I called the December 21, 2017 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Here’s a recap…

There was a light agenda with only one business item, making for a quick meeting.

We used the opportunity of the holiday season to thank and recognize our Board of Directors who volunteer countless hours for the Association. Thank you again to our volunteers donating their time as a Director.

Being a Director can at times can be a thankless job, but definitely a rewarding volunteer opportunity. This year (2018) we have five homeowners running for three open Board seats…check out their biographies in this issue of the Roundup and be sure to vote! We will be utilizing online voting for the second year this year. Watch your mailbox around the end of February for specific voting information. Voting information can also be found in the Roundup as well as on our site dobsonranch.com.

Earlier this year I wrote about the advisory committee with the City of Mesa, I was fortunate to be part of, Imagine Mesa. This initiative solicited ideas from Mesa residents for the future of Mesa, engaging residents through multiple sources with fantastic results. Our 85202 zip code was among some of the highest contributors. Thanks Dobson Ranch! It’s easy to forget our little area is part of the ever-growing larger City of Mesa.

Participating in City events and having our voice heard positively impacts our community. Results of the initiative were presented to City Council on December 7th. Some of the top suggestions were: supporting a multi-purpose multi-field youth and amateur sports complex, proactive code compliance officers, an increased number of police officers, light rail extensions, expanded bulk pick up, and a restaurant innovation district, just to name a few. Visit mesaaz.gov for more information about this fun and informative initiative. On a smaller scale, the Association will be soliciting your ideas with an online survey included when you vote for your 2018 Board of Directors. Please take the time to participate and share your ideas for the future of Dobson Ranch.

A Message From the Editor

2018 … a new year, a blank canvas, a clean sheet, a fresh start and new opportunities. I have had over 12 amazing years at Dobson Ranch, but 2018 has opened a new door and opportunity for me, so this is my last issue as editor of the Rancher’s Roundup. I will miss all of you and the friendships I have made.

Dobson Ranch always has something new and exciting in store.

There are many programs, events and activities coming your way in 2018… because… it’s great at Dobson Ranch!

Some of the regular features in this publication are open for content submission: If you live by a “Good Neighbor” or know someone with a “Green Thumb”, submit their information. Have you “Tried and Liked” a great business or eatery near Dobson Ranch? Let me know! There are great cooks in Dobson Ranch so send me your recipes. All other content and articles are considered on a space available basis and some restrictions may apply. Email editor@dobsonranch. com or call 480-831-8314 and for the editor. The necessary part: Letters and electronic correspondence will become the property of the Dobson Association, which assumes permission to publish and edit as necessary.

Call for Candidates Do you have time to volunteer and be a servant leader for Dobson Ranch? Then consider running as a candidate for the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors.

As a board member, several hours of your time each month will be devoted to Association business, special projects and committees.

The primary role of the Board is to conduct the business of the Association, not just by approving the budget, but also developing and enforcing policies. Board members are required to step outside their immediate circle of family and neighbors and make decisions based on the greater good of the community.

It isn’t all about policies and tough decisions. Our community is only as good as we make it; establishing and maintaining a sense of community is a part of a board member’s responsibility. Planning and attending functions and being a presence in the community are as important as policy decisions.

There are three seats open on the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors. Election results will be announced at the Board of Directors Annual Meeting on April 10, 2018.

Candidate bios will be printed in this issue, February, and March 2018 issues of the Ranchers’ Roundup. The deadline to be in the February Roundup is January 20, 2017.

Forms are available for download at dobsonranch.com under the Members tab or the Documents and Forms tab. Applications may be picked up at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes.

Being a board member can be challenging at times, but it may also be one of the most rewarding ways you’ll find to volunteer your time.

2018 Association Board of Directors Election to Utilize Online Voting The Dobson Association 2018 Board of Directors election will utilize online voting. A postcard will be sent to homeowners with all the details at the end of February, 2018. More information will be included in future Ranchers’ Roundups.

Three positions will be open for a seat on the Board of Directors.

Candidates are needed. Please contact the administration office at 480831-8314, if interested.

Voting helps to guide association policy and the future of your community. It is an important aspect of community living. Please vote and attend the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Members and Celebration.

THINGS TO KNOW BOARD MEETING Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? You can do all that at Dobson Association Board of Directors meetings. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7 pm at La Casita in the Grande room. The next dates are January 18 and February 15. All members are encouraged to attend. If you missed a meeting, you can get caught up with the President’s Message on page 1 or login to dobsonranch.com to read minutes from previous meetings. HOLIDAY HOURS Administration and Recreation will be closed Monday, February 19th.

FOBS ARE AVAILABLE Keyless entry fobs have replaced keys at Dobson Ranch common areas.

Dobson Ranch homeowners or the designated agent can receive either two fobs or one fob and one smart phone app for the new keyless system. Visit dobsonranch.com to complete the Keyless System Agreement & Waiver form, or pick up a form at La Casita, prior to obtaining the fobs. Fobs will be available at La Casita Administration during normal business hours.

2018 Assessments The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2018. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

We are also excited to announce that our new Caliber software has officially been launched. Please note, your new coupons reflect your new account number. Please be sure to reference this new account number when sending in payments.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check.

ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and onetime payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www. dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Please contact our office if you need assistance with setting up your payment. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2018.

4. 4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

Know Your Lakes

A long time ago our land was nearly barren, inhabited by the hardiest of animals. Then came the ancient ones, the people who built canals and farmed the land. They vanished though we can still see their legacy; canals that brought water to what would become Dobson Ranch; a sheep ranch before becoming our home.

When Dobson Ranch was still populated by sheep, water was taken from the Salt River to support life on the Ranch. As rain was never sufficient for ranching, the ranchers along the Salt River created the Salt River Users Association, later to be known as SRP, that built the Roosevelt Dam and the present-day canal system. While Dobson Ranch no longer supports livestock, the present-day Dobson Ranch hosts a wide range of inhabitants.

We take water from the SRP canals to maintain our lakes. There is lots of information about our lakes on the Dobson Ranch Website. Look up the address in the Dobson Ranch Ranchers’ Roundup, see banner at top of page. At our website one will find maps describing the eight main lakes and the several sub-association lakes that also share the water supplied by SRP. The primary purpose of the lakes is to capture and hold storm water run-off as there are no natural drainage channels back to the Salt River. The water taken from SRP keeps the lakes full when there is not enough rain.

The lakes of Dobson Ranch cover about 78 of the nearly 100 acres we share as common area. If you like to fish, there are plenty of good spots. Remember, the policy for fishing our lakes is “catch and release.” Boating is also a popular activity. Residents can take a boat tour through the auspices the Recreation Office, see page 13. The lakes also offer resting spots for migratory water fowl thereby enhancing the view of the lakes from one of our several walking paths. Help keep the water fowl wild and healthy – don’t feed them.

We enjoy a wonderful setting handed down to us by the early settlers of what would become Dobson Ranch. Attend one of the many events planned for 2018, like our own Spring Expo in early April. Learn how conserving water enhances our lives.

I have resided in six states and four foreign countries. This does not make me an expert but I say Dobson Ranch, a forty year old undertaking by Keating has proved to be one of the most unique and wonderful HOA’s put together. We have the greatest location, wonderful perks that we do not pay for, and SPACE. We have churches and schools AND people who enjoy the American way and support the governing association We have wonderful loyal employees.

What is your motivation for running for the Board of Directors?

I would be honored to continue serving YOU the homeowner as a member of the Dobson Ranch HOA Board of Directors. Representing your voice on matters that concern finances, growth and stability in our Ranch. In the past 7 years I have enjoyed serving the Ranch and its homeowners. I believe together we can continue to make this community the “best place to live” as well as attract new homeowners and businesses to our location. We have singles and couples, growing families, empty nesters, and retirees all living in the same neighborhoods. We are like an urban setting in the suburbs. Schools/libraries, restaurants, grocery/retail stores are all within walking distance.

What activities, events, programs, and/or amenities do you enjoy at Dobson Ranch?

My family attends many of the activities on the Ranch. I think it is important as a Director to attend events and get feedback from Homeowners. Some of my favorites are Winter Wonderland, The Halloween Spooktacular and the Easter Egg Hunt. I have also attended classes at La Casita including Yoga, Tai Chi, Tennis, and Swimming. My family enjoys walking the lakes as a relaxing activity or a work out.

As you look at the Dobson Ranch community, what specific challenges do you see facing the HOA? A critical issue that is facing our community is keeping Dobson Ranch attractive to new homeowners and nearby businesses. We must continue to take care of our facilities as well as keep a close relationship with nearby schools and businesses. We already have an amazing location, wonderful amenities, and a financially stable community as well as a great relationship with the City of Mesa.

Now it’s important look forward to our future while keeping the stability of our past. I believe we can keep assessments low while continuing to update and maintain the Ranch. For the past 3 years the assessments have not been increased while Dobson Ranch has continued to improve its facilities as well as its activities. A true win-win for everyone.

Autobiography: I am a USAF Veteran and have lived in the East Valley for 32 years. My family moved to Dobson Ranch 13 years ago due to its Diversity, location, and family atmosphere. I have had the privilege to serve on the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors for the past 7 years. Two years as President and three years as Vice President. I have been involved in Dobson Ranch HOA Committee’s such as the Beautification Committee, Budget and Finance Committee, Marketing Committee, and Recreation Committee. My community involvement has included the PTA, the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Mesa Chamber of Commerce Women’s Council as well as other organizations. I believe in serving my country as well as my community.

The need to manage funding without creating new problems, now that the reserve fund is fully funded.

Autobiography: I have served 6 years on Board of Directors, now treasurer. Have chaired master planning, managed the end of wall project and reserve funding. I was actively involved in the pool deck renovations and other ongoing projects like the pending volleyball court replacement, and a meeting room at Los Altos, more boat slips and bathrooms at Laguna Park. I have an MBA from University of Phoenix. I am a retired small business owner.

Dobson Ranch is a great place to live with many wonderful amenities. I would like to continue my role in leading the community forward by overseeing continued growth and future improvement, being part of the central decision-making on the major issues and by ensuring that the collect vision of the home-owners is fairly represented and maintain the high standards that the community is known for.

What activities, events, programs, and/or amenities do you enjoy at Dobson Ranch?

I have been involved in many activities such as toys for tots, boating on our lakes, swimming activities, and attending various community activities as well as mesa city activities.

As you look at the Dobson Ranch community, what specific challenges do you see facing the HOA? The greatest challenges are to keep Dobson Ranch moving forward as a progressive community while being mindful of the cost to the homeowners and residents as well as maintain a well-established partnership with the city of Mesa.

Autobiography: I have been a Dobson Ranch resident for 29 years. My 34 year career has encompassed being an educator in economics, political science and history, director of continuing community education. I was director of site operations for Rio Salado College. My focus was maintaining high standards of academics, managing multiple physical operations at all college sites and supervising over 75 people. I have been an active volunteer for charity for over 20 years including fundraising activities for Sunsounds of Arizona radio station servicing the visually challenged and for KJZZ-KBAC. As a board member for the last three years, I have served on the water management committee, as well as two ad hoc committees dealing with employee benefits and revision of by-laws, common area guidelines and residential guidelines. I am currently chairing the master planning committee. I have actively, for the last three years, supported a freeze on homeowner fees.

Save the date! The Dobson Ranch Spring Expo is Saturday, April 7, 2018, 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at La Casita. This annual event forwards the theme of conservation in Dobson Ranch and is open to all residents and guests.

Dobson Ranch is a leader in conservation. Recycling bins are available for use in common areas and at community events, and the Water Management Committee offers smart irrigation controllers at a discount to residents. Learn more about these valuable programs and meet with representatives from SRP, the City of Mesa, and area businesses to learn ways to conserve natural resources and save money.

Bring the entire family - the Spring Expo is held in conjunction with the Retiree’s Club Pancake Breakfast. There will be children’s activities, La Casita Preschool Art Show, and back by popular demand, a live ladybug release at 10:30. Mark April 7th on your calendar for a morning of fun!

SECTION 2.10 HOLIDAY LIGHTS AND DECORATIONS Holiday decorations will not require approval if installed no earlier than thirty (30) days before a holiday and removed no later than twenty-one (21) days after a holiday. Any variation from these time periods will require approval of the ACC. The ACC reserves the right to request reasonable modifications to holiday decorations if deemed appropriate.

The recreation department has a lot of programs and events coming up. First off is Sunday Music in the Park with music from The Caution Band on February 11th at Laguna Park from 3p-5p.

Bring your lawn chairs, we will be selling the refreshments. Next up is Stargazing on February 23rd at Laguna Park. Bring your cell phone for a great picture of the moon. In March we have Movie in the Park on Friday, March 9th at Laguna Park at sunset (about 6:45 pm). We will be showing the movie “Lego Nijago”. Bring your family and friends for a free movie and popcorn. Next up is Spring Break Camp which will be held March 12th-16th. If you are looking for something for the kiddos to do when they are on break…look no further. We will be introducing some new activities and will have lots of fun throughout the week. It’s also the time of year for some spring cleaning. Join us for our Garage Sale, Clean Up and Shred on Saturday, March 17th.

In this 6 week class children will learn various Latin dances like Cha Cha, Salsa, Merengue and other Latin dances as well as the latest hip hop steps. Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability.

Other rules and restrictions will apply. Don’t forget… a FREE one hour pontoon ride per year per property is available for you to enjoy! Call 480831-7464 for more information.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. Table and chair rentals request are made during administration hours (except for holidays) at La Casita Recreation Center.

Santa Claus had a jolly time with 200 Dobson Ranch residents of all ages at the recent Santa Breakfast event in December.

There were a lot of Ho Ho Ho’s from Mr. Claus and smiles from the children as they told Santa their gift wishes. The Retirees served up their yummiest pancakes, Cowboy JJ painted faces and there were crafts available, all to keep the little ones entertained while they waited for their turn with Santa. Keep reading the Ranchers’ Roundup for more exciting events and activities in 2018. The fun just keeps going!

Happy New Year to All! --Resolution #1: Play More Pickleball!!

DR Pickleball celebrated the holidays with our 5th Annual Christmas Tournament on December 16th! Seven doubles teams competed for seasonal decorations prepared and donated by individual participants, all of which featured some creative use of a pickleball. A grand prize was prepared and presented by David Jones to our Commissioner Frank Mizner and his partner Gina Gillies in honor of their many years of organizing our periodic neighborhood competitions. Their efforts are much appreciated by all!!

Los Altos “Drop-In” Play times continue through the “winter” with 8 am start times on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and an evening session on Tuesday at 6:30 pm. There is also regular social play on Monday and Thursday nights at 6:30, coordinated by Donna Moran . To get on her list please contact her at nanadeeaz@aol.com.

2018 Boat Permits and Fishing Licenses on Sale It’s always a great time for fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply). Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Happy New Year!

The Retirees’ finished 2017 at its December General Meeting with a tremendous Pot Luck with so much variety it was over whelming.

The Harmony Rain Quartet provided us with entertainment. The meeting also included the induction of the Club’s new 2018 officers, - Al Prosek, President, Lucille Willgale, Vice-President, Jo Nosworthy, Secretary, and Carolyn Sedlak, Treasurer. Other December activities included Men’s Breakfast, Ladies Lunch at the Thirtsy Lion which included a gift exchange, Day Trippers went to The Tea Room, Dinner Night out at Mimi’s, Happy Hour at Casa Juana, Game Day, biking two times a week, and hiking once a week.

In December, we adopted two families through the St Vincent DePaul Charities for the Holiday Season, with Retirees’ efforts headed up by Dennis Stewart, Jo Norsworthy and Connie Saaverda.

The Club will be reaching out to local teachers in need in 2018 as we all know that many teachers are reaching into their own pockets to provide school supplies. This will be an on-going effort throughout the year.

We all look forward to another year together.

Fishing Club

First, great happiness, health and luck to you and yours in this New Year.

I guess this New Year luck should also extend to fishing. You’ll need it when fishing our Dobson Ranch lakes the next couple months. The bass and catfish have really slowed down. So that means you really need to slow down when presenting your baits.

So- fishing is tough. But I have also had some of my best days fishing in the desert during the winter. Fish school up, and you can catch a bunch with the right presentation. They still need to eat, although not nearly at the frequency they do in the summer. Three of my favorite wintertime baits for bass are a jerk bait, swim bait, and drop shot worm rig.

Make sure you get your 2018 fishing permit at La Casita. Happy New Year to you!

Proposition 305 and the future of school choice in Arizona will be the subject of the Feb. 1 meeting of the Dobson Ranch Republicans, 6:30-8 p.m. at Native Grill & Wings, 1837 W Guadalupe Road, #122. Anyone interested in educational choices for their children are welcome to attend. Our guest speaker will be Elizabeth Dreckman, President and Executive Director of the Arizona School Choice Trust.

Dreckman has worked in the world of education reform and school choice for over a decade. She previously served as Development and Outreach Manager for the Alliance for School Choice and American Federation for Children, and outreach coordinator for the Institute for Justice.

Dreckman also conducted education research and authored education studies and publications for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy and State Policy Network. Dreckman has an honors degree in political theory and constitutional democracy from James Madison College at Michigan State University.

Happy New Year....2018...how does 365 days seem to go by so quickly.

Out to Lunch ended up being cancelled...everyone was so busy that no one could attend.

We will try and go there again soon. We went to Chompies this month. Always good food and fun times. Feb. 2 will be our next Out to Lunch. We are going to the Vine and Stone...Alma School & Queen Creek. We have been there before and enjoyed it Call Chris to let her know.

Our Christmas Fundraiser Bunco was at Patty’s. What a great time we had. Thank you for your continuing support for our charities. The Gents had a good time too.
