DIABETES: PROTECT YOUR FAMILY WORLD DIABETES DAY - 14TH NOVEMBER Thursday 14th November is World Diabetes Day and this year, it’s focusing on Families and Diabetes. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is an umbrella organisation of over 230 national diabetes associations in 170 countries. They raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family and promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes.

This year, the IDF is encouraging families to learn more about the warning signs of diabetes. Their research conducted in 2018 discovered that parents would struggle to spot this serious life-long disease in their own children. Despite the majority of people surveyed having a family member with diabetes, an alarming four-in-five parents would have trouble recognising the warning signs one-in-three wouldn’t spot them at all!

There are currently 1 in 2 people who live with diabetes that remain undiagnosed.

But being left untreated or unmanaged, diabetes can lead to life-changing complications including blindness, amputation, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke. Type 2 diabetes accounts for around 90% of all people living with diabetes.

Although it mostly affects adults, it is now increasingly being seen in children and adolescents. However, unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes can be prevented through simple life choices such as a healthy diet and increased physical activity.

The first step to preventing type 2 diabetes is knowing your risk. This World Diabetes Day, the IDF is encouraging everyone to learn about their risk of type 2 diabetes through a simple online test or questionnaire. Their goal is to have at least 1 million people around the world screened for type 2 diabetes by the end of November 2019 through their #Test2Prevent campaign.

Each year, The Royal British Legion encourages the nation to come together to honour and remember the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces community. For 2019, the British Legion encourages everyone to 'Remember Together' to commemorate the service and sacrifice that many friends, allies, and Commonwealth nations made alongside Britain in defence of its freedoms, values, and way of life.

There are no restrictions on when you remember, but the main focus of Remembrance in the United Kingdom is in November, during Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War, began at 11am on 11th November 1918. “Armistice” is Latin for “to stand (still) arms”. To this day we mark Armistice Day with a Two Minute Silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month.

During November, millions will mark their remembrance with the Poppy symbol. This is because, during WW1, vast amounts of land was blasted, bombed and fought over repeatedly. Previously beautiful landscapes turned to mud, creating bleak and barren scenes where little or nothing could grow.

However, there was a notable and striking exception to the bleakness; the bright red Flanders poppies. These resilient flowers flourished in the middle of so much chaos and destruction, growing in the thousands upon thousands.

In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote his now famous poem after feeling so moved at the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields.

In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

GUNWHARF CELEBRATES CHINESE FESTIVAL, GOLDEN WEEK Last month, Gunwharf Quays celebrated the Chinese festival, Golden Week, with a range of traditional Chinese displays. Golden Week is a traditional week-long holiday in China, which begins with Chinese National Day and celebrates the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Traditional events include a country-wide national festival with street decorations, holiday shopping discounts, as well as the longest national holiday of the year, seeing millions of Chinese people travelling across China and the globe. On Sunday 6th October the Portsmouth Chinese Association joined the festivities showcasing a range of traditional Chinese displays.

Opened by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, the event included a Chinese dance routine, singing and Tai Chi. Yvonne Clay, Senior Marketing Manager at Gunwharf Quays, said: “Golden Week was a brilliant opportunity for us to celebrate with the Chinese community in Portsmouth, and we gave all our visitors the chance to enjoy the festivities. We’re delighted that our guests all had a wonderful experience.”

The annual Round the Island Kayak Event was postponed in September due to high winds but found weather window on 12 October.

On a calm but wet day 41 kayakers set off from the Lifeboat Station to paddle round Hayling. Once round Eastoke Point they had a smooth trip along to the Inn on the Beach where a few had fun coming ashore in the gentle breaking waves. (pictured Baz Marsh and son Lewis) Two teenagers had to retire as they had found the going tough but the remaining group set off for Langstone Harbour and a stop at Langstone Sailing Club. As they then came back down the eastern side of Hayling they met a little wind and some small waves and this was a challenge. All however got back unaided to the Lifeboat Station with Tim O’Brian from Milton Keynes first home at 14:00, closely followed by Ashley Padmore and Russel Saunders both from Hayling.

Tim said ‘It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and the last leg was the most difficult.’

Organisers Mark Pannell (Fire Service) and Jules Hewson (RNLI) said ‘This was a great day with everyone doing well despite the light rain.

There was a great atmosphere of camaraderie and we look forward to the sponsorship funding rolling in. See you next year!’
