Association President

Voting for the 2018 Board of Directors will be electronic this year. Please review the candidate’s bios on pages 4 and 5. Notice of the Annual Meeting of the Members is on page 3. Electronic voting procedures will be mailed the first part of March.

The Associations Annual Meeting of Members will be held on April 10. If you are interested in running for the Board of Directors for the Dobson Association please submit your candidate form by February 20, so that your information is published in the March Newsletter and on the ballot. All candidates’ information is also posted on pages 4 and 5.

Each year, there are three seats available for a three-year term.

As you will see on pages 4 and 5, there are six community members that are currently running for the three seats. All members are homeowners and all but one live within Dobson Ranch. They have a desire to be a board member; supporting the Associations continued success.

This month’s Roundup is dedicated to the upcoming Annual Meeting of Members and focused on the electronic voting. The newsletter and website have important information on the electronic voting process.

In March the Association will be mailing each homeowner the annual meeting notice. Please be on the lookout for the mailing and don’t throw it away. Special information that allows you to view information and vote electronically is within the mailing. If you don’t receive the mailing by March 25, please contact the office.

Should you not have a computer, no problem. We will have a voting booth set up for you to use at the administration office located at the La Casita Center at 2719 S. Reyes. If you simply don’t use computers, you’re able to receive a paper ballot at the administration office.

The process is still a secret ballot. Overseeing the electronic process and counting the ballots is done by a third party. Election results are shared the night of the annual meeting.

As a Board of Director for the Association, Directors accept a new and challenging responsibility. These new and past board members will be making decisions that help the Association prosper. Their primary focus is on maintaining the Association, increasing property values and enriching community events. They accomplish this through myself and the professional staff of the Dobson Association and community volunteers. Board members view and create Association policies. These policies are created by a majority vote of the board, not by individuals acting alone. The Board appoints ADHOC committees for the purpose of dealing with special projects and functions. Committee’s recommendations are discussed and voted on at monthly board meetings. Through their dedication, our Board of Directors, are making Dobson Ranch the best place to live.

I called the January 18, 2018 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Here’s a recap…

First up was my Presidents report…last Saturday was the second annual Polar Plunge. Board member George Tihanyi joined myself along with 15 other participants and numerous spectators. It was a brisk morning and a nice event. Sponsored by Sprouts the event was a lot of fun, there was hot chocolate to warm everyone up, and we raised money for the local charity Autism Speaks. If you didn’t make it out this year be sure to join us next, it’s an enjoyable event all ages can participate in.

The Board will be having its 39th annual breakfast with Mesa City Council coming up in February. This annual meeting is hosted by the Association and is an important tradition we are fortunate to participate in; our association is the only one in the City of Mesa that has this opportunity. The meeting is a chance to share information, not only do we learn about projects going on in the City and specifically our area, we get to share all that is new on the Ranch. We are grateful to have this ongoing relationship with the City of Mesa.

BOARD MEETING Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? You can do all that at the Dobson Association Board of Directors meetings. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 7 pm at La Casita in the Grande room. The next dates are February 15 and March 15. All members are encouraged to attend. If you missed a meeting, you can get caught up with the President’s Message on page 1 or login to dobsonranch.com to read the minutes from previous meetings. HOLIDAY HOURS Administration and Recreation will be closed Monday, February 19th.

Resident fobs will work at Saratoga (pool and dock), Los Altos (pool) and all courts (tennis and pickleball).

FOBS ARE AVAILABLE Keyless entry fobs have replaced keys at Dobson Ranch common areas. Dobson Ranch homeowners or the designated agent can receive free of charge either two fobs or one fob and one smart phone app for the new keyless system. Visit dobsonranch.com to complete the Keyless System Agreement & Waiver form, or pick up a form at La Casita, prior to obtaining the fobs. Fobs will be available at La Casita Administration during normal business hours.

SARATOGA POOL AND LOS ALTOS LEISURE POOL The Board of Directors recently approved the renovations to the two pools. Work will start soon on the Saratoga Pool. During the renovation, please use the Los Altos lap pool or La Casita pool. We anticipate work to be done before summer for all to enjoy.

Call for Candidates Do you have time to volunteer and be a servant leader for Dobson Ranch? Then consider running as a candidate for the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors.

As a board member, several hours of your time each month will be devoted to Association business, special projects and committees.

The primary role of the Board is to conduct the business of the Association, not just by approving the budget, but also developing and enforcing policies. Board members are required to step outside their immediate circle of family and neighbors and make decisions based on the greater good of the community.

It isn’t all about policies and tough decisions. Our community is only as good as we make it; establishing and maintaining a sense of community is a part of a board member’s responsibility. Planning and attending functions and being a presence in the community are as important as policy decisions.

There are three seats open on the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors. Election results will be announced at the Annual Meeting of the Members on April 10, 2018.

Candidate bios will be printed in the January, February, and March 2018 issues of the Ranchers’ Roundup. The deadline to be in the March Roundup is February 20, 2018.

Being a board member can be challenging at times, but it may also be one of the most rewarding ways you’ll find to volunteer your time.

2018 Association Board of Directors Election to Utilize Online Voting The Dobson Association 2018 Board of Directors election will utilize online voting. Annual Meeting Notice and on-line election instructions will be mailed to homeowners with all the details the beginning of March.

Three positions will be open for a seat on the Board of Directors.

Please contact the administration office at 480-831-8314, if interested.

Voting helps to guide association policy and the future of your community. It is an important aspect of community living. Please vote and attend the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Members.

All electronic and paper ballots will be accepted for the 2018 Board of Directors election prior to April 10, 2018 at 6:00 pm.

2018 Assessments The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2018. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

We are also excited to announce that our new Caliber software has officially been launched. Please note, your new coupons reflect your new account number. Please be sure to reference this new account number when sending in payments.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and onetime payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Please contact our office if you need assistance with setting up your payment. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2018.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

What is your motivation for running for the Board of Directors?

I would be honored to continue serving YOU, the homeowner, as a member of the Dobson Ranch HOA Board of Directors; Representing your voice on matters that concern finances, growth and stability in our Ranch. In the past 7 years I have enjoyed serving the Ranch and its homeowners. I believe together we can continue to make this community the “best place to live” as well as attract new homeowners and businesses to our location. We have singles, couples, growing families, empty nesters, and retirees all living in the same neighborhoods. We are like an urban setting in the suburbs. Schools/ libraries, restaurants, grocery/retail stores are all within walking distance.

What activities, events, programs, and/or amenities do you enjoy at Dobson Ranch?

My family attends many of the activities on the Ranch. I think it is important as a Director to attend events and get feedback from Homeowners.

Some of my favorites are Winter Wonderland, the Halloween Spooktacular and the Easter Egg Hunt. I have also attended classes at La Casita including Yoga, Tai Chi, Tennis, and Swimming. My family enjoys walking the lakes as a relaxing activity or a work out.

As you look at the Dobson Ranch community, what specific challenges do you see facing the HOA? A critical issue that is facing our community is keeping Dobson Ranch attractive to new homeowners and nearby businesses. We must continue to take care of our facilities as well as keep a close relationship with nearby schools and businesses. We already have an amazing location, wonderful amenities, and a financially stable community, as well as a great relationship with the City of Mesa. Now it’s important to look forward to our future while keeping the stability of our past. I believe we can keep assessments low while continuing to update and maintain the Ranch. For the past 3 years the assessments have not been increased, while Dobson Ranch has continued to improve its facilities as well as its activities; A true win-win for everyone.

Autobiography: I am a USAF Veteran and REALTOR®. My family moved to Dobson Ranch 13 years ago due to its diversity, location, and family atmosphere. I have had the privilege to serve on the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors for the past 7 years. Two years as President and three years as Vice President. I have been involved in Dobson Ranch HOA Committee’s such as the Beautification Committee, Budget and Finance Committee, Marketing Committee, and Recreation Committee. My community involvement has included the PTA, the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Mesa Chamber of Commerce Women’s Council as well as other organizations. I believe in serving my country as well as my community.

The need to manage funding without creating new problems, now that the reserve fund is fully funded.

Autobiography: I have served 6 years on Board of Directors, now treasurer. Have chaired master planning, managed the end of wall project and reserve funding. I was actively involved in the pool deck renovations and other ongoing projects like the pending volleyball court replacement, and a meeting room at Los Altos, more boat slips and bathrooms at Laguna Park. I have an MBA from University of Phoenix. I am a retired small business owner.

Do you regularly attend Dobson Ranch HOA board meetings? No What is your motivation for running for the Board of Directors?

Although I have not been able to regularly attend Dobson Ranch meetings in the past due to work related travel I have always been interested in Ranch business affairs. In the past three decades I have lived on The Ranch, I have traveled over much of the world. I recognize what a special place Mesa and Dobson Ranch are. I want to help keep it that way.

What activities, events, programs, and/or amenities do you enjoy at Dobson Ranch?

I enjoy using the Parks on the Ranch and the Swimming Pool with my grandkids. I also appreciate the aesthetic beauty of a HOA community.

As you look at the Dobson Ranch community, what specific challenges do you see facing the HOA? The biggest challenge most “Mature Facilities” face is how to keep up with maintenance and needed improvements in a rising cost environment. Encouraging homeowners in the Ranch to maintain their property to meet the HOA Standards is an on-going engaging process. Considering the possibility of water shortages in our Arizona Desert, keeping our beautiful lake environment may be difficult in the future.

Autobiography: My family has lived in Arizona since 1889 when my GrandMother came here in a covered wagon from Colorado. My family has been involved in Retail, Mining, Railroading and Education in various parts of the state. My Mother was chosen “Arizona Teacher of the year” in 1984. I grew up in Central Phoenix attending West High School and Graduating from Arizona State. I worked in the Airline Industry for fifteen years and in Travel Agency management for fifteen more with Arizona AAA. For the past twelve years I have been V. P. of Operations and Marketing for a multi-part medical marketing corporation in Scottsdale. I have also been Co-Host of a radio show with Michael Dixon syndicated on CBS in multiple top ten markets. I have had many business area responsibilities with these companies including facility management, financial oversight, advertising and staffing.

Do you regularly attend Dobson Ranch HOA board meetings? Yes What is your motivation for running for the Board of Directors?

Dobson Ranch is a great place to live with many wonderful amenities. I would like to continue my role in leading the community forward by overseeing continued growth and future improvement, being part of the central decision-making on the major issues and by ensuring that the collect vision of the home-owners is fairly represented and maintain the high standards that the community is known for.

What activities, events, programs, and/or amenities do you enjoy at Dobson Ranch?

I have been involved in many activities such as toys for tots, boating on our lakes, swimming activities, and attending various community activities as well as mesa city activities.

As you look at the Dobson Ranch community, what specific challenges do you see facing the HOA? The greatest challenges are to keep Dobson Ranch moving forward as a progressive community while being mindful of the cost to the homeowners and residents as well as maintain a well-established partnership with the city of Mesa.

Autobiography: I have been a Dobson Ranch resident for 29 years. My 34 year career has encompassed being an educator in economics, political science and history, director of continuing community education. I was director of site operations for Rio Salado College. My focus was maintaining high standards of academics, managing multiple physical operations at all college sites and supervising over 75 people. I have been an active volunteer for charity for over 20 years including fundraising activities for Sunsounds of Arizona radio station servicing the visually challenged and for KJZZ-KBAC. As a board member for the last three years, I have served on the water management committee, as well as two ad hoc committees dealing with employee benefits and revision of by-laws, common area guidelines and residential guidelines. I am currently chairing the master planning committee. I have actively, for the last three years, supported a freeze on homeowner fees.

Annual Meeting Raffle Each year there is a raffle at the annual meeting for homeowners that attend the meeting. Raffle prizes are donated by Association vendors. This year we would like to extend this opportunity to those that are unable to attend.

All raffle prizes will be drawn from those who have voted electronically or by paper ballot on or before April 6. Winners will be notified at the annual meeting or the next day and be posted in the May Ranchers’ Roundup.

Prizes range from $25 to $100 gift cards, *$199 WiFi smart irrigation controller and gift baskets. Vote early to be added into the raffle.

All electronic and paper ballots will be accepted for the 2018 Board of Directors election prior to April 10, 2018 at 6:00 pm. *Smart controller is donated from the Water Management Committee. Controller includes install at home within Dobson Ranch. Cannot be installed outside of Dobson Ranch. This is part of the Dobson Ranch Water Conservation program.

Somewhere over the rainbow, as taken from the favorite song of the 20th century, suggests a bright time somewhere, like right here. We know bright quite well, it happens a lot; for 116 days last year it was bright enough to push the temperature over 100ËšF. We are used to those kinds of days and we know how to cope.

We also know how to keep our lawns, landscape and household plants in good shape to handle the challenge of bright sunshine. The first step of course is to choose the right plants, plants adapted to the desert. Orange trees, roses and others will survive given enough water, though that is not the best strategy to use in the desert. There are grasses that will thrive in the desert summer, but few can handle the winters. Managing these plants can demand a lot of attention. The Ranch has revamped its irrigation practices over the past decade to efficiently manage the landscape of the common areas. And many residents have followed that lead.

We also have the help of our water utility, the City of Mesa, and our water management community, the Salt River Project. They provide guidance and education on how to live in the desert. They have helped the Ranch reduce its water consumption in irrigating our common areas by as much as 10 million gallons a year. Again, this year, SRP will hold their own Water Expo on March 3rd featuring water conservation tips, education and new smart controllers at reduced prices. A new irrigation controller will be offered - one that connects via Wi-Fi for remote control. The Ranch has one, a Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller that, once setup reports the amount of water used weekly to a phone app. In addition, SRP will still be offering the Rainbird Smart Controller offered last year; each at $50.

Look for the SRP 11th Annual Water Conservation flyer in your in your electricity bill. Attend their Water Expo on March 3rd and attend our Spring Expo at La Casita on April 7th. See you there. Remember, conserving water is a community activity - one household at a time.

Held on the first Saturday of every month at our Clubhouse, we’ve had great success and have started adding additional activities. Our most recent social gathering for homeowners and their pets, DOG DAYS AFTERNOON. We had 30 plus homeowners and pets enjoy a fun afternoon.

Mark your calendar for the Dobson Ranch Spring Expo on Saturday, April 7th! Dobson Ranch’s Water Management Committee is hosting the 2nd annual Spring Expo, a conservation-themed event that is open to all residents and guests. This is your opportunity to meet with representatives from SRP, City of Mesa, MCC, Dobson Ranch Library, and area businesses to learn ways to conserve natural resources and save money. For example, limiting showers to five minutes can save up to 12,000 gallons of water a year.

The event runs from 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. in front of La Casita. The Spring Expo is held in conjunction with the Retiree’s Club Pancake Breakfast so bring the entire family. There will be crafts and activities for the kids, and an Art Show by students of La Casita Preschool.

Also, back by popular demand, a live ladybug release will take place at 10:30. A great beneficial insect to the low desert, ladybugs eat soft-bodied insects, the pest insects that cause unsightly damage to plants. The ladybugs released at La Casita will provide natural pest control.

Message from the Recreation Director

The recreation department welcomes you to 2018 programs and events coming up. First off is Stargazing on February 23rd at Laguna Park. Come out for a short presentation and look through some unique telescopes.

Bring your cell phone for a great picture of the moon. In March we have Movie in the Park on Friday, March 9th at Laguna Park at sunset (about 6:45 pm). We will be showing the movie “Lego Nijago”. Bring your family and friends for a free movie, popcorn and our sponsor Valhalla will be bringing free nachos and hotdogs while supplies last. Next up is Spring Break Camp which will be held March 12th-16th at Saratoga Recreation Center. If you are looking for something for the kiddos to do when they are on break…look no further. We will be introducing some new activities and will have lots of fun throughout the week. It’s also that time of year for some spring cleaning. Join us for our Garage Sale, Clean Up and Shred on Saturday, March 17th. Easter is coming early this year, so mark your calendar. The recreation department is having two Easter events again this year. The Tween Egg Hunt, which is geared for those teenagers in your life, is on Friday night March 30th.

We will also be having our family event, Easter Eggstravaganza, on Saturday, March 31st at Laguna Park.

The Saratoga Recreation Center pool and Los Altos Leisure pool will be getting renovated the beginning of February and ending towards the end of March. La Casita Recreation Center pool and Los Altos Recreation Center Jr Olympic pool will remain open during this time.

Last but not least, stop by La Casita to pick up your 2018 magnetic calendar because we have lots of events coming up fast and they will be here before you know it. Hope to see you all there!

Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. Table and chair rentals request are made during administration hours (except for holidays) at La Casita Recreation Center.

We’ve been keeping quite busy in preschool since the new year began. This past month we celebrated our friendship and love and learned about our wonderful 5 senses. Did you know we started registration for our summer program and for the 2018-19 school year? If you are interested in signing up now is the time to come in and get your preschooler signed up! Spaces are limited.

Did you ever play the game telephone when you were a kid? How about making a telephone with tin cans? The kids in my classes LOVE this activity. Dig in to your recycling bin and make one!

Materials: 2 tin cans String Scissors Nail/Hammer Stickers and/or washi tape Directions: Using the nail and hammer poke a hole thru the bottom of both cans. Tie the string from each hole. Decorate! Now you are ready to send secret messages to your pal!

Darn Cold Lately, But DR Pickleball PLAYS ON!

Dobson Ranch Picklers have not been deterred by some cold winter mornings and evenings, and regular play forges on. Turnout on New Year’s Day was exceptional with over 20 players engaged in implementing their resolution to play more pickleball.

No rainouts (probably unfortunate as we need some moisture), but those coming out sometimes look overdressed! Four layers of clothing, gloves and winter hats have occasionally been reported….

Others, however, continue to show up in shorts with a sweatshirt, or not! Apparently the key is to keep moving!!

Next up is our 5th Annual Valentine’s Day tournament on Saturday, February 10th at 8 am. The standard format of eight doubles teams in a round-robin competition. The usual prizes will be awarded and USAPA rules govern, with some local variations. If you haven’t taken one of these in, you have missed the greatest pickleball exhibitions in all of The Ranch. Come out and see for yourself why this is the fastest growing sport in America.

Los Altos “Drop-In” Play times continue through the “winter” with 8 am start times on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and an evening session on Tuesday at 6:30 pm. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply). Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits.

The Retiree’s Club is now in its 20th year!

Our founders, Myron and Jean Brown started the club in 1999 and now has 160+ members!

January 2018 started with our Monthly Meeting which included a lively Silent Auction to support our local teachers in need to supply school supplies at Brooker T. Washington School on the Ranch. We then had an Italian Feast compliments of our Hospitality Committee.

Fishing Club

The water in our lakes is warming, and sooner this year than others because of a very warm winter. In mid-January, lake temperatures were around 60 degrees in the morning and 64 degrees in the afternoon, and they will only go higher from here. That means the game fish will become increasingly more active and we will see some spawning Bass as early as mid - February. If you look along our lake shorelines in the middle of an afternoon on a sunny day, you will see Bass here and there positioning along the shoreline.

These are fish which are staging to spawn.

So, what does this all mean? Fishing has been tough in December, and early January. But as fish prepare for the spawn, they will be both defending their territories more aggressively as well as feeding up for the spawn itself. Expect much better fishing. Reaction baits like crankbaits will again be effective. Plastic presentations like drop shot, Texas rig, and shaky head rigs will start catching Bass, as well as Senko presentations. (If you don’t know what any of this fishing jargon means, please Google it.) Catfishing and Bluegill fishing should likewise be good.

It’s a new year so please remember to get your Dobson Ranch fishing permit at La Casita Rec Center. Remember to practice catch and release and good luck fishing!

“Making a Difference in 2018” is the theme of the March 1 meeting of the Dobson Ranch Republicans, with special guest Leslie White, who has been energizing grassroots involvement in Western states since 2012 for Americans for Prosperity. Arcadia Color Garden Nursery is one of the Valley’s newest spots. At the March 6 Garden Club meeting, which begins at 7:00 p.m. at La Casita, we will be “introduced” to this nursery.

The nursery features flowers, vegetables, shrubs, cacti, trees and more. It is owned and operated by former Baker nursery employees who are eager to support the community with landscape and plant knowledge. It offers all the wonderful and different plant species that could previously be found at Bakers.

Awards and Achievements: Varsity Cheer and Advanced Hip Hop earned first place at the Spring it On Cheer and Dance Competition!

Michael Botchway and Brandon Islas are Dobson’s QuestBridge Scholars. They have earned Full Scholarships to Northwestern University and Rice University Cailee Benford was named a Wendy’s High School Heisman winner. She will move on to the chance to be a State Finalist!

Dobson High School has been selected to participate in the Gilder Lehrman Institute’s Hamilton Education Program on 2/23/2018! Thanks to a partnership between Hamilton, local donors, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, we are able to offer our eleventh grade American history classes exclusive participation in the program, which combines Founding Era classroom resources, and a special student matinee at ASU Gammage!

SRP 11th Annual Water Conservation Expo Valley residents will learn how to save water and money by participating in the Water Conservation Expo, recognized by customers and exhibitors as one of the Valley’s best water-themed events. Over the past 10 years, the SRP Water Expo has grown to become the largest one-day distribution event of Rain Bird “smart” irrigation controllers in the nation.

The free expo’s main draw is the discount on smart irrigation controllers, which use weather data to automatically determine daily watering run times and, when correctly installed, programmed and maintained, can deliver water savings of at least 20 percent over traditional controllers.

If you are looking for a great locally owned guitar store, we have one called ZIMM’S GUITARS right in the neighborhood! They specialize in quality used guitars and supplies. We were looking for a reasonably priced UKULELE and stopped in to check. The owner Dane Zimmerman was very friendly, helpful, and we purchased a beautiful Hawaiian made Lanikai! The price was great! The sound is awesome! The store is set up nice and it looked like a surprising number of instruments displayed beautifully. He also offers lessons. He is located at 2121 West Guadalupe Rd, suite 1, Mesa AZ, at the South West corner of Dobson and Guadalupe at the Goodwill Shopping Center.

Keep an updated home inventory in a safe place, include serial numbers and pictures, where possible.

Lighting is the number one crime prevention tool - Leave a light on over your house numbers to assist in the event of an emergency - lights should never leave shadows in walkways.

Use landscape as a crime prevention tool - keep bushes trimmed up from the bottom and down from the top to discourage someone from using them to hide behind. Planting thorny bushes in front of windows will discourage someone from using that as an entry to your home.

Sonoran Safari Highlights Desert Beauty Discover the beauty of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert this spring at the i.d.e.a. Museum. Sonoran Safari lets visitors explore the artistic landscape of the world’s 11th largest desert through art and hands-on activities geared at exploring and understanding the natural landscape that surrounds us.

The exhibition, opened Feb. 9, features 25 Arizona and national artists, as well as an artist from the Czech Republic. Artworks include digital photography, bronze and steel sculptures, ceramics, paintings, mixed media and more.

The exhibition – which runs through May 27, 2018 - is sponsored

by The Grainger Foundation, a private and independent foundation; the i.d.e.a. Museum Board of Directors Inc.; the City of Mesa and the Arizona Commission on the Arts, which receives support from the state of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Admission is $9 for ages 1 and up; free for museum members and younger than 1. More museum activities: ideaMuseum.org.

Amateur Photography Contest at Mesa Public Library Dust off your tripods and polish your lenses! Mesa Public Library’s annual amateur photography contest begins Wednesday, Jan. 24 for adults and Monday, Feb. 19 for teenagers 14 to 17 (or 18 if not yet a high school graduate).

Both groups can submit photographs in two categories: Mesa Views - photos that are taken in or related to Mesa. They can be photos of places, people, events or symbols that embody Mesa.

A Different Perspective - photos that show something in a new way such as from a different point of view or vantage point.

All entrants must submit a digital and print copy of their photographs. Semi-finalists will be determined partially by popular vote. You can vote online or in person at the adult exhibits Saturday, Feb. 24 and the teen exhibits Saturday, March 17. All the exhibits will be held at the Main Library, Red Mountain Library, Dobson Ranch Library and Mesa Express Library from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

City of Mesa Crime Prevention

Police Stations to Serve as Transaction Locations Every day, hundreds of citizens visit online marketplaces through websites or apps to sell and trade goods and services. Eventually these transactions lead to a physical exchange with a stranger. The Mesa Police Department is offering our police stations as transaction locations where these online purchases can be exchanged. Instead of inviting a stranger to your home or visiting a stranger in their home, we encourage citizens to take advantage of our police stations as open public spaces.

Each station will have a clearly visible “Transaction Location” sign on its premises with the inside lobby hours clearly posted on the sign. There is one exterior parking lot Transaction Location, as well as an interior lobby location for each Police station. For increased safety, citizens can exchange online purchases inside the lobby within the posted open lobby hours (Monday – Thursday, 8 am – 4 pm). The Mesa Police Department is not responsible for purchases or transactions.

Truth about Teeth!

We all love getting kisses from our four legged fur babies, but when they go for the smooch and knock you over with their stinky breath this might be an indication of dental disease. February is Pet Dental Health Month to help educate pet owners and increase the awareness of periodontal disease. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have symptoms of dental disease by age 3. If left untreated severe dental disease can lead to heart disease, gastrointestinal issues, lung disease, and kidney disease. If brushing the teeth at home is not working, a professional dental cleaning under anesthesia will be needed for your fur baby. Remember that pets are very good at hiding pain! Some indications of periodontal disease are excessive drooling, pawing at the face, being hesitant to eat, any swelling on the face, or abnormal coloration in the saliva. Talk to your veterinarian about your fur baby’s teeth and have them formulate a treatment plan with you to have the dental care they need.

Free Arts Experiences for Caregivers – Explore, Network, Learn Mesa Arts Center will offer arts experiences exclusively for caregivers, for those who are often fully engaged in caring for an ailing loved one. Participants will have the opportunity to integrate learning about the advancement of dementia while engaging in interactive arts classes.

Each session includes a hands-on, 60-minute arts experience, a social break and a 20-minute information session on the latest research in dementia and tips for engaging a loved one. Registration is open now and available by calling 480644-6564 or by emailing engagement@mesaartscenter.com.

Caregivers who require support of their caregiving role while attending a session may be able to avail of free respite care for their loved one, thanks to a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association Desert Southwest Chapter. Update on City Street Lights

If you have driven or walked around the Ranch at night recently, you may have noticed a different type of street light. The older, mercury vapor-type of lights are being replaced by state-of-the-art LED fixtures.

When the Ranch infrastructure was built 40-45 years ago, poles were “direct buried”; that is, sunk directly in the ground with no concrete base.

This resulted in significant rusting and structural damage. The poles were also not galvanized, requiring periodic repainting. We had the same situation with our Association lights in common areas.

The City has conducted a systematic assessment of all public street light poles and will be replacing them with galvanized, concrete base poles. Adjacent homeowners are always given prior notice. This process will likely take several years.

At the same time, the bulbs themselves will be replaced. The new LED lights actually produce the same amount of light as the mercury lights.

The LED fixture “appears” brighter due to the difference in color (orangish vs bluish). The new poles will be galvanized on a concrete base, also reducing maintenance costs. The actual wattage is less than half meaning greatly reduced electricity usage and cost. The Association is underway The City offers two-related benefits. If you are having a problem with pigeons and the resultant messy sidewalk, the City will install plastic “bird spikes”. If you have what you feel is excessive glare from a street light, they will install a small metal “shield” to direct the light onto the street. Both devices are very effective.
