Autumn Sleep Tips As Autumn draws closer, we see the end of long, light nights and hot, stuffy bedrooms.

But although one set of sleep challenges are on their way out, the change to cooler weather may be the start of a new set. Here’s The Sleep Council’s advice to make sure Autumn doesn’t leave you fatigued and frustrated: Shorter days can mean less exposure to sunlight. This means lower levels of vitamin D, increased feelings of fatigue and disruption of the sleep/ wake cycle. Make sure to get plenty of sun on your face by opening the curtains as soon as you wake up and going for a morning walk.

While the crisp, chilly air can make it tempting to light the fire and crank up the heating, it’s actually best to keep the bedroom between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. This is because the body struggles to bring its temperature back down when you get too hot, causing sleep disruption.

Or if it’s too cold, the body will eventually wake you up – demanding extra layers of warmth and insulation!

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that alters melatonin levels, which play a role in the sleep/wake cycle and cause daytime sleepiness and

oversleeping. It is thought to affect one in 15 people between September and April in the UK each year. To re-establish a normal sleep schedule, exercise regularly, limit the use of gadgets before bed and keep bedtime/waking times consistent – even at weekends. Getting as much natural daylight as possible is also key, as it suppresses melatonin levels and boosts serotonin production!

While it’s easy to stick to salads and lighter foods during warm Summer months, try to avoid the temptation to ‘comfort eat’ heavier meals as the temperatures drop – particularly close to bedtime. Too much food, too close to bedtime could cause you to wake-up from heartburn and indigestion.

Also, decide whether your bed is still comfortable and supportive. If your bed is seven years old or more, then a new one could definitely be on the cards.

CYCLISTS GEARED UP FOR CHARITY BIKE RIDE IN PETERSFIELD

CREATIVITY WEEK AT DITCHAM PARK SCHOOL As part of a Creativity Week at Ditcham Park School over 200 students worked with talented professional artists in a range of disciplines from drama, dance, clothes design, rock school, willow sculpture, creative writing, model making, and graffiti art.

These three days of immersive creative activity were designed to encourage our pupils to develop and value their creative skills. During the week, one group of students designed and made a space balloon to carry cameras and a special Lego spaceman from our Dragonflies Nursery to heady heights.

Once Air Traffic Control had given clearance the balloon was launched with all the school taking time out from workshops and lessons to witness this exciting event.

Later on that day our Head of Science drove to a field in West Firle, near Lewes, to retrieve the balloon and equipment after it had reached a height of 35,000m into space!

The photo taken by the camera at this height is quite stunning and was liked by the astronaut Tim Peake on Ditcham’s social media report.

HUNDREDS of cyclists took to the lanes around Petersfield in August in a fundraising tour de force.

Cyclists of all ages and abilities competed in the Petersfield Ups and Downs (PUAD) ride, which was fundraising funds for local charities.

“Funds from this year’s bike ride was split between Saving Lives Together and FitzRoy.” The Petersfield Ups and Downs ride has five different routes for entrants to choose from, from a five-mile family route to a gruelling 50-mile trek, there is also a 20 and 30-mile option and a 20-mile off-road challenge, with every route available starting and finishing in The Square.

Tom North, PUAD chairman, states; “We wanted to keep it local and accessible for everyone so we’ve not changed the rides, but we have done a bit of smartening up - we redesigned the medals and everyone got a funky sports bottle.”
