Hampshire Guide Dogs’ Local charity Guide Dogs launches Virtual Bucket collection to raise vital funds The charity Guide Dogs, and their local fundraising group based in Havant and Hayling Island, are calling for the support of the general public to ensure they can continue to provide life-changing services to people with sight loss. It is estimated that 3,300 people are living in just Havant alone with some form of sight loss (mild to severe) this is expected to be over 3,700 by 2025 and over 4,000 by 2030, with many more across Hampshire. There are currently 11 individuals with a guide dog or on the waiting list in the Havant area and 19 people within the Portsmouth area.

Just like many other charities, the Covid-19 restrictions have meant that Guide Dogs is changing some of the ways it fundraises. But what hasn’t changed is how critical funds generated by local communities are to Guide Dogs’ life-changing services for people with sight loss!

And now intrepid local volunteers are hoping to continue raising these vital funds with the support of the Havant and Hayling Island community and surrounding areas, through online virtual collections. Every pound raised through these virtual collections ensures Guide Dogs can continue to help people with sight loss feel less alone, now and in the future. Guide Dogs currently has over 5,000 working guide dogs and it costs around £60,000 to breed, train and support each guide dog from birth to retirement.

1 tbsp olive oil 120g sliced cabbage 120g diced leek 2 fresh rosemary sprigs, leaves stripped 320g butternut squash, peeled and diced 2 tbsp plain flour 300ml vegetable stock 1 dollop of crème fraiche 75g blue cheese 375g puff pastry sheets Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan180°C/ gas 6. To start, heat the oil in a pan, then add the cabbage and leeks with half the rosemary. Cook over a medium heat for 5-8 minutes then add the squash and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Add the flour, stir well, then slowly pour in the stock a splash at a time whilst stirring.

Cover and simmer for 10 minutes until the squash is tender.

Remove from the heat, stir through the crème fraiche and cool for around 10 minutes.

Whilst cooling, unroll the pastry and cut against the 2 x 300ml dishes. Stir the cheese and remaining rosemary through the squash mix, season, then divide between the two dishes. Lay the pastry on top of each dish, brush with a drop of olive oil and make a small hole in the centre. Cook for 15 minutes until puffed, golden and bubbling. Remember to cool for a few moments before you dig in!

Easy Autumn s Jar Light

It’s officially October so naturally, we’re thinking about Autumn leaves, pumpkin soup and Halloween. This fun craft is great for people of all ages to make – and looks gorgeous outside the house when darkness hits!

Firstly (if you don’t already), collect a few empty jam, chutney or any other glass jars, wash and dry them. Next, source some red, orange, yellow and black acrylic paint, 2 paintbrushes and a black marker pen – these are sold as most supermarkets or online shops such as Amazon!

Grab a jar and use the marker pen to draw the outline of your design such as pumpkin, witches’ hat or any other spooky character.

Alternatively, if you want to go for a less creepy feel, you can draw a leaf, apple or any other Autumn object.

Next, paint the whole outside of a jar in either red, orange or yellow (using just one coat so you can still see the marker pen). Let that dry then fill your marker outline in with a few coats of black paint. Once it’s all dry and when it starts to get dark outside, pop a tea

Drawing on more than a decade of experience in the motor trade, Matt Bartlett launched Auto Matt at Rake Industries near Petersfield in March last year.

Matt started at a local car sales garage, helping in their workshop, before studying NVQ 1,2,3 motor vehicle mechanics at Chichester College. During his time at local Citroen and Peugeot dealers, Matt gained an insight into the latest new car technologies.

Now, he aims to apply this experience and understanding of the industry to his own garage, offering a fresh approach to auto repair.

Matt explained: “The inspiration for starting Auto Matt was to give people a place to take their car that focused on them and not their wallet.

“Customer service is paramount and people like to be looked after. In the motor trade, it’s a known fact that women can be made to feel uneasy and treated wrong or a customer who doesn’t know a lot about cars can often have the wool pulled over their eyes – whereas Auto Matt is here to help everybody.”

Estimates are free and all work is guaranteed and tested before the car is returned to the customer.

Auto Matt will never carry out repairs without the customer’s approval and will not add anything to the cost without first informing the customer.

Current offers include a free winter check and free levels check (oil, screen wash, coolant will need to be paid for), and an air conditioning service to help keep your windscreen clear in the winter months for £39.95.
