On February 26, the Dobson Association Board of Directors renamed a common area park located at the corner of Yucca and Isabella.

You may have seen in last month’s newsletter an invite for all to join the dedication. Association President, Frank Mizner, greeted the crowd with a warm welcome. He introduced Dennis Kavanaugh and spoke about Mr. Kavanaughs achievements throughout the years, including his time on the Association Board of Directors. The Board of Directors named the park, Kavanaugh Park.

The park sits off the lake. Many enjoy the playground in addition to fishing, kayaking, flying kites, having picnics and much more. If you have not visited the park, I hope that you will soon.

You may have read in the Roundup, starting last October, about the new electronic election process; my article last month provided details on the upcoming election and Annual Meeting. By now you should have received your postcard. If you have not, please contact the Administration office. The postcard contains special information that allows you to view information and vote electronically.

The Associations Annual Meeting of Members will be held on April 11. Each year, there are three seats available for a three-year term. As you will see on 6 and 7, there are five community members that are currently running for the three seats. All members are homeowners that live within Dobson Ranch and have a desire to be a board member; supporting the Associations continued success. All candidates’ information is also posted on the Association website at DobsonRanch.com.

The process is still a secret ballot. Overseeing the electronic process and counting the ballots is done by a third party. Election results are shared the night of the annual meeting and in the May Roundup.

Lastly, the Board of Directors approved the purchase of electronic locks for the Association common areas. This will be replacing the key that you may currently use to access the common area such as the pool area. The next few months in the Roundup, we will notify you on how to gain access to these areas by replacing your current key.

Financial Report

As the role of the Treasurer I oversee and report to the Board of Directors and Association members the financial stability of the Association. I am a liaison to the Budget and Finance committee who also assist me in reviewing the monthly financials and the upcoming year’s budget. I chair the Master Planning committee, where we review the reserve study and update a five-year plan for new capital assets. I also ensure that the Association is working with a qualified certified public accountant (CPA) who performs a full audit. The CPA works for the membership and guarantees objectivity; reporting their findings on the Associations’ financial status at our yearly annual meeting of the members.

Our auditor is currently wrapping up the 2016 financial statement. I thought I would take the time to share with you how well we did in 2016.

At the end of 2016 the operating account fund was at $2,419,837. The expenses for the year was $2,353,549. The expenses covered the daily operations of the Association (maintenance, repairs, utilities, lakes, staff, etc.). Actual expenses were under budget for the year by, $197,965.

The Association reserve study was completed last year, by a reserve specialist.

A reserve study is a schedule used to plan for maintaining adequate funds for replacement of assets. This eliminates unexpected fee increases, special assessments and borrowing. The reserve specialist reported in June of 2016 that the reserve fund was 78% funded starting on January 1, 2016. At the end of 2016 the reserve fund was $2,032,265. The reserve expenditures for the year were $166,114. There is an estimated $750,730 in expenses for 2017. The reserve specialist and auditor have both confirmed that our association is among an elite group in the country for its’ sound financial management of reserve planning. The board set a goal of funding the reserve fund to at least 70% of our asset base, and achieved that goal 2 years ago. As a result, we now add only enough to maintain our funding level, and this is part of why your assessments are unchanged over the past 2 years.

The capital fund balance at the end of 2016 was at $205,448. The expense for the year was $32,476. Currently, the Master Planning Committee is reviewing the five-

Here’s a recap…

The first item of business was my President’s Report… February 8, we hosted the 38th annual breakfast with the City of Mesa. This annual meeting between the Dobson Associations Board of Directors and City of Mesa officials and staff is always informative. The city updated us on water resources, planning and development, economic development, transit and communication. Dobson High School Marching Band performed at the breakfast; they did a great job.

We value this unique relationship the Association has with City of Mesa and are pleased we can work in conjunction to keep Dobson Ranch the best place to live.

Board of Director elections for 2017 have begun, voting is successfully underway. Please join us Tuesday, April 11 beginning at 5:30 pm for our “Celebration of Community”, there will be food and fun. Following the celebration at 7 pm will be our Annual Meeting where election results will be announced.

During my report, I invited everyone to the dedication of Kavanaugh Park located on the corner of Isabella and Dobson, Sunday February 26. The event turned out great, thank you to all who joined us and enjoyed the ribbon cutting and cookies made by EVIT. Under “Unfinished Business” implementation of Fobs, replacing our current key system with a cloud based fob system, was voted on and approved.

Also, under “Unfinished Business” was the resurfacing and re-decking of the Los Altos Junior Olympic Pool, utilizing the same travertine product installed at the La Casita pool, was voted on and approved. Thank you to our Master Planning Committee who carefully researched both agenda items over the last year, we appreciate all of the time and energy that goes into each recommendation.

year plan for new assets for 2017. Last year we estimated $144,934 in expenses for 2017.

We expect that amount to increase after our review.

There were $23,124 in expenses for the year expended from the water conservation fund; 2016 ended with $10,302 in the fund.

After expenses, depreciation, and funds transferred to reserves, capital and water conservation, the Association has an estimated surplus of $80,000.

The Board of Directors implement every possible means to protect Association assets.

• Protect cash assets with checks and balances procedures and conservative investment policies.

• Physical assets are protected with adequate insurance coverage.

• Guard income with fair and consistent collection policies.

• Protect real-estate values with proper maintenance of the common area and assets.

Each year the Board of Directors approve a budget. The budget is our financial plan that determines the annual assessment. It covers operation expenses of the Association and funding to reserves, capital and water conservation. There has not been an assessment increase since 2015; this is due a well-managed budget.

Dobson Ranch has funded the renewal of our 40+ year old assets without increasing assessments. This renewal has included La Casita pool travertine resurfacing, lake edge erosion abatement on lake 1, new signage (highlighted in last month’s news letter) and tennis court resurfacing, as examples. These not only maintain amenities comparable to newer HOAs, but they increase the value of each of our homes. We’ve accomplished this while maintaining an assessment level that’s FAR lower than any other HOA in the valley. If you are wondering if the level of service will decrease due to no increase to the assessment, it won’t. In January’s Rancher Roundup, an article about your “Association Dollars at Work” highlighted how assessment income was utilized. For 2017 we plan to continue great events, activities, maintenance to common areas and improvements to our maturing community benches and more.

Again, the Association can do this due to our future planning for the reserves and capital improvements funds and expenses.

It’s spring and I hope you are enjoying this great weather and spending some time outside. Dobson Ranch has great outdoor amenities to enjoy: lakes, parks, walking paths, outdoor exercise equipment, tennis, racquetball and pickleball courts, pools, playground equipment, picnic tables, activities and events.

There will be an exciting Spring Expo for the whole family on March 25 along with the best ever Pancake Breakfast, both beginning at 8 am. March 31 will finish out the month with the BYOB event for the 21 and over crowd. The always sold out Garden Club Tea will usher the month of April… get your tickets quick!

You will not want to miss the Annual Meeting on April 11. The meeting starts at 7 pm, but food and refreshments will be served beginning at 5:30 pm until it is gone. Things to Know Board Meeting Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? 2017 Association Board of Directors Election to Utilize Online Voting

Currently there are 5 residents who are seeking to represent you for the next 3 years as a Board of Director in our HOA. We have 3 openings and 5 candidates, so your vote definitely counts! A quorum of 10% is required.

The Dobson Association 2017 Board of Directors election will utilize online voting. Online voting is quick, convenient and secure. Voting is secret ballot, the voting process and ballot counting will be done by a third party. Election Results are announced at the annual meeting.

The online voting software will work with personal computers, smart phones, tablets, etc., and in any modern browser. We recommend that voters use the latest updated browser version that’s available.

A postcard (similar to the illustration) has been sent via USPS to each homeowner.

The front of the postcard has information regarding the Annual Meeting. The back of the postcard for the Board of Directors election has voting directions, links to the Annual Meeting and Celebration online voting site Tuesday, April 11, 2017 and a very important code printed above the mailing address. Every code is different, is linked to the homeowner and can only be used to vote once. The online voting site looks like the illustration. Place the code received on the postcard in the box. Once entered, follow the voting instructions, then the candidate bios, and ballot will appear. Three Board of Directors are being elected; cumulative voting is permitted. You may vote for 3 candidates or divide 3 votes as you choose. Why do you want to serve on the Board?

To serve our DR community in my areas of expertise.

What key qualification would you bring to the Association?

Vast experience in budgeting, cost control, executive adminstrative/ managerial/leadership positions in both industry and 501c3 organizations. Service in past positions include Executive Director of two non-profit organizations (PIC lnternational and Gracies), board member of Goodworks Counseling, Chairman of the Board of GCC. Have written organizational policy for four industrial/non-profit organizations. Managed contracts in excess of $100 Million and was a Certified Professional Contract Manager (CPCM).

What do you see as a critical issue facing our community?

Fiscal and fiduciary responsibility in our DR leadership.

Autobiography: Mr.Brosman served 23 years in a variety of engineering (BSME) & business (MBA), including policy, negotiating and management positions. For 13 years was the Executive Director of two 501c3 nonprofit organizations. Also has served as a Pastor (M of Theology) and has taught a variety of science, business and theology classes (Community College Teacher Certified). Mr. Brosman and his family have lived in DR for 39 years and is currently retired. He has been married for forty years and has two children. His daughters swam on the DR team for 10+ years. Mr. Brosman is a voracious reader and enjoys, sports, biking, chess and working out at the gym. Mr. Brosman has served in a variety of laity positions at his church.

Why do you want to serve on the board?

I have gained a lot of experience in the complex process of managing this great community during my 6 years of service on the Board. I would like to continue to bring my water management expertise to the Board so that we continue to have a great place to live.

What key qualifications would you bring to the Association?

For 24 years I have been an active member of the Dobson Ranch Water Management Committee, serving as chairman for the last 11 years. The committee oversees general ways to improve and conserve our use of water within the ranch, including lake water consumption, turf and landscape water use and rain water harvesting.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our community?

Water is a critical issue for any community but especially one like Dobson Ranch with its 8 lakes, 3 major park areas and lots of landscaping and grass. The HOA must continue it’s excellent relations with the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) to ensure that our lake water costs are manageable and that we foster and support water conservation skills which are models for other communities.

Autobiography: My wife Peggy and I have lived in Dobson Ranch since 1981. I retired from Honeywell Aerospace in 2001 and currently do volunteer work at a Tempe Grade school 2 days a week. Peggy is also very active doing volunteer work for the city of Mesa. We very much enjoy the community that calls itself Dobson Ranch.

Kirk Mehlhorn Dobson Ranch owner and resident Why do you want to serve on the Board?

I would like to serve on the Dobson Ranch HOA Board of Directors in order to serve the Dobson Ranch community in a more formal capacity.

I truly enjoy the community that I live in and would like to see it continue to grow and flourish. I believe that I have the necessary talents and energy required to make a difference.

What key qualification would you bring to the Association?

During my professional career as a risk management consultant, I have had the opportunity to interact with a variety of corporate clients (including fields such as Banking, Higher Education, Technology and Consumer Goods) and develop a key understanding of what activities and processes are required to facilitate success.

This corporate experience, in addition to my formal training in the accountancy and finance fields, will allow me to provide objective insights and perspective on key issues or decisions faced by the Dobson Ranch community.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our community?

I believe that the planning and treatment of association finances is a critical issue facing this community. I do not suggest this as an accusation of the current management structure, but as a larger macroeconomic issue facing all communities across the country. The process of effectively collecting, planning, allocating funds for such a diverse and large organization is a complex and challenging task. I believe that my skills in corporate finance will be of use to the organization and benefit the community at large.

Autobiography:

Kirk Mehlhorn has lived in the Dobson Ranch Community ever since acquiring his own residence in February of 2013. For his profession, Kirk has served as a Risk Management and Advisory consultant for the national consulting firm Protiviti for the past five years. While at Protiviti, Kirk has assisted with leading sizable projects in corporate finance and regulatory compliance for a number of clients in diverse industry sectors. He believes that his unique skill set will allow him to help identify areas of improvement for Dobson Ranch and provide an objective view of the community’s financial policies and spending habits.

Kirk was born and raised in Arizona where he graduated from Arizona State University, W.P. Carey School of Business, with two Bachelors of Science degrees with specializations in Accounting and Finance. In his free time, Kirk enjoys spending time with his wife and pets through biking, running and pickleball.

I have been a resident of Dobson Ranch since 1987. I have always been actively involved in the community, including participation in the annual Garden Tour, membership in various committees (Tennis, Recreation, Beautification, Nominating, and Vote Supervision), frequent Board meeting attendance, and unofficial Pickleball Commissioner. I am a strong supporter of Dobson Ranch and wish to continue my record of community involvement.

What key qualification would you bring to the Association?

Dobson Ranch is now well over 40 years of age, starting development in 1973. Past Boards and staff have done an admirable job of maintaining our neighborhoods and facilities in order to enhance property values for all of us. Our challenge will be to maintain our quality of life and strong sense of community into the future while wisely managing our financial resources.

The Board of Directors has three major areas of responsibility: fiduciary (prudently managing the Association’s finances); quality of life (maintaining our assets and implementing long-range plans); and communication (listening to Ranch residents).

We have many exciting projects on the horizon (on-line voting, electronic access for Ranch facilities, rebranding of Ranch infrastructure, and expanding La Casita patio areas). I look forward to working with residents, staff and the Board of Directors to implement these projects in a continuing effort to keep Dobson Ranch “The Best Place to Live”!

Autobiography: I retired in 2003 as Planning Director for the City of Mesa after a 28-year career in urban planning. I then served as Executive Director for the Dobson Association, followed by two terms on the Board of Directors, including the past year as Board President. Dobson Ranch is truly a great place to live, to raise a family, and to be a participating part of a caring and active community. Thank you for your support – I look forward to serving you.

For the past three years it’s been an honor to serve with the current Board of Directors. With your help, I would like to continue to serve and represent the residents of Dobson Ranch. As a Board Member, I served on the Ad Hoc Committee to update the policies of the Association, the Master Planning Committee for long range strategic planning, and the Marketing Committee to keep Residents informed. I’m familiar with both the budget and the updated bylaws and wish to keep Dobson Ranch moving ahead as a Great Place to Live!

What key qualifications would you bring to the Association?

As a previous business owner, former member of various corporation boards of directors and President of a commercial condominium association, I will bring to your board a vast array of business experience from maintaining real property and be an unbiased representative of association members.

Possibly more than anything else, a highquality Board member is about having the time to commit to the position and the ability to balance the requests and requirements of the residents within the constraints of the financial plan.

In closing, I have the time needed and the knowledge required to be a positive member of the team. I hope that the residents of Dobson Ranch will consider me for a position with the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our community?

As a member of the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors, one should be understanding and sensitive to the residents’ concerns. It is a position of trust and has an impact on the lives of everyone in the community.

In addition, a board member is sometimes required to perform a delicate balancing of resources and budgets. The decision should include the knowledge of the goals of the community and those affected.

We must continue to be attentive in keeping Dobson Ranch the Best Place to Live by: 1. Maintaining property values and by being attentive and fair with CCR’s 2. Maintaining a Zero Based Budgeting approach to cost management 3. Keeping annual assessments to a minimum 4. Continuing to communicate with the City of Mesa activities and government affairs the effects on our community Autobiography:

2017 Assessments

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2017. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up.

The next quarterly payment is due April 1, 2017

2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association Administration or Recreation departments. Please be sure to include your account number when remitting your payment. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and one-time payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www. dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Once logged in, select the one-time payment or auto payment option. If setting up automatic recurring payments, click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you have set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2017.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

2017 Water Conservation Events

Last year was even more remarkable than the previous year. Last year (2016) gave us just about the average amount of rain for desert dwellers; rainfall in 2015 was also average. And the irrigation controllers used to irrigate our common areas again made beneficial use of all that rain.

We have worked hard to bring our common area irrigation to a point where we can expect to sustain that water savings and maintain a healthy and vibrant landscape. The investment in a smart irrigation control system made by the Ranch has paid dividends. Over the past ten years we have seen the water used on our landscape drop by more than 10 million gallons a year with an average savings of $20,000 per year; year after year.

The new irrigation system has paid for itself several times over. Are the same savings available to the Dobson Ranch homeowner? Yes, let me tell how.

Earlier this month, several Ranchers were able to obtain smart controllers from SRP at a significant savings. Later this month, on March 25, 2017, the same smart controllers can be obtained at the Dobson Ranch Spring Expo. The Spring Expo, which has replaced the Dobson Ranch Water Conservation Fair, will provide the opportunity for residents to talk to water conservation experts and representatives who work each day to help us reduce our water footprint. A special children program will feature a ladybug release at 10:00 am. For homeowners, City of Mesa representatives will be on hand to explain a rebate program aided to assist conversion to desert landscaping. Other groups and vendors will be there to demonstarte water saving products and other products to reduce energy consumption. And for those interested in a career in water applications, Mesa Community Colleges will have representatives present. If you were unable to make the SRP Expo ealier this month, consider attending the Dobson Ranch Spring Expo and ordering a Rainbird smart controller there.

Good Neighbor Award A Dad, Andrew, and his son --I’m guessing between 8 & 10 were bike riding and the son hit my husband’s truck parked in our driveway This happened about 6 PM and it was already dark. The Dad and son came to our door, told us what happened and took our email address and proceeded to continue keeping in touch with us for us to get an estimate and they would pay for the damages.,which they did.

Hopping into your pool is one of the most refreshing things you can do on those hot Arizona summer days! But, keeping the water safe and inviting for family and friends means proper treatment and maintenance, including occasional backwashing or partial draining. Unfortunately, pool water discharges can contain environmentally harmful pollutants such as excess salts, elevated chlorine and other chemicals, and even nuisances such as mosquito larvae.

A pool owner may be tempted to discharge pool water into the street and gutter that leads to a storm drain. However, the purpose of the storm drain system is to protect against flooding and water damage by quickly removing rain water from our streets. This water gets no treatment and may ultimately drain into washes, lakes, retention basins, community parks, and can even make its way into the Salt and Gila rivers. This is why the City of Mesa has ordinances and programs to reduce pollutants into our storm drains and why the disposal of swimming pool water to the City’s storm drain system is prohibited.

This website http://www.mesaaz.gov/residents/environmental/ drain-or-backwash-your-pool will provide steps and guidelines for draining your pool properly in the City of Mesa. These guidelines also apply when draining spas and fountains. It is best to consult a pool professional to determine when it is necessary to drain your pool and how often to do so. The weather is starting to heat up and so are the Recreation Programs and Events at Dobson Ranch HOA. It’s the time of year for some spring cleaning. Join us for our Garage Sale, Clean Up and Shred on Saturday, March 18th. Don’t forget about our Pancake Breakfast and Spring Expo on Saturday, March 25th. The retirees are cooking up some tasty pancakes, I know I will be there, will you? You can start planning ahead for the BYOB Event (bring your own bottle) at La Casita Recreation Center on Friday, March 31st.

Easter will be here before we know it, so tell all of your family and friends that the recreation department is having two Easter events again this year.

The Tween Egg Hunt, which is geared for those teenagers in your life, is on Friday night April 14th. We will also be having our family event, Easter Eggstravaganza, on Saturday, April 15th at Laguna Park. Last but not least, plan to attend The Garden Club Tea on April 8th. There are lots of spring events to enjoy at Dobson Ranch HOA. Come out and have some fun!

It is hard to believe that it has been one year since the La Casita Recreation Center Pool got its face lift. A quick reminder that the Splash pad reopened on March 7th. Dobson Ranch has many great amenities in our community.

Examples include; La Casita Recreation Center racquetball, tennis courts, and fitness equipment along the walking path at Laguna and Los Altos Park.

Come out and enjoy all of the great Dobson Ranch Recreation Programs and events in March and April.

Preschool is such a fun time in a child’s life. We get to paint, build, create, experiment, run (and run and run), dress up, get messy without a care in the world and learn! And folks wonder why I work with preschoolers. ☺ It is so much fun! One of my favorite things to do is come up with fun games that trick their little minds into actually learning new concepts.

Imagine a world where we could be taught everything in a creative, fun way. If you are interested in learning more about what I do in my class, visit me! I love to share my gift with families so they can in turn share with their little ones.

Here is one of my favorites that I made after collecting (way too many) snack pouch caps. These specifically are from the Costco applesauce.

DIY Lacing Beads Materials: • Caps with a hole (applesauce, baby food pouch work best) • Black Sharpie • Shoelace or yarn • Container to keep beads in Directions: I choose to write the alphabet, numbers 1-20 and shapes on my beads. You can leave them empty or come up with your own ideas.

Maybe write the letters of your child’s name? Depending on how many you collect. If you are using yarn to lace the beads add a little tape to the end to make a sturdy tip. This eases the beads a bit easier. Lacing beads will help with fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination and cognitive skills. Happy beading!

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available.

We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. If a rental request is within 10 business days there will be an expedited fee 2 times the rental amount. Reservations can be made at the La Casita Recreation Center and include a 14 day cancellation policy.

DR Pickleball “Love” Tournament A Huge Success

2017 Boat Permits and Fishing Licenses on Sale Now

The weather is perfect for outdoor activities, like le fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at exam p Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply).

Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses ple m a x are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors e only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four). Children 7 years and up require a license. For more information, please call the recreation department at 480-831-7464.

Recreation Committee Pickleball Representative

The 5th Annual DR Valentines Spectacular on February 11th was the biggest ever, with 10 mixed doubles teams (20 participants) on five courts for approaching 3 hours. It got to be a little warm as spring is emerging, so we are lucky to report all participants completed their matches, some of us dragging ourselves across the finish line! After battling out the nine games required to complete this roundrobin competition, the ultimate victory circle was commanded by our very own Commissioner of All of DR Pickleball, and Association Board President, Frank Mizner and his partner Natasha Thompson! All of the medalists are shown in the accompanying photo. Thanks again for a great tournament organized by Frank and Gina, who heads up the Gillies-Mizner Art Studios that again provided highly desired seasonal mementos for every participant.

The final contest this spring before the heat settles in has been tentatively scheduled for April Fool’s Day! Should be interesting….Stay tuned for the final results of this one! Maybe enough fools will turn out to use all six courts!

Until the heat drives us to adopt summer hours (as always, announced by email at the determination of the Commissioner’s Office), our drop-in play hours for the time being remain at 8 am, Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and night play Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm. Additional hours are available on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7 pm, which have an orientation towards beginning to intermediate players, but all are welcome.

Beginners are always welcome during group play and will receive basic instruction from regular participants and use of members extra paddles while getting introduced to the sport. Please wear appropriate court shoes, and be sure to bring enough water and sunscreen to insure a safe and healthy visit.

Remember, these courts are provided by the Dobson Association for members and their guests, and playing time is not limited to our published group-play hours. Another great benefit of homeownership in Dobson Ranch!

Topspin for the Win

It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that spin. Spin? Yes, spin! The name of the game today is topspin. Topspin is a high percentage, forward spin that players can impart on the ball to create havoc for their opponent. It allows you to swing more freely and play more aggressively with a greater margin for error. All sounds good, right? But how can you get topspin on a tennis ball?

There are many subtleties that go into a great topspin shot, but here are a few tips that will help you be on your way to high-rev ground strokes.

First, swing relaxed and fast. How many times have you heard a tennis coach say to swing quickly at the ball? Racquet head speed is crucial to a high-bouncing safe topspin shot, and staying relaxed is key to getting good racquet head speed without hurting yourself. The second tip is related to the speed of the racquet relative to the ball. I recommend brushing the back of the ball with a low to high swing. Doing this will impart the lift and the topspin we desire, giving you a safe shot that clears the net, dips deep into the court, and bounces high once it lands.

Next time you’re out on the court, try generating topspin on your ground strokes. I guarantee this will soon become a go-to weapon during your next tennis match.

Starry Skies at Dobson Ranch

The stars were aligned just right for Dobson Ranch… and the annual Stargazing event! Professional stargazers from Stargazing for Everyone (stargazingforeveryone.com) brought huge telescopes to view not only the stars, but the moon and planets too! Many Dobson Ranch residents viewed the night skies, watched a presentation and had all their celestial and planetary questions answered. This great event brings a crowd every year. Watch for details in upcoming Ranchers’ Roundups for the next Stargazing event.

Sunday Music in the Park Sunday, February 26 was a beautiful warm sunny afternoon and it was the perfect weather to be at Laguna Park. In fact, the park was brimming with Dobson Ranch residents who were picnicking, playing, and relaxing in lawn chairs… but most of all, they were all enjoying live music by The Triplicity Band.

Employee of the Month

The March employee of the month in the Recreation Department is Jessi Belisle! Her diligence and initiative has earned her this title for two consecutive months. Jessi has been a vital part of our training team by assisting in the training process for front desk staff. She thoroughly trains new employees and ensures they feel comfortable at the front desk. There are also many areas around the facilities that she has organized. We are always confident that Jessi will complete various tasks efficiently and accurately. Congratulations to Jessi on consecutive titles as employee of the month! We appreciate your hard work and initiative!

The Dobson Dolphin swim team is hiring coaches for the summer of 2017.

The swim team coaches help with all aspects of coaching a summer rec league. We are a strong community based swim team that strives to provide fun and structure for our swimmers in the Dobson Ranch community.

This time of year is very busy in these here parts. Our great winter weather makes it an ideal place for a lot of activities. So many are able to take advantage of this in order to make this time very enjoyable, and our DRR Club is a good example of that. Our bike rides, hikes, game days, breakfasts, lunches, trips, dinner’s out, picnics, and happy hours give us a chance to enjoy friends, food, beverages, and scenery.

All these events offer our membership opportunities to get involved in so many different activities in a social setting. Friendships are formed, and smiles are abundant.

Our monthly meetings are another way we enjoy some social time with friends. We get to hear what’s going on in the club, take advantage of the information provided by speakers, and enjoy delicious food brought to us by our very own members. This month’s lunch was pulled pork.

In our meeting we adopted changes to our bylaws. Our membership is undergoing rapid growth, and the bylaws needed updating to reflect what we are experiencing. We also selected new board members at this meeting. Names of those who have indicated that they wished to be board members were randomly drawn at the meeting.

Our new board members are Hugh Wooten, Al Prosek, Dennis Stewart, John Toevs, and Frank Saavedra.

Our HOA is doing a great job in providing classes that help make our lives a bit easier and more enjoyable. Recently a class on Balance was offered at La Casita. Many who attended the class are DRR members. It might be said that we want to do our best to keep things in balance. That balance keeps us involved with not just our club events but with several of the HOA events. Another way to enjoy our DRR living.

Fish Club

By Ed Ricci We had a pretty good winter of rain so far. It will certainly not relieve the Western drought we have suffered over the last decade. We need significantly more rain and particularly snow. But Roosevelt Lake which is the furthest upstream impoundment on the Salt River is on the rise again with the majority of the snowmelt yet to come. Another very big storm system- or two- in March would be nice.

Dobson Ranch Lake temperatures as of this writing is in the low 60s. The spawn is on and it will peak around the March and April full moons. Please release caught fish carefully so they can return to their beds for a successful spawn. From an activity standpoint, bass are optimally active around a water temperature of 68 degrees- so fishing should be awesome in March.

Our Dobson Ranch HOA is sponsoring the third Annual Adult Fishing Tournament on April 29. It is for ages 12 and older, and will be held at Lake 1. Categories include both shore as well as boat fishermen, and ages 12-18 and 18+. Fishermen must be Dobson Ranch residents, and each will be required to have and wear a Dobson Ranch Permit, which can be acquired at La Casita Rec Center. This is a free event with really nice prizes for top places in all categories. We received an additional sponsorship from Scott’s Appliance Service- 480-8236402. They are the best! The Dobson Pavement Pounders promotes running, walking and friendships in the Dobson Ranch and surrounding neighborhoods.

Whether you are a recreational walker, novice runner or advanced marathoner, this club offers support, weekly meetings and fellowship, afterwards, to keep you motivated and moving.

Currently, we meet in the Parking lot of Bisbee Breakfast Club at 7 a.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Wednesday. The location is on the corner of Guadalupe and Dobson at 2909 S. Dobson Rd. On Saturdays, we enjoy coffee at Bisbee’s after finishing our routes. Wednesday evenings we relax with refreshments, or adult beverages, at Cornish Pasty. No matter your level, come out and join us.

Congratulations to the World Series Champions Chicago Cubs!!! How Sweet it is after 108 years.!

It is that wonderful time with our great weather. This is the time of year when our Baseball fields are filled with fans from around our country. Try to take time to enjoy going to a Spring Training game.

We are in driving distance for 17 Major league teams.

Our General Meeting is held the fourth Tuesday of the month.

February’s meeting was a delicious cookie exchange and sharing our extra dozen with the Homeless. Thank you Patricia and Tanya.

We have such good cookie makers. We shared our recipes too.

Our Out to Lunch group meets the 1st Friday of the Month at various local restaurants. March 3rd. went to Firebirds Wood Grill in Chandler and had a very tasty lunch.

Our next luncheon will be April 7th. We are going to head to Maricopa. Elaine has invited us to her area. If you are interested, please call Chris at 480-820-2533.

March meeting will be on the 28th at 7:00 at La Casita. We have instructors coming from A. T. Still University. They will be talking about balance, flexibility and strength and ways that we can improve these. They are a very informed group and am sure they will have a lot of great information. Dr. Sonja Klinsky is an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability and a Senior Sustainability Scientists at the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability. Her work centers around the challenges presented by climate change. She has also looked at the politics, formation and justice implications of domestic climate policies, largely cap and trade systems, and has done research on public understanding of climate change and sustainability, including on public perceptions of climate justice dilemmas.

Oh those few brief weeks between freezing cold and blazing hot, what most other parts of the country call ‘spring’. For many of us this means the start of allergy season. Did you know that pets also experience allergies?

Many symptoms can be similar to what we suffer like sneezing and runny eyes, but some pets show their discomfort in other ways.

The most common symptom in pets with inhalant and contact allergies is Atopy. This is a condition that affects the skin, causing licking at the abdomen and paws, scratching at the face and eyes also inflammation of the ears. If untreated, atopy can progress into moist dermatitis, more commonly known as a hot spot which needs to be treated by a veterinarian. There are now several different medications available to help your fur baby cope with allergy season. Be sure to consult with your veterinarian to determine the best course of treatment for your pet.

A pet can develop a food allergy at any time, even if they have been eating the same food for years. The most common symptom is inflammation in the ears with chronic ear infections, general itchiness and the skin can appear red and inflamed. Unlike inhalant or contact allergies, once it 26 THE DOBSON ASSOCIATION 28

is diagnosed a food allergy is relatively easy to manage. The key is to find a limited ingredient diet that does not contain the allergen and being very strict about the food regimen.

Allergies are no fun for anyone! Be sure to contact your veterinarian with any questions you may have about helping your fur baby stay comfortable during this pollen-palooza

Last summer my truck would intermittently stall out but restart after about 5 mins. I took it to well respected Chandler shop but they could not find the problem (I do appreciate their honesty). So I went to Crawford’s Auto Repair and they found the problem and fixed it--my truck has been running great since then. I have also used them for preventive maintenance--they are honest and have reasonable prices. Plus they offer courtesy shuttle service! I highly recommend this shop. FYI--Crawford’s is a little tricky to find.

Kavanaugh Park A beautiful Association Park on the corner of Dobson and Isabella was dedicated and named Dennis Kavanaugh Park in honor of Dennis Kavanaugh on February 26, 2017. Mr. Kavanaugh lives in Dobson Ranch, has served on the Association Board of Directors, but is probably most well-known for his years of service as the District 3 Councilmember in the City of Mesa. Association President, Frank Mizner, welcomed the crowd and spoke about Mr. Kavanaughs achievements throughout the years. The monument sign was designed and constructed by the Association’s maintenance department and will be lit at night. Please take a moment to stop by and enjoy this great little park.

Academic Decathlon: Kelly Brown earned a gold medal in the Interview category and won the Outstanding Overall Interview trophy with a perfect score of 1000 points.

Dobson’s Advanced Chamber Choir, Da Capo, earned a superior rating in both the Jazz and the Madrigal categories at the 2017 NAU Jazz and Madrigal Festival.

Academic Decathlon: Anthony Contreras earned 3 medals: a silver in Music, a bronze in Speech, and a bronze in Science Scholarship Winners!

Jimmy Nguyen earned a full ride to Dartmouth, Monique Le Tran earned a full ride to Notre Dame, Daniel Hughes earned the Senator nomination for both Naval and USAF Academy, and Bailey Payne earned scholarships to The University of Findlay in Ohio for Pre-Veterinary Medicine.
