With the aim to end the stigma around mental health, there are charities like the Samaritans who are set up to listen to people who need someone to talk to.

But the months following Christmas aren't always easy; pushing aside the excitement of the New Year, the worrying itch for the next payday begins to sit at the forefront of people's minds. The dark dreariness of British winter weather brings down the once merry moods and sometimes it's easy to brush off mental health – when really, it's one of the essential components of keeping healthy, yet people are still afraid to talk about it.

One in six people in the UK report that they have suffered from mental health issues – this does not include the people who choose not to speak about these issues, in which 40% of men will never discuss their mental health. While women are typically more open when talking about their mental health; they are twice as likely to go through a depressive episode. Especially with the days being shorter, the lack of daylight means people are far more susceptible to falling into the seasonal depression.

The Samaritan's mission is to make sure there is someone there for everyone; they encourage and promote connecting with people to talk about how they feel. They can be contacted by phone, email, letter, or even visited at one of their local branches – where a trained volunteer will be there to listen.

It's the small talk that helps save lives – sometimes just talking to a friend or someone who will listen can make a huge difference, and can evoke change and help someone's mental health improve for the better.

Four members of the Norwegian Red Cross Water Rescue Service visited Hayling to learn about how the RNLI work with water rescues and how they organise training.

The quartet are members of their Water Rescue Resource Group which is responsible for developing working methods and training.

They have a high number of volunteers relative to the Norwegian population (5.2 million) having some 300 teams manning 150 lifeboats. This compares to the RNLI having 238 stations 408 lifeboats for the UK’s 67 million people. Another big difference is that during the summer and at special times such as the lobster season, crews live at the base, whereas across the RNLI we have very few crews living at the station.

Like the RNLI they fundraise and get donations in a variety of ways but 25% of their income comes from the government. The response time for the RNLI crews aims to be less than 10 minutes from the first call. In Norway with the crews living at the base in Spring/Summer their response time is 5 minutes but in the winter, with large areas of inland water frozen and no crews living at the base the response time is 30 minutes.

Both organisations are dedicated to saving lives from drowning and with 370,000 lives lost worldwide both our teams of volunteers provide an essential service

HAYLING ISLAND JANUARY 2020 A NEW CARRIBEAN RESTAURANT OPEN ON HAYLING ISLAND Hayling Island is getting a taste of the Caribbean thanks to a brand-new restaurant that recently opened at the end of November.

“Such A Jerk”, is a Caribbean restaurant set up by Fiona Carby, and is now currently in the building that once was The Galleon Cafe on Fishery Lane.

PLANS FOR ‘STRIKING’ 13-STOREY UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH BUILDING TO JOIN POMPEY SKYLINE A 13-storey tower design has been announced for the University of Portsmouth’s new academic building near Victoria Park in Portsmouth. The new striking glass university building is set to tower above the skyline of Portsmouth and become an ‘iconic focal point’ for visitors to the city.

Fiona, with the help of her business partner Richard, the both of them set up ‘Such A Jerk’ from home in September, they prepared homemade meals and delivered them throughout the island themselves, with positive response from islanders.

Fiona states, ‘we work together better than a relationship. We’re best friends that are always going to work together. We consider each other partners in life.’

Starting out, the two held a few pop-up venues across Hayling Island, including the Hayling Café, where they offered sit-down dining to customers. Both were told of an opportunity to expand into their own premises at The Galleon Café and jumped on the opportunity.

The restaurant currently offers traditional Caribbean delicacies such as curried goat, jerk chicken and oxtail stew, as well as child-friendly meals. To find out more about ‘Such A Jerk’ check out their Facebook Page www.facebook.com/pg/suchajerkuk/

The new building will boast a large public space on the ground floor, a panoramic restaurant on the top floor and be over 160ft tall! The tower is due to be built on the site of the demolished 1960s era Victoria baths and will be finished in 2023.

‘The sculptured shape and circular windows create a really distinctive structure and at 13 storeys high it has been designed to be visible from a distance but to blend in with the local environment when viewed up close. Partner Keith Bradley said: ‘The building provides a real gateway into the city.”

The new University building will be built next to Victoria Park, off Anglesea Road and will include an open plan market hall-style foyer, a lecture theatre, two smaller lecture halls and ocular windows giving a view of the city.
