Therefore, as we steer towards a progressively digital world and continue to live in time that has us glued to our screens, we offer some tips to help you reduce your screen time and exposure to blue light, in hopes to avoid the feeling of digital fatigue:

1. Be mindful of your screen time – Allow Fatigue, as we know, is the overall feeling of tiredness or a lack of energy that is often traced back to our routines and behaviours. A new topic of discussion focuses on digital fatigue, who many are not even aware exists. Those days when your eyes feel dry, that dull headache you can’t seem to shift, neck strains and poor posture – those can all be signs you are suffering from digital fatigue, which can affect our bodies mentally and physically. Incorporate gentle movements and stretches to keep you nimble and try to factor in short walks to get as much fresh air as you can.

According to The Sleep Foundation, an excessive amount of screen time can affect the body’s levels of Melatonin, often referred to as the sleep hormone. The blue light emitted by screens - including phones, laptops and televisions can reduce the amount of Melatonin that is produced and in turn, disrupt the quality and duration of

plenty of breaks away from your device. Incorporate gentle movements to keep you nimble and factor in short walks to get as much fresh air as you can. Many devices now offer features that send alerts when you have reached your daily screen time limit.

2. Although the majority of devices allow

you to change the screen display to a warmer, more yellow hue to reduce eye strain, for when you need to use a screen, you can purchase a blue light screen protector for your devices or invest in glasses that block out blue light altogether.

3. Master

the night-time wind-down routine – consciously set aside time in the evening to wind down before heading to bed, ideally 1-2 hours. Try to steer away from digital devices during this time, to allow your mind, eyes and body to completely relax and de-stress.

Begin by gently simmering 2-litres of traditional cider on a low heat. You could use apple cider, or even experiment with a pear flavour. Leave the cider to warm all the way through for a few minutes. Next, gradually add the sugar to the cider. For the final festive touch, stir in two teaspoons of vanilla essence, a cinnamon stick, and some finely grated nutmeg. Carefully pour the mix into heatproof mugs, add your orange garnish and a final sprinkling of nutmeg and there you have it, the taste of Christmas in a mug!

Mandy Hickson

Her recently published book ‘An Officer. Not a Gentleman’ - takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride of her life, adventures and challenges of being a woman in a man’s world. Mandy has skilfully woven her extraordinary story of life in the air, with her own personal journey to create a compelling and intriguing book that you simply can’t put down. Meeting her husband Craig, who was one of the first pilots that she met in the RAF, also adds a very touching and human angle to her life story. You don’t have to be into aviation to enjoy the book, which reads like a feature film script, opening with Mandy rocking her jet through evasive manoeuvres and using flares to fool in-coming missiles. While at the same time dealing with the stomach punching effects from her G-suit, forcing blood to her brain to stop her from blacking out. Mandy Hickson is certainly no ordinary woman, as a tall attractive (6ft) blond with a gregarious and warm personality, she makes her mark on everyone she encounters. Her positive can-do attitude has helped her to achieve many of her dreams, including being one of the first female fighter pilots in the RAF flying a Tornado on the front line, completing three tours of duty and 45 missions over Iraq.

“All that training, all the heartache of not quite making the grade, the battles to prove myself, the sheer hard work and mind-twisting learning curves and struggles to find my way in the squadron, it was worth every single second,” commented Mandy.

Mandy’s fascinating career has been full of high points and great challenges including becoming the Squadron’s Combat Survival and Rescue Officer, working closely with the US, instructing Squadron members on Escape and Evasion tactics. Throughout her time at the RAF, Mandy was the only female aircrew and encountered some sexism along the way, overcoming and dealing with it with great dignity. One of her senior officers was complaining that she was very Amazonian in nature and not particularly feminine and buying pints in the mess when female candidates, on officer training, were instructed not to drink pints. YOU WILL NEED • 2 tbsp vegetable or olive oil • 1 red onion, chopped • 1 tsp cumin seeds • 1 tsp mustard seeds (any colour) • 1 tbsp medium curry powder • 100g red or green lentil, or a mixture • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks • 500ml vegetable stock • 400g can chopped tomato • 400g can chickpea, drained • ¼ small pack coriander (optional) • Natural yogurt and naan bread, to serve

METHOD

VEGETARIAN CURRY LENTIL & SWEET POTATO CURRY

Heat 2 tbsp vegetable or olive oil in a large pan, add 1 chopped red onion and cook for a few mins until softened. Add 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp mustard seeds and 1 tbsp medium curry powder and cook for 1 min more, then stir in 100g red or green lentils (or a mixture), 2 medium sweet potatoes, cut into chunks, 500ml vegetable stock and a 400g can chopped tomatoes. Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer for 20 mins until the lentils and sweet potatoes are tender. Add a drained 400g can of chickpeas, then heat through. Season, sprinkle with ¼ small pack coriander, if you like, and serve with seasoned yogurt and naan bread.

Preparation: 10 mins, takes 25 mins to Cook - Serves 2.
