.

On Wednesday, April 18, the newly constituted Board met to elect officers for the upcoming year. Elected were Ron Ricci, President; Sandy Murray, Vice President; Jeff Brosman, Treasurer; and Stacy Holmstadt, Secretary. Good luck to this group - it will be a busy year!

Leaving the Board are Susan Powers, Bob Radisich, and George Tihanyi. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with these three individuals over the past several years. All have served as either Board officers or committee chairs. All are honorable, hardworking Ranch residents who want nothing more than to maintain the Dobson Ranch community. Serving as a volunteer on the Board in many ways is a thankless job and is done out of a sense of civic pride and responsibility. Susan, Bob, and George have performed admirably. A heartfelt personal “thank you” to all three of you.

This will be my final column for the Roundup. It has been both an honor and a challenge to serve as Board President for the past two years. As I look back over these two years, I am most proud and pleased at the many accomplishments of the Board under my leadership: • • • • • • • •

Initiating and improving the on-line voting system Designation of Kavanagh Park at Dobson and Isabella Implementation of new electronic fob access system Resurfacing of all community pools/entertainment area Expansion of Dobson Ranch branding program Continuation of Dobson United program for sub-Associations Successful annual breakfasts with the City of Mesa Cooperative re-landscaping of Dobson Road with the City of Mesa • Continued repair of lake/shoreline • Unprecedented attendance at numerous Ranch events including Halloween, Easter Egg Hunt, holiday boat parade, Bark in Park, 2 THE DOBSON ASSOCIATION

Polar Plunge, Laguna Park concerts, BYOB, Spring Expo, and Ranch Cleanup, etc.

None of these projects or events would have been possible without the support of the Board of Directors, various committees and numerous volunteers, as well as our excellent and hard-working Executive Director David Jones and his staff. Thank you all!

Mostly, I am proud of the excellent financial health of the Dobson Association. We have maintained our HOA assessment at the same level for four years now. Despite increased costs (e.g. insurance, fuel, utilities, materials, and the State-wide minimum wage) we have consistently operated at below approved budget levels. This is largely due to the excellent financial management of our Executive Director as well as the oversight provided by the Board. Our cash reserves are strong, we have no debt, and we have funds to cover planned improvements as well anticipated emergencies. As stated by our auditor, Paul Hansen, the Dobson Association is among the most stable and financially secure HOA’s in the entire State of Arizona!

As I mentioned earlier, this will be my final column for the Roundup. I would like to make some final comments regarding the recent Board election. The past couple of months have been unprecedented for Dobson Ranch. We have seen competing slates of candidates blanketing the Ranch with fliers, and current Board members actively campaigning against and personally criticizing fellow Board members. Questions have been raised that are more appropriate for partisan elections e.g. financial contributions to candidates, yard signs, political ads in the Roundup.

None of these developments are positive. Some behaviors have not been ethical and some activities are counter to legal advice the Association has received. I am very concerned about the precedent that has been set for future elections – that is why I will be recommending to the Board that, as a high priority, we develop policies to address various issues prior to the 2019 election.

Thank you to my fellow Board members, to Executive Director David Jones and his entire staff, and to the residents of Dobson Ranch for the opportunity to serve as Board President for the past two years. It has been rewarding, fun, frustrating, and personally gratifying….all at the same time!

I have two years remaining on the Board. I look forward to working with my fellow Board members, new and returning, to continue to promote Dobson Ranch as “The Best Place to Live”.

We’ve already seen a 100-degree day and we know that means that summer is coming! The Arizona heat is something to be respected and one of the best ways to be safe is to hydrate. That is why I am letting all Dobson Ranch Residents know about the 12th Annual Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign that runs from June 4 through September 14, 2018. The City of Mesa works with local business and non-profit agencies to collect bottles of water for those in need. I am pleased to report that Dobson Ranch will again be participating, and La Casita Recreation Center will be a drop off/collection point for water donations. 2018 Assessments

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2018. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

We are also excited to announce that our new Caliber software has officially been launched. Please note, your new coupons reflect your new account number. Please be sure to reference this new account number when sending in payments.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and onetime payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Please contact our office if you need assistance with setting up your payment. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2018.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

We have hundreds of satisfied customers in Dobson Ranch Ah, those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. While still several months away for much of the country, warm weather is upon us and we will soon be in the pool basking in the warm sun, floating on our noodles, blowing up the “swimmies” and running through the splash pad.

That’s right, Dobson Ranch is blessed with four great pools that are clean and safe for all Ranchers to use. The lakes, on the other hand, are kept natural, meaning there all kinds of things can be found in the water, stuff that is all part of nature, such as fish, turtles, weeds and some not so fun-loving bacteria. Then there are the migratory birds that stop by on their way to or from other places.

As the water warms, the lakes will be alive with all kinds of things.

People and children, however, are not considered natural inhabitants of the lakes.

Swimming is not permitted in our lakes and that means being on tubes and other devices that allow you to become immersed in the water. Who knows what the visiting water fowl bring with them or where they have been. To allow swimming in our lakes would require a huge investment in chemicals, filters, skimmers and other devices to keep the water clean. It would, however, destroy the natural beauty of our lakes. We have great swimming pools design specifically for swimming – have fun and stay safe.

Good Neighbor Award Julian and Janae Meier at 2636 W. Monte Avenue have been exceptional neighbors.

The neighborhood is appreciative of the willingness of this couple to help others in various circumstances. They have set up a surveillance camera that gives neighbors in the cul-de-sac a feeling of added security.

Recently, they reunited a lost dog with its owners by using social media and putting up posters in the area.

Dobson Ranch Now Home to 8500 New Residents!

On Saturday, April 7, 2018, Dobson Ranch residents and guests extended a warm welcome to 8500 new residents, ladybugs! The ladybugs joined the community as part of the 2nd annual Dobson Ranch Spring Expo. Sponsored by Dobson Ranch’s Water Management Committee, the Spring Expo forwards the theme of conservation throughout Dobson Ranch, and the “8500 new residents” will provide natural pest control. In fact, ladybugs are one of the best organic ways to manage garden pests.

Much to the delight of children and adults alike, the children filled clear jars with the ladybugs and released them on La Casita’s rosebushes and flowers, or took them home to release in their own backyards. In addition to the live ladybugs, children also enjoyed crafts, trivia, and activities as well as a close-up view of a City of Mesa firetruck. All ages enjoyed the annual Retiree’s Club Pancake Breakfast, where Harmony Rain serenaded the diners. Included this year was a “Recycled Art Show,” hosted by Ms. Jessi of La Casita Preschool. The show highlighted art projects inspired from recycled material. Did you find the bees made from cardboard and newspaper? The raindrops made from coffee sleeves? Attendees learned that art is for everyone, not just children.

Another highlight of the morning was the variety of vendors available to discuss conservation options for homes and lifestyles. Guests to the Spring Expo learned easy ways to conserve natural resources, how to save money, and how to take better care of themselves. Fifteen vendors participated, including the event’s main sponsors - SRP, City of Mesa, and Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply. Also on hand to meet with residents were representatives from Desert View Landscaping LLC, Dobson Ranch Library, Enagic, Garden with Ease, Herbal Jules, Jack’s True Value, Mesa Community College, Norwex, Recycled City, and the Water Management Committee. Thank you to all the vendors that generously donated great prizes.

Twenty prizes were awarded, including a limited edition Weber grill, two smart irrigation controllers, and numerous gift certificates and gift baskets.

As the cost and availability of water is a hot topic in adjacent states, there is no doubt that at some point Arizona will be in the same boat.

Many cities and communities are being pressured to reduce water consumption, with the #1 consumer being the landscape. Here are a few tips on how you can better manage water in your landscape: • Change irrigation controller programming at least quarterly to adjust to seasonal weather changes.

• Watering schedules should be based off of the evapotranspiration rate (ET) and not on past years’ runtimes.

• Group plants with similar water needs on zones together. Highwater demanding trees such as ash should be on a separate zone from a low-water use tree like a palo verde.

• Maintain at least 2” of mulch- either d.g. or bark mulch over all soil to help reduce the evaporation of moisture from soil.

• Longer yet infrequent soaks are better for most plants but plant type and age, soil type and exposure all determine runtimes and frequency of cycles.

• Have an irrigation technician review your system’s infrastructure to check for leaks and inefficiencies. Leaks and seeps should be repaired quickly to prevent water waste.

• Update the controller to a ‘smart controller,’ or a wifi-based system so you can make changes to your programming remotely in case of unpredicted weather changes.

• As your landscape matures, plants’ water needs change. Moving, adding, or even reducing emitters is necessary to maintain the health of your landscape.

• Replacing turfgrass spray heads with high efficiency nozzles can help reduce water loss due to evaporation.

• The signs of overwatering can be similar to underwatering. Physically feeling the soil moisture in the root zone is the only sure way to know if a plant needs more or less water.

Water management technologies and strategies have greatly improved over the past two decades, but the up- front costs to invest in infrastructure and equipment may keep some from taking the plunge to update their irrigation system. While a new ‘smart controller’ can help get your system watering more efficiently, it is very important to make sure your system is in good working order. Your licensed landscape contractor can help get your system working efficiently, saving you water and money. The time to be prepared for the possibility of future water restrictions is now!

Summer is right around the corner and our new summer hours run from May 26th – September 2nd.

We are open Monday-Saturday 8am-9pm and Sunday 9am-8pm. We will be closed during the holidays. Come and enjoy all of the amenities that Dobson Ranch has to offer. Looking ahead, we have more exciting events and programs coming up. If you have children or grandchildren ages 6-12 and are looking for some fun summer activities…look no further. Summer Kids Camp at La Casita is starting May 29th and will run Monday- Friday 7:30am-5:30pm.

You will have the choice of full day, weekly, 5 weeks or 10 weeks session options. See the flyer for more details. For all you outdoor movie lovers, come out and enjoy our Flick and Float program at Los Altos on June 1st at sunset (about 7:30pm). Bring your swimsuits and a tube to enjoy watching the movie “Deep” while floating in the pool. Finally, save the date for our community Ice Cream Social at La Casita July 13th. Bring your whole family out for a wonderful time. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming summer events and will hopefully see some new faces as well.

2018 Boat Permits and Fishing Licenses on Sale It’s always a wonderful time for fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat PLE permits are required for all watercraft (size EXAM restrictions apply). Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for nonmotorized boats. Summer Hours In Effect & We Played Our Final Tournament Until Cooler Weather Returns

Dobson Ranch Pickleball wrapped our neighborhood tournament season until cooler temps prevail with our First Annual St. George’s Day Contest on April 22. This is our first theme from Merry Old England, suggested by Gina Gillies, who shares her birthday with this national holiday celebrating St. George’s Slaying of the Dragon. It was already getting a little warm and the field of 9 teams did not finish up until late morning, when there was very little shade to hide in between matches. Accordingly, we have moved to summer hours until things cool down again, so Monday and Saturdays for “drop-in play” start at 7 am, and Tuesday nights remain at 6:30. Also, social play will continue to be available most Monday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 .

As always, Dobson’s 6 courts are available to residents and their guests anytime between 7 am and 10 pm daily, another great benefit of living here! Dedicated players with an appetite for more now have new public courts where great competition can almost always be found at Pecos Community Center/Awatukee (16 courts), Arrowhead/Chandler (6 courts), Kleinmann/Mesa (4 courts) and Harelson Park/Tempe (4 courts).

Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info

Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum.

Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability. Other rules and restrictions will apply. Don’t forget‌ a FREE one hour pontoon ride per year per property is available for you to enjoy! Beginning in June, boat rides will only be available in the evenings.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation.

The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. Table and chair rentals request are made during administration hours (except for holidays) at La Casita Recreation Center.

GENERAL MEETING The club’s regular General Meeting will be held on Monday June 4th at 6:30 PM, at La Casita Recreation Center. This is an informal social gathering with those attending bringing either an appetizer or dessert.

The Dobson Ranch Retirees (DRR) continue to enjoy various activities thanks to our Chairpersons of all of the activities listed in the Schedule adjacent to this article.

In April, we had all 6 of the HOA Board candidates speak at our General Meeting. Thank- you to all of you who spoke and met with some of our members during the lunch. Thanks to DRR Club members Bob Radisich and Susan Powers for their years of service as Dobson Ranch HOA Board Members!

The DRR also hosted the Pancake breakfast in conjunction with the Water Expo held on April 7th. Hats off to Jack Magura who coordinated the breakfast for the first time!

At the May General Meeting, Lynn Stevens and her Timeless Tappers provided the entertainment. Then a very special home cooked meal was served compliments of Diana Middleton and her volunteer group.

A few of our activities will be curtailed until the Fall, but we still will have Dinner Night Out, Ladies Lunch, Men’s Breakfast, Game Day, Movie Day and Happy Hour. Hiking and Biking will be happening on a reduced schedule.

Many of our Club friends head back to other areas of the country at this time of year. We all wish them safe journeys and cooler climates compared to our extended hot season.

Fishing Club

Fishing is good now.

Immediately after the spawn, fish seem to be in a state of transition and, at least for me, are sometimes tough to catch.

Fishing seems to really start to turn on about 3 weeks or so after the main spawning period. I have been catching them on various lures, including topwater and texas rig plastics. With water temperatures in the high 70s or low 80s, the next month will be great fishing.

You can typically pick up a fish or two if they are not biting well. But in order to get on a consistent bite, you need to be in a major window of fish activity. These windows can still be anytime during the day and you need to figure these out. You have to be fishing to catch them! As it gets hotter, dawn and dusk periods may be best. We saw a really cool pair of birds on one of our lakes. I believe they were white faced ibis. Has anyone else seen them? They are pretty rare. The Out to Lunch group went to The Perch in Chandler. It is a Bird Sanctuary. A little noisy but so many interesting birds.

The food was good too. May we went to Garcia’s. Celebrating Cinco de Mayo..

Bunco in April was hosted by Lynda. She is always fun and welcoming. Good food too! Thank you, Lynda. May 22 is our next Bunco night.

We supported the Garden Club Tea in April. We are grateful to Donna Chapman, Linda Larson, Carole & Tom Minor, Manelle, Patricia and Al Prosek for all their long hours of co-coordinating, organizing, decorating and Hauling everything to La Casita.

Meeting Speakers: January Contreras, Attorney, Candidate (D), State of Arizona Attorney General Attorney Contreras has a history of fighting for Arizonans.

• As an Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Attorney General, the department, which she is now running to lead, she prosecuted crimes and brought justice to victims and their families in elder abuse and exploitation crimes across the State.

Furthermore, in that Office and in the Fraud and Public Corruption Section of the Office of the Attorney General, she prosecuted fraud, waste, and abuse in our health care system to protect small businesses and taxpayer money.

• January has also extensively served the State of Arizona: She was a Deputy County Attorney for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and an Assistant Attorney General as the leader of the Arizona Department of Health Services, a Health Policy Advisor to Governor Napolitano, and an Assistant Director at the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, Arizona’s Medicaid agency.

• January founded a not-for-profit, Arizona Legal Women and Youth Services (ALWAYS), so kids and young adults who have survived trauma, homelessness, and the foster care system have access to lawyers who will fight for them. In this work, January has seen firsthand the consequences of our state’s opioid and heroin epidemic, and she’s committed to fighting for prevention and accountability to end it.

Here are some of the key races this year, and the candidates who have been invited to and/or have attended our meetings: Legislative District 18 Arizona Senate candidate Frank Schmuck is a U.S. Air Force veteran and Southwest Airlines pilot. Incumbent state Rep. Jill Norgaard is in her second term representing District 18. Her key issues are border security, jobs and economic growth, and education. She also is a strong advocate for the Second Amendment and the military.

Later, as the Navy’s chief medical officer, he worked on Capitol Hill crafting bipartisan legislation to improve the quality of care for Medicare patients.

Seth Leibsohn has served as Chief of Staff of Empower America, the think tank created by prominent national conservative figures including William J. Bennett, Jack Kemp and Jeanne Kirkpatrick. Leibsohn has worked as a conservative radio talk host and served as chairman of NotMYKid. Mesa City Council District 3 Marc Lavender, a Republican Precinct Committeeman in Dobson Ranch, is running on a conservative platform of closely scrutinizing city expenditures and reining in Mesa’s ballooning debt.

U.S Senate By the time you read this we will have met at our May 3 gathering with Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Kelli Ward, a former Arizona Senator who is seeking the seat being vacated by Sen. National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day

May 12th is a very important day, National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day. We always want to make sure that we are prepared for the worst and our thoughts may go straight to our family but we do not want to forget our family pets. Some common disasters to be prepared for, tornadoes, floods and or fires. Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Kits can be purchased or your family can work together and build a personalized kit. Kits are generally a mixture of first aid and survival items but each one varies depending on the disaster that you’re preparing for: A few supply ideas found in kits: • First aid supplies, like bandaging material and wound care • Food with long shelf life (Don’t forget your furry friend’s food) • Water supplies • Pet Carriers, collars with ID tag and leashes • Medicine and Medical Records • Sanitation needs • Hand-written emergency contact information Develop a family emergency and evacuation plan. Here are some ideas: • Develop an action plan and assign responsibilities to each family member • Role play different scenarios and how the family should respond in an event of an emergency • Choose a safe meeting location • Get Window Sticker Alerts for First Responders There are many resources online that will help assist you through the process. Natural Gas Pipelines in Your Community

In the Community

Natural gas provides clean, economic, reliable, and efficient energy to homes, schools and businesses; they are one of the safest methods of energy transportation. As part of the City of Mesa Energy Resource’s ongoing Safety Program, pipelines are inspected regularly for damages or leaks. However, damage to pipelines can occur.

Gas pipelines are usually buried underground and you may not be aware that you live or work close to a pipeline.

Yellow pipeline markers are used to identify the general location of underground lines and will provide the name of the facility owner, material transported, and an emergency contact number.

In its natural state, natural gas is odorless. Because of this, an odorant. similar to the smell of rotten eggs. is added to the gas as a safety measure to assist in detecting even the smallest leaks in appliances, house piping, and/or the distribution system.

A natural gas leak may be present if you...

• Smell: A rotten egg odor • Hear: An unusual hissing, whistling or roaring sound coming from a pipeline, appliance, or a natural gas meter.

• See: Unusual changes to soil, dead or dying vegetation, damage to a natural gas appliance or pipeline, or dirt and debris blowing into the air.

If a natural gas leak is suspected, evacuate the area immediately!

Do not light a match, use a phone, switch on/off lights, or do anything that may create a spark. Leave the area and from a safe location call the City of Mesa at 480-644-4277 (GASS) or call 911.

Mesa Fire Department ABC’s of Water Safety • Most people are not aware that Arizona ranks #4 in the nation for childhood drownings. Florida, California and Texas have the highest rates.

• More Adults then children drown each year in Arizona.

• In 2009, 2010, and 2011, accidental drowning accounted for 91% total U.S. deaths reported in children with Autism, ages 14 and younger subsequent to wandering/elopement. =ADULT Maintain constant eye-to-eye supervision with children around ANY body of water (pool, bath, buckets, fountains, lakes, etc.)

Assign an adult to actively supervise children around ANY water, especially at parties.

Use a US Coast Guard approved life vest for all non-proficient swimmers around water. NEVER substitute toys such as floaties or inflatable rings as a life safety item. = BARRIER A 5’ fence should be installed around pools to separate the pool from the house and play yard. The fence should meet all City of Mesa fence codes.

Make sure there is a self-closing, self-latching gate around the pool fence. It is best to lock the gate if the pool is not being used.

All doors and windows that lead to a pool area should be closed and locked.

Bathtubs, buckets and items that can hold water should be emptied and/or removed promptly and stored upside. = CLASSES Learn CPR and Learn to Swim. Teach all children and adults how to swim. All caregivers should learn CPR. Classes are offered by Mesa Fire Department.

Mesa Seeks to Fill Openings on Advisory Boards and Committees Are you passionate about open space and would like to help shape Mesa’s next great park? Do you have ideas on how to provide greater transportation options for Mesa residents? If so, apply to be a member of one of our advisory boards and committees. Expertise from the community is needed for a host of positions opening on the Parks and Recreation Board, Transportation Advisory Board and Planning and Zoning Board, to name a few.

Mesa residents are invited to participate in the process of City of Mesa government by serving on one of the City’s 25 citizen advisory boards and committees. Through this service, civic-minded citizens become involved in their local government and make recommendations to the Mesa City Council. The City, in turn, benefits from the knowledge, experience and expertise of citizens.

Each June, as board and committee members end their terms, new members are needed to take their places. For information about advisory board and committee openings along with meeting information and application forms go to www.mesaaz.gov/boards.

Mesa Launches Facebook En Español

It is a bold initiative that will set us apart from other Valley cities. The City of Mesa has launched a Facebook page in Spanish, or Facebook En Español at www.facebook.com/CiudaddeMesa.

The new Facebook page is part of a comprehensive effort by the City to encourage its residents to use social media to engage and be informed which is part of the Mesa City Council’s Transforming Neighborhoods strategic priority.

According to Simmons National Hispanic Consumer Study, Hispanics are active digital consumers with 61 percent saying the Internet is their first source for information. The study also shows 94 percent of online Hispanic adults use social media and share content five times more often than non-Hispanic users.

Mesa’s population by ethnicity is 28.1% Hispanic. Mesa Public Schools have a majority minority population of 42% Hispanic while Mesa Community College has a student population that is expected to be 25% Hispanic in 2018.

In addition to the goals for our mainstream social media outlets, there is one additional Spanish language social media goal – provide a hub/one stop location for consistent communication with our Hispanic, Spanish speaking and/or bilingual residents.

The City will utilize Facebook to begin with and then strategically identify if there is a need for new social media platforms. An Español team of City employees is creating content for the Facebook site. They are also promoting it at numerous public events including Celebrate Mesa Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pioneer Park, 526 E.
