Thank you to the five candidates who ran in the 2017 Board of Directors election: Jeff Brosman, Ron Magaw, Kirk Mehlhorn, Frank Mizner and Ron Ricci.

We appreciate your interest in and dedication to our community.

Volunteering as a Board of Director is often a thankless job, we can’t thank you enough! Our Board of Directors for 2017 – 2018 are: Frank Mizner, Susan Powers, Bob Radisich, Laurie Moe, Stacy Holmstedt, Jeff Brosman, Sandra Murray, Ron Ricci, and George Tihanyi. These members volunteer numerous hours to the Association, donating their time and expertise, making the Ranch the best place to live!

And thank you to those residents who spent their Tuesday evening at the Annual Meeting…it was great to see so many residents attend!

Everyone enjoyed dinner and visiting with neighbors, it was a fun celebration.

There was a display of new paint pallets and bollard lights at the annual meeting. The Association auditor was on hand to share with the membership the Associations financial status. Which is great! Treasurer Bob Radisich gave an update on the expenses of the Association funds. President Frank Mizner gave a President’s Report on the Association status. And each member of the Board spoke throughout the meeting. The Association vendors donated over $400 in gift cards. The gift cards were raffled off at the end of the meeting. Everythings great at Dobson Ranch, especially for the lucky winners.

The Board of Directors has elected officers for 2017 – 2018.

Our Board President will be Frank Mizner. We appreciate Frank taking on this important position which sets the course for the Association. The President is the chief executive officer of the Association; they exercise general supervision and direction of the affairs of the Association as a whole. They work closely with the Executive Director, who manages the day to day business and all of the operations and staff of the Association. The President acts as the liaison between the Board and the Executive Director.

Susan Powers will be the Associations Vice President. Thank you, Susan, for serving as Vice President and positively shaping the Association with your enthusiasm. As Vice President, Susan will act in place of the President when necessary.

Bob Radisich will be the Associations Treasurer. Bob has previously held this position and understands the intricacies involved in overseeing the financial affairs of the Association. The Treasurer reviews and signs checks, assists with budget preparation, and serves as one of the financial controls, reviewing statements and the financials as a whole. This officer is a voting member of the Budget and Finance Committee, reporting to the Board on the state

Laurie Moe will serve as the Associations Secretary. The Secretary is responsible for Board of Director meeting minutes and serving notice of meetings of the Board of Directors. Thank you Laurie for accepting the office of Secretary.

Congratulations Board Officers! Though each officer position has distinct responsibilities supporting the Board as a whole; it is the consensus of all nine members which shapes the decisions, policies, and overall path of the Association. We look forward to another outstanding year utilizing the assets each Board Member contributes to the greater good of the Association.

The last column is “Business.” I’ve just explained new updates and you’re probably wondering, how did we pay for it all? Our Executive Director, David Jones, and the staff are tasked to be under budget each year. Committees and the Board can make that task challenging. As you can see, the staff was under the 2016 budget by 8%. Our staff find ways to provide quality at a low cost, which in return saves the Association money. The Association only spent $198,590 in improvements and renovation for 2016. When you look at it all, you would think that it would have cost much more.

The Association expenses were just under $2.7 million. Utilities continue to increase and yet the staff could find ways to conserve. I want to take a moment to discuss volunteers. Without volunteers, we would not be here. Each volunteer, Board and Committees, have dedicated their time to make Dobson Ranch a great place to live. The volunteers were honored later in the meeting for their services.

As you can see, Dobson Ranch is truly the best place to live. The Board and Staff have done some great things this past year. Bob highlighted our improvements in his Treasurer’s report. From major improvements to entertaining you and your family members, we had great successes. I would like to thank our Executive Director and his team for their hard work. I would also like to share my appreciation of the Board. We are a great group that really want the best for Dobson Ranch. Lastly, I am grateful that you, the homeowners of Dobson Ranch, voted for us to volunteer our time to make Dobson Ranch a beautiful and best place to live.

After, Treasurer Bob Radisich reported on 2016 asset replacement, improvements and the Association reserve study. Paul Hansen, of Butler and Hansen CPA, reported the Association’s financial status, followed by volunteer recognition by Directors Ron Ricci and George Tihanyi. Secretary Laurie Moe gave the election results. Those results are printed in this issue of the Roundup.

The meeting was adjourned and followed by a raffle of numerous prizes from the Association vendors. There is a lot of planning, preparation and execution for an Annual Meeting. I would like to thank the staff for the time and commitment to make this and each event memorable.

Please join me and the Association Board of Directors on the third Thursday of each month at 7pm at the La Casita Grande Room. At the monthly Board meetings, we meet with homeowners, and discuss and take action on Association business.

Last month the Association had its Annual Meeting at the La Casita Recreation Center. A delicious meal from Dickies Barbeque was served just before the meeting. It was great for me to meet many of the homeowners who attended the dinner and the meeting.

I would like to thank the Water Management Committee and Dobson Ranch Preschool for setting up tables of information for the homeowners. After the meeting, the Water Management Committee raffled off a smart irrigation controller.

I opened the meeting and thanked about a hundred residents for attending the 44th Annual Meeting of the members. During the meeting, Director Ron Magaw asked for homeowners to comment and share their concerns. Secretary Laurie Moe, Directors Stacy Holmstedt and Sandy Murray introduced the Board, past Board Members, subassociation Board Members, Board Candidates and staff.

I followed with the President Report. There was a handout at the meeting that I addressed. The handout was titled, “2016 Did You Know?.” The center page highlights Dobson Ranch successes. We list it in four categories. Starting from the left is Dobson Ranch, underneath list the number of single family homes and homes in our 11 sub-associations for a total of 4,955 homes within the Association.

Just underneath that is a dollar amount for home improvements that homeowners documented for 2016 by submitting an architectural request; $1.8 million is impressive amount.

The next column is the “Quality of Life.” The information here is also impressive, but I want to draw your attention to “Homes Sold.”

There were 432 resales last year, showing that Dobson Ranch is a very desirable community. The next column highlights our “Amenities.”

I feel that this is what attracts home buyers to our community, not to leave out, also our low assessments. These last three years we have had some major improvements to our common areas. The Board approved to update the La Casita pool and splash pad area. We are thrilled with the result but our biggest measure of success is the resident’s enjoyment. This year, in 2017, the Board approved to have the same surfaces, travertine deck and pebble-tec pool, at the Los Altos lap pool. The project is complete, and if you have time I urge you to stop by and enjoy the newly remodeled area. I also want to mention this year the Board approved new play equipment at Laguna Park Dobson Ranch Quality of Life and at Mini Park. We, the One of the largest master-planned communities Board, also renamed Frisbee in the Southwest with Park to Kavanaugh Park. just under 5,000 homes.

It’s May and the summer heatwaves are beginning to overtake Dobson Ranch! But, there are options. You could retreat into your home, close the curtains, turn the A/C on full blast and wait out the summer. OR… You can beat the blazing heat at a refreshing Dobson Ranch event, pool, activity or class!

How about a dip in the pool? There are three locations in Dobson Ranch with pools! There is a pool at the Saratoga Recreation Center, 2345 S. Saratoga, two pools at the Los Altos Recreation Center, 2524 W. Campo Alegre, and the pool at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes, has a great splash pad also.

June 2 is the Flick and Float at Los Altos and will be showing the movie Moana. Free ice cream is always a great way to cool down, so come on over to La Casita on July 14.

Landscape Plants for Our Desert Garden

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2017. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association Administration or Recreation departments. Please be sure to include your account number when remitting your payment. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and onetime payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Once logged in, select the one-time payment or auto payment option. If setting up automatic recurring payments, click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you have set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes.

If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2017.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

Water Management Director

How green is my valley (yard)? For a while now I have written about how much water a lawn uses, especially when it is more ornamental than functional; to play on and to sustain our peace of mind. Lawns offer a relief from this hot desert climate we call home.

There are many sources that offer guidance to help plan and create a landscape that uses the least amount of water necessary to sustain a pleasing surrounding. Here are two guides that can be obtained at our La Casita Recreation Center.

These guides have been around for a while and have inspired many a Rancher. If you have not received your copy, stop by and pick one up. These guides provide specific information on what plants are best suited for our desert yards and they provided details on how to provide the water each plant needs to thrive. Have at it.

A lot has happened this past season.

There are some indications that some places are warmer now than in the past and that some places are experiencing wetter seasons. Here in the desert it is hard to tell as one year can be the opposite of our expectations. Last year we saw more 110⁰F plus days (23 versus an average of 15 days) but fewer of 100⁰F plus days (92 versus 118 days). More significant was the change in the pattern of rain. Rain used to come in torrents, ½ inch of rain in one hour, a little drizzle and it is over leaving the streets and gutters filled with run-off. In 2016, 6.9 inches of rain fell in mostly day-long events; 6.9” is the decade long average annual rainfall. The impact was to wet our lawns thoroughly. The water soaked into the soil producing little run-off and an abundance of flowers.

Can we cope with these changes? Our common area irrigation systems performed wonderfully by including the rain received in making the calculations for the next watering cycle.

As summer approaches, we should be attentive to our landscape for it has special needs. One need not apply too much water. Remember these plants are adapted to living in dry soil for most of the year. Just look at the Mexican Bird of Paradise, my Birds come back each year without any irrigation at all. Life in the desert can be a challenge; conserving water is just part of that lifestyle.

Los Altos Pool The Los Altos Junior Olympic Pool underwent resurfacing and re-decking, utilizing the same travertine product installed at the La Casita pool. It is ready for you to enjoy!

I want to thank the Dobson Ranch Community for supporting the Tween Egg Hunt and the Easter Eggstravaganza activities this year. All of the events were a success because of YOU! Summer is here and the weather is getting warm. Come out and enjoy your community pool and splash pad!

Our new summer hours run from May 26th – September 3rd. We are open Monday-Saturday 8am-9pm and Sunday 9am-8pm. We will be closed during the holidays. Looking ahead, we have more exciting events and programs coming up. If you have children or grandchildren ages 6-12 and are looking for some fun summer activities…look no further. Summer Kids Camp at La Casita is starting May 30th and will run Monday- Friday 7:30am-5:30pm.

For all you outdoor movie lovers, come out and enjoy our Flick and Float program at Los Altos on June 2nd at sunset (about 7:30pm). Bring your swimsuits and a tube to enjoy watching the movie “Moana” while floating in the pool. Last but not least, save the date for our community Ice Cream Social at La Casita July 14th. Bring your whole family out for a great time. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming summer events and will hopefully see some new faces as well.

Don’t forget about those little ones that want to learn to swim. We are offering swim lessons again this year. Spots are limited so sign up soon. Remember you can register for class/activities online. If you go to our website Dobsonranchhoa.com and under the Amenities & Activities tab click on classes, activities and sports. In the activities section you will find a link highlighted in blue that says “Recreation Payment Portal”. That will take you to our online site. Click on create an account. Preschool Egg Drop Whose egg will survive? That was the question that the young scientists at La Casita Preschool wanted to know. The students along with their familes invented a packaging device that would keep an egg from cracking when dropped from a ladder. Great job future inventors! If you are interested in signing your preschooler up for La Casita Preschool summer camp or fall classes, please contact the Recreation Department at 480-831-7464. Limited spaces are available.

5-use punch card (expires 9/28/17) Aqua Zumba keeps the Zumba Fitness workout party going in the pool. Aqua Zumba is classic aqua aerobics with Latin flavor added to regular Zumba routines.

The typical land-based Zumba dance steps, such as cha-cha, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, and mambo, are exaggerated and slower in water, so the water tempo is half the land tempo, creating a low-impact work out for all fitness levels. There is less impact on your joints during an Aqua Zumba class so you can really let loose.

In this 6 week class dancers will learn terminology of steps and how to execute them technically in Ballet and Jazz. They will learn classical dances in Ballet and Jazz through choreography. This class is a great balance of discipline and fun in an encouraging and positive environment, which will help build their foundation of classical dance. Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability.

Other rules and restrictions will apply. Don’t forget… a FREE one hour pontoon ride per year per property is available for you to enjoy! Call 480831-7464 for more information.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center.

A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. If a rental request is within 10 business days there will be an expedited fee 2 times the rental amount. Reservations can be made at the La Casita Recreation Center and include a 14 day cancellation policy.

Dobson Ranch HOA Recreation Department Saratoga Recreation Center 2345 S. Saratoga $30 resident, $37 Swim Lessons non-resident per session Monday-Thursday Evening Classes CLASSES Parent & Tot: Designed for 6 to 36 months old. With parent participation the child will learn the comfort of water, while having fun. Class features include: water adjustment, safety skills, blowing bubbles, and holding technique. One child per adult.

Tadpole: Designed for 3 to 5 years old. Child must be potty trained and can be separated from the parent. Children learn independently entering and exiting the pool, self-submerging, opening of eyes to retrieve objects, ability to float, kick and glide.

Frog: Designed for 4 to 8 years old.

Children learn to enter water by jumping from the side of the pool, independently floating on front and back, changing direction while on front and back, and combining legs with arms action.

Starfish: Designed for children who have completed all above levels at Dobson Ranch. This class emphasis is on improving the swimmers ability to front-back to back-front rollover method.

Introducing freestyle, backstroke and endurance to swim one width of the pool.

All Classes are 30 minutes each 8 days in each session. Classes have a minimum of 3 children with a maximum of 4. Instructor will assess the child’s level on first day.

Registration for the 2017 summer season of the Dobson Dolphins is open.

Registrations will remain open until all levels reach capacity. There are three easy ways to register this season: 1) In-person on May 13 at La Casita, 9:00 a.m.12:00 p.m. Team suits and swim gear will be available to purchase.

About Us The Dobson Dolphins Swim Team is open to children age 5 through 17 who live in or around the Dobson Ranch area. Practices are held four days a week during the summer months at the Dobson Ranch Los Altos Recreation Center Junior Olympic pool. The team participates in various local competitions and championships. There is a charge for membership.

2017 Boat Permits and Fishing Licenses on Sale Now

The weather is perfect for outdoor activities, PLE like fishing and boating at one of the beautiful XAM E lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply). Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four). Children 7 years and up require a license. For more information, please call the recreation department at 480-831-7464.

As predicted, the April Fool’s Day Tournament was full of unexpected surprises!! For the very first time we even had professional photography provided by Phil Taylor, one of our most devoted Canadian winter visitors. Everyone on our email list was treated to some exceptional pickleball photos, whether they participated or not!! Just another great reason to come out, give it a try and get on our email list. In the center of our featured photo, you will see our very own Carolyn Sedlak, holding the wreath awarded to her at the conclusion of play to recognize her 5 years of play at Dobson Ranch as one of our founders, and still going strong!!

As you are reading this, our drop-in play hours have moved to 7 am, Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and night play Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm. Additional hours may be available on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7 pm, which have an orientation towards beginning to intermediate players, but all are welcome.

Beginners are always welcome during group play and will receive basic instruction from regular participants and use of members extra paddles while getting introduced to the sport. Please wear appropriate court shoes, and be sure to bring enough water and sunscreen to insure a safe and healthy visit.

Remember, these courts are provided by the Dobson Association for members and their guests, and playing time is not limited to our published group-play hours. Another great benefit of homeownership in Dobson Ranch!

Fancy Footwork

From forehands to backhands and eye-hand coordination, much emphasis is put on upper-body motions in the game of tennis. Yet successful players know it’s equally as important to pay attention to your footwork.

Tennis is one of the few sports in which it’s important to be quick on your feet, but also have the endurance to outrun your opponent. Proper footwork can help you create a strong foundation for successful shots. It’s important to keep your legs active, stay on your toes, and incorporate hops into your game for better movement.

Simple drills you can do on the court or at your home – like lateral shuffles and high knees – can help you improve your agility and speed. Jumping rope is another way tennis pros condition themselves to stay quick and light on their feet. When it comes to building endurance, training in intervals is most effective.

During your next cardio session, try sprinting in short bursts of 15-30 seconds, then walking or jogging at a comfortable pace for 1 minute in between. Pretty soon, you’ll be able to increase your sprinting interval times as your endurance gets better and better.

It’s also a good idea to mix up your exercise routine to improve muscle strength and flexibility. You might be surprised at how activities like yoga, swimming, and cycling can improve your tennis game. Venus Williams has said she incorporates vinyasa yoga into her weekly workouts, while Novak Djokovic spends time jogging or biking as part of his exercise regimen. If a holistic approach to fitness has helped these pros master their footwork, it can certainly work for you!

Laguna Park Filled with Excitement for Annual Eggstravaganza Over 1500 Ranch residents gathered at Laguna Park for face painting, bounce houses, carnival games, contests, a petting zoo, vendor booths and … the Easter Bunny!! There was also the muchanticipated egg hunt, by age groups, with hundreds eggs. Everyone was a winner as each child received a goody bag. The coloring contest winners were Kolten in the 0-4 age group, Katelyn in the 5-8 year old group and Brooklyn in the 9-13 category. Tween Egg Hunt

Laguna Park glowed with hundreds plastic eggs at the recent Tween Egg Hunt. The tweens, aged 9 through 12, were able to clear the park of all those eggs in about two minutes! They were fast!

It didn’t matter how many eggs the youngsters found at this popular event, because everyone went home with a prize. Thanks to the awesome Dobson Ranch recreation staff, the tween egg hunt was a glowing success!

GENERAL MEETING

Well, we got through another winter, feeling sorry for the folks that don’t live here. We do have it good don’t we? Our group had a great time with our cruise, although a bit bumpy at times we all survived and enjoyed our days at sea and Catalina and Ensenada. What fun. Shopping and sightseeing and the weather was beautiful.

Now to the Sock Hop. We all had fun and the DJ was great.

Food and drinks, we all had a great time, Connie did a great job with decorations and our team that put it all together had fun decorating. Great big co-dos to Connie, Fran, Judie and me too for putting so much effort and work into making a fun appreciation for all our members to enjoy! We hope you had as much fun as we did.

We all have deep thoughts and well wishes for all our friends and neighbors that need hugs and prayers now. We all need them occasionally, some more than others, so we will keep you in our minds always!

A lot of you will be heading back to other areas of the country now, to your hometown, but many of us will stay and endure the heat, as we call this home now, that is one of the best things about Arizona, you are only a few hours away from cool weather, warm beaches and our beautiful mountains and lakes. Any time of year you can have it all.

Since it is getting warmer the retirees are dropping a few activities such as biking and hiking, but that is not the end of the fun for us retirees, we still have dinner night out, ladies lunch, picnics, men’s breakfast and let’s not forget game day, movie day and happy hour. We will still have our general meeting the first Monday of every month so please attend and pick up your calendar for all our events so you don’t miss any of them.

The club’s regular February meeting will be on Monday June 5th, at 6:30 pm at La Casita Recreation Center. Guests and prospective new members are welcome to attend.

Dobson Pavement Pounders Do you want to start running, find some friends to walk with or train for an endurance run? Then it’s time to tackle your fitness goals with your friendly neighbors.

The Dobson Pavement Pounders promotes running, walking and friendships in the Dobson Ranch and surrounding neighborhoods.

Whether you are a recreational walker, novice runner or advanced marathoner, this club offers support, weekly meetings and fellowship, afterwards, to keep you motivated and moving.

Currently, we meet in the Parking lot of Bisbee Breakfast Club at 7 a.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Wednesday. The location is on the corner of Guadalupe and Dobson at 2909 S. Dobson Rd. Out to Lunch was in Maricopa with Elaine as our hostess. We had a great time. We miss her being on the Ranch.

Our members that also belong to the Garden Club, Patricia, Lynda and Patty, did a beautiful job decorating their tables for the Garden Club Tea. It is a fun event. Thank you to Donna Chapman and the Garden Club for this event. If you haven’t had a chance to attend put it on your calendar for next year.

Our former member, Diane Schaffer is still in Palm Springs in a Rehab facility. She is a real trooper and fighter. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time in her life...

Memorial Day is approaching. Please take time to remember those men, women, families and animals that gave and supported lives for our freedom and the Worlds freedoms. The National Cemetery has a moving memorial service. Take your family and teach them why we celebrate this Special Day. God Bless them.

Fish Club

We are moving into summertime patterns on our lakes. By the time you read this article, lake temperatures will probably be over 80 degrees.

It is interesting how different “ecosystems” behave uniquely in relation to water temperature and fish activity. In cold more northern climates, fish spawn later and are more active during the summer months. In the South and Southwest, fish spawn earlier and typically go deeper following bait fish in the summer months in our larger reservoirs. In our Dobson Ranch lakes, the fish really don’ have any place to go in terms of depth because most of the lakes are only eight feet deep. Therefore, their feeding and resting patterns are adapted to the variables of our lakes’ microclimates.

They will progressively feed more in low light conditions and at dark. When it gets really hot, they will hunker down and rest in the shade of rock found in some of our lakes, or on the lake bottom.

Fishing is good right now. I have found May on our lakes to be probably the best time to catch bass with various and all techniques that may be used. You can catch them by using reaction baits like topwater and crankbaits. You can catch them slow by dragging a rubber work or jig. And before it gets too seasonally hot, you can also catch them during different periods of the day, even under the full sun.

The Third Annual Adult Fishing Tournament was held on April 29, on Lake 1. We did not have the results as of the writing of this article, but will report back in next month’s Roundup.

2017 Garden Club Tea

On April 8, La Casita was turned into a tearoom as the Garden Club hosted its annual Tea event. Approximately 100 guests, many dressed in fancy hats and party dresses, gathered to share a relaxing morning which featured a menu of scones, lemon curd, muffins, fresh fruits, crème fraiche and TEA. A highlight of the event is seeing the spectacular table arrangements. A colorful display of teapots and dishes ranging from wedding to whimsical make for fun viewing. Hosting this year’s tables were Lynda Bailey, Donna Chapman, Linda Larson, Joanna Loftus, Carole Minor, Patricia Prosek, Nancy Roberts, Diane Schaefer(Carole Armstrong, Nina Eppley and Jean Duke) and Patty Smith.

Assisting with raffle sales and set-up were Manelle Williamson, Tanya Andrew and Mary Kay Yoder. Coordinating activities at the children’s table, which was decorated in pinks with feather boas, were Chloe Chapman and Krislin Jarvis. Of course tea for 100 requires lots of hot water. Making certain there was plenty were Tom Minor and Mike O’Dell.

Themes for this year’s tables included a seascape, Ireland, black and white, elegant milk glass, blue and white, red polka-dot, spring bunnies and everything flowers. Ferns, fresh flowers and garden pots were arranged throughout La Casita to create a garden setting. Adding to the ambiance was the music of a harpist.

The Garden Club Tea is always a sold out event. It is a relaxing morning with shared conversation and makes for happy memories.

Canine Compatriots

As we remember all of the brave men and women who have served our country on this Memorial Day, let us also take a moment to honor all of the service animals who have worked alongside them. The military began to officially acknowledge and even give accolades to canine combatants after World War II. Currently there are around 2,500 dogs in active service and hundreds deployed overseas.

The dog who paved the way was a Pit Bull mix named Stubby. He served in World War I because he was actually smuggled in to battle by a Private. He ended up saving countless lives by detecting enemy gas, barking out warnings when rival troops approached and located wounded soldiers on the battle field. He was promoted to Sargent and his story is being made in to a movie that will be out next year.

A German Shepherd mix named Chips was the stand out service dog in World War II. His claim to fame happened in Italy where his unit was pinned down with machine gun fire. Chips broke away from his 22 THE DOBSON ASSOCIATION 24

Washington Elementary is an A + school located right in our Dobson Ranch neighborhood!

April and May are busy months at Washington! We would like to thank all the friends and family who attended our Annual Talent Show on April 28th! Great job to all of the students who shared their talent with us!

Thanks also goes out to our Washington families for supporting Music in our Schools! We have great participation in our Band and Orchestra programs and we had great end of the year Spring concerts on May 9th and 11th! Bravo!!

Mesa Seeks to Fill Openings on Advisory Boards and Committees

Are you passionate about open space and would like to help shape Mesa’s next great park? Do you have ideas on how to provide greater transportation options for Mesa residents? If so, apply to be a member of one of our advisory boards and committees. Expertise from the community is needed for a host of positions opening up on the Parks and Recreation Board, Transportation Advisory Board and Judicial Advisory Board, to name a few.

Each June, as board and committee members end their terms, new members are needed to take their places. For information about advisory board and committee openings along with meeting information and application forms go to www.mesaaz.gov/cityhall/advisory-boards-committees. If you are interested in serving and have questions about a specific board or committee, contact Ian Linssen at (480) 644-3002 or ian.linssen@mesaaz.gov.

Prospective board and committee members must complete an application form, which can be filled out and submitted online or printed and mailed. Mail completed forms to the Mayor’s Office, P.O. Desert Wave International District 3 Councilmember Ryan Winkle hosted the Desert Wave Invitational on April 29th at Rhodes Aquatic Center. 300 folks enjoyed open swim at Rhodes Aquatic Center and watched a surfing competition. The City of Mesa Police Department and Mesa Fire and Medical Department defeated the Tempe Police Department and Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department in a surf off. Burgers, hotdogs and refreshments were provided at this free family event that benefited the 100 club of Arizona.

Bottled water was handed out by Dobson Ranch HOA. Dobson Ranch is part of District 3 in the City of Mesa with Ryan Winkle as Councilmember.
