IT’S YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH DAY

19th September 2022 Mental health concerns for young people have multiplied in recent times, with 2022 recording the highest number of under18’s being treated for a mental health illness.

On top of that, suicide remains the fourth leading cause of death for 15-19-year olds, whilst 6 in 10 young people say that they are experiencing difficulties with thier mental health. Most shockingly, only a third are able to access the effective treatment they need.

Whilst many things you may notice regarding the young people around you, things such as irritability or fluctuating moods, can be attributed to normal teenage behaviour. The NHS website sets out some signs that your teenager could be struggling. They include: Depression:

• Continuous low mood • Frequent tearfulness • Little/no enjoyment of activities that were once important to them • Disturbed sleep patterns Eating Disorders:

• Complaints of being fat, even though they are normal/underweight • Being secretive about eating habits • Becoming anxious or upset when asked to eat.

Self-Harm:

• Unexplained cuts, bruises or cigarette burns, usually on the waist, arms, thighs or chest.

• Keeping themselves fully covered, even in hot weather

Though times continue to be difficult for young people, and many parents or carers may find their teenagers’ behaviour difficult to understand or find having open communication on the topic challenging, stem4, a charity that supports young people to build positive mental health, is proud to be the founder of Youth Mental Health Day in the UK. First starting in 2020 and taking place annually, the day aims to get young people and those who support them talking about how to improve mental health.

By getting young people engaged in discussions and activities about how to improve their mental health, YMHD goes beyond raising awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.

It further aims to tackle the heart of the issue by giving young people a voice and agency to take steps towards positive mental health.

Helping Petersfield reduce carbon emissions and protect nature Petersfield Climate Action Network (PeCAN) is a charity built to raise awareness about climate change, helping people in the local area to reduce their carbon emissions and protect nature.

We registered as a charity in December 2020 after being set up by a group of local residents who wanted to make a difference by supporting decarbonisation and nature projects in the community.

Our funding comes from the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Scheme via the National Energy Foundation and the South Downs National Park Authority.

Some of our projects include No Mo May, Plastic Free July, fruit tree planting and a toy swap.

In July, we organised Petersfield’s first ever Eco Fair, in conjunction with Petersfield Town Council, raising awareness of climate change and offering a wealth of environmentally friendly tips to collectively reduce our carbon emissions.

We looked at key topics such as low waste living, home energy, green travel and nature.

As the nation prepares for a hike in energy bills this winter, we are doing all we can to support people by offering energy-saving tips in the home as well as giving advice about grants and subsidies that people may be eligible for.

We organised Petersfield’s first ever Eco Fair, raising awareness of climate change and offering environmentally friendly tips to collectively reduce our carbon emissions.

One of our biggest schemes is the Petersfield Area Super Homes (PASH) project, which involves having a Whole House Retrofit Plan carried out on your home to enable you to see what changes you could make to reduce your carbon footprint.

A professional retrofit coordinator will come to your home and carry out an independent, impartial assessment looking at things such as loft insulation, double glazing, ventilation, cavity wall insulation, installing solar panels and getting a heat pump.

The scheme is not just for Petersfield residents - it runs across the whole of East Hampshire and parts of West Sussex too.

We are always keen to welcome volunteers.

Game, Set and Match The everlasting poise and performance of Serena Williams.

While the subject of retirement for Serena Williams is always one on the lips of interviewers, it is to the 40-year-old’s unending credit that she perseveres on in a sport that has given her so much, all of which she has paid back many times over.

From recurrent injuries, mental health worries, the exhaustion of over two decades on the circuit, the distractions of media work, and the small matter of a young child waiting for her at home, no-one would begrudge the Florida-born star – the greatest female tennis player to have ever lived – the decision to start a new career.

“I just always come back to that phrase, ‘you

are a long time retired’, and that really speaks volumes for who I am and the love I have for this sport,” she begins. “Of course, on occasions I have grown tired of it, and certainly I value my downtime away from the court more than ever before; but if the idea of taking my racket out there, of competing, of giving it my all, still excites me, then why would I possibly want to do anything else?”

Indeed, Williams’ ambitions on the court have evolved almost as much as the athlete herself. A perennial winner who has chalked up 23 Grand Slam event wins, including seven at Wimbledon, time away from action – notably with husband Alexis, who she married in 2017, and daughter Alexis Jr – has altered her perception of success.

“Before it was always titles, titles, titles,” she says.

“You find that does change a little over time. Of course my drive is as intense as ever, but just making it back to competition is now a win; and climbing the world rankings again is a huge thrill for me.

“I have found it really interesting to see my perspective and my perception change, and I love that.”

Williams, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, admits that the dichotomy between her professional and her personal life is one that is hard for some to fathom, but then again, isn’t it always tricky to define living icons.

“Whatever I believe in I fight for, and I will do it again and again until it’s right. My daughter brought out a new form of expression in me, and that was really important.

It was a really humble experience; but also one that made me want to reach out and express this new me.

“Previously, I never really cared what people thought of me, but I definitely don’t now!

“I am me, and that’s enough.”
