Blackadder Goes Forth “A WAR HASN’T BEEN FOUGHT THIS BADLY SINCE OLAF THE HAIRY, HIGH CHIEF OF ALL THE VIKINGS, ACCIDENTALLY ORDERED EIGHTY THOUSAND BATTLE HELMETS WITH THE HORNS ON THE INSIDE.”

Black Adder Goes Forth Hilarious military comedy witH a bittersweet ending.

1917 on the Western Front in the trenches of World War I. We join Captain Edmund Blackadder, Lt. George, Pte. Baldrick with the full support of Capt. Darling and General Melchett in the trenches with another “big push” planned and in the offing. Join TFT to commemorate the centenary with this bittersweet tribute of

the First World War. All six episodes have been adapted for the stage in a fresh staging of the classic comedy set in the trenches of the Somme. Packed with the best of Baldrick’s cooking, dead pigeons, Lord Flashheart’s heroics, and Blackadder’s most cunning plans.

CHANGING THE

STATUS QUO

TO GET MEN TALKING THIS MOVEMBER

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED: GROW YOUR MO

Across the country and the world, thousands of men will grow their moustache in solidarity and support of the charity, all while starting a conversation and raising crucial funds for the foundation. You can sign up to Movember here uk.movember.com and start collecting sponsorship throughout the month.

HOST A MO-MENT

Movember is all about coming together to support each other and talk more openly about our health, so what better than to host an event in aid of the Movember Foundation? Host a community bake sale (you can even add fun moustache toppers to you cakes!), get your colleagues and classmates involved and have everyone donate in exchange for a communal lunch or social outing, or have a moustache leader board throughout the month, and have everyone donate a small amount to vote for the best moustache in the office.

It’s time to take action against the health issues men are facing this November, whether you’re hosting an fundraiser, taking part in a sponsored sporting event, or of course growing a moustache! November is a month dedicated to spreading awareness for men’s illness. Globally, men are facing a health crisis that isn’t being discussed, from prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention… men are not talking about their health issues enough. The Movember Foundation was set up in 2004 to encourage men to be more forthcoming about illness, and they are now the leading charity in changing the face of men’s health. Over the last 15 years, the Movember Foundation have funded over 1200 men’s health projects, and by 2030 they will reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.

GET YOUR LEGS MOVING

If you don’t fancy growing your facial hair, you can also get involved by running or walking 60 kilometres this month for the 60 men who are lost to suicide each day. Show your support by joining a running club, getting together with friends, or going solo. Not only will it benefit you, but the money raised will go towards supporting men’s health.

Remembrance Day: The 100th anniversary The legacy of The First World War on Remembrance Sunday a century later The 11th of November is a significant day of history across the UK and the world. A century ago on this day was the end of The First World War, and each year in the lead-up to this event we buy and wear poppies as a sign of respect and support for The British Army, The Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The first World War saw 65 million men from 30 countries fight, 750,000 of these are thought to be British, and over 188,000 were from British colonies. Initially, the British Government asked for 100,000 volunteers to join the army, and almost eight times this number applied, with over 250,000 lying about their age to get selected. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Portsmouth Guildhall Remembrance Service

WW1 brought millions of deaths, and hundreds of thousands of injuries… but it also allowed for advancements in medicine, technology, and language. Many of the medical interventions and pioneering techniques have hugely influenced the medical procedures we use today, and The First World War was also the first time an aircraft was used in battle. As for advancements in how we speak, ‘trench language’ gave us many of the modern slang words we use today such as ‘lousy’ and ‘crummy’. Just like the symbol of the poppy growing from a baron field signifies hope, the progression in medicine, technology and language likewise brings a sense of pride following the war. The 11th November serendipitously falls on a Sunday this year, and there will be plenty of parades and events near you, so make sure to check the What’s On section in the directory. You can find out more about Remembrance Day and on-going events via www.britishlegion.org.uk.

Bring the outdoors in this winter with our step-by-step guide to creating a gorgeous homemade seasonal wreath. This wreath is perfect as a winter wreath, or can be transformed into a festive wreath with the addition of Christmas decorations.

1. Create the base

First, you need a wreath base - choose from a wire ring or a fresh spruce wreath. You can make your own ring from thick wire or a metal coat hanger by bending it into a circle, or you might prefer to buy the base from a garden centre. Then get some natural twine to bind everything to your base - it holds much longer than glue.

2. Pick the theme

Decide how you will decorate your wreath. For a traditional look, use lots of lush, red colours with fake sprays of poinsettia, roses or berries, and some red ribbon. For a more modern look, go for sparkly baubles and glittery lights. Or create a garden-themed wreath with a variety of berries and cones.

3. Attach the stems

To build your wreath, start by securing flower or foliage stems to the base using lightweight floral wire. Overlap the stems as you go to avoid gaps. Keep adding stems until the wreath base is fully covered.

Make Your Own

Winter Wreath

4. Wrap the twine

Wrap some twine around the stems and tie, cutting away any extra string if you need to.

5. Add festive decorations (optional) Your wreath should be starting to take shape, so now you can add your decorations. These can be attached using twine. Add loops to baubles and other personal touches, then tie them on to your wreath.

6. Wrap up the wreath

By now your wreath should be looking wonderfully Wintery and this step is really just for you to trim any loose bits and make it look fantastic. You can tie pieces of ribbon to the wreath to add some extra texture or, if you want to stick with a garden theme, add some raffia.

CYCLING DUO RAISE OVER £40,000 FOR HAMPSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE On the 26th August 2013, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Critical Care Team was called to a cycling accident in Owslebury, near Winchester.

from Caen to Cannes in eight days. The duo set themselves the ambitious target of raising £40,000, to be split equally between HIOWAA and MND.

Tim Daniels had been out on a bike ride with friends when he hit a telegraph pole, head-on, at 30mph. Without the response of the HIOWAA, it could have been a very different outcome.

They set off across the channel on Saturday 18th August and eight gruelling days later, they had completed the cycle challenge; five years to the day since Tim’s accident and with £20,000 raised for both charities.

As his way of saying ‘thank you’, Tim and his friend joined forces to take on the epic challenge of cycling 700 miles

Not wanting to stop there, and eager to reach their ambitious target, the group also arranged a Charity Ball and auction, which took place on Saturday 15th September at the Holiday Inn, Winchester. The evening raised over £20,000, but not content with finishing his fundraising just yet, Tim will be hosting a lunch, in support of HIOWAA, at Winchester Rugby Club in January, prior to one of the 1st XV home games.

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING IN SWANMORE

POPULAR MEON VALLEY PUB RE-OPENS IN SHEDFIELD The Old Forge Inn in Shedfield has now re-opened following a refurbishment which took 12-months. The popular Meon Valley pub has been taken over by Kemol Aksoy who has spent all his free time renovating his new business, which has been his life-long dream.

Friday 28th September was The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which is part of Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event. People all over Hampshire hosted their own Coffee Mornings, including Smallpiece Catering based in Swanmore, Meon Valley. They held a very successful coffee morning at Hill place on Friday 28th September, raising £200 towards cancer research. There were lots of fantastic cakes, and a ‘guess the size of the veggie roll’ which people donated to take part in. Coffee mornings are a great way to rally friends and family together, as well as at your workplace or school. Last year Macmillan raised £27 million, and hope to top that fantastic amount again this year.

WWW.

Kemol previously ran a kebab van in Hilsea for twenty years, but always hoped to have his own venue one day. Kemol is originally from Turkey, and his heritage inspired much of the décor in the renovated pub. Locals have already commented on how incredible and appealing the venue now looks. The pub will be offering 3 meat carveries - beef, gammon and turkey - 7 days a week. The Old Forge Inn is open every day from 11.30am – 11pm. Find the pub at The Old Forge Inn, Winchester Road, SO32 2HS.

“So come with me where dreamS are born and time iS never planned, juSt think of happy thingS and your heart will fly on wingS forever, in never never land”. J.M Barrie

n a P Peter

All children, except one, grow up…

Peter Pan or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. Written by J.M Barrie in 1904, this is the original story of the infamous Peter Pan and the adventures he has in Neverland. Peter would fly to London every night to listen to the bedtime stories that Mrs Darling told to her children. One night when Mr and Mrs Darling were out at a party, Peter snuck into the Darling Children’s nursery to steal

back his shadow, which he had lost on a previous night. Wendy, the eldest of the Darling children was awoken by Peter. He charms her instantly and persuades her to travel with him to Neverland so that she may tell stories to the lost boys who live there. Wendy and her brothers, John and Michael, fly to Neverland and this is where their adventure with Peter really begins.
