By the time you read this message, the Annual Meeting of members has occurred. I hope that you were able to attend. This is a time for neighbors to meet one another and discuss common interests. The Board presented their accomplishments and successes from 2015. Association CPA, Paul Hansen, presented to the membership the annual audit report. It was announced who will sit on the Board of Directors for the next three years.

Since I’m writing this article in the month of March, I’m unable to inform you who of the four, that were running for a three open board seats, were elected.

Sandy Murray and Stacy Holmstedt are current members of the Board and were running for reelection. Sandy has been on the Board since 2005 and over the past three years has been the Association President, Association Vice President, a committee member to Master Planning, Marketing and Governing Document Review. Stacy has been on the Board since 2010. She has been the Association Secretary and Treasurer. The past three years Stacy has served on the Finance and Marketing Committees. Stacy has also worked on special projects assigned by the Board of Directors. Sarah Funtowicz did not seek reelection to the Board of Directors. Sarah was the Association Secretary, a liaison to the Recreation Committee, assisted creating policies and helped draft the Mission and Vision Statements. Thank you all for your work and dedication to the Association, it is greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer member of a committee or the Board of Directors, please contact the office for details. To get involved, I encourage you to join a committee. Your creative ideas, work on special projects and overall time as a volunteer will help the Association prosper. You just need to make the effort to join the fun. Help make Dobson Ranch the best place to live.

Message from the Association Board President

I called the March 17, 2016 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:06 pm. Here’s a recap…

I gave the President’s Report on two recently successful events.

Sunday in the Park was an enjoyable afternoon with about 150 people at Laguna Park listening to live music, playing games and catching some rays. On March 11 Movie in the Park attracted quite a crowd. One of our vendors, Valhalla Printing, sponsored food for the event. Everyone enjoyed the hot food and cold drinks as they watched the movie Pan. Ron Magaw spoke on behalf of the Water Management Committee noting that the Water Conservation Fair, in conjunction with the Pancake Breakfast, was scheduled for Saturday April 9. A great deal was planned for this morning including 10 vendors supporting water conservation, prizes, a bake sale, tennis and pickleball demonstrations, plus live entertainment. It was guaranteed to be an event not to miss.

Frank Mizner thanked the Ad Hoc Committee for all of the time and effort they have put, and continue to put, into reviewing and amending the Association documents. The Committee began their review back in July of 2015 with the goal of standardizing the format of the documents to include a table of contents, definitions, and a revision record to document future amendments. The Bylaws and Residential Architectural Guidelines were the first of the documents evaluated. After careful review by the Committee the revisions were brought in front of the Board, next the documents went to the Associations attorney, then back to the Committee, and ultimately back to the Board of Directors for adoption. This has been a lengthy process – thank you again to the Committee and the Board of Directors for their dedication to ensuring the Association has relevant, up-todate documents. The Amended Bylaws and Amended Residential Architectural Guidelines were adopted at the meeting – please review them on the website (dobsonranch.com) or contact the office for a copy…the Amended Residential Architectural Guidelines will be enforced beginning July 1, 2016.

A Message From the Editor

Did you know that April 18th is National Columnists’ Day? No? Hmmm … that’s what I thought! Somehow, no one even seems to know that such a day exists, especially since it is considered one of those unofficial or “weird” holidays. But I say it’s a great reason to celebrate, and you can too… by reading this issue of the Ranchers’ Roundup!

So, starting right here you can mark your calendars for some other great ways to have fun and celebrate.

Ladies, I hope you have already purchased your ticket for the Garden Club Tea Party on Saturday, April 23rd because it is a sold out event! I’m sure the fish will be biting April 30th at the Adult Fishing Tournament at Saratoga. Details in the Recreation section.

The fun continues on in May. May 7th is the Cerveza Run and then Summer Camp begins on May 31st. Pre-registration is required for both of these events. Sign up early!

Thanks for celebrating National Columnists’ Day with me and reading my article. Remember, there is always something fun to do at Dobson Ranch any day of the year! Just another reason Dobson Ranch is the best place to live!

2016 Assessments

Your Neighborhood

In a continued effort to maintain an affordable assessment while preserving our maturing community, the Board of Directors has voted to not increase the 2016 Assessments. Therefore; the rates will remain at, $138.60 quarterly, $277.20 semi-annually, and $554.40 annually.

Assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $30 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter. Delinquent interest will accrue on any unpaid balance.

As a reminder, there are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www. dobsonranchhoa.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Check payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association office. Coupons need to accompany mailed or dropped payments. Cash, debit or credit card payments are accepted in the Association office. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone.

Monthly payment is not an option through the mail or drop off.

3. Automatic monthly payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranchhoa.com) using your bank card, credit card or e-check. Scroll down and click on the “Assessment Payment Portal”, set up a New User Account or login if you are a returning user , click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes.

If you are setup on recurring payments through the Washington Federal/Rentpayment site, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2016.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay. You will have to set up the payment through the bill pay program with your bank. Please reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

The Grass is Always Greener

Once upon a time not so long ago, a community grew up in the desert where surprisingly, water was available for all their landscaping needs. Trees were planted and grass grew all year round. Over the course of time a new reality emerged. Then came Mark Watney (from The Martian

by Andy Weir) to show us the way by “doing the math.”

The math is really straightforward. Landscape needs a certain amount of water to thrive and do what it is designed to do; add value to your property with aesthetic curb appeal, create a pleasant and relaxing environment, provide a playground for you and your family and control the dust. Yep, that last part can be as important as the first. Crushed granite seems to be the favorite where grass is banished.

Back to the math. Landscape demands a balance between the water it needs and the water it receives. Plants need water to live and the amount needed can be quantified; the information is readily available. The easiest way to think about it is to imagine a pool of water. We know how much water will evaporate from a pool, about 70 inches of water a year per square foot of pool area; more in hot years, less in cooler years. Grass will go through a lot of water using up about as much as a pool of water, about 85% as much water or 60 inches per square foot in a year. From where does that water come? Not rain; remember we live in a desert where by definition we receive less than 7 inches of rain a year. If one could collect all the rain that fell on one’s property, it would only be enough water to irrigate about 12% of a typical yard. Kind of the same problem Mark Watney faced; living with scarce resources until rescue comes.

We can cheat, however, and take water from the hose to make up for what nature does not provide. In the end though, the math still counts. There is still that 53 inches of water left to be found to sustain the grass, that is, for every square foot of grass, over the course of a year that grass will take a column of water over four feet high to stay healthy. Each adult, at 1.5 gallons per day needs about 75 cubic feet of water per year, i.e., a column of water on a one square foot base 75 feet high. Another way of looking at it - a 3 foot by 4 foot plot of grass needs the same amount of water that an adult needs each year. Granite can get by on 7 inches a year. Remember, water makes living in the desert possible - make the best of it.

Dobson Ranch Garage Sale, Clean-up and Shred

Dobson Ranch is a bit more beautiful after the recent clean-up.

Residents bought and sold treasures at garage sales, 279 vehicles filled the City of Mesa dumpsters with 21.44 tons of landfill material and 2.76 tons of green waste and boxfuls of documents were shredded. The next clean-up will be October 8, 2016, so watch for details in upcoming issues of the Ranchers’ Roundup.

Summer is almost is here, or at least it feels that way! Come and enjoy all of the amenities that Dobson Ranch has to offer. We have pools, a splash pad, parks and tennis courts to enjoy this season. We also have some new and exciting events and programs coming up soon. In May we have our fourth annual Cerveza Run starting and ending at Los Altos on Saturday, May 7th at 4pm. Check in for the run will be at Los Altos again this year. Please register prior to the event, no registrations will be allowed the day of the event. There will be a mariachi band, piñatas and fun for all ages. For more details see the flyer or call La Casita Recreation Center. Don’t forget about the outstanding Summer Kids Camp at La Casita. We have lots of options this year. There will be the choice of full, half days, weekly, and 5 week or 10 week session options. See the flyer for more details.

Last but not least, mark your calendar for Flick and Float at Los Altos on June 3rd at (sunset) about 7:30 pm. Bring your swim suits and a tube to enjoy watching the movie “Inside Out” in the pool.

Ms. Jessi’s Corner If you’ve been reading my article for a while you know how much I love to make art and other activities with recycled materials. April 22nd is Earth Day, the perfect time to celebrate our beautiful earth and teach children (and adults) the importance of keeping her clean. Here in preschool we call ourselves “Earth Superheroes” as we pick up trash on the playground, on walks in our neighborhoods and learn what goes in the recycle bin (or in the art bin!). We made some beautiful yard art a few years back using recycled materials.

Upcycled Garden Flowers Materials needed: Plastic bottle caps and lids Hot glue, gorilla glue (any strong glue should work) Cardboard Paint, markers or crayons Any item to use as a stake (rulers, paint sticks, etc) How to make: Gather your lids and caps and arrange in sizes. Stack them and glue them in size order (largest on the bottom). Cut the cardboard into leaf shapes, color and glue them along with your stake to the back of the flower. Aqua Zumba is classic aqua aerobics with Latin flavor added to regular Zumba routines. The typical land-based Zumba dance steps, such as cha-cha, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, and mambo, are exaggerated and slower in water, so the water tempo is half the land tempo, creating a low-impact work out for all fitness levels. There is less impact on your joints during an Aqua Zumba class so you can really let loose. Water creates natural resistance, which means every step is more challenging and helps tone your muscles.

Boat and Fishing Information

The weather is heating up and it’s a perfect time for outdoor activities, like fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and ple release only) and boat permits are required for all exam watercraft (size restrictions apply). 2016 licenses and permits went on sale December 1, so stop by La Casita at 2719 South Reyes to purchase them. Prices are the same as 2015. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for nonmotorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four). Children 7 years and up require a license. For more information please call the recreation department at 480-831-8314.

Dobson Dolphins Registration Coming Soon 35 years in Dobson Ranch and still splashing!

Registration for the 2016 summer season of the Dobson Dolphins will open May 14. Registrations will remain open until all levels reach capacity. There are three easy ways to register this season: 1) Inperson on May 14 at La Casita, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Team suits and swim gear will be available to purchase. Coaches will be there to meet and greet! 2) Pick up registration forms at La Casita and mail in to registrar 3)Download registration form from dobsondolphins.com and mail in to registrar. Swim team fees are due upon registration.

The season begins May 31.

About Us The Dobson Dolphins Swim Team is open to children age 5 through 17 who live in or around the Dobson Ranch area. Practices are held four days a week during the summer months at the Dobson Ranch Los Altos Recreation Center Junior Olympic pool. The team participates in various local competitions and championships. There is a charge for membership.

Team Mission Our swim program at Dobson Dolphins is organized to help develop varying levels of performing that will provide talent necessary for competitive participation. We hope to develop a strong sense of team spirit, a positive attitude about ourselves, and provide individual achievement and recognition. Last, but not least, we want our children to be safe and have fun swimming for Dobson Dolphins.

Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Information A one-time “complimentary” pontoon ride per property is available to residents. Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and are subject to weather and availability. Other rules and restrictions will apply.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community.

The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. Reservations can be made through the Recreation Department at 480-831-7464 and include a 14 day cancellation policy.

Adult tennis Dobson Ranch offers a full-range of programs and playing opportunities for ages 16 plus and ability levels. These classes introduce you to the elements of tennis with a quality instructor to ensure a positive, successful and fun experience.

Adult Learn to Play These 5 week classes, will introduce the social aspect of the game when groups of players come together to learn at the same time. To teach the skills of tennis to a class, tennis group drills have been formulated. These drills are meant to be fun and entertaining while also developing the skills of each participating player drills!

About the Event: This fun recreational run will begin and end at Los Altos Recreation Center located at 2524 W. Campo Alegre.

The run is about 2 miles and will begin promptly at 4 pm.

The event is open to residents and non-residents.

There will be live Mariachi music, a chance to break a pi単ata, and all participating adults ages 21 and over will receive 2 complimentary cervezas at the end of the run.

SWIM LESS NS Dobson Ranch HOA Recreation Department Saratoga Recreation Center 2345 S. Saratoga

$30 resident, $37 non-resident per session CLASSES

Parent & Tot: Designed for 6 to 36 months

old. With parent participation the child will learn the comfort of water, while having fun. Class features include: water adjustment, safety skills, blowing bubbles, and holding technique. One child per adult.

Tadpole: Designed for 3 to 5 years old. Child

must be potty trained and can be separated from the parent. Children learn independently entering and exiting the pool, self-submerging, opening of eyes to retrieve objects, ability to float, kick and glide.

Frog: Designed for 4 to 8 years old. Children learn to enter water by jumping from the side of the pool, independently floating on front and back, changing direction while on front and back, and combining legs with arms action.

Starfish: Designed for children who have completed all above levels at Dobson Ranch. This class emphasis is on improving the swimmers ability to front-back to back-front rollover method. Introducing freestyle, backstroke and endurance to swim one width of the pool.

All Classes are 30 minutes each - 8 days in each session. Classes have a minimum of 3 children with a maximum of 4.

Instructor will assess the child’s level on first day.

Contact the Recreation Department for information on private, 45 minute lessons with the instructor.

Saturday, March 19, we held our Springfest Pickleball tourney at the recently renovated Los Altos courts. Twelve players participated in a roundrobin doubles format. It was a beautiful morning, perhaps a little warm, but play was spirited and we all had plenty of fun.

First place went to the team of Gina Gillies and Todd Eastman (pictured below) with a perfect 5-0 record. Second place went to the team of Natasha Thompson and John Kiselyk with a record of 4-1. The players are pictured in front of the new wind screens, complete with the beautiful Dobson Ranch logo!

Other improvements include complete resurfacing, new court lines, new benches, new perimeter fencing, new and enhanced lighting, and a new hitting backboard built by our own Ranch maintenance staff. These improvements to the courts provide a much better environment for both pickleball and tennis players at the Los Altos Recreation Center.

Drop-in play continues on Monday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at 8 am, and Tuesday at 6:30 pm. Beginners are welcome and extra paddles are always available. Come out and learn about this exciting, fast-paced sport!

Tip #1 Make tennis fun and enjoyable Creating a fun and enjoyable environment is the most important tennis tip. It is very important to encourage young tennis players to get interested with tennis as they are the future of tennis sports. Tennis is considered a recreational sport for many, but to be able to encourage young kids to learn the sport is very important. This is for them to develop their skills and let them find out what they’ve got. Who knows, one of them might be the next Roger Federer or Serena Williams Tip #2 Correct court parts names When I explain and do demonstrations with students, we always use proper names of the tennis court. This will help the young players get to know and remember all the important parts of the court.

Tip #3 Not too technical Many tennis terms can be too technical that young students may not understand them. I avoid the use of technical terms during demonstrations or when doing some explanations. Instead, I use simple words like above or below and left or right. As the class progresses, I can start to use technical terms as the students start to grasp their meanings.

Preschool Egg Drop Who’s egg will survive? That was the question that the young scientists at La Casita Preschool wanted to know. The students along with their familes invented a packaging device that an egg would not crack in when dropped from a ladder. In the Wednesday afternoon class all eggs survived! Tween Egg Hunt

Movie in the Park

Laguna Park was filled with hundreds of glowing plastic eggs just waiting for over a hundred Dobson Ranch tweens to scoop them up. At this popular annual event, the tweens, aged 9 through 12, were able to clear the park of all those eggs in about two minutes! They were fast!

It didn’t matter how many eggs the youngsters found because everyone went home with a prize. Thanks to the awesome Dobson Ranch recreation staff, the tween egg hunt was a glowing success!

Dobson Ranch residents covered Laguna Park with lawn chairs and blankets at the recent showing of the movie Pan. Hot dogs, nachos and cold water were provided by our Ranchers’ Roundup publisher, Valhalla Community Magazines. Popcorn was handed out by the recreation department and the weather was perfect. We will have another movie event June 3rd at Los Altos Pool. Wear your swimsuits and bring your floaties for that one. Eggstravaganza

Hundreds of Ranch residents gathered at Laguna Park for face painting, bounce houses, carnival games, contests, vendor booths and visiting the star of the event… the Easter Bunny!! There was also the much anticipated egg hunt, by age groups, with about 2,400 eggs. Everyone was a winner as each child received a goody bag. “Off the Grid Hiking” It finally came to be, after a year of planning, four bold hikers spent a day in the eastern Superstitions.

We got up at 6AM, to meet and make final plans before leaving civilization. Two cars turned off Hwy 60. After a 45 minute drive up the hill toward the Miles Ranch trail head, we dropped off my truck, then back up to the 203 trail head.

Two small switch backs and a mile and a half, we were on top of the ridge, overlooking a very deep canyon. This trail would intersect the 270 trail also known as the BULL BASIN TRAIL, we were going to loop back to the Miles trailhead by days end. This meant that we had a 2000 ft. decent to the bottom. So you know that this means somewhere we will be going back up 2000 ft. There we met a lost Boy Scout troop. After looking at our map and conversing, the scouts headed back down the Haunted Trail, and we started up the 270 to the west. We crossed over the boulder ridden creek bottom several times until we started back up. The trail is need of much work, we had a tough time following the trail. Nonstop switch backs took us up and down on the North side.

The final decent to the bottom lead us down many very narrow switchbacks where we found trail markers again, this lead us to the sign post marking the 270 trail. This put us a mile away from the truck The four of us had a sore something, along with a need for a shower and relaxing day on Sunday. The map has this marked as 7.8 miles. Our Fitbits all said that we went from 10.30- 14.23 miles. All we know is that 7.5 hours of hiking was way more than we thought it would be, and are looking forward to the next adventure. Everyone learned something on this outing, be it safety, or trusting ourselves to make good decisions, most of all we stuck together as a team.

RETIREES SCHEDULE

GENERAL MEETING The Retirees Club will meet on Monday, May 2nd for their last morning General Meeting until August. In June and July the Club meets on Monday evenings.

Coffee will be ready by 9:30AM and the meeting begins at 10AM. There will be a program and lunch follows the meeting. All guests and prospective new members are welcome.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING The Board of Directors will meet on Monday, April 18th at 9AM at La Casita. For all officers and committee chairs. In May the Board meeting will be on Monday, May 16th at La Casita. No Board meetings scheduled for June or July.

LADIES LUNCH For April, the ladies will enjoy their monthly lunch at the Dobson Ranch Golf Course Clubhouse on Thursday, April 14th. Plan on being there by 11:30 AM. In May the ladies lunch will be on Thursday, May12th at TC Eggington’s at 1660 S Alma School Road. PICNIC Picnics are very poplar for the Club and they travel each month to various Day Use areas in Tonto National Forest. For April the Club’s Picnic will be on Monday, April 25th. HAPPY HOUR The Club’s members gather monthly for Happy Hour at Various locations near Dobson Ranch. This happens on the last Wednesday of each month and in April it will be on Wednesday, April 27th at 4PM The April Happy Hour will be at: Valle Luna, Boardwalk at Anderson Springs, 1949 W Ray Rd – Chandler, SE Corner of Dobson and Ray Rd. MOVIE DAY Once a month members take in a day time movie at the Pollock Tempe Cinemas located at Elliott and McClintock. Judie Bielo is this activities leader and can be reached at 480-820-7371. For April the date is Thursday, April 28th.

The Retirees March General Meeting was a St Patrick’s Day meal, all prepared and served by the Club’s men.

The Retirees have two bike rides each week and recently hauled their bikes to Tucson for an enjoyable 22 mile bike ride.

Each month the Clubs ladies get together for lunch on the second Thursday of the month, and in March they were at the Outback.

DAYTRIPPERS Each month an activity is planned for our members taking in a variety of activities and happenings in the Valley. For April the group will be at the Mesa Community College for a play titled PICNIC. It will be at 7:30PM and the cost is $9.00. IT will be on Thursday, April 28th. GAME DAY Members enjoy getting together for an afternoon of games and cards at La Casita. They will meet at 1PM, on Thursday, May 5th and you will need to bring your own beverages and a lite snack to share. Judie Bielo is in charge at 480-8207371.

MEN’S BREAKFAST The guys convene monthly at the Dobson Golf Course Clubhouse for conversation and a program over breakfast. In May they will meet on Monday, May 9th at 8AM. More info? Contact Don Willgale at 480-820-3377.

BICYCLE RIDES- FREE WHEELERS AND SLO-SPOKES The Free Wheelers meet on Tuesdays at 8AM and usually ride 20-22 miles and on Fridays the Slo Spokes gather at 9AM, also at the Library for a 10-12 mile ride.

HIKING Hiking is an important activity for the group with weekly hikes planned on Wednesdays. They meet at La Casita at 8AM and then carpool to various trailheads in the Valley. Fishing Club

If you look around the shorelines, you will see balls of little fish. These are bass fry. It is so cool to see them. The way this process works is that the male bass makes the nest; the female wanders up and hangs around and then the fish pair up in the nest. The female then vacates the nest and may hang in the area. The male sticks with the nest until the eggs hatch. The male then protects the small fry for weeks until they are larger and on their own. Thousands upon thousands of eggs are deposited. The law of averages as affected by lake carrying capacity for fish biomass dictate how many eggs ultimately become little fish or even a 6-inch fish. But my best guess, backed by science, is 5 to 8 eggs become 6-inch fish. Only several of these fish will be reach nice catchable size of 12-inches.

Fishing is really good now. Bass can be caught in all three stages of the spawn- pre-spawn, on the beds, and post-spawn. Reaction baits will work including topwater, as well as all types of worm rigs. Happy fishing. Get your permits at La Casita. We are seeing lots of folks without permits. It is not expensive at all.

Nominations needed for A Hero’s Welcome at Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom

Programs at Dobson Ranch Library April 15th - May 15th

Nominations are now being accepted for “A Hero’s Welcome,” a program that allows the City of Mesa to show its appreciation of our veterans and their families. The City will recognize the nominated veterans at the Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom Monday, July 4.

The City is encouraging the nomination of active military or veterans who are City of Mesa residents or City of Mesa employees. Nominations should include branch of service, duty assignments; deployments; promotions and certificates, awards and decorations received while in the military. Nominations can be made online at www.mesaaz.gov/ city-hall/mayor-council/a-hero-s-welcome.

If you are interested in nominating an individual to be honored with A Hero’s Welcome, please contact Jessie Stone with the Mesa Public Information and Communications Office at jessie.stone@mesaaz. gov. The deadline to submit nominations is Wednesday, June 15 at 5 p.m.

Dobson High Holds Open House

Construction has been completed and an open house was held March 7 for the new two-story building at Dobson High School. The new structure will house 32 classrooms and administrative offices allowing for the closure and removal of all the temporary, portable classroom buildings at the school. Career and technical education classes, math and language classrooms are to be housed in the new building.

MCC Theatre Presents the Play Picnic
