Both lifeboats attended the event along with hundreds of supporters and friends, all out to have a good time. Prior to the start the rafts and crew were judged to choose the best dressed raft.

At the start most rafts got away well but the group of ex-Army guys, dressed in fishtail skirts and bikini tops found their raft was very unstable and so the ‘mermaids’ had an early swim! The early leaders were the Hook Family (pictured) who never looked back and they were the overall winner. Mustang came in second featuring a team from the Hayling Joggers and the two RNLI chickens were third.

There are plenty of beautiful walking trails to visit within Hampshire.

St Catherine’s Hill This walk starts from Garnier Road Winchester, SO23 9PA. You will have chance to explore Winchester itself, a historic bustling cathedral city, before the walk passes through the tranquil water meadows and along the River Itchen. The route then climbs St Catherine’s Hill, the site of an ancient hill fort which provides stunning views across the city, before descending and continuing along another stretch of the river and back to the city. Holly Bank Woods Hollybank Woods is just North of Emsworth at the end of Holly Bank Lane, PO10 7EU. The woods are managed day to day by the Friends of Hollybank Woods for conservation and forestry on behalf of Havant Borough Council. The area comprises 157 acres of mostly mature broadleaved woodland, with a younger conifer forestry plantation and groups of conifer stands. Feel free to wonder on different trails in the woods, who knows what you might come across!

Beaulieu Food Trail Explore the beautiful Hampshire village of Beaulieu, before following the Beaulieu River south to the shipbuilding village of Bucklers Hard. The Trail starts from Palace Lane, Brockenhurst, SO427YG and is 2.2 miles each way. But, your day out can be as long or short as you like. Brockenhurst to Lyndhurst This 6.5-mile walk starts at Hollands Wood in Brockenhurst, SO42 7QH, winding through wildlife-rich forests to Beechen Lane in Lyndhurst. Look out for deer and ponies as you make your way north towards the ‘capital’ of the New Forest.

Hayling Billy Trail The Hayling Billy Coastal Path is a track used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders along the bed of an old railway line between Havant and Hayling Island. The Hayling Billy Trail starts in the car park of Havant train station.

Follow the clearly marked cycle path to New Lane and through the crossing gates. You may of course join the trail at numerous points along the way. NEW LOCATION PROVES A HIT FOR THIRD OLDER PERSONS FAIR thanked all the residents and exhibitors for supporting the event.

The new central Havant location proved a hit for Alan Mak’s third Community Groups and Older Persons Fair, with the expanded event seeing a record attendance. More than one thousand residents came to the Meridian Centre and the Beacon, with around 60 exhibitors displaying information about local groups and organisations that support senior citizens.

A number of residents also took the opportunity to become Dementia Friends, with sessions run by Dementia Friendly Hayling Island. Havant MP Alan Mak described it as a “superb day” and

He said: “I was delighted once again by the brilliant turnout, and for all of the support from residents who came to find out more about the excellent services on offer in the community. I’m committed to offering support for senior citizens and I hope that lots of people were able to join new clubs or learn about some of the services that are available.” He continues: “This is a popular fair that is now firmly becoming a popular annual event, and I’m already looking forward to bringing it back next year.”

The exhibitors at the event included everything from community groups such as the Bedhampton Community Centre, Hayling Choir and Havant Borough.

including Age UK, Diabetes UK and the Alzheimers Society.Carolyn Popham from Dementia Friendly Hayling said: “We were delighted to be at Alan’s Community Groups and Older Persons Information Fair. It is great to have the opportunity to create new Dementia Friends in Havant.”

RNLI LIFEBOAT CREWS AND VISITORS BRAVED A STORM ON OPENING DAY

Despite the bad weather, they raised over £1300 for RNLI! The Havant Borough Council Mayor Peter Wade states: “This is an excellent team who do vital work despite all being volunteers. The station is fortunate in getting such dedicated committed volunteers.”

Jonathan Bradbury Operations Manager agreed and said, “how grateful we are to both our crew members and the public who support us so well”.

The Hayling Island RNLI Lifeboat crews and visitors braved the rain and gale force winds on station Open Day, and by the end of the day had rescued a drifting yacht!

300+ people attended the event and enjoyed tea and cakes whilst also viewing rescue services such as, fire engines, coastguard vehicles and of course two lifeboats.

Reg Woodcock, the Southern Model Lifeboat Association presented to the station a scale model of their previous D-Class lifeboat. This accurate model was made several years ago by Tony Olliff, founder member of the group who died in March this year.

Both lifeboats launched and demonstrated their skills, but it was too rough to recover the D-Class safely, so
