Wear it Pink day is a great opportunity to rally friends, family, colleagues and classmates together to raise money for Breast Cancer Now, an organisation whose research aims to detect breast cancer earlier, treat it efficiently, and work towards preventing the disease altogether. Since their first event in 2002, Breast Cancer Now has raised over £31.5 million, and on October 19th you can help contribute even more to their fantastic cause.

Meteorites land at Ditcham Park School Pupils from Ditcham Park School got their hands on rare samples of moon rocks and meteorites at an exciting and awe inspiring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Fair held at the school at the end of term.

These included a 1.2 billion-year-old piece of Mars rock and a 4.3 billion-year-old meteorite. The lunar samples were collected in the 1960s and 1970s during NASA’s first space missions.

The students were entertained by a fantastic rockets, fire and explosions show by ‘Wonderstruck’ and toured an exhibition hall full of top names in STEM businesses such as Google, Estee Lauder and Siemens.

Whether we’re huddled around the fire with our slippers on and favourite mug in hand, or pottering around Christmas markets in our warmest coat with our hands clasped around a takeaway cup, there is something magical about a warm alcoholic drink. Now is the time to indulge in mulled drinks of all varieties, and especially this season’s must-have mulled drink which is cider!

Cut two large oranges in half, and squeeze the juice into the mix. TOP TIP: Save the skin of the oranges to use as a garnish – simply wrap the skin around a straw, hold in place for a few seconds, and you’ll have your own spiral decoration!

For the final festive touch, stir in two teaspoons of vanilla essence, a cinnamon stick, and some finely grated nutmeg.

Carefully pour the mix into heatproof mugs, add your orange garnish and a final sprinkling of nutmeg and there you have it, the taste of Christmas in a mug!

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, it’s time to heat up your pan and create a new winter dish filled with a warming fusion of sweet and spicy ingredients.

This ‘Sweet Potato Risotto’ is a healthier alternative to the classic risotto, with a delightful combination of sweet potatoes and peppers, and complimentary spices.

Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees. Peel 2-3 sweet potato spuds, and chop roughly.

Part boil the potato for around 10 minutes, and then take off the heat and drain. Dice the potatoes into bite-sized squares, and spread out onto a baking tray. Lightly cover with oil, and season with salt, pepper and paprika. Roast for 30 minutes, or until the potato begins to brown.

While the potato cooks, simmer vegetable stock over a low heat, and fry onions and diced red pepper in a little butter until the onion turns translucent and the peppers begin to soften. Add salt, pepper and paprika to the onion mix, and fry for another 2 minutes.

Take the pan off the heat, and leave to rest for 2 minutes. Dish the risotto into bowls, and sprinkle with goat’s cheese.

LET’S ALL UNITE TOGETHER IN PETERSFIELD, TO RAISE MONEY FOR MACMILLAN of her.” Therefore, her family and friends are all uniting together to take part in the head shave to raise awareness and additional money for Macmillan.

Karen will be joined by Sarah’s dad, Chris Gaylard, Samantha Jacobs, Sarah’s Sister, Matthew Gaylard and Chris Gaylard Jnr who are Sarah’s Brothers and last of all, Wendy Shone who is a friend of theirs.

Unfortunately, most of us have been in the sad and tragic position of having lost someone, or are aware of someone who is currently struggling with cancer. But together, we can all help to raise money for Macmillan who help to people with cancer and their families.

Karen White is currently organising an event to raise money for the ‘Brave the Shave’ campaign for Macmillan, supported by The Five Bells in Buriton. The event has been organised, in memory of her cousin, Sarah Haywood (nee Gaylard), from Buriton, who lost her battle to cancer at 47, in 2017.

Karen states: “Sarah and I were close, we did everything together, especially when we were children, and I wanted to do something in memory

The event will include a bar, music, food raffle and lots of laughter which will take place on the 10th of November at Buriton Village Hall, Petersfield, GU31 5RX. Doors will open at 6pm, and the shave will take place at 7 pm.

You can support by donating or sponsoring the event! Whether you prefer to donate raffle prizes, donate money, or even contribute to paying for entertainment purposes. They welcome any contribution big or small!

You can give your donations to The Five Bells in Buriton! Alternatively, you can also donate on the night of the event. Together we can all make a difference and we hope to see you all there. The confirmed shavers are (see next page):

PETERSFIELD COUPLE CELEBRATE 70TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY The couple James, 94 and Deirdre 91 have been married longer than the Queen and Prince Phillip!

The pair tied the knot at Burwash Common, East Sussex, in 1948 a year after meeting at a dance!

When it comes to maintaining a long marriage, James has four words of advice;

‘always say, yes, dear’.

He continues: “It’s not always been easy, especially as I used to work as a submariner. We rarely stayed in the same place for long, which could be difficult at times”.

After living in Soberton, Havant, Scotland and Norway the pair have eventually settled down in Petersfield with three children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

To celebrate the couple’s platinum wedding anniversary, the family organised a party which included several old friends. On the day of the anniversary, they visited Chichester Festival Theatre to see ‘Me and My Girl’ which Deirdre last saw with her parents when she was ten.

The couple has recently planned a cruise to the Caribbean in a yacht, which they are looking forward to!
