With the cooler temperatures, there’s been a lot of activity on the Ranch. In October, we had the well-attended Fishing Derby and Outdoor Expo, Fall Break Camp, Clean, Shred and Garage Sale and Halloween.

Halloween was a blast due to the very large attendance. It was great to see kids (and adults) dressed up for the event. Check out the photos on page 18 and 19.

I participated in the in the 5th Annual Pre-Halloween Pickleball tournament. I was paired with Jan, who is a great partner.

Unfortunately, I was not so good. Thank you all for having me. It was fun!

In October, a few members of the Board of Directors met City of Mesa Councilmember Francisco Heredia. It was a great meeting!

In November, CM Heredia had a breakfast for the community at the Dobson Ranch Firehouse. It was a good turnout. Many from Dobson Ranch enjoyed food and friendly conversations with the new councilmember.

I also visited The Landings coffee. The Board President of The Landings, Corliss, invited the residents of their community for coffee and donuts. Corliss informed me and others that there will be construction and painting within their lovely community. It was nice of her and the Board to invite me.

At the Retiree meeting on November 6, Mayor John Giles came by to give an update on the City and to introduce CM Heredia. I was told that he came by for just the turkey that the Retirees were serving.

Coming up is Breakfast with Santa. In the Table of Contents you will see Recreation Director Jesse Wright and family posing with Santa. This is a great family event to attend along with many others that are planned for this year; read the Recreation Happenings for more details.

I called the October 19, 2017 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Here’s a recap…

First up was my President’s Report…the Board and staff recently met with our newly appointed District 3 Councilmember Francisco Heredia. It was a friendly meeting over lunch at a local establishment. Councilmember Heredia is extremely busy, being pulled in many different directions, having just started the position. Thank you Councilmember Heredia for taking the time to meet with us and learn more about Dobson Ranch; we value our relationship with the City of Mesa and look forward to working with you. During this meeting we learned that work will resume on the irrigation project along Dobson between highway 60 and Baseline Road, ground cover and trees will also be added to these areas in conjunction with the project.

This week the Association received a nice complimentary letter from homeowner Pam Waterman. Thank you Mrs. Waterman for taking the time to communicate the things you see happening around the Ranch (please see page 4). It’s notes like these that keep all of us on the Board and staff going.

Under “New Business” the Board discussed and adopted the 2018 budget with a zero percent increase to assessments. Page 3 of this month’s Roundup summarizes the budget for 2018.

It’s hard to believe it is that time of year again; we are preparing for the Board of Directors election in April 2018. Three open seats will be available on our Board. If you have questions regarding this rewarding volunteer opportunity, please reach out to the Administration office at 480-831-8314 for more information.

Candidates are needed; December 20th is the deadline to have your candidate biography published in the January 2018 edition of the Roundup. Biographies will be printed starting in January thru March. Contact us today for more information.

Another great volunteer opportunity is available on our Architectural Committee. There is one opening on this busy committee, applications are being taken through December 1, 2017.

A Message From the Editor

There are a lot of things to do to celebrate winter and some of them take place right here in Dobson Ranch!

Winter Wonderland is coming up on December 2nd, with snow, games, activities, and a lighted boat parade.

Jolly ol Santa Claus will take a break from the North Pole on December 9th and join us at Breakfast. There are two seatings for Breakfast with Santa and it is always a sold-out event, so sign up soon! If you missed the first lighted boat parade, there will be a repeat the evening of December 9th.

These cool winter events are a pleasure to attend and sure to delight everyone young and old. More information about these activities and more can be found in the recreation section of this issue and on dobsonranch.com.

This is a wonderful time of year to be generous and cheer up a child.

La Casita is a drop off location for the City of Mesa toy drive that benefits the patients at Cardon Children’s Medical Center. New toys may be dropped off through November 29th. Details about the toy drive can be found on page 26 of this issue.

Board of Directors Adopt Amended Documents Amended versions of the Residential Architectural Guidelines and the Common Area Guidelines were adopted by the Dobson Association Board of Directors, on August 17, 2017. These documents may be viewed on the website, dobsonranchhoa.com, or may be picked up at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes, 85202.

Please note: the provisional grace period for temporary parking has changed.

2.9.2 TEMPORARY PARKING Mobile homes, motor homes, boats, recreational vehicles, trailers, campers or other similar vehicles shall not be parked on any public street or on any residential lot except for periods of up to forty-eight (48) hours within seven (7) consecutive days for the purposes of loading, unloading, and cleaning such vehicles. The Association must be notified in writing of the necessity and timeframe beforehand. Such vehicles may not be occupied by guests or any persons and should be parked as to not create an obstruction. This provisional grace period is a courtesy, revocable if misused.

Call for Candidates Do you have time to volunteer and be a servant leader for Dobson Ranch? Then consider running as a candidate for the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors.

As a board member, several hours of your time each month will be devoted to Association business, special projects and committees.

The primary role of the Board is to conduct the business of the Association, not just by approving the budget, but also developing and enforcing policies. Board members are required to step outside their immediate circle of family and neighbors and make decisions based on the greater good of the community.

It isn’t all about policies and tough decisions. Our community is only as good as we make it; establishing and maintaining a sense of community is a part of a board member’s responsibility. Planning and attending functions and being a presence in the community are as important as policy decisions.

There are three seats open on the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors. Election results will be announced at the Board of Directors Annual Meeting on April 10, 2018.

Candidate bios will be printed in the January, February, and March 2018 issues of the Ranchers’ Roundup. The deadline to be in the January Roundup is December 20, 2017.

Fish Stocking The Dobson Ranch lakes were recently stocked with Minnow’s, Bluegill, Red ear, Bass and Catfish. The “working” fish were distributed among the lakes and will help keep the lakes clean.

2018 Association Board of Directors Election to Utilize Online Voting

The Dobson Association 2018 Board of Directors election will utilize online voting. A postcard will be sent to homeowners with all the details at the end of February, 2018. More information will be included in future Ranchers’ Roundups.

Three positions will be open for a seat on the Board of Directors.

Candidates are needed. Please contact the administration office at 480-831-8314, if interested.

Voting helps to guide association policy and the future of your community. It is an important aspect of community living. Please vote and attend the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Members and Celebration.

THINGS TO KNOW BOARD MEETING Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? You can do all that at Dobson Association Board of Directors meetings. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7 pm at La Casita in the Grande room. The next dates are November 16, December 21 and January 18. All members are encouraged to attend. HOLIDAY HOURS Administration and Recreation will be closed on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 for Thanksgiving.

Administration will be closed December 25th and 26th. Recreation will be open on December 24th from 10 am - 2 pm and closed on December 25th. Recreation will be open on December 26th.

FOBS ARE AVAILABLE Keyless entry fobs are replacing keys at Dobson Ranch common areas. Dobson Ranch homeowners or the designated agent can receive either two fobs or one fob and one smart phone app for the new keyless system. Homeowner key access will continue through November 30, 2017. Please obtain your fobs prior to November 30.

DRY-UP This year SRP will be cleaning other parts of the canal system and will not need to curtail water deliveries to the Ranch. The Ranch depends upon the annual dry-up to maintain the lakes and shelves. To stay on schedule, the curtailment of water delivery during this period will happen again this winter. Work on the Lake 1 shelf repair will start this year on December 11th and will run through February 28, 2018, all subject to weather conditions. Association Staff will work between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Expect to see the water levels drop in Lakes 1, 2 and 3. The water level in the downstream lakes may correspondingly drop. To what extent these drop will depend a lot on how much rain is received during the maintenance period.

Annual Dry-Up

This year we will be deviating from the usual end-of-year Salt River Project canal dry-up. Usually, SRP shuts down the canals that bring water to our lakes in order to clean and repair the canals.

The canals accumulate all kinds of debris that can clog the gate valves that controls the flow of water to our lakes. This year SRP will be cleaning other parts of the canal system and will not need to curtail water deliveries to the Ranch.

The Ranch also depends upon the annual dry-up to maintain the lakes and shelves. In addition, there is an ongoing maintenance program on the Lake 1 shoreline. The work on the Lake 1 shoreline started in 2009 on the south side of the lake. During each December, January and February of 2009 and each succeeding year, significant progress has been made upgrading the shelf. Last year, the first part of the shoreline on the north side of Lake 1 was started with the plan to finish one third of the work in each of three dry-up periods. To stay on schedule, the curtailment of water delivery during this period will happen again this winter. Work will start this year on December 11th and will run through February 28, 2018, all subject to weather conditions. Association Staff will work between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Expect to see the water levels drop in Lakes 1, 2 and 3. Typically, during the normal SRP dry-up, the water level in each lake drops to expose the lake shelves allowing the Association staff to remove the accumulated debris. While the shelves are exposed this year, please be mindful that the low water levels offer additional paths for children and pets to wander. Please keep your children and pets off the lake shelves.

Letter to the Editor

I just wanted to say what a great job the Dobson Ranch HOA group continues to do for all of us residents. The landscaping (constantly being refreshed), the helpful newsletter and all the great events, especially for children, all make DR the best place to live in Phoenix. My family has been here for 18 years; recently we downsized houses, but it was a given that our new house would still be in Dobson Ranch.

Thanks for all that the DR staff and committees do to keep everything beautiful and humming along.

PS I love all the new cut-metal signs – so distinctive and sharp-looking. Great idea and execution.

2018 Assessments

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2018. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

We are also excited to announce that our new Caliber software has officially been launched. Please note, your new coupons reflect your new account number. Please be sure to reference this new account number when sending in payments.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone.

Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

3. 3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and one-time payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”.

Please contact our office if you need assistance with setting up your payment. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2018.

4. 4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

The blazing Arizona summer heat is behind us and rye grass is flourishing.

Dobson Ranch Garage Sale, Clean-up and Shred

Home & Garden

Dobson Ranch is a bit more beautiful after the recent clean-up. Residents bought and sold treasures at garage sales, vehicles filled the City of Mesa dumpsters with 14.40 tons of landfill material and green waste. While all that was taking place, boxfuls of documents were shredded. The next clean-up will be March 17, 2018, so watch for details in upcoming issues of the Ranchers’ Roundup and on dobsonranch.com.

Holiday Lights and Decorations Guidelines for holiday lights and decorations can be found in the Residential Architectural Guidelines. The full document may be picked up at the administration office, 2719 S. Reyes or viewed and downloaded online at dobsonranch.com. Questions can be answered by calling 480-831-8314.

SECTION 2.10 HOLIDAY LIGHTS AND DECORATIONS Holiday decorations will not require approval if installed no earlier than thirty (30) days before a holiday and removed no later than twenty-one (21) days after a holiday. Any variation from these time periods will require approval of the ACC. The ACC reserves the right to request reasonable modifications to holiday decorations if deemed appropriate.

For many, many years the residents of Laguna Village (a subassociation one block west of Dobson south of Keating) have celebrated by placing luminarias throughout their entire neighborhood on Christmas Eve. This year is no exception. Once again, more than 1,000 luminarias will be in place, with the lighting to begin at dusk.

I am happy to announce that our Fall Break Camp was a success. A special thank you to Ave’ and Recreation staff for working the camp and making it enjoyable for the kids, you guys did a great job. The weather is finally starting to cool off and December is right around the corner. We have some exciting programs to end the year. The Winter Wonderland program is on December 2nd at Saratoga Recreation Center. Kid activities from 1:30-3:30pm including snow, crafts, and games. Evening activities are 6:30-8:30pm include hot cocoa and cookies, carolers and lighted boat parade. Breakfast with Santa is on December 9th at La Casita Recreation Center. Tickets are on sale now for the event space is limited. Please come out and support our community.

Fishing licenses and boat permits for 2018 will be going on sale December 1st. Prices will remain the same this year. Fishing Licenses will be $13 for individuals (seven years of age and older) and $30 for a family of four. Boat permits are $15 for non-motorized and $35 for motorized watercrafts. Stop by La Casita to purchase your licenses or permits.

Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. Table and chair rentals request are made during administration hours (except for holidays) at La Casita Recreation Center.

Fishing Derby/Outdoor Expo

5th Annual Pre-Halloween Pickleball Invitational Kicks Off Fall/Winter Season

October 14th we held our first tournament of the fall with 8 mixed doubles teams battling it out for 2 and ½ hours.

After 7 spirited games of round-robin play we ended up with a 3-way tie for first place! Very tough competition out there!! Many snacks were consumed, and you can see in the picture everyone got a festive decoration in celebration of the occasion.

Los Altos Drop-In Play times have moved to “winter hours”: 8 am start times on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, with an evening session on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.

In hopes of getting more new players out, we are also dedicating courts 5 and 6 at Los Altos on Tuesday night and Saturday mornings to beginners and developing players so they may play with similarlyminded new players in a friendly social environment for learning and enjoying the sport. Experienced players will be available to provide informal instruction and offer tips to developing players. Everyone is welcome! Paddles and balls will be provided.

We also have regular social play resuming as we enter the cool season on Monday and Thursday nights at 6:30, coordinated by Donna Moran . Pickle-On!!

Under a sunny morning sky about 100 children along with their families and friends participated in this year’s Fishing Derby and Outdoor Expo. A fish tank was stocked with fish for the young fishermen while others fished in the lake. Several vendors were available with goods and services, and the view was spectacular during the pontoon boat rides. Thanks to the Dobson Ranch Recreation Department and the Fish Club for another awesome event.

2018 Boat Permits and Fishing Licenses on Sale It’s always a great time for fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply).

Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four).

Halloween Spooktacular

It was a Howling good night for over 2,000 goblins, ghouls, kids and adults at the recent Dobson Ranch Halloween Spooktacular.

Goodies bags were handed out as the excited trick or treaters made their way down the sidewalk collecting candy from 16 clubs, committees and vendors. Captain James made some awesome balloon shapes, the Lakeshore Mortuary crew drove up in their hearse and took free photos, and there were bounce houses and carnival games. Scary, cute and original costumes were represented in the costume contest sponsored by Dairy Queen.

Yummy food was for sale by Boca Taco and Konos. Even when darkness crept in the festivities continued with movie time in the park and the showing of Lego Batman. Thanks to the Dobson Ranch Recreation Department, the vendors, sponsors, volunteers, clubs and committees that helped make this a spectacular Spooktacular! This is an annual event and just one of the many reasons that makes it great at Dobson Ranch!

Retirees Club

We have a great group with our retirees, we have fun, we laugh, we eat too much but we have fun and get to be with friends and neighbors. And this is just our club.

There are so many things to do and volunteer for on the Ranch it is wonderful and all our friends who elsewhere are jealous of our activities.

We had a great time at the Duke’s, (thank you for hosting) for our Octoberfest. It was not only fun but again the food was great! What a great backyard!

October also brought us Spooktacular, and if you have not been to it, you are missing out, the kids are fabulous and so much fun. You can just come and watch or you can volunteer at our table to hand out treats and just watch all the activities.

November, we had our Thanksgiving theme meeting and the turkey and all the fixings were great all always, nobody went away hungry. We do like to eat.

We have our picnics starting up, hiking, biking will also soon begin again. This is a great time of the year to live in the valley! We have it all.

We have a great club and the only thing missing is more volunteers. The clubs are not hard they are fun, you get to go to new places and be with friend, or make new ones.

Think about it, we could use you!

Fishing Club

What a wonderful Kid’s Fishing Tournament we had on Saturday October 7. The event really embodies many of the reasons we live in Dobson Ranch- active Ranchers, community comradery, HOA support, children smiling, and plain fun. This was the 7th year that the Fish Club has supported the event. We are happy and proud to do it. The little kid’s fish tank constructed by Bass Club members was the hot place to be!

Bluegill were being pulled out about every five minutes by the little ones. So much fun!! Free raffle gifts were presented every 15 minutes over the course of three hours. Thanks to Sportsman’s Warehouse in Gilbert for providing the grand prizes. And special thanks to Scott McAtee and Ric Hoks- two of my comrades in the Bass Club. They set up, monitored, and dismantled all the equipment and tankage. Thanks guys!!!

Fishing has been good, and it should continue to be good into December. But it’s fishing, not always catching. So, there are also some slow times. One day you can get on a pretty good crank bait bite. Every now and then you can get them on topwater baits including frogs and flukes. Then, the reaction bite disappears, and you need to convert to small swimbaits or other plastics using a dropshot, shakey head, or Texas rig.

When the going gets tough, it always pays off to slow down.

Fishing is always like solving a puzzle and the Dobson Ranch lakes give us a great resource and opportunity to practice and enjoy. Happy fishing.

U.S. Navy Capt. Steve Ferrara (Ret.), a medical doctor and candidate for U.S. House in Congressional District 9, will be the guest speaker at the Dec. 7 meeting of the Dobson Ranch Republicans, 6:30-8 p.m. at Native Grill & Wings, 1837 W Guadalupe Road, Suite 122. Dr. Ferrara, a Phoenix native and Republican, is seeking the seat currently held by Kyrsten Sinema, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Jeff Flake.

Dr. Ferrara enlisted in the Navy during Operation Desert Storm and served a number of deployments in Afghanistan, Africa, Indonesia and the Middle East. He served on Capitol Hill as National Academy of Sciences Congressional Health Policy Fellow on the Energy and Commerce Committee, where he authored legislation ensuring quality of care for Medicare patients. Ferrara also has served as the Navy’s Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Chief of Medical Operations. After retiring from the Navy in 2016 Ferrara went to work at the Phoenix VA Hospital where he has helped develop systems to improve quality of care for veterans.

“Great Gifts for Gardeners” will be the meeting program. Garden Club members Linda Larson and Donna Chapman will present ideas for the best tools, resources and timesaving equipment for a gardener.

Both Linda and Donna are avid gardeners and keep up with garden trends while attending national garden shows and visiting nurseries wherever they travel.

Bunco in October was hosted by Donna for the 1st time. The weather was nice, and we were outside. Thank you Donna. This month will be at Mary’s on November 30th. Laurie will be sending out an email.

Out to Lunch in October was at The Thirsty Lion. Everyone had a good time and great food. They also have a great happy hour. Check them out. November we went to House of Tricks in Tempe. Always good food, fun and enjoy seating out on the patio with our perfect weather.

December we are going to the Ocotillo Golf Club on December 1.

Bachelor of Science Degrees at MCC Campuses Mesa Community College and Grand Canyon University partner to offer pathways to high-demand science and technology bachelor’s degrees on MCC campuses.

Individuals who have earned or are pursuing an associate’s degree at MCC, or any of the Maricopa Community Colleges, may seamlessly transfer credits to GCU to pursue a bachelor’s degree in one of five STEM-related areas (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

GCU will offer Computer Programing and Information Technology at MCC’s Southern and Dobson Campus. Mathematics for Secondary Education, Biology with Pre-Med Emphasis and Biology for Secondary Education will be offered at MCC’s Red Mountain Campus.
