Using children’s interests we promote active learning through a wide range of activities and encourage children to develop at their own pace and within their capabilities. The Montessori method capitalises on a child’s natural instincts and, through specific exercises using the five senses, children learn a respect for their environment as well as skills which will prepare them for school and beyond!

This year marks 50 years since the Weald & Downland Living Museum first opened its doors and it is celebrating with an exciting series of events.

The Weald & Downland Living Museum opened in 1970 and was founded by Dr J.R Armstrong MBE. The aim of the Museum is to preserve historical buildings and increase the awareness of traditional crafts, trades and industries. Set in the peaceful surroundings of the South Downs National Park in Chichester, the Museum is home to over 50 historic buildings, from as early as 950AD! Across the 40-acre site, the Museum shows extraordinary examples of early architecture, materials used in construction and tells the stories of those who lived and worked in rural South East England over 1,000 years ago.

There are various events planned to celebrate the Museum’s 50th anniversary year, including a special celebration on the 5th September, the date the Museum officially opened to the public 50 years ago. Guests are invited to celebrate at a 1970s inspired birthday picnic where they will be provided with a special Weald & Downland hamper and will be encouraged to dress up in costume from that era. This is an exclusive ticketed, evening event - to book please visit the Museum’s website.

The Museum is home to over 50 historic buildings, from as early as 950AD! As well as the picnic, throughout the weekend (5-6th September), there will be a series of demonstrations, speakers and displays as part of a special Historic Life Weekend to coincide with the anniversary, showcasing all that is great about the Museum and the traditional crafts, skills and architecture it works so hard to preserve.

Providing an interactive insight into our rural history, the Museum offers a wonderful day out for visitors of all ages. From exploring the historic buildings as well as the six historic gardens to seeing traditional agricultural work, management of the woodland and historic life demonstrations.

For that holiday feeling...

To give apprehensive Britons a slice of that foreign holiday feeling without leaving the UK, Love Home Swap has launched holidays to British places that have foreign names – including California (in Great Yarmouth), Bermuda (in Warwickshire) and New York (in Lincolnshire), as well as several other UK towns and villages that share their name with foreign destinations.

Love Home Swap has launched these unique holidays to give nervous Britons the opportunity of a memorable vacation as well as the chance to say they’re going somewhere exotic, but without ever actually leaving the UK.

We’re welcoming family visits in our lovely garden After almost four months in lockdown, the teams at Hayling Island’s Gorseway Manor Care Home and Gorseway Nursing Home are grateful to start returning a level of normality to daily life for their residents.

Staff who had been self-isolating have now returned to work, meaning there’s a strong and stable care team at both homes.

There’s a weekly testing regime for staff, and residents are tested monthly, or if they show COVID-19 symptoms.

The teams have really pulled together to support and care for their residents during the coronavirus outbreak, while adhering to strict hygiene and PPE protocols.

They have found new ways for residents to keep in touch with families, friends and the outside world. Residents who had never used a mobile phone before have embraced making WhatsApp and video calls, with the support of the care team.

During lockdown the stunning fishpond, sensory garden and lawned gardens on the Gorseway site have given staff and residents plenty of space to get outside.

Having such a beautiful garden means that the homes can now welcome pre-booked family visits outside, albeit at a safe distance of at least 2m, and with a few stipulations to minimise the risk.

Two Lifeboat crew members dreamt up an idea to create knitted lifeboat crew dolls to sustain morale and were supported by several ladies from the 3 Anglican Churches Jenny Gaffin and Janet Denman were planning a photographic exhibition in aid of the RNLI and were at St Andrews Church when they came up with the idea of a knitted doll resembling an RNLI lifeboat crew member.

Having found a suitable pattern online Jenny approached some of her parishioners and they enthusiastically broke their ‘lockdown boredom’ by busily knitting. Meanwhile Janet and Jenny got thinking creatively and Janet customised the first doll as a likeness of one of the crew and created a scene to put ‘him’ in. (see picture of crewmember demonstrating rope handling!)

The scenarios were also shared with the lady knitters helping them to cope with the isolation of Covid-19 lockdown. Janet who was shielding during the crisis, created the scenes at home or in her garden. For Jenny it bridged her two worlds, the lifeboat station and the churches and she said ‘It’s been somewhat surreal but it was something we could do to raise a laugh and bring people together and it’s shown the richness of community spirit on Hayling.’

During this special month, The Urology Foundation (TUF) aims to get the nation talking about prevention, treatment and management of issues that affect the kidney, urinary tract and male reproductive system, such as cancer, infertility, incontinence and erectile dysfunction. TUF is also asking people to raise money to fund vital research into the disease.

Urological conditions will affect 1 in 2 people during their lifetime, yet they remain shrouded in secrecy and silence.

Incontinence can impact an individual’s quality of life and the NHS estimates that up to 6 million people suffer from urinary incontinence so if you’re one of them, you’re not alone and you’re certainly not powerless to solve the problem – it’s time to take control of your bladder!

We know that exercise if great for our physical and mental health, but it can also improve symptoms when you choose

activities that don’t exert great pressure on your abdominals, like swimming, walking, cycling and Pilates. Consultant Urological Surgeon at Chichester Nuffield Hospital, Dan Magrill, knows how important it is to feel comfortable when you exercise and has some tips on how to take control of your bladder with an active lifestyle such as: • Making sure you empty your bladder before you set out on a run, cycle or swim • Factor in toilet stops on your routes • Avoid caffeine or alcohol before you exercise (as they can irritate the bladder) The Urology Foundation (TUF) believes the taboo and negative attitudes surrounding urology must end.

Consultant urologist, Barnaby Chappell explains the importance of especially spreading awareness amongst men, not only to spot symptoms or to see their GP, but to talk about it openly. The Urology Foundation urges all men and women suffering from urological conditions or symptoms to see their GP so they can access the necessary care and treatment and regain their quality of life.
