Wear it Pink day is a great opportunity to rally friends, family, colleagues and classmates together to raise money for Breast Cancer Now, an organisation whose research aims to detect breast cancer earlier, treat it efficiently, and work towards preventing the disease altogether. Since their first event in 2002, Breast Cancer Now has raised over £31.5 million, and on October 19th you can help contribute even more to their fantastic cause.

Meteorites land at Ditcham Park School Pupils from Ditcham Park School got their hands on rare samples of moon rocks and meteorites at an exciting and awe inspiring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Fair held at the school at the end of term.

These included a 1.2 billion-year-old piece of Mars rock and a 4.3 billion-year-old meteorite. The lunar samples were collected in the 1960s and 1970s during NASA’s first space missions.

The students were entertained by a fantastic rockets, fire and explosions show by ‘Wonderstruck’ and toured an exhibition hall full of top names in STEM businesses such as Google, Estee Lauder and Siemens.

Begin by gently simmering 2-litres of traditional cider on a low heat.

You could use apple cider, or even experiment with a pear flavour.

Leave the cider to warm all the way through for a few minutes.

Next, gradually add the sugar to the cider. Depending on how sweet you’d like to the drink to be, we recommend around 75 grams in total.

One thing that always signifies the beginning of winter to us is that first sip of something mulled. Whether we’re huddled around the fire with our slippers on and favourite mug in hand, or pottering around Christmas markets in our warmest coat with our hands clasped around a takeaway cup, there is something magical about a warm alcoholic drink. Now is the time to indulge in mulled drinks of all varieties, and especially this season’s must-have mulled drink which is cider!

Cut two large oranges in half, and squeeze the juice into the mix. TOP TIP: Save the skin of the oranges to use as a garnish – simply wrap the skin around a straw, hold in place for a few seconds, and you’ll have your own spiral decoration!

For the final festive touch, stir in two teaspoons of vanilla essence, a cinnamon stick, and some finely grated nutmeg.

Carefully pour the mix into heatproof mugs, add your orange garnish and a final sprinkling of nutmeg and there you have it, the taste of Christmas in a mug!

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, it’s time to heat up your pan and create a new winter dish filled with a warming fusion of sweet and spicy ingredients.

This ‘Sweet Potato Risotto’ is a healthier alternative to the classic risotto, with a delightful combination of sweet potatoes and peppers, and complimentary spices.

Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees. Peel 2-3 sweet potato spuds, and chop roughly.

Part boil the potato for around 10 minutes, and then take off the heat and drain. Dice the potatoes into bite-sized squares, and spread out onto a baking tray. Lightly cover with oil, and season with salt, pepper and paprika. Roast for 30 minutes, or until the potato begins to brown.

While the potato cooks, simmer vegetable stock over a low heat, and fry onions and diced red pepper in a little butter until the onion turns translucent and the peppers begin to soften. Add salt, pepper and paprika to the onion mix, and fry for another 2 minutes.

Take the pan off the heat, and leave to rest for 2 minutes. Dish the risotto into bowls, and sprinkle with goat’s cheese.

HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM ARE LOOKING FOR PLAYERS! Havant and Waterlooville FC’s 50+ Walking Football Team called The Many Shades of Grey are looking for players to join their fabulous team. The team evolved from modest beginnings and now into an awardwinning, thriving, and vibrant group of enthusiastic players.

The team are aware that by holding sessions during working hours, they are excluding a significant number of people who might otherwise have been able to join in. They are now looking to expand further and introduce more men to their team by organising additional training days. The Monday morning sessions, run

by Shaun Gale are from 11 am – 12:30 pm at Southdown’s College. Training sessions are

also held on Monday evenings from 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm at Warblington School run by Ross Betteridge. Shaun Gale will also run sessions every Thursday morning from 11 am – 12.30 pm at South Downs College.

Each session is followed by complimentary tea/coffee held at Westleigh Football Club.

Each session costs £3.00 per person, payable on the day. To fully integrate into The Many Shades of Grey team and to become an eligible player you will need to sign a registration form, for which there is a one-off £10.00 fee.

HERO PLASTERER AIMS TO SUPPORT FAMILIES WITH AUTISM Aaron Pearson, a plasterer from Denmead, has been nominated for the Jewson’s Building Better Communities Trade Hero 2018 award.

Aaron states: “I am very passionate about helping children and their families with Autism.

My son Rico, who is 10 is also Autistic, which has inspired me to become a volunteer at ‘Charity Autism Isolation No More’.

The former mayor of Havant, Elaine Shimbary, presented the second and final cheque to her charity of choice, FitzRoy. The charity, located at 254 London Road, Waterlooville, aim to transform the lives of people with learning disabilities.

Councillor Shimbart, who represents Hart Plain states: “The charity was delighted with the amount donated to them. They already have ideas about how the money will be spent which is fantastic!”

Maria Atkins, a support worker at Fitzroy Waterlooville, also states: “The donation will make such a big difference to the people using the service.

From volunteering for the charity ‘Autism Isolation No More’, Aaron has created some incredible sensory spaces for those in need.

Aaron has been involved in creating their first inclusion centre. Located in a shopping centre, there was a lot of work to be done as the shop had been derelict for close to a decade! He has now turned the Fareham store into a fullyfunctioning sensory space for children with Autism.

Rachael Pearson, who also supports the charity, states: “I’ve known about autism my whole life because my younger brother is autistic, and I watched my mother deteriorate before my eyes because of the lack of support that was out there. It has affected us badly, and I don’t want any other families to have to go through the same thing”.
