DONATE YOUR UNUSED FOOD THIS WINTER AND CHANGE LIVES WITH A REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR… Winter can be a hard season for everyone, but it’s particularly difficult for many local families who struggle to make ends meet and have no idea where their next meal will come from. Here at The Directory Group, we want to help those in need, and we’re hoping you’ll join us in providing local families and food banks with food boxes this year. Last year we collected 150 reverse advent boxes, let’s see if we can top that this year! Just a few jars and tins from your cupboard will make a huge difference in providing a reverse advent calendar.
WHAT IS A REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR? Unlike the chocolate advent calendar we see at Christmas, reverse advent calendars are designed to give something back to those less fortunate. Each day, you add a non-perishable food item to the box/basket until you have 24 items ready to donate to those less fortunate.
HOW TO TAKE PART? Taking part is simple. All you need is a sturdy box/basket, and then each day leading up to Christmas you add a new item. The idea is that you add 24 items, just like an advent calendar.
WHAT TO INCLUDE? When planning your box, think of staple foods that will feed a family. Items such as tinned and jarred food (including meat), pasta, rice, biscuits, UHT milk, baby formula, fruit juice, and anything else that has a long shelf life (no fresh goods please). Once your box is completed, drop off to our office at 1 Viceroy Court, Bedford Rd, Petersfield GU32 3LJ, or we can arrange to pick it up if you can’t get to us. Lay the turkey breasts onto a foiled baking tray and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle lightly with oil and cook for 30-minutes (or until cooked through). Once cooked, cut into bite-size squares and set aside. Make up your stuffing according to the packet details and set aside. Roll out your pasty into 10 x 10cm squares. You should be able to make 15 squares from your pastry.

Using a pastry brush, lightly spread mustard and cranberry sauce onto each square, and then add the turkey pieces, a slice of mozzarella and stuffing on top.

Fold the four corners the pastry square into the middle to create your parcel, and seal by brushing egg across the top.

Transfer the parcels onto a baking tray and cook for 15-20 minutes at 200 degrees until the pastry is golden and puffed.

If you wish to freeze your parcels, simply put into a freezer bag before cooking, and take out to defrost the night before you wish to cook them.

50ml vodka (either traditional vodka, or a flavoured vodka such as vanilla or chocolate will give additional flavour)
25ml coffee liqueur 25ml of espresso
10ml of gingerbread syrup For decoration Coffee beans
Ginger biscuits (crumbled)
Begin by making an espresso, either with a coffee machine or by adding 20ml of water to 5ml of instant coffee. Set this aside to cool slightly.
Shake for around 30 seconds, and then strain into a chilled martini glass. Sprinkle a handful of coffee beans and crushed ginger biscuits onto the drink and serve. If you’re not a lover of ginger but like the idea of an alternative espresso martini, why not swap the gingerbread syrup for vanilla, peppermint or orange? You’ll still get the lovely kick of coffee, but with a sweetness to suit your own preference!

For the mince mixture, add all the ingredients into a medium pot and bring to the boil and leave to cool at room temperature. Heat the oven to 180oC. To make the pastry, cream the butter and sugar with the paddle attachment, on high speed. With the motor running, add the egg yolk and mix until incorporated. Lower the speed to 1 and add the flour. Mix until dough just starts to clump, but don’t over work it. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured board, and gently work to form a ball. Roll the dough out to 5mm thick, and cut into circles 8.5cm in diameter. Line a muffin tray with the pastry discs and fill with mince mixture. Use a 5cm diameter star cutter to cut out stars of the remaining pastry and place on the mince pies. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden around the edges. Leave to cool completely and dust with icing sugar to finish.

It may sound obvious but having an opendoor policy enables staff to feel more comfortable approaching their manager. When staff feel they can talk to those in charge about concerns or uncertainty, there is less room for stress to build up, and everyone is on the same page.

These DIY stockings are easy to make, can be personalised to your individual style, and will look stunning hanging along the fireplace! Begin by drawing a stocking shape on a piece of cardboard. Depending on how large you want your final stocking to be, we recommend cutting a shape that measures roughly 20x50cm to make a medium-large finished product. Transfer the shape onto your fabric of choice and cut out twice. Stitch the two shapes together either by hand or using a sewing machine (remember to leave the top of the stocking open so you can put your presents inside). Once you have stitched the edges, take your faux fur and cut to the same width as your stocking, and either glue or sew to the top of the stocking. The final step is to personalise your stocking to your own preferences! If you’re a keen embroiderer, you could use embroidery thread to stitch on your own snowflakes, or alternatively you could use other pieces of fabric to create a festive pattern. To hang your stocking, simply attach a piece of twine or ribbon to the top.

WWI CENTENARY COMMEMORATED IN PORTSMOUTH those who fought and lost their lives in the war including Funeral Co-ordinator James Wiltshire-Bowles’s Great Uncle The display also included an original copy of The Evening Post announcing that the War had ended, a helmet worn by one of the soldiers and ammunition that was used during the war, along with some photos of soldiers. Window displays of poppies and memories are on show across Portsmouth as a message of thanks to all who fought in the First World War
“We had one lady pop in whose father fought in the war. He was one of the lucky ones that came home, he was injured but he made it home.
The public displays of thanks took place at Southern Co-op funeral homes in Portsmouth and beyond.
“She got a bit emotional saying that this time of year he always wept at how thankful he was that he survived but then also for the friends and colleagues he lost. She passed on her thanks that the display had such meaning.”
At the Eastney Road branch in Southsea, a photo was proudly displayed of Funeral Co-ordinator Sally Chudley’s grandfather who was a sub lieutenant in the Royal Navy Reserve during the Second World War. At the Fratton branch in Portsmouth, the window was decorated to remember all

In Copnor, local school children helped to decorate the window with images from a drawing competition in relation to Remembrance Day being displayed in the window.
