Happy Holidays! I hope you are enjoying the holidays with friends and family and participating in the numerous festivities here on the Ranch. Winter Wonderland was a great time; thank you for stopping to say hi, I heard some nice compliments while out there. This shouldn’t surprise me since I happen to think Dobson Ranch is pretty special. One of the comments was how fantastic our facilities are looking in spite of a zero percent increase in assessments for 3 years.

The other was how great homes and the area in general are looking, the comment was that Dobson Ranch is still a “jewel”. Here at the Association we certainly recognize the continuous needs associated with an aging community; however, it was exciting to hear that community members were sharing in our enthusiasm and positive feelings on the state of the Association and our neighborhoods.

It’s hard to believe 2017 is coming to a close… We will ring in the New Year with the second annual Polar Plunge on January 13. This event was proposed by our very own Frank Mizner, Board of Directors President, and is mirrored after Polar Plunge events throughout the United States. Ours will benefit Autism Speaks and is sponsored by Sprouts. Last year we had a large turnout of all ages for the event.

Participate or come join the fun. There will be refreshments and giveaways…please join us.

The Board of Directors election will continue with online voting.

Homeowners will receive a postcard around the end of February detailing how to vote online. A polling spot will be set up here at La Casita for those without online access. If a paper ballot is desired that option too will be available here at the Administration office.

The postcard will also advertise the Annual Meeting and Annual Celebration. This year the meeting and celebration are on Tuesday, April 10, beginning at 5:30 pm for food and fun, then the Annual meeting will occur at 7 pm. We are always looking for Board of Director candidates, if you or someone you know are interested in running for the Board of Directors please visit the Dobson Ranch website or contact the office at 480-831-8314.

I called the November 16, 2017 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

Here’s a recap…

First up was my President’s Report…in light of the U of A men’s basketball game that started at 7:30pm that evening I decided to forego my report (which by the way was a great game – U of A won). In all seriousness, there was a light agenda as the Board and staff are wrapping up projects for 2017, making the November meeting one of the shortest on record.

Please mark your calendar for the second annual Ranch “Polar Plunge” scheduled for Saturday January 13, 2018. This event is close to my heart, as I first proposed it, I am thrilled with the support it has received. Thank you for coming out in 2017, there was a nice crowd, we hope 2018 will bring just as many participants if not more. Our Polar Plunge is mirrored after Polar Plunge events throughout the United States, last year ours benefited Autism Speaks; this year will also benefit a charity.

As I mentioned last month…it’s hard to believe it is that time of year again; we are preparing for the Board of Directors election in April 2018. Three open seats will be available on our Board.

In other exciting Association news, our Executive Director, David Jones received an award this month from CAI, Community Associations Institute. David received the Member of Merit award recognizing all of his participation in and contributions to the organization throughout 2017. Congratulations David!

Time flies when we are having fun right?!? And there was a lot of fun happening recently at the Dobson Ranch Fall Festival in November, and earlier this month at the Winter Wonderland and Santa Breakfast events. Check out the photos in this issue.

2018 will include many more events and activities for all ages, starting with the second annual Polar Plunge, on Saturday, January 13. Sign up soon to participate in this fun chilly challenge!

I hope that this holiday season finds you and yours happy and healthy. Enjoy your family and friends and if travel is in your plans, please be safe and return refreshed and ready to take on a new year.

Call for Candidates Do you have time to volunteer and be a servant leader for Dobson Ranch? Then consider running as a candidate for the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors.

As a board member, several hours of your time each month will be devoted to Association business, special projects and committees.

The primary role of the Board is to conduct the business of the Association, not just by approving the budget, but also developing and enforcing policies. Board members are required to step outside their immediate circle of family and neighbors and make decisions based on the greater good of the community.

It isn’t all about policies and tough decisions. Our community is only as good as we make it; establishing and maintaining a sense of community is a part of a board member’s responsibility. Planning and attending functions and being a presence in the community are as important as policy decisions.

There are three seats open on the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors. Election results will be announced at the Board of Directors Annual Meeting on April 10, 2018.

Candidate bios will be printed in the January, February, and March 2018 issues of the Ranchers’ Roundup. The deadline to be in the January Roundup is December 20, 2017.

Forms are available for download at dobsonranch.com under the Members tab or the Documents and Forms tab. Applications may be picked up at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes.

Being a board member can be challenging at times, but it may also be one of the most rewarding ways you’ll find to volunteer your time. If you’re interested in running for the board or would like more details about board responsibilities, please contact the Administration office at 480-831-8314.

2018 Association Board of Directors Election to Utilize Online Voting The Dobson Association 2018 Board of Directors election will utilize online voting. A postcard will be sent to homeowners with all the details at the end of February, 2018. More information will be included in future Ranchers’ Roundups.

Three positions will be open for a seat on the Board of Directors.

Candidates are needed. Please contact the administration office at 480-831-8314, if interested.

Voting helps to guide association policy and the future of your community. It is an important aspect of community living. Please vote and attend the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Members and Celebration.

THINGS TO KNOW BOARD MEETING Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? You can do all that at Dobson Association Board of Directors meetings. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7 pm at La Casita in the Grande room. The next dates are December 21, January 18 and February 15. All members are encouraged to attend.

HOLIDAY HOURS Administration will be closed December 25th and 26th. Recreation will be open on December 24th from 10 am - 2 pm and closed on December 25th. Recreation will be open on December 26th. Administration will be closed January 1st and 2nd. Recreation will be open on December 31st from 10 am - 2 pm and closed on January 1st, 2018. Recreation will be open on January 2nd.

FOBS ARE AVAILABLE Keyless entry fobs have replaced keys at Dobson Ranch common areas. Dobson Ranch homeowners or the designated agent can receive either two fobs or one fob and one smart phone app for the new keyless system. Visit dobsonranch.com to complete the Keyless System Agreement & Waiver form, or pick up a form at La Casita, prior to obtaining the fobs. Fobs will be available at La Casita Administration during normal business hours DRY-UP This year SRP will be cleaning other parts of the canal system and will not need to curtail water deliveries to the Ranch. The Ranch depends upon the annual dry-up to maintain the lakes and shelves. To stay on schedule, the curtailment of water delivery during this period will happen again this winter. Work on the Lake 1 shelf repair will start this year on December 11th and will run through February 28, 2018, all subject to weather conditions. Association Staff will work between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Expect to see the water levels drop in Lakes 1, 2 and 3. The water level in the downstream lakes may correspondingly drop. To what extent these drop will depend a lot on how much rain is received during the maintenance period.

LANDSCAPE HOURS The Landscape/Maintenance hours are 6:30 am until 3 pm, Monday through Friday.

‘Twas the Night before Selling Twas the night before selling and all through the house, the sellers were grumbling, “this market’s a louse”.

The ads were all posted, the signs hung with care, in hopes that good buyers soon would be there.

Now Foxy, now Greedy, on Trixter and Cecil, come Fibber, on Talker, come Winker and Weasel!

They crashed through the door, took a cursory look, tossed down their cards and ran to the cook.

She had drive and ambition, a hard working elf, who I hugged when I saw her in spite of myself.

A wink of her eye and a twist of her head, soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

The agents were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of commissions danced in their heads.

With Ma in her kerchief, and I in my cap, had just settled in for a whole lot of crap.

And with a twinkling of keys, out the door they did dash to the next Open House – they were giving out cash!

As I drew in my head and was turning around, back in the door Barbara came with a bound.

She spoke lots of words and went straight to her work, and made lots of phone calls, and turned with a jerk, and in a market that couldn’t be drier, she called us one day, “WE HAVE A BUYER”

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash, it’s Open House day! Quick – throw out the trash.

She was all dressed for business from her foot to her head, and she showed us inquiries so we would not dread.

A bundle of prospects she had flung in her purse and she promised that it would not get worse.

Her eyes how they twinkled! Her dimples how merry!

Her cheeks were like roses, her nose like a cherry!

She told us the truth, an amiable sort, and we loved her in spite of her being so short!

She sprang to the contracts, to her team gave a shout, and away we all flew to a closing that was perfect - no doubt!

But I heard her exclaim as she drove out of sight I love you guys, may your future be bright!

The sun on the lawn which was just freshly mowed gave the luster of midday to objects below.

And what do I see coming in through the fence, but a miniature van and eight hungry agents.

With a little ole driver so lively and quick, Barbara Meijome was there – she knew all of the tricks.

More rapid than pirranhas those agents they came, and she whistled and shouted and called them by name.

Fish in the Lakes

they consume the food other birds need to continue their migration. Those new arrivals are driven off when their food is no longer available.

The Lakes of Dobson Ranch are a joy and make the Ranch a great place to live. Keeping the lakes healthy is the best way to protect our lakes. Please help keep the lakes clean and free of trash and please refrain from feeding the fish or other wildlife. They have a job to do: keeping the lakes healthy.

“Joy to the world, all the boys and girls, joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea, joy to you and me�. The song by the Three Dog Night should have mentioned our lakes as they are a joy to behold, a joy to walk around and a joy to watch as they change from day to day. Those changes can be subtle. The color can change from one day to the next, the surface The Dobson Association, Inc. can be calm or chaotic and there is a changing mix of wildlife that Common Area Guidelines visit our lakes.

Recently we added to, or rather supplemented the stock of blue- 6.7 FEEDING OF WILDLIFE gill, bass and catfish in our lakes as a way of maintaining a healthy Feeding of wildlife (fish, fowl, feral cats, turtles) is not permitted in lake system. The lakes support a variety of fish necessary to clean the common areas / lakes. and support those that do the heavy work. Look closely at any one of our lakes and you are apt to see some pretty big fish, called Amur, swimming near the shore. They did not start out that big. They came to us as small Amur and grew to be giants doing what they are supposed to do: eat weeds. Weeds are one of the biggest problems in our lakes. If not controlled by the Amur, the weeds would grow and choke the lakes. The alternative would be to use toxic chemicals to control the weeds.

In addition, birds such as duck, coots, geese, etc. visit our lakes now and then. They stop on their way to or from their winter or summer roosting areas to rest and forage for food. This cycle of life enhances the natural beauty of our lakes. Some of those migrants, however over-stay their natural respite. When they stay too long

2018 Assessments

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2018. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

We are also excited to announce that our new Caliber software has officially been launched. Please note, your new coupons reflect your new account number. Please be sure to reference this new account number when sending in payments.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone.

Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and one-time payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”.

Please contact our office if you need assistance with setting up your payment. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2018.

4. 4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

Green Thumb Award

There is a husband with a green thumb at 2256 S Las Flores! This month’s Green Thumb Award winner was nominated by his wife.

Here is what Krystal has to say about her hubby: “I would like to nominate my husband Christopher for the Green Thumb Award. He takes much pride in his backyard and I personally love the splendor of the greenery. I think this picture showcases the beauty of the green grass as you look through the lovely grape vines.”

As you can tell by the photo that Krystal provided, the backyard is a green oasis. But the front yard is equally as nice with mature xeriscape landscaping.

Holiday Lights and Decorations

The Froehlich family has called Dobson Ranch home since 1978. Recently, Art and Pat celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Art retired from Motorola as an Electrical Engineering Section Manager, and his second career was Garde manger Chef and wine Sommelier at the Ritz-Carlton, Marriott Hotels. Pat was active in Girl Scouts, Mesa swim Club and recently Maguire Consulting Firm.

They have four daughters, 7 grandchildren, and 2 step Granddaughters and 4 step Great Grand kids. Art and Pat enjoy traveling, sport events and family activities.

Adoption Day National Adoption Day was Saturday, November 18, 2017.

Over 200+ children were adopted in Arizona alone! One of the happy children that was part of that special day and now has a forever home and family and is a Dobson Ranch resident, is Adreana (8)! The proud parents of this adorable girl are Chris and Sandra Diamond. They look forward to sharing the traditional annual Winter Wonderland & Holiday Boat Parade with their daughter!

Laguna Village Luminaria

The tradition continues! For many, many years the residents of Laguna Village (a subassociation one block west of Dobson south of Keating) have celebrated by placing luminarias throughout their entire neighborhood on Christmas Eve. This year is no exception. Once again, more than 1,000 luminarias will be in place, with the lighting to begin at dusk.

Stop by and stroll through the neighborhood. It is magical!

I am proud to say the “Fall Festival” was successful. I wanted to thank all of the families in the community for participating this year, especially the ones that participated in chili cook off. I am very excited that the holidays are right around the corner and our recreation department has been busy decorating the Recreation Centers. We are anxious for 2018 to arrive and have many new and improved programs and events being offered. In January, we have Polar Plunge event on January 13th.

Calling all you brave people out there to jump in the La Casita pool. We will be giving out door prizes (while supplies last) and great raffle prizes. Sign up online or at La Casita Recreation Center. Bark in the Park event on January 27th. Bring your dogs out to Laguna Park for some fun. You can sign up to participate in dog tricks and see some vendors exclusively for your canine. We will have areas for big and small dogs, so come out and enjoy the fun. Thanks for all the 2017 memories and I look forward to making many more in 2018.

Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. Table and chair rentals request are made during administration hours (except for holidays) at La Casita Recreation Center.

Winter Wonderland

It was 86 degrees at the recent Dobson Ranch Winter Wonderland event. The sunshine and heat didn’t deter anyone from having fun in the snow! The afternoon portion of Winter Wonderland was well attended with over 600 parents, family and friends watching kids play in the snow, make crafts, and play games. Santa will be very busy reading all the letters that were written to him! At 6:30 pm it was time to start the evening festivities. The sound of carolers filled the air as everyone enjoyed goodies, and boat rides. The highlight of the evening was the spectacular lighted boat parade! A special thanks to all the volunteers that decorated their boats and made the evening magical for the attendees. This great Dobson Ranch tradition will be happening again in 2018… don’t miss it!

Fall Festival

Over 1500 residents, family and friends enjoyed a beautiful fall afternoon at the Dobson Ranch Fall Festival and Chili Cook off. Eight contestants competed and provided samples of their amazing chili.

Congratulations to 1st Place winner Janet Lee (award accepted by her dad), and 2nd Place winner Cherry McCarthy. Pontoon rides, vendors, food, bounce houses, carnival games and a coloring contest for the kids were among the other activities. The coloring contest winners were: Zoe in age 0-4, Raegan in age 5-8 and Lulu in age 9-13. Delicious food was available by Mustache Pretzels and The Dobson Ranch Retiree Club. For the over 21 crowd, Sleepy Dog Brewery provided beer at the beer garden and wine was served as well. While the festivities were happening, live music was provided by Triplicity. And that’s not all… the Mesa Fire and Police Departments brought a fire truck and police car for the kids to check out. To those of you that couldn’t make it this year… you missed a LOT! Thanks to everyone who made this event so fun!

We all know we are eating too much over the holidays and need more exercise! New Year’s Resolutions are around the corner. Way too soon!! Why not get out and learn to play some pickleball?

Your courts at Los Altos Recreation Center are nearby, and there are experienced players awaiting you there to introduce you to this fastest growing sport in America.

Los Altos “Drop-In” Play times continue through the “winter” with 8 am start times on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and an evening session on Tuesday at 6:30 pm. There is also regular social play on Monday and Thursday nights at 6:30, coordinated by Donna Moran . To get on her list please contact her at nanadeeaz@ aol.com.

2018 Boat Permits and Fishing Licenses on Sale It’s always a great time for fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply). Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits.

WOW, November was busy. It started with a fantastic Turkey Dinner at our general meeting, over 100 members attended and had a great time. The Mayor of Mesa came by and spoke of events and business going on around our area including talks about Fiesta Mall and the vacant fenced in area on Southern Ave. Looks like we will be getting some real development in those locations.

The Fall Festival was fun as always, the kids and adults had a great time. We retirees served hot dogs, chips and brats to the crowd. Thanks go out to all the volunteers from, set up to cleanup and everything in between. I will not list names, but you know who you are, and we thank you all very much!

Things are really active in the club now that the weather is cooler, biking, hiking, picnics are all happening now. Check your calendar and don’t forget ladies lunch, men’s breakfast, happy hour, dinner night out, game and movie day, Day Trippers, don’t forget Breakfast with Santa, don’t miss it.

We welcome new members and what’s great is you can do all the activities you wish to do and it only costs $20.00 per year. Great bargain.

I do have one request, we need more volunteers. You can pick what you would like to do, help with our monthly lunch (cooking or serving), help with our committees is always welcome. Even helping to find new places in Mesa and close area for lunch, dinner and happy hours, we all like new ideas.

Have a very happy holiday season and be safe and get ready for the new year when we get to do this all again. So much fun.

Fishing Club

By Ed Ricci Our HOA in coordination with the Fish Club stocked the Dobson Ranch lakes again in October. Fish stocking by the HOA routinely occurs twice a year- in the Spring and Fall. Our strategy has been to concentrate the stocking on the fish forage base, specifically fathead minnows, bluegill, and redear sunfish. The game fish- bass and catfish- naturally reproduce and typically have strong spawns in the Spring. A strong forage base feeds the juvenile and adult game species, and our small ecosystem takes care of itself. This strategy has resulted in a healthy and balanced fish population. In many ways, this is a self-sustaining fishery. In this last stocking, we did also add some largemouth bass and catfish to our lakes to supplement the exiting gene pool. We stock the redear sunfish because they eat clams and we continue to be on the watch for invasive clams and mussels. We stock white amur to control the aquatic weeds. All the small fish eat fly larva and pupa which effects insect control.

Fishing in October/ November has not been automatic. You have to work for them. I believe that the changing water temperatures have the fish a little finicky. The same lures that I often talk about still workplastic worm and grub presentations, crankbaits, and flukes and senkos.

At this time of year, I believe changed weather conditions like a cloudy or rare rainy day will produce fish. You can often catch some fish quickly under such conditions. You can look out at the lake almost any time of day and see baitfish bubbling to the surface as they are pushed up by feeding bass. You just need to figure out how to catch the feeding fish.

On Tuesday, January 9 (note date change), A Traveling Gardener blogger Linda Larson will present ideas for seeing the best view of the world through visiting gardens. The presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. at La Casita community center.

On Thursday, November 9th the Franklin at Alma Elementary students and staff hosted a special assembly to educate students about the importance of Veterans’ Day and to honor all United States Veterans.

The Firebird Band and Advanced Orchestra performed some patriotic pieces. The school also continued the annual tradition of hosting a solemn presentation of the POW/MIA remembrance from the Dobson High School Air Force JROTC cadets.

This was a memorable and touching assembly that allowed the students to understand why we honor and thank Veterans for their service.

Awards and Achievements: The Mesa Arts Center recently hosted a Clay Olympics event that challenged students to creatively solve a variety of problems in clay. Dobson students earned trophies in four of the six events and 3 students were awarded scholarships for their creative abilities.

New Frontiers Spring Open House

New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning(NFLL), is a peer-led, selfdirected organization operating under the sponsorship of Mesa Community College. Educational and social opportunities happen by joining interactive groups. Many classes meet one time for 2 ½ to 3 hours. There are no tests, grades or credits.

An Open House for learning about NFLL will take place on Friday.
