Joe forms a part of the GB Cycling Team and was awarded his medal in the Track Sprint. He used to work for The Directory Group as one of our distributors. This month, we are excited to celebrate the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who will tie the knot at Windsor Castle on the 19th May. Many of us have been following the love story through the media. Have an excellent day cheering on the newlyweds. The Royal Wedding is on the same day as the FA Cup Final so it’s a big day for those of you who love royalty and sport! Let’s not forget the birth of our new Prince, who is the third child and second son to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. There’s currently a lot of excitement within the Royal Family – it’s great. Within this edition we have a brilliant competition for you to win a family ticket to The Nostalgia Show, at the grounds of the gorgeous Stansted Park, Rowlands Castle, on 30th June to 1st July 2018. They are giving away two family tickets for a fabulous weekend of entertainment. TO STRESS MEN DO NOT NEED TO FACE DEPRESSION ALONE Stress is something many men are affected by at some point in their life. By not controlling stress, mental health issues such as depression can arise. This month we highlight the issue depression, caused by stress, can have on men and how we can play a part in supporting. Typically, men are more vulnerable to the effects of stress as they may perceive depression as a weakness. Even though we are living in a society in which there has been so much change towards the gender perceptions of both male and female, emotion among many men continues to be regarded as instability. This is especially the case in developing countries where traditional gender roles are more strongly endorsed. In fact, while more women have suicidal thoughts, a greater number of men die by taking their own lives. Why? Many men are guilty for not truly expressing their emotion. They are known not to speak with each other about how they are feeling. Men may identify they are stressed but fail to address the problem.
The charity suggests men are twice as likely as women to have nobody to rely on for emotional support. This is the average to around one in ten men. But there are plenty of methods to gain support. Speaking to someone whom you trust can hugely help with addressing a concern with your mental health. Many specialists believe there is healing when telling people about what you are experiencing. Identifying what may be the route cause of your depression is also important; once you know why you feel the way you do, you can address the problem for the better. If you’re still feeling down or depressed after a couple of weeks, talk to your GP or call 111. We need to support every man who may be facing a mental health problem. If you believe you are experiencing a mental health problem, advice can be found at www.mind.org.uk. Information on dealing with depression can be found at www.nhs.uk.

The Rosemary Foundation was delighted to be chosen by the Solent Renegades car club as their charity for 2018. The club held its first show of the year on Sunday, 15th April at the Farmhouse Pub in Portsmouth, raising £420 for the foundation from a raffle and collection buckets.

Club member Dan Potter said: “Each year we select a different local charity we hope we can make a small difference to. We chose The Rosemary Foundation because of their vital work in the local community and they deserve all the support we can give them.” The Solent Renegades is a group of classic American car enthusiasts. Their next show is at the same venue on Sunday, 21st October 2018. They also support the Hot Rod and Custom Show at Beaulieu on Fathers’ Day and run their famous ‘Southsea Cruise’, on the 3rd Sunday of each summer month, driving up to 50 classic vehicles through old Portsmouth. The Rosemary Foundation relies solely on public donations to run its “hospice at home” service for patients in the latter stage of life-limiting conditions.

DEPRESSION WON’T STOP FATHER AND SONS RAISING THOUSANDS FOR CHARITY A father who has suffered from depression will skydive to raise money for a mental health charity next month. Darren Peters, from Petersfield, has committed to do a tandem parachute skydive on 3rd June with his two sons, Harrison and Liam. The trio aim to raise at least £5,000 for Mind, an organisation which supports individuals with mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. Mind’s work has meant millions more people have access to advice and support thanks to the information and services they provide nationally and locally. On Darren’s Crowdfunding Page, he said: “I suffered a bout of depression recently, and with the help of my Doctor and that, coupled with some medication, it has completely changed me for the better. “I never realised how many people suffered with depression. I know it has a bit of a stigma attached to it, but trust me, it is very real.” The jump has been a desire of Darren’s for years. The three fundraisers will plunge 15’000ft and have already been encouraged by many generous donations. Darren added: “We are hoping to raise £7,000. This will cover the cost of the parachute jump, the Just Giving fees, and to give the charity Mind at least £5,000. Your money will make a huge difference and potentially save lives.” Mind currently offer their services in England and Wales. Darren’s wife Yvonne is organising a quiz night at the Petersfield
Social Club on 18th May to raise money for the charity. Teams of up to 6 people may enter costing £10 per person. Doors open at 7pm with the quiz starting at 8.30pm. CARPET SPECIALIST RETIRES AFTER 50 YEARS OF SERVICE
QUILT OF DREAMS A quilt which depicts the dreams of many young people has been created in aid of charity. Children from Churcher’s Junior School and The King’s Arms drew their individual aspiration onto a square which was then stitched together forming ‘A Quilt of Dreams’.
An impressive 50 years of service has come to an end for John Hogg - who retired from Waterlooville Carpets last month. The carpet specialist joined the company in February 1968, just three months after the business was established in November of the previous year. John began his career in the marines, before becoming a postman, then working at a holiday camp and ultimately settling at the company, now based at Petersfield. It was an emotional farewell for John as colleagues and previous clients took him for lunch and expressed their thanks with gifts and cards.
The impressive artwork was displayed in the window at Sew Creative, on Lavant Street, Petersfield. Sharing on Facebook, The Kings Arms said: “Thank you to Churcher’s Junior School for involving the young carers in this project - very proud of our kids’ contribution and thank you to all at Sew Creative for this opportunity.” A collection pot may be found inside Sew Creative to raise money for the charity, who offer various clubs and events for local young people. www.thekingsarms. org.uk
John said: “I started off as an apprentice with a fitter. Shortly after beginning he became unwell so before I knew it I was completing jobs on my own. I wasn’t driving at the time so had a colleague take me to and from places. When I learned to drive and fitted carpets on my own I loved meeting people, having a coffee and chat, and seeing their appreciation at the end of it all.” John’s ability to communicate effectively with clients did not go unnoticed. He was invited by Mike de Mellow to work in the showroom to focus on building relationship with clients while supporting them with selecting their most favourable and practical design. He said: “The trick to having a long and happy career is to enjoy what you do. Thank you to everyone who have made my time with the company an enjoyable experience.”
