Besides all of the events that are happening in the coming months, the association has upgraded many elements in the common areas. Recently added at Los Altos: new parking lot lights, replacement of the large umbrella cover, and replacement of the pool fence. Earlier this year the Association replaced the pool decking with travertine tile and replaced the surface of the pool with Pebble Tec. I hope that you were able to enjoy it over the summer. Many residents have reached out to share their appreciation. Improvements will continue in the upcoming months starting with the fob system, replacement of lights at Laguna Park, adding fencing at Los Altos boat dock, and the lake one refurbishment. In the months of September and October there were two events where staff passed out fobs to homeowners. Many homeowners came and picked up their fobs. The fob will replace the homeowner key which allows access to tennis courts, pickleball courts and pool areas. Please pick up your fob at the La Casita Administration office prior to November 30th. Fob request forms can be found on the Association website. Dobson Ranch had its annual Golf Tournament last month. Attendance at this event was the highest it has been in many years. I’d like to take a moment to offer many thanks to our sponsors, which can be located on page 13, that helped to make this event successful. It is a community of business leaders and residents that make Dobson Ranch a great place to live. The 2017 Hydration Campaign had a strong finish in September with 469,504 bottles of water being collected. Ranch residents donated a total of 5,568. Thanks to everyone who participated! Just six months ago, in April, the Association members elected three Board of Directors. I can’t believe that it’s that time of year again where we ask for candidates interested in running for a seat on the Board of Directors by submitting a candidate form (located on the Association website). Please read page 2, “Call for Candidates,” for more information. The end of September, the City of Mesa Council members and Mayor made the tough decision to remove Ryan Winkle as District 3 Council Member. The City of Mesa accepted applications for a one-year term. The City received 33 applications for the District 3 council member seat. The Mayor and Council narrowed it down to five candidates. One of the candidates withdrew their application. An open session was held and four candidates were interviewed by the Council. One of the candidates was Dobson Ranch homeowner Mr. Frank Mizner. Even though the Council did not pick Mr. Mizner for the seat, it’s great to know that someone from Dobson Ranch was one of 33 chosen to interview for the position. The City Council motioned and approved to appoint Mr. Francisco “Franky” Heredia to the District 3 seat. Councilmember Heredia does not live far from Dobson Ranch and will be attending some of our events. You can find Councilmember Heredia’s bio on page 24. We wish the Councilmember the best as he settles in. Lastly, the City of Mesa will be starting on the third phase of irrigation repairs and adding plants to landscape on Dobson north of Baseline. The City completed phases 1 and 2 during the summer months. During phase 1 and 2 you may have noticed blocked lanes and people working along Dobson Road. Please be cautious in these areas as work continues in October and November. Next year, work is planned for both sides of Guadalupe from the 101 to Dobson and additional work may extend to Alma School. Trees and ground cover will be replaced. Many thanks to the City of Mesa for beautifying the roadways. I hope to see you soon at the following Ranch events: Halloween Spooktacular, Fall Festival, Winter Wonderland, and Breakfast with Santa. I called the September 21, 2017 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Here’s a recap… We were joined by Howard Grace, owner, developer and President of W.M. Grace Companies who own of the northwest corner of Southern and Alma School. Mr. Grace and his associates presented their concept plans for this area. Thank you to the Grace Companies for taking the time to share with us these plans; we appreciate the updated information. We will provide any official comments on these plans once we are notified by the City. Next up was my President’s Report…I was honored to present the “Dragonfly Award”, an award created to recognize those who make a difference in the Dobson Ranch community, to Dobson Ranch resident Terry Willette. Last month the Ranchers Roundup featured a letter Mr. Willette’s neighbors wrote nominating him for the Dobson Ranch Good Neighbor Award and for National Good Neighbor Day. Thank you Mr. Willette for making Dobson Ranch a great place to live. Dobson Ranch is full of fantastic stories just like this, please share with us your good neighbor stories. Under “New Business” the Board discussed the proposed amended Bylaws. Thank you to the Adhoc Document Committee for your efforts reviewing this and other Association documents; much work goes into this often tedious process. Thank you for your time and attention to this arduous task. After much discussion the amended Bylaws were adopted. For a copy of the revised document please stop by the Administration office or it can be found online under Governing Documents. Next on the agenda section 6.10 of the Common Area Guidelines was reviewed. The Board approved removing the expedited rental fee for facilities, table and chairs, equipment, and room rentals. The section was replaced with specific language outlining these changes. For more information, this too, can be found on the website or is available at the Administration office. Discussion of the proposed Association budget for 2018 was deferred to the Boards’ October 19 meeting. Please join us for the next Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, October 19 at 7:00 pm in the La Casita Grande Room.

On the hunt for some outstanding things to do at Dobson Ranch? There are plenty! The recreation section in this Ranchers’ Roundup will help you find the best classes, activities and events happening during the season of all things pumpkin spice, including the Halloween Spooktacular and the Fall Festival. The Halloween Spooktacular on October 20th brings out the scariest, cutest and most unique gathering of costumes you have ever seen. Bring your family, friends and all the kids for an evening that will include: food trucks, a costume contest, games, inflatables, pumpkin parade, candy and a movie to close out the night. It all starts at 5:30, so mark your calendars! While you have those calendars out be sure to save the date for Saturday, November 18 from 12 to 3 pm, as Laguna Park hosts the Dobson Ranch Fall Festival. Do you have a great chili recipe? Sign up for the popular chili cook-off by November 15th and compete for prizes. That’s not all… there will be a lot packed into those three hours: live music, food to purchase, vendors, a beer garden, pontoon rides, games, contests and fun for all ages! Please enjoy the all the amenities Dobson Ranch has to offer and I hope to see you at the next great Dobson Ranch event!

Board of Directors Adopt Amended Documents Amended versions of the Residential Architectural Guidelines and the Common Area Guidelines were adopted by the Dobson Association Board of Directors, on August 17, 2017. These documents may be viewed on the website, dobsonranchhoa.com, or may be picked up at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes, 85202. Please note: the provisional grace period for temporary parking has changed. 2.9.2 TEMPORARY PARKING Mobile homes, motor homes, boats, recreational vehicles, trailers, campers or other similar vehicles shall not be parked on any public street or on any residential lot except for periods of up to forty-eight (48) hours within seven (7) consecutive days for the purposes of loading, unloading, and cleaning such vehicles. The Association must be notified in writing of the necessity and timeframe beforehand. Such vehicles may not be occupied by guests or any persons and should be parked as to not create an obstruction. This provisional grace period is a courtesy, revocable if misused.

Call for Candidates Do you have time to volunteer and be a servant leader for Dobson Ranch? Then consider running as a candidate for the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors. As a board member, several hours of your time each month will be devoted to Association business, special projects and committees. The primary role of the Board is to conduct the business of the Association, not just by approving the budget, but also developing and enforcing policies. Board members are required to step outside their immediate circle of family and neighbors and make decisions based on the greater good of the community. It isn’t all about policies and tough decisions. Our community is only as good as we make it; establishing and maintaining a sense of community is a part of a board member’s responsibility. Planning and attending functions and being a presence in the community are as important as policy decisions. There are three seats open on the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors. Election results will be announced at the Board of Directors Annual Meeting on April 10, 2018. Candidate bios will be printed in the January, February, and March 2018 issues of the Ranchers’ Roundup. The deadline to be in the January Roundup is December 20, 2017. To apply online or print an application form, please visit dobsonranch. com, then login. Information will be under the Members tab. Applications may be picked up at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes. Being a board member can be challenging at times, but it may also be one of the most rewarding ways you’ll find to volunteer your time. Enjoy the Lakes - Lake 7 The lakes in Dobson Ranch are some of the beautiful amenities that can be enjoyed in the community. The weather is nice and it’s a great time to do a little catch and release fishing, take a leisurely stroll or maybe do some nature watching. Dragon Fly Award Recipient
The “Dragonfly Award” originated in 2014 as a way to recognize homeowners or residents who are “Making a Difference” at Dobson Ranch. The newest recipient is Terry Willette. You may recall that last month Terry was nominated for the Good Neighbor Award by Ron and Barb Miller. Here is a recap: We are so thankful we live next door to the kindest man ever. He is available to help any time the need arises. Whenever we encounter a computer problem he is there to solve it for us with patience and understanding. He is there for the elderly lady on the other side of his house to hang her Christmas tree lights, put her flag up on holidays and to take her to the grocery store any time. His life outside the neighborhood also reflects his kindness and giving. He coaches a young kid’s hockey team. He seems to be available to all of his friends when they need help or assistance or just to be a companion. Congratulations to Terry for being a splendid example to this community!

2018 Association Board of Directors Election to Utilize Online Voting The Dobson Association 2018 Board of Directors election will utilize online voting. A postcard will be sent to homeowners with all the details at the end of February, 2018. More information will be included in future Ranchers’ Roundups. Three positions will be open for a seat on the Board of Directors. Candidates are needed. Please contact the administration office at 480831-8314, if interested. Voting helps to guide association policy and the future of your community. It is an important aspect of community living. Please vote and attend the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Members and Celebration.

All the Colors of the Wind

“Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?” asks the song, Colors of the Wind, from the Disney film Pocahontas. Last month I attended a symposium in Flagstaff dealing with the future of hydrology in the southwest. One presentation was the movie The COLORADO, by William deBuys and Emurat Eyubaglucr, that visually described the Colorado River Basin. Paying close attention to the film, I noticed something I had not seen before – Colorado can be read as color–ado. Certainly, the canyon cut by the Colorado River is grand and colorful; colored, not just by the water, but also painted by the winds blowing through the Canyon. I enjoy visiting the Grand Canyon and experiencing all the colors of the wind. The Rio Colorado, however, is much more and much longer than just the part of the River seen in the Grand Canyon. The River starts in the upper basin: Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado to nourish those lands before feeding the farms and cities of the lower basin: Nevada, California and Arizona as it flows to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. Several cities in Arizona draw from the Colorado River for much of their water needs. Here in our corner of Mesa, we draw water from the Salt River, a tributary of the Gila River which at one time emptied into the Colorado River. We are part of the Colorado River Basin. Water usage in Arizona has been dropping about as fast as the population has been growing; water conservation works. Without water conservation, considerably more water would be needed. Where would that water come from? The “Color-ado” of course. The Grand Canyon would still show nature at its most colorful, but the rest of the River would be empty. The lakes behind the Colorado River dams are low, but they are not without water. That is what our conservation efforts have achieved. We are making the best of it.

BOARD MEETING Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? You can do all that at Dobson Association Board of Directors meetings. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7 pm at La Casita in the Grande room. The next dates are October 19 and November 16. All members are encouraged to attend. If you missed last month’s meeting you can get caught up with the President’s Message on page 1 or login to dobsonranch.com to read the minutes. For more information, please call 480-831-8314. HOLIDAY HOURS Administration will be closed for Veterans Day on Friday November 10, 2017 and Recreation will be closed on Saturday, November 11. Administration and Recreation will also be closed on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 for Thanksgiving. FOBS ARE AVAILABLE Keyless entry fobs are replacing keys at Dobson Ranch common areas. Dobson Ranch homeowners or the designated agent can receive either two fobs or one fob and one smart phone app for the new keyless system. Homeowner key access will continue through November 30, 2017. Please obtain your fobs prior to November 30. Visit dobsonranch.com to complete the Keyless System Agreement & Waiver form, or pick up a form at La Casita, prior to obtaining the fobs. Fobs will be available at La Casita Administration during normal business hours.

Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”. As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter. There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association Administration or Recreation departments. Please be sure to include your account number when remitting your payment. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off. 3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and onetime payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Once logged in, select the one-time payment or auto payment option. If setting up automatic recurring payments, click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you have set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2017. 4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account. If you have questions regarding the various payment options, please contact the administration office for assistance.

Our software conversion is still underway. We are working hard to ensure a smooth and accurate transition. The official launch date will be announced as we get closer to completing the conversion. The software will provide our Finance, Administration and CC&R staff full-featured Accounting and Property Management applications allowing us to better serve our homeowners. Overseeding to Begin in October By Dennis Melgreen Associate Director of Facilities
If you are new to the Ranch community, you may have noticed that the landscape crew has stopped watering the public area lawns and will start mowing as low as a mower can be set. This is referred to as ‘scalping’. This is the first step in getting ready to plant a winter lawn. Since the Bermuda grass and hybrid lawns planted in Valley residences, businesses and golf courses die back in the winter, we are able to have beautiful green lawns to enjoy during our mild winters if we overseed with Perennial Ryegrass. Usually during the first two weeks of October when night time temperatures are steadily below 65 degrees, rye grass seed will germinate and flourish. After scalping and removing all the grass clippings, spread the rye grass seed in amounts as specified on the seed label. Raking the area with a leaf rake will promote good soil contact. Then begin watering. For the first two weeks water 4 to 5 times per day for 5 minutes each cycle. The idea is to keep the seed bed moist at all times. You can cut back to watering in the morning and early afternoon for 10 minutes each cycle during the next two weeks. After the ryegrass is established, the watering cycle can be reset to once a day. When grass grows to 2” tall it is ready to mow. Set mower to cut lawn at 1 ½”. A monthly fertilization schedule with a 16-6-8 or 277-14 blend should begin after the first mowing.

Thank you to all who participated in the 2017 Dobson Ranch Golf Tournament. Congratulations to Jared Keesling, Jason Keesling, Chad Kobald and Andy McKean for taking 1st place. The golf event was a great success again this year. Don’t forget about our upcoming October events! The Fishing Derby and Outdoor Expo at Los Altos was a success. I want to send a special thanks to the fishing club for helping run this great event. We also have our Halloween event coming up on Friday, October 20th. This event includes fun for the whole family with carnival games, a pumpkin parade and movie (Lego Batman) in the park. Paradise Melts and Boca Taco food trucks will be serving great meals this year. Come enjoy all that we have to offer and be a part of the “Howlin’ Good Halloween Night”. We hope to see you all at Laguna Park for some family fun. Lastly, Fall Festival is right around the corner on November 18th. The park celebration starts at 12 pm at Laguna Park. We are still looking for Chili Cook-off Contestants and vendors for the festival. We will be having delicious food from local food truck Mustache Pretzels and our Retirees club will be selling Brats and hotdogs. There will also be bounce houses, carnival games, beer tasting from Sleepy Dog Brewery, the Chili Cook-off, vendors, and live music from Triplicity. Ms. Jessi’s Corner Hello fall! This upcoming season is my absolute favorite. So many reasons it makes me so happy. One being the obvious weather change and all the wonderful fall holidays. This month in preschool we are learning about the fall season and because we get to visit Mother Nature’s Farm, we will focus a bit of learning on farm life. Pumpkins are going to be a big focus. We dissect the insides, make pumpkin goodies to eat and of course, make plenty of pumpkin art! Pumpkin Spool Necklace Materials needed: Empty thread spool Paper or Paint String Markers To make the pumpkin, simply either cover with orange paper or orange paint. Decorate the pumpkin as you wish. Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability. Other rules and restrictions will apply. Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. Table and chair rentals request are made during administration hours (except for holidays) at La Casita Recreation Center.

Fall Happened, Bringing New Energy to DR Pickleball
Boat Permits and Fishing License Information

It’s always a great time for fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply). Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four). Children 7 years and up require a license. For more information, please call the recreation department at 480-831-7464.
Recreation Committee Pickleball Representative
Despite a long hot summer, Dobson Ranch PB is alive and well! And, some of us recently ventured off campus to celebrate the 4 new public pickleball courts at nearby Kleinman Park in Mesa (near Southern and Extension), just finished by the City of Mesa. They feature long hours and state of the art LED lighting into the evening. Our East Valley USAPA Ambassadors convened a celebration on Saturday, September 16 to celebrate the opening and 40 players from the around the East Valley, with a significant attendance from Dobson Ranch, showed up. The immediate goal is to build recreational use of these courts by our neighbors to the north and east, in cooperation with the City of Mesa Recreation Department, with a particular focus on beginning players and youth programs. Thanks to City Council and Parks and Recreation Department for making these new opportunities available to residents in the Fiesta District. Just another example how the sport of pickleball is gaining a lot of ground, with many new public courts in Mesa, Tempe, Phoenix Gilbert,and Chandler in place, and more coming soon. We are supporting the growth of the sport everywhere, and encourage everyone to give it a try. Youth programs are also underway in many schools, with collegiate intermural leagues starting up as well. It is a sport for everyone!! In this vein, we are dedicating courts 5 and 6 at Los Altos on Tuesday night and Saturday mornings to beginners and developing players so they may play with similarly-minded new players in a friendly social environment for learning and enjoying the sport. Experienced players will be available to provide informal instruction and offer tips to developing players. Everyone is welcome! Paddles and balls will be provided. Los Altos Drop-In Play times have moved to “winter hours”: 8 am start times on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, with an evening session on Tuesday at 7 pm. The Dobson Ranch Recreation department hosted the event at the beautiful City of Mesa Golf Course. The tournament fee included lunch, a goodie bag and placement prizes. Many thanks to the wonderful sponsors (see page 13) who helped make the morning a success. This year’s tournament was a sold-out event. You don’t have to be a pro to participate, just love to play golf, so start thinking about getting a foursome together for next year’s tournament!

Well it is supposed to start getting cooler soon, let’s hope. Many of us had a chance to visit other locations, Iowa, Hawaii, Mexico, Montana, Idaho, New York and those are only the ones I remember. Whew lots of family visits and vacation. I hope everyone had a great time and lots of fun! Things should be starting to get into full swing with the club activities. We do still need someone to take over planning our picnics, and more cooks, some of us are making meals two months in a row and I know there are many great cooks out there. Please step up and keep our club great! Hiking on Wednesdays, Tuesday and Friday is biking (pick your speed and distance), Ladies lunch is always on the second Thursday of the month with different locations around Mesa (always looking for suggestions for new restaurants), the first Thursday of the month is game day at LA Casita and the last Friday is movie day at Pollock, Judie does a great job with these. The second Monday of the month is men’s breakfast. On the third Tuesday is dinner night, and don’t forget happy hour on the last Wednesday of the month. This month for dinner night, it will be an Octoberfest potluck, the club supplied the brats and buns, it will be a great time at the Duke’s, make sure you are signed up!
Fishing Club By Ed Ricci
The Dobson Ranch Kid’s Fishing Tournament and Outdoor Days was held on October 7. We’ll provide more details in the next RoundUp. As of this writing, our lake temperatures are starting to come down. This coincides with shorter day lengths, and sub- 100 daytime temperatures. Fishing has been tough for me. Maybe I am not holding my mouth right, or maybe it was that bad haircut I got. Anyway, I am sure many of you are having more luck than me. The last three times I went out I caught 0, 0, and 3 bass. So- let’s just say I am making a minor comeback. Fish seem to be biting best in late morning or early afternoon, compared to dawn and dusk. Go figure. To continue with my own results, I have had a hard time getting fish to bite on reaction baits like crankbaits or topwater. The drop shot rig with robo worm has been my salvation. It usually is. But I will also stick with the reaction baits. As water temperatures continue to decline and bass feed more aggressively, reaction baits will become better. I really like the rattletrap in the Fall. Bass hit it like a freight train. So will catfish. Swimbaits will also be good. The HOA decided to dye the lakes during the week of 9/18 to cut back on floating algae. Decreasing water temperatures will also do the trick. It takes a week or so after the lakes are dyed for the fish to settle down into normal feeding patterns. Happy fishing

Garden Club Please Join Us! Tuesday, November 7 7:00 pm at La Casita Growing Paper Whites Back by popular demand---a program on growing paper whites! Learn how to have a White Christmas at your home at the Tuesday, November 7 Garden Club meeting. The 7:00 p.m. meeting, held at La Casita, is open to all Ranch residents and their guests at no charge. Several Garden Club members will share their tips on planting paper whites, led by well known floral designer Donna Chapman. The demonstration will include examples of the types of containers to use for these fragrant flowers. Members will be potting up these bulbs to show how they use them during the holiday season. There will also be information on amaryllis and muscari bulbs. Come join the “plant” demonstration. It is an informal gathering for those who enjoy the beauty of gardens and plants.
Women’s Club It is Fall and our weather is only going to get better. The Out to Lunch group went to the Pink Pepper in Sept. They are under new ownership. They could not have been nicer and more accommodating. We suggest you give them a try. October 6th, we went to the Thirsty Lion. We have been there before and have always had a very good food and fun time. November 3rd, we are going to House of Tricks in Tempe. Hope itis nice enough for us to sit outside on the patio. Dobson High / ABODA State Marching Band Festival
Dobson High School, in partnership with the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association, ABODA, holds its State Marching Band Festival this November. This is the second consecutive year that the event is being held at the Dobson football stadium. On Saturday, November 4 this all-day competition will showcase some of the most talented marching bands in Arizona. Approximately 8,000 people and 30 bands are expected to attend, including several prominent local high schools. Bands perform themed shows incorporating innovative props and colorful visuals into their music. Each school must earn their spot in this event by scoring high during competitions held around the state during September and October. The 10 highest-scoring bands in each division advance to participate in the state finals competition. Bring your family and friends and join us for a day of music and spectacle. Several vendors will be there throughout the day selling food, drinks, treats, and gifts. Tickets are $10 at the event. Dobson High School: 1501 W Guadalupe Rd, Mesa, AZ 85202.
Dobson High School Highlights Award and Achievements: English teacher Kim Klett traveled to Sarajevo and Srebenica, Bosnia, in August with the Educators’ Institute for Human Rights. In Bosnia, Mrs. Klett worked with teachers and non-government organizations to work on Holocaust education. Congratulations to Laurel Quigley who NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) named as a Superior Writer. Of the 517 juniors who were nominated for the 2016-2017 school year, only 106 were honored with this distinction across the country and Laurel was 1 of only 4 named in the state of Arizona. She was nominated by Ms. Elizabeth Viator. Francisco Heredia appointed as District 3 Councilmember The Mesa City Council, during a special Council meeting this morning, has appointed Francisco Heredia to serve as District 3 Councilmember. Heredia was one of five finalists selected from a pool of 31 eligible applicants by the City Council at the Sept. 21 City Council Study Session. Heredia most recently worked as the Community Relations Manager for Maricopa County Recorder. He has also worked as the National Field Director for Mi Familia Vota and One Arizona, as well as for the United States Census Bureau, Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System and Chicanos Por La Causa. While living in Chandler, he was appointed to the Housing and Human Services Commission. Heredia holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a Certificate in American Public Policy and a Masters in Public Administration from Arizona State University. Mesa City Clerk DeeAnn Mickelsen officially swore Mr. Heredia into office this morning. A formal swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Oct. 2 City Council meeting. Pet Food Facts By Amber Balmer

Clients often ask us what the ‘best’ brand of pet food is. The ultimate answer is that it is up to your pet! You can spend a lot of money on a specific brand of food but if your fur baby does not want to eat it, then it is no better than the cheapest food. There is definitely a correlation between cost and quality. Here is some food for thought regarding your fur baby’s meals: • Chicken by product meal – There is nothing bad about this ingredient. Chicken by product meal is primarily composed of viscera which is rich in nutrients needed to provide a balanced diet. • Prescription Diets – Sometimes a fur baby can develop a medical issue that can be treated and managed with a very specific diet that is actually prescription strength. Bladder stones, urinary issues, renal disease, and gastro-intestinal disorders can all be managed with a very strict prescription diet. • Limited Ingredient Diet – Dogs and cats can develop food allergies at any point in their lives. If your fur baby is very itchy, has chronic ear infections, experiencing hair loss or bad flatulence chances are good that your kiddo may be allergic to the main protein source used in their diet. Usually the most common offenders are chicken and beef, so trying a ‘novel protein’ or new protein source like fish or venison may be best to help control food allergies. • Raw diet –In truth there is no evidence that feeding your fur baby raw meat is more beneficial than a traditional dry food diet. Also there is a high risk of bacterial infection like E.coli or salmonella. It is important to remember that whenever you change diets to gradually change the food over a period of a week or so. An abrupt change in food can sometimes cause diarrhea. As always, check with your veterinarian to discuss the best food options for your fur baby!

The Dobson Association Will Be Represented in the East Valley Veterans Parade This year, the East Valley Veterans Parade Association will have their annual Veterans Day parade on Saturday, November 11 at 11:00 am, and Dobson Ranch will participate by entering a float. The parade starts on Center St. and University Dr. in Mesa and runs South on Center St. to 1st St. It then turns west onto 1st St. and continues to Robson.
