Thatch in a lawn is like a thatched roof above the soil line; a thatched roof keeps a house dry by keeping the moisture at the top. A thick thatch layer in a lawn functions in a similar way. Thatch is formed of grass clippings, dead leaves, living stems and roots. It impacts the soil’s moisture levels which can encourage the grass to live in the thatch. Therefore, removal of thatch is necessary to make the roots grow deeper, to get the moisture in the

Autumn Sleep Tips As Autumn draws closer, we see the end of long, light nights and hot, stuffy bedrooms.

But although one set of sleep challenges are on their way out, the change to cooler weather may be the start of a new set. Here’s The Sleep Council’s advice to make sure Autumn doesn’t leave you fatigued and frustrated: Shorter days can mean less exposure to sunlight. This means lower levels of vitamin D, increased feelings of fatigue and disruption of the sleep/ wake cycle. Make sure to get plenty of sun on your face by opening the curtains as soon as you wake up and going for a morning walk.

While the crisp, chilly air can make it tempting to light the fire and crank up the heating, it’s actually best to keep the bedroom between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. This is because the body struggles to bring its temperature back down when you get too hot, causing sleep disruption.

Or if it’s too cold, the body will eventually wake you up – demanding extra layers of warmth and insulation!

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that alters melatonin levels, which play a role in the sleep/wake cycle and cause daytime sleepiness and

oversleeping. It is thought to affect one in 15 people between September and April in the UK each year. To re-establish a normal sleep schedule, exercise regularly, limit the use of gadgets before bed and keep bedtime/waking times consistent – even at weekends. Getting as much natural daylight as possible is also key, as it suppresses melatonin levels and boosts serotonin production!

While it’s easy to stick to salads and lighter foods during warm Summer months, try to avoid the temptation to ‘comfort eat’ heavier meals as the temperatures drop – particularly close to bedtime. Too much food, too close to bedtime could cause you to wake-up from heartburn and indigestion.

Also, decide whether your bed is still comfortable and supportive. If your bed is seven years old or more, then a new one could definitely be on the cards.

HAYLING ISLAND’S FAMOUS SUNFLOWER FIELDS

Stoke Fruit Farm on Hayling Island spread sunshine over the island and surrounding areas once again this year by opening up their amazing sunflower fields for the public to ‘pick their own’.

A VERY SUCCESSFUL RETRO REWIND FESTIVAL This August waterside leisure destination, Port Solent welcomed thousands of visitors to its first Retro Rewind event, a brand-new festival that celebrates the 40’s, 50’s, 60s and 70s, with a range of activities!

The music performed at the festical was an array of genres from different decades, everything from nostalgic bands, including Portsmouth-based retro covers band The Shakeups, rock ‘n’ roll band The Rock ‘A’ Toons, to swing singer Miss Amy Baker and her Swing Band, plus the sassy dynamic duo The Vintage Sweethearts.

At the festival visitors were able to explore and find an array of retro goods from lots of ‘old timey’ stalls as well as a vintage style market. The festival also had a fantastic display of classic cars for visitors to enjoy!

Plus, the fantastically fun, eight feet tall, Bridie the Tea Lady, who previously featured on Britain’s Got Talent, was dancing with her cake trolley.

Thousands visited, from inside and off the Island, the site in Northney in July and August, where you could pick 5 sunflowers for £4 and also make the most of the stunning scenery with a number of areas for wonderful photo opportunities.

The farm also gave visitors the option of donating their entry fee back as part of their ‘random act of kindness’ campaign.

Unwanted sunflowers were then donated to local causes, such as Wimborne Rest Home, who received 40 sunflowers to brighten up the home!

Along with selling fresh, local produce, Stoke fruit farm are also passionate about the environment and have been supporting ‘Plastic Free July’ by offering milk in glass bottles from a refill machine, and paper punnets of fruit and vegetables. Make sure you pay them a visit!

Lisa Fowler, Events and Marketing Manager, said: “We’re delighted the first Retro Rewind event was a great success. The amount of people dancing was incredible and they didn’t stop all day. It’s the first event of this kind we’ve held and it’s obviously proved really popular.”
