Dear Discovery Community, This spring, we celebrate a remarkable milestone: 35 years of Discovery School. For more than three decades, our school has been a place where curiosity is nurtured, individuality is honored, and a love of learning takes root and grows.

Milestones like this invite us to reflect. We think of the vision and courage of our founders, the dedication of our educators past and present, and the generations of students and families who have shaped the vibrant community we know today. Discovery’s story is one of continuous growth, guided by a clear purpose and strengthened by the people who believe in it.

This year has been a joyful expression of that legacy. Across campus, students have embraced challenges, explored new ideas, and supported one another with empathy and respect.

Whether in classrooms, on field trips, on stage, or on the field, they embody the spirit of Discovery - engaged, thoughtful, and eager to make a difference.

As we celebrate our past, we remain focused on the future we are building together. The world our students are entering is ever-changing, but our mission endures: to develop confident, compassionate, and capable learners who are prepared not only to navigate the future but to shape it.

Educator John Dewey once wrote, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” This idea resonates deeply within our community. Every experience at Discovery - every question asked, every risk taken, every connection made contributes to the meaningful journey of becoming.

As you’re celebrating your 20th Anniversary working at The Discovery School, walk us back to what inspired you to work here?

When I first walked onto this campus 20 years ago, I found myself in a sweet little village of a campus with incredible classrooms and a community with plenty of opportunity. For me, I was never going to be a teacher, or so I thought, but the opportunity was presented for me to join as an associate teacher in the Primary program. After just receiving my degree in Psychology with a focus on child development, I figured it couldn’t hurt to take the small role and see where the job might take me. The added bonus for me was getting the chance to work with my mom, who was also an associate teacher at the time. Little did I know that the young college graduate would find her forever home on this campus. It’s given me some of my best friends, a school home for my children, incredible professional opportunities, and more memories than I can count.

What is it about Discovery that has made it your home for the past two decades?

What makes Discovery my ' home' is the rare balance of professional growth and personal connection. Over the last two decades, I’ve transitioned from the classroom to leadership, but the core of why I stay remains the same: the people. Being part of the Discovery team— and having the privilege of raising my children here on campus—has created a bond with this school that goes beyond a job title. It’s been twenty years of shared stories, and I am honored to be a part of its history.

How have you seen the school change and grow since you first started?

The school is constantly evolving, which is one of our greatest strengths. We are always refining how we approach education to keep up with a changing world. A major milestone for me was being part of our IB authorization process. It proved that we were brave enough to look beyond our traditional foundations to bring something world-class to our students. Seeing that growth from a 'little village' to a leader in education has been incredible. Watching our middle school grow and shape what our next 20 years look like has been such an incredible value added to our community.

Using only one word, how would you define The Discovery School?

Dynamic. In my 20 years here at Discovery, we have never stayed static. We have been refining our approach to education and how best to serve the students we are lucky enough to teach.

What is the most rewarding part of the relationships you’ve built over the years?

The 'full circle' moments. There is nothing quite like meeting a family when their child is just a toddler and then, years later, seeing that same student return as a confident alum to share their successes in high school or college. It’s a constant reminder that the work we do here has a lifelong impact. I’ve had the pleasure of watching many students grow into incredible young adults, and I’m so proud that Discovery can be a chapter in the story they are writing.

What excites you most about the next 10 years for Discovery?

Having watched us evolve from a small Montessori school into a recognizable, respected brand in the beach community is an achievement we should all be proud of. But our story is still being written! I believe that in the coming years, Discovery will expand to offer a truly unique independent high school experience, fulfilling a vital need for our families. My hope is that our name becomes synonymous with innovation and empathy, anchored in the deep-rooted Montessori and IB foundations that set us apart.

If you had unlimited resources, what initiative would you launch for our school?

With unlimited funds, I would want to make all of Discovery's dreams come true. The goal would be to complete our current campus and then build the dream high school campus, ideally at the beach, with full athletic facilities, a performing arts building, and state-of-the-art STEM and innovation facilities. I would want to leave a legacy of a school community that continues to serve our community for generations to come.

What advice would you give to a family or team member just starting their journey at Discovery?

My best advice is to jump in with an open heart. Discovery is a rare kind of community that truly gives back what you put into it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, join the traditions, and fully embrace what the community has to offer. It’s important to remember you aren’t just joining any old school; Discovery is a place that will support you and grow with you for years to come.

If you had to pick a moment that captures the spirit of the school, what would it be?

Choosing a single memory is impossible because the magic of Discovery lies in the people. My journey here has been defined by three things: friendships that have become family, the joy of raising my children in this community, and the pride of growing professionally alongside the school. Looking back, it’s the combination of those moments that has made the last two decades so special.

CYCLES OF DISCOVERY: NATURE, NUTURE, AND THE TODDLER PROGRAM

Around the world, spring welcomes families with warm weather and new growth. Plants return to their green hues, and flowers dot trees and bushes. Longer days allow for more time outdoors in the evenings, and make many of us grateful after the dark days of winter. Nature, like schools, flows in predictable cycles. This cyclical rhythm allows us to reflect on how much our own children have grown over the course of the year. .

Last fall, many toddlers stepped onto campus for the first time. Some students were apprehensive about their new daily routine, shedding tears, or holding their parents close each morning at drop off. Many children were tentative around their peers, choosing to work independently or next to a peer rather than truly collaborating. The Toddler Team met each child exactly as they were, eager to help them find their place in the classroom community.

During these first few weeks of school, teachers engage students with art work, playdoh, or other familiar and exciting tasks. These experiences help students feel at ease in their new environment. Many students proudly present pieces of artwork to their teachers and declare, “this is for mommy” or “this is for daddy.”

Teachers love to see students making the connection that home and school are both safe places.

Students also begin to understand the flow of their new routine at school - where to put their lunch box, how to wash their hands for snack, what songs we sing at circle time or before we eat. Many families are unaware of just how confident their child is in these daily routines, only getting a glimpse into this world during parent crafts of when their child comes home singing, “the Earth is good to us.” Each mastered routine is a milestone for the child and their teacher.

As the seasons changed, so did our youngest learners. Personalities blossomed and friendships formed. The Toddler Team is grateful for the opportunity to have guided students through these experiences. From the first time a child bravely asked, “May I join you?” to students cooperatively engaging in imaginative play, Discovery Toddlers progressed through social milestones at their own pace. Our backyards’ are now filled with students cooperatively playing dinosaurs, inventing obstacle courses, or cooking for each other in the play kitchens.

As the school year comes to a close, it is inspiring to see just how far these children have come. The confidence that now carries them into the classroom each morning, the friendships that have taken root, and the independence they demonstrate in their daily work are all signs of meaningful growth. Like the world around them, our toddlers are in constant motion—growing, changing, and becoming more fully themselves each day. We are honored to witness this transformation and to continue nurturing each child as they flourish within our community.

HONORING THE JOURNEY: THE PRIMARY PROGRAM

Maria Montessori believed that the goal of early childhood education is to activate the child’s own natural desire to learn. The Discovery Primary team wholeheartedly agrees with that sentiment.

Throughout the year, the Primary Team designs lessons and opportunities to captivate students’ attention and engage their innate curiosity. In some cases, that looks like weaving sea creatures or dinosaurs through all areas of the classroom. In other cases, teachers might conduct science experiments during group time to help students understand a concept introduced in a book or a work on the shelf. Regardless of the subject or idea, our teachers are committed to sparking student interest and guiding them through the inquiry process.

In a Montessori classroom, students are the drivers of their own learning. They select lessons from the shelves that challenge them. Sometimes they receive lessons from an older student or the teacher, but often they work independently on a task of their choosing until they have mastered the skill. There is nothing like the joy on a child’s face the first time they complete a challenging work independently.

The beauty of Montessori is that challenging work varies from child to child. For some students, teen numbers are challenging. For others, sequencing the numbers 101-200 poses a challenge. Older students might engage in multiplication or division with hands-on manipulatives. The teachers recognize and support each child’s learning based on their own stage of development.

Each Spring, it is a joy to welcome families into the classrooms for Lesson Showcase. Lesson Showcase provides students with the opportunity to share their learning with their parents. Children select a variety of works that they have mastered and act as teachers for their family members. During Lesson Showcase, students sit up a little straighter, move through the classroom with more purpose, and take their role as “teacher” very seriously.

There is nothing quite like watching a child light up as they segment the phonemes in a word and select the corresponding letters while word building.

Other students might take a serious tone when correcting their parents on the proper way to use and reset a practical life lesson. Lesson Showcase gives our students the opportunity to share everything they have learned with their family members.

Lesson Showcase is more than a celebration of skills; it is a window into the confident, curious learners our children will become. When students step into the role of teacher, they reveal not only what they know but how deeply they understand and value their own learning journey. These moments reflect the heart of our work: nurturing independence, fostering intrinsic motivation, and honoring each child’s unique path of discovery. As the year comes to a close, we are reminded that the true success of a Montessori education is not measured by what is taught, but by the spark of curiosity and capability that continues to grow within each child long after they leave the classroom

FROM INQUIRY TO IMPACT: THE JOURNEY OF AN IB STUDENT The Mock Trial

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is committed to an education that inspires and prepares students to make the world a better place. At the heart of the IB philosophy is the belief that learning should go beyond the classroom — connecting subject areas around big ideas, sparking curiosity, and empowering students to think critically about the world they inhabit.

At our school, we see this come to life every day. Our students are not just preparing for the future — they are already beginning to shape it.

Learning is transdisciplinary.

“Transdisciplinarity provokes learners into reflecting on, and reconsidering, what they believe about the world and about their place in it. In his seminal work, Freire (2005: 81) believed: “students, as they are increasingly posed with problems relating to themselves in the world and with the world, will feel increasingly challenged and obliged to respond to that challenge”.

The UE classroom was transformed into a courtroom, where students took on the roles of prosecuting and defense attorneys, as well as witnesses and experts. The mock trial experience provided a rich scenario that required critical thinking, research, public speaking, and a bit of drama.

Students drew on their unit about inventions, which explored the idea that humans use scientific and technological understanding to create innovations that impact everyday life. The mock trial posed the question of whether certain inventions, including the airplane and paper, have had an overall positive or negative impact on our world.

The practice of this type of ethical thinking is increasingly important as we begin to navigate the use of new technologies such as AI.

Learning Inquiry “Through the inquiry process, learners develop and sustain positive relationships with peers, teachers and others in the learning community in a spirit of active engagement. They also strive to make meaningful connections with environments, ideas, materials and concepts”

Trip to Crystal River LE students visited Crystal River to view manatees in their natural habitat. They observed these gentle creatures up close and were awed by their massiveness and beauty.

They also heard from a biologist about the manatees and the ecosystem they call home.

This field experience brought together their geographical learning. Students researched climate zones prior to the visit, deepening their understanding of the diversity of living things and their interactions and interdependence.

This learning also supported their understanding of their novel study, Life on the St. Johns River.

Ultimately, students discovered that research can take many forms — through observation, reading, and conversations with experts.

Action “Action, the core of student agency, is an integral part of the PYP learning process and connects deeply with the program’s ultimate aim — internationalmindedness. When students take action, they begin to understand their responsibility in the world and see themselves as capable, competent, and active agents of change” (Source: IB PYP: From Principles into Practice. Trash to Treasure Museum Foundational Elementary students were thrilled to invite families and community members to their museum, where they showcased art created from recycled materials. Throughout the unit, under the transdisciplinary theme Sharing the Planet, students investigated types of pollution and their causes, classified materials by their properties, and explored the process of biodegradation. After discovering how long certain materials remain in our oceans and landfills, students were inspired to embrace the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Each art creation gave students the opportunity to reuse materials in meaningful ways. They applied their design and planning skills by sketching out ideas, then used their writing skills to compose a paragraph describing their creation. They were proud to present their artworks to classmates and parents.

Middle School Minimester Magic!

This January, our middle schoolers didn't just return from winter break… they launched back into learning with our inaugural Minimester! Designed as a week of hands-on exploration, Minimester 2026 invited students to follow their curiosity, ignite new passions, and rediscover the joy of learning.

Students elected to participate in one of three dynamic, cross-curricular workshops led by experts in their fields, giving them the chance to see realworld applications of classroom learning. Through the Minimester experience, the Middle School Team hoped to show students that while education may begin in the classroom, the most impactful learning often extends far beyond classroom walls.

With that idea in mind, each group of students explored a curated collection of resources on their topic, choosing articles, videos, and podcasts that sparked their curiosity. As they researched, students built background knowledge, which they used to craft guiding questions they would investigate throughout the week.

As the week progressed, excitement shifted off campus as students traveled to their workshop sites for two full-day, immersive adventures. Groups participated in one of three experiential, cross-curricular workshops: Ready, Set, Row! — in partnership with the Jacksonville University Rowing Team Let’s Get Cooking — in collaboration with Jax Cooking Studio and The Plantation CTRL the Future — in partnership with AnuVision Technologies

Upon returning to the classroom in January, students dove into inquiry-based research that set the stage for the hands-on experiences ahead. John Dewey, a psychologist who believed strongly in student-centered learning, once said, “Interest in the subject at hand is the best stimulus for learning.”

We are incredibly grateful to our partner organizations, who graciously welcomed our students, enabling them to step outside the classroom to engage in real-world learning. As a result of their workshop experiences, students deepened their understanding of concepts they often encounter only in theory. Novice rowers discovered that physics powers every stroke and teamwork is crucial to achieving synchronicity in the boat, and used STEM skills to repair carbon fiber racing shells. Aspiring chefs practiced precise measuring, observed how chemical reactions transform ingredients, and witnessed how creativity shapes culinary creations.

Chef Craig Porter, Director of Culinary Operations at The Plantation at Ponte Vedra Beach, was astonished by the “critical thinking the teachers elicited” and noted that he hopes that his grandchildren “receive the level of education and dedication the Discovery School is exposing students to.” Meanwhile, our tech enthusiasts experienced the future of interactive media firsthand. They were captivated by holograms, robotics, and immersive sound technology, exploring ways these innovations can strengthen communication and enhance engagement. Mark Elliot, Director of Marketing and Training at Anuvision, commented, “It was a pleasure working with the Discovery students. Their curiosity, manners, and excitement were overwhelming.”

Once back in the classroom, students shifted from exploration to collaboration as they prepared to share their discoveries with their peers. Working together, teams revisited their guiding questions to create engaging presentations, which showcased not only what they learned but also their confidence and enthusiasm. Seventh grader Gavin Buccilli remarked, “It was cool to share that the benefits of rowing, like teamwork, discipline, and adaptability, are the same things we will use in our real jobs one day.” Students also valued the opportunity to strengthen their communication skills in an informal setting, practice that prepared them to present their Little Big History projects in the spring.

More powerfully than any suggestions from their teachers, the Minimester experience reminded our middle schoolers that learning can be both a joyful adventure and a worthwhile pursuit. Students returned to their regular classes more confident, more curious, and more aware of how their classroom learning connects to the wider world.

These exciting, hands-on experiences are one more way Discovery is opening students’ minds as they strive to build a better world for us all.

Passport to Pura Vida

Learning at Discovery happens in the tropics in addition to the classroom! In spring, our Middle School students embarked on a memorable field trip to Costa Rica, a country renowned for its “Pura Vida” lifestyle, incredible biodiversity, and rich cultural heritage. While the trip took students outside the classroom, the journey was more than a vacation. It was a hands-on learning experience that encouraged exploration, fostered greater independence and responsibility, and left students with deeper friendships, newfound knowledge, and fond memories to last a lifetime.

The international trip was planned with Go Journey Abroad, a company specializing in coordinating academic and experiential journeys overseas, to provide a balance of adventure and learning. After their arrival, the group began their stay with a scavenger hunt in a local marketplace. Students’ facility with Spanish helped them navigate the maze of colorful stalls and enthusiastically interact with vendors. Eighth-grader Raelyn Waldron shared, “Using Spanish in the marketplace really helped us feel more immersed in the trip. It also made it much easier for our group to find our way around. Ms. Chantal teaches with very little English spoken in class, so I felt well prepared to speak Spanish in that situation.” After exploring the market, students took the fruit they purchased to a local “soda,” or small restaurant, where they sampled guava, water apple, star fruit, and tamarind.

Later in the week, the class ventured into the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, nestled in the highlands of the Alajuela Province, where they visited the park’s animal sanctuary to learn more about the area’s lush biodiversity and native wildlife before hiking to the falls. According to seventh grader Sofia Turci, “The hike was really fun, and it wasn’t as hard as it looked. The waterfalls were beautiful, and we had a great time talking with each other along the way.” After the hike, students enjoyed sweet strawberries grown in the fertile volcanic soil and swimming in creamy dulce de leche! Another highlight was their tour of an organic farm during which they learned the intricacies of chocolate and sugar-making, presentations that related to topics several explored in their Little Big History projects.

Finally, the group experienced the adrenaline rush of ziplining high above La Fortuna Waterfall in beautiful sunny weather, which provided a clear view of the Arenal volcano. Students supported each other and cheered each other on, leaving with joyful smiles and the sense of accomplishment that comes from meeting a challenge head-on.

Beyond exploring natural wonders, the trip included a deep dive into Costa Rica’s vibrant culture. Students visited with the indigenous Maleku tribe, learned to dance Cumbia, and cooked and sampled traditional dishes, including empanadas and fresh fruit punch. At another stop, they painted miniature ox carts, symbols of Costa Rica’s coffee-growing heritage that represent hard work, family tradition, and pride. Seventh grader Mara Bulugean, winner of the ox cart painting contest, commented, “I made an absolute mess while I painted, but I had so much fun doing it!”

While visiting the Museo de los Niños, they practiced their language skills by creating a morning news show featuring a weather forecast in addition to cooking, fashion, and breaking news segments. They also participated in a grocery shopping activity in which they shopped for healthy food while staying within a designated budget of colones, the Costa Rican currency.

Throughout these immersive programs, our middle schoolers served as outstanding Discovery ambassadors, receiving compliments on their enthusiastic engagement, thoughtful questions, and courteous manners everywhere they went.

Throughout the week, fun-filled excursions and authentic interactions provided students with a broader understanding of Costa Rican life, traditions, and values, enriching their overall experience. Eighth-grader Jaelyn Venn summed up the journey when she reflected, “Our trip to Costa Rica showed me how even ordinary things can look really beautiful in a different place. It helped connect the Spanish we’ve been learning in class to real life, where people speak it every day. It was exciting to realize we could speak Spanish better than we thought! I’m really grateful for this experience, and I hope to go back to Costa Rica again someday.” Our second international field trip not only strengthened bonds and deepened students’ cultural understanding but also inspired a lasting sense of confidence, curiosity, and appreciation for the world around them.

Celebrating Excellence in Middle Shool

This spring marked an exciting milestone for the Middle School program as we proudly hosted our inaugural National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Induction Ceremony. In a meaningful and inspiring event, eight seventh and eighth-grade students, who have excelled academically and distinguished themselves as role models who contribute positively to the culture and spirit of Discovery, were inducted into this prestigious national organization. The National Junior Honor Society recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in the five pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship. We were especially honored to have alumna Clara Murillo (‘23) lead the ceremony. Clara’s participation provided a beautiful full-circle moment that perfectly illustrated the Discovery journey and the transformative leadership we strive to instill in every student. Please join us in celebrating our inaugural NJHS members.

Chart ing New Wat ers: Discovery’s Part nership wit h OCEARCH

Every now and then, school offers a moment that sticks. The kind students talk about long after the lesson ends. Discovery’s partnership with OCEARCH is shaping up to be one of those moments.

Through this partnership, students have the opportunity to step into the world of real marine science. Throughout the school year, they have tracked sharks in real time, explored ocean ecosystems, and begun to understand just how important these animals are to the health of our planet. What once felt far away became tangible right in front of them.

And soon, it became even more real. During the month of April, every elementary and middle school student visited the OCEARCH research vessel in Mayport. They walked the decks, observed the equipment, and met the dedicated individuals doing this work every day. During their time aboard, students took part in hands-on STEM activities alongside OCEARCH staff, giving them a chance to learn by doing and to engage directly with the science in front of them. It is one thing to read about science.

It is another to explore it up close.

This experience is already taking shape in the classroom. As a school, we have adopted a great white shark named Contender, following its journey and using real data to guide our questions and learning. It has given students something to root for, something to return to, and something that makes the science feel personal.

Our commitment does not stop there. Through our student-led philanthropy initiative, the Annual Shrimp Boil, Discovery will continue to support OCEARCH's work. In this way, students are not only learning about marine conservation but also actively contributing to it.

For many of our students, this will be a first… a first time seeing what science looks like outside of a classroom and a first time realizing that the concepts they are learning now could become something much bigger down the road.

Our partnership with OCEARCH reflects The Discovery School’s belief that learning should be meaningful, connected, and real. We want students to ask big questions, explore boldly, and see themselves as part of something larger. And maybe, just maybe, a few of them will step off that boat thinking, “I could do this one day.” When that happens, then we can be confident that we are charting a course in exactly the right direction.

This fall, our students brought magic, laughter, and heart to the stage with their production of Shrek Jr. —and it quickly became my favorite performance to date. From the very first rehearsal to the final curtain call, this show was special not just because of the talent on stage, but also because of the joy, resilience, and teamwork that carried it.

This year’s production was held at the Robinson Theater at the University of North Florida, a venue that holds deep sentimental value for both me and my choreographer, Ms. RaeAnne. As proud alumnae, we each had meaningful moments on that very stage during our own performing years, making this experience feel full circle. Watching our students step into that same spotlight was both surreal and incredibly rewarding.

What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is the timeline. Our actors had just four short months to prepare—but you never would have guessed it. Their dedication to character development, choreography, and vocal performance was unwavering. They embraced one of theater’s greatest lessons: no matter what happens, the show must go on. They proved it night after night with confidence and professionalism well beyond their years, delivering outstanding performances at the University of North Florida and closing their run with a final show at Fleet Landing that was both polished and heartfelt.

Our Set & Prop Design crew, led by the incredible Ms. Maggie Venn, created a vibrant, imaginative world that truly brought the story to life. Every detail, from whimsical backdrops to clever props, added depth and authenticity to the production. Meanwhile, Mr. Adam worked tirelessly with our cast to ensure that every note was strong, polished, and full of emotion. The result was a show that looked and sounded exceptional.

This year’s performance was also bittersweet, as we celebrated two graduating eighth graders who have left an undeniable mark on our program. Isabel Gonzalez, who took on the role of Shrek, has been part of my productions since she first joined theater club four years ago. She is an extraordinary performer with the rare ability to fully transform into any character she plays. Her comedic timing is impeccable, her voice is powerful, and her stage presence is captivating. I am beyond proud to share that she has been accepted into the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, where she will undoubtedly continue to shine.

The athletics program fielded five teams this season: JV Boys Basketball, Varsity Boys Basketball, JV Flag Football, Varsity Flag Football, and Varsity Soccer, showcasing a strong commitment to competition, teamwork, and school pride across multiple sports.

Each team brought its own energy and determination, giving students plenty of opportunities to compete, grow, and represent the school (and, of course, go through an impressive number of water bottles along the way).

The JV Basketball team may not have dominated the standings, but they carved out their own place in the record books by earning a school-record three wins.

While it might not sound like a dynasty just yet, every great program has humble beginnings—and this group set the foundation for future success while keeping things competitive and spirited all season long.

Meanwhile, JV Flag Football rose to the occasion in a big way, capturing the school’s second NFISAC Championship overall and, even more notably, the first-ever Flag Football Championship. Their achievement not only added hardware to the trophy case but also cemented their place in school history— safe to say they set the bar pretty high for future teams Dolphin Dispatch | Page 24

This spring, we were proud to debut our new cheerleading program, thanks to the dedication of Ms. RaeAnne. The squad made an immediate impact, cheering on our flag football and soccer athletes and bringing an extra dose of spirit to Dolphin Day. We are excited to see this new after-school offering continue to grow!

Beyond team sports, the school community came together for the first-ever Coach Chad’s Chase 1 Mile and 5K, which proved to be a tremendous success.

With over 250 participants, the event combined fitness, fun, and fellowship, bringing out runners, walkers, and enthusiastic supporters alike. Participants were treated to a generous spread from Panera, and each received a medal for finishing—because nothing motivates like the promise of good food and a wellearned keepsake.

Overall, it was a season filled with growth, achievement, and plenty of memorable moments— from record-setting efforts and championship victories to a community race that brought everyone together.

If this year is any indication, the future of the athletics program looks bright—and possibly a little faster, too.

Insights & Inspiration: A Look Back at This Year’s Parent Workshops This school year, we continued to strengthen the partnership between home and classroom by offering a rich series of parent education events designed to inform, support, and connect our community. From early childhood foundations to navigating the complexities of adolescence, these sessions provided families with practical tools, research-based insights, and meaningful opportunities for dialogue. We are thankful for all the community experts we were able to welcome and for the high interest and attendance at the events.

Our early childhood programming was especially vibrant this season. Workshops such as Adventurous Eaters, led by nutritionist and Discovery parent Katie Hammill, encouraged families to foster healthy relationships with food through curiosity and exposure, while Donut Panic About Primary offered reassurance and clarity for parents preparing for the transition into the primary years.

Sessions like Montessori at Home empowered families to extend classroom principles into daily routines, and Potty Training provided guidance rooted in respect, readiness, and developmental understanding. Literacy remained a central focus as well, with Loving Literacy highlighting ways to nurture a lifelong love of reading, alongside Welcome to Kindergarten and Preparing for Kindergarten, which helped families feel confident and excited about this important milestone.

A cornerstone of our parent education offerings remains our Book Club, thoughtfully led by our school counselor, Ms. Ellen. Our series began with Middle School Superpowers by Phyllis L. Fagell, designed for families preparing for or currently experiencing the middle school years. This session invited parents to explore how to best support children through the challenges and opportunities of early adolescence. Supported by local clinician Elizabeth Winings, this collaborative discussion provided both professional expertise and practical strategies.

This spring, discussions included Hello, Cruel World by Melinda Wenner Moyer, which sparked meaningful conversations around raising resilient, thoughtful children in today’s complex world.

Parents engaged deeply with topics such as fostering empathy, managing peer dynamics, and supporting children’s emotional well-being.

Additional discussions explored The Way of Play by Tina Payne Byrson and Georgie Wisen-Vincent for younger students, emphasizing the critical role of play in development with guest speakers Anna Farrin and Beth Collins Himes from The Healing Playroom. This year’s final discussion was on NurtureShock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman, exploring how parenting research and advice have evolved over the past decade.

For our elementary and middle school families, we expanded programming to address timely and relevant topics. Our Internet Safety sessions provided practical strategies for helping children navigate the digital world responsibly and safely. We were also proud to host Coffee with a Cop in partnership with the Jacksonville Beach Police Department, creating a welcoming space for families to connect with local officers, learn about crime prevention, and reinforce the important message: “See something, say something.” This event strengthened community ties while promoting awareness and safety.

Together, these events reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting the whole child by engaging and empowering families. We are grateful for the strong participation and look forward to continuing these meaningful conversations in the seasons ahead.

In the world of education, we often talk about the "triad” - the essential bond between students, teachers, and parents. At a school like ours, where we value the independence of Montessori and the global mindset of IB, that bond is everything. But this year, it feels like that connection has grown into something even bigger: a true neighborhood.

If you’ve walked through the Sleiman Building Atrium on a Tuesday morning lately, you’ve probably smelled the fresh coffee and heard the laughter. Our PTO meetings are seeing record-breaking attendance, but it’s not just about the numbers. It’s about the feeling in the room.

Room for Everyone at the Table This year was all about making sure every parent felt plugged in. We didn’t just want to "run events"; we wanted to build a community that lasts. To do that, the PTO rolled out a new grade-level liaison program. Whether you have a toddler just starting out or a middle schooler getting ready for high school, you now have a direct line to what’s happening.

We’ve also focused on building a sustainable "lead" structure for the new PTO Executive Committees.

We’re so excited to have filled our committee lead seats for next year, creating a solid foundation that allows new voices and fresh ideas to thrive without anyone feeling overwhelmed.

More Than Just a School Group: The Dolphin Social Club One of the year's brightest highlights has been the launch of the Dolphin Social Club. We know that parents need a "village" just as much as the kids do, and this club has truly brought that to life.

From busy Wednesday morning coffees at Le Petit Paris to our first-ever Moms’ Night Out at Buddha Thai Bistro and Dads’ Night Out at Mayport Brewing, the goal was simple: get together and have fun. We even took our community on the move with "Wellness Wednesdays," exploring local bridges and beaches while chatting with experts like Katie Hammill about keeping our families healthy. These moments turned "school parents" into real friends.

A Year of Big Wins Our campus has stayed busy this year with events that brought the "wow" factor: • The Fall Festival: Who could forget October 18?

We turned the campus into an autumn wonderland, and the response was incredible with over 600 people joined us, a record-breaking turnout that showed just how much our community is craving connection.

• Around the World: On April 18, we celebrated the beautiful diversity of our families. With 26 country booths, it was a day of incredible food, activities, and pride in our many different heritages.

• Seasonal Fun: From the Mid-Summer Playdate that welcomed new faces to our inaugural Primary Outing/Toddler Playdate, there was truly something for every age group.

Supporting Our Superstars While we love a good party, the PTO’s most important job is saying "thank you" to the people who teach and care for our children. The monthly coffee truck has become a favorite tradition, bringing a little extra joy (and caffeine!) to our amazing staff. During Teacher Appreciation Week, the outpouring of gratitude from families was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do.

It was a genuine joy to witness our campus transformed into a global tapestry of culture, history, and creativity. Seeing almost six hundred students and families explore and celebrate traditions of a distant continent or the flavors of a global kitchen— beautifully reflected the curious, connected community that defines The Discovery School. These moments of global citizenship and shared learning are the heartbeat of who we are.

THE DISCOVERY SCHOOL: A LEGACY OF CURIOSITY AND COMMUNITY

Thirty-five years ago, the founding of The Discovery School began not with a grand plan, but with a question.

As a scientist, questions have always been the starting point of my work. When I moved to Jacksonville Beach, I expected to continue my career in research. Instead, I quickly discovered that there were no research opportunities available in the area at the time. Both Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida were focused primarily on undergraduate teaching, and the Mayo Clinic had only just arrived and would not establish research facilities for years.

So, like many scientists placed in an unfamiliar environment, I began by observing.

At the center of my life were my two young children, and my attention soon turned to the fascinating question of how young minds learn.

Around that time, Montessori preschool education had recently been introduced to our community. I enrolled my daughter, and soon after, my son. They joined one of the very first classes.

The classroom was peaceful but alive with activity.

Children moved freely among carefully prepared materials designed to teach language, mathematics, and the natural world. They were deeply engaged, curious, and confident in their work. The teachers acted more as guides than lecturers, creating an environment of respect and independence.

As someone trained to observe patterns and outcomes, I was captivated.

I began reading extensively about Dr. Maria Montessori and her philosophy of child-centered education. Montessori herself was a scientist—the first woman in Italy to earn a medical degree—and she believed strongly in observing the natural development of children. Her philosophy was grounded in a powerful truth: every child is born with an innate desire to understand how the world works. The role of the teacher, whom she called the “director,” is to prepare an environment that allows the child to discover knowledge independently.

What I witnessed there was extraordinary.

My scientific training proved unexpectedly useful in this endeavor. Graduate research teaches you to ask difficult questions, gather information, collaborate with others, and persist through obstacles. Those same skills became the foundation for building a school.

Watching my children flourish in this setting was inspiring. But when they transitioned to public school for first grade, the contrast was striking.

Classrooms were structured around large reading groups and desks in rows. Hands-on materials were scarce. Worksheets dominated the day, and opportunities for independent exploration were limited.

It raised a question that would ultimately change the course of my life: Could we create something better?

In search of answers, we visited a Montessori elementary classroom on Amelia Island, about an hour north. The moment we walked in, we were mesmerized. Students worked independently on advanced mathematics, language studies, geography, and research projects. The classroom hummed with quiet concentration. Children were engaged, capable, and clearly proud of their work.

That visit planted the seed of an idea: perhaps we could create something like this in our own community—a school where curiosity is encouraged, creativity is nurtured, and children are empowered to discover knowledge for themselves.

A colleague and I drafted the incorporation documents for a nonprofit organization: Discovery Montessori School. Filing as a 501(c)(3) ensured that the school would not belong to any one individual but to the community it served—students, parents, teachers, and supporters.

The process required a certain amount of optimistic guesswork. One question asked how many students we expected to enroll by the third year. We looked at one another, discussed what seemed possible, and wrote down a number that reflected our hope as much as our projections.

Then came the challenge of finding teachers.

Montessori elementary education did not yet exist in Northeast Florida, but we found two dedicated women who believed in the vision. They agreed to attend Montessori teacher training and to begin teaching as interns that fall.

Our first classroom space was humble. We rented and renovated a small building behind a local Garden Club. Montessori materials were essential, so we purchased many from a school in New Orleans that was closing. We also created many ourselves. I purchased a two-foot-wide laminator and spent countless hours designing and laminating teaching materials. For years, that laminator was practically the centerpiece of my dining room table.

This remarkable growth has been made possible by the dedication of many people—parents, grandparents, teachers, staff members, board members, and friends who believed deeply in the vision and gave generously of their time, talent, and resources. Building by building and program by program, Discovery has grown into something far greater than we first imagined.

Funding the school required creativity and sacrifice.

We borrowed modest amounts from ourselves and our families and set tuition at $3,000 per student.

Meanwhile, I handled the endless administrative tasks—payroll, taxes, newsletters, report cards, and regulatory paperwork—without salary. Quite simply, there was no budget for another position.

What we did have, however, was commitment.

In the fall of 1990, The Discovery School opened its doors with just 11 students, two teachers, one unpaid administrator, and an extraordinary number of volunteer hours from dedicated families.

Looking back now, it seems remarkable that such a small beginning could lead to what Discovery has become today.

Three years later, the school hired its first full-time director, Betty Grissom. After she served for a decade and retired, I returned as Head of School to help guide Discovery through a pivotal period of growth. Later, I had the privilege of hiring the next long-term director, Kim Bednarek, a visionary leader who expanded and strengthened the program.

For me personally, one of the greatest joys is seeing the next generation experience the same environment of curiosity and discovery. My own grandsons now attend Discovery, continuing a family connection that began more than three decades ago.

What began as a simple idea—that children learn best when they are free to explore and discover—has grown into a lasting legacy for our community.

The Discovery School stands today as a testament to what can happen when thoughtful, committed people come together with a shared belief in the power of education.

And at the heart of it all—always—are the students: past, present, and future, whose lives are enriched by their Discovery experience and who will carry that spirit of curiosity into the world.

Today, The Discovery School, under its current leadership, has grown into a thriving educational community serving 350 students, from toddlers just 18 months old to middle school. This expansion represents decades of thoughtful stewardship and community support.

35 Year Anniversary Gala $425k Raised for Our School

The 90s showed up and showed out this spring at The Discovery School’s Glam Jam Gala. While the throwback gowns, scrunchies, and Doc Martens brought the rad vibes, the impact was firmly rooted in our future. In true Discovery fashion, this wasn’t just a party—it was purpose in motion. Together, our community raised an incredible $425,155 to support campus enhancements that will benefit our students for years to come.

From the moment guests arrived, the energy was da bomb. Alums, current families, faculty, and friends came together in a way that felt less like an event and more like a reunion—equal parts celebration and connection. That’s the spirit of The Discovery School: joyful, inclusive, and deeply committed to the growth of every child.

The “90’s Glam Jam” theme hit the sweet spot— playful, a little nostalgic, and totally reflective of a community that doesn’t take itself too seriously… until it comes to showing up for kids.

And show up you did. The evening’s focus— revitalizing our outdoor greenspace and playground—struck a chord. When the paddle raise began, the room shifted. What started as quiet anticipation quickly turned into a groundswell of generosity (cue the “U Can’t Touch This” energy). Paddle after paddle went up, and just like that, our community made it clear: what happens outside the classroom matters just as much as what happens within it.

At Discovery, learning transcends the classroom door.

It lives in the outdoors, atop the climbing structures, and within the unstructured moments where students cultivate creativity and collaboration. This new outdoor space serves as more than a playground—it extends our mission, providing a landscape where curiosity runs wild, and confidence grows.

Of course, no event this fly happens without some serious behind-the-scenes magic. Huge props to our Gala Committee—Christy Bremer, Mariah Ernst, and Megan Peters Okon—who absolutely nailed it. From concept to execution, they brought vision, heart, and next-level organization to every detail. Thanks to their leadership, the night was seamless, meaningful, and, frankly, pretty epic.

As we look ahead, the impact of this evening will be felt for decades. The new Outdoor Greenspace and playground will stand as a living legacy of our 35th year—a place where future Discovery students will run, build, imagine, and belong.

To everyone who made this night possible: we are beyond grateful. You showed up, you gave big, and you reminded us what makes this community so special.

So as we head into the final stretch of the school year, we’re riding high (no dial-up required). The Glam Jam Gala proved once again that when Discovery comes together, magic happens. Here’s to 35 more years of dreaming big!
