Sleep triggers changes in the brain that solidify memories which strengthen connections between brain cells and transferring information from one brain region to another. Researchers have tested this process by teaching people new skills and then scanning their brains after a period with or without sleep.

Remember a flexible memory system is best. The essential elements of successful memory work also include the following: • Be organised. Information that is organised is easier to find.

• Be physical. Learning is an active process. Get all of your senses involved.

• Be clear. You can reduce the background noise that may interfere with the recall.

• Be smart. Intelligent application of memory techniques can save work.

Method

Fit the Food Grinder with the coarse screen and mince the beef into the Kenwood Bowl. For a finer texture pass through the screen again.

Divide into 4 and with floured hands shape into thick burgers. Either brush with oil and place under a preheated grill for about 4 minutes on each side, or shallow fry over a medium heat.

Meanwhile make the fried onion rings, dip the rings first into the egg white and then into the flour. Heat 2.5cm oil in a pan and fry for 1-2 minutes, until golden.

Serve burgers garnished with onion rings accompanied by toasted crusty bread, mixed salad leaves and the remaining onion rings.

With summer being the perfect time of year to whip up a seasonal dessert, we have found for you a delicious recipe that we are sure will evoke taste buds this summer!

The ‘Mixed Fruit Elderflower Jelly accompanied

by Lemon Sorbet’ dessert is a delicious way to make the most out of all types of fruit when in season. The desert is vibrant, light and refreshing whilst working delightfully to cleanse your palate after your meal.

Mix in lemon 1. To make the sorbet, boil 100g of caster sugar with 100ml of water. and pour into a juice and fresh lemons for a zesty taste. Put in an ice cream maker plastic tub and freeze until firm then whisks and freeze again.

2. To make the jelly, add 600g of mixed fruit, put into a pan with 5tbsp of elderflower cordial and 3tbsp of water. Mix and leave to stand for 20 minutes whilst stirring occasionally. Cover the pan tightly with clean film and place over low heat and swirl gently. After 10 minutes take off heat and leave for 5 minutes and then pour mixture into a fine nylon sieve over a bowl. Leave it to drip through to form a clear jelly.

4. To serve, dip the moulds in hot water for a few seconds and turn them out. Spoon sorbet by the side of the jelly or serve sorbe t on top of jellies if set in glasses. Plastic pollution is one of the most significant threats to ocean health worldwide. In spite of society’s many efforts to properly dispose of plastic waste, between 4 and 12 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the ocean each year, enough to cover every foot of coastline on the planet. And that amount is expected double in the next ten years.

‘To me, it’s really important that we have children come down to learn more about the sea bins. One of the schools that came along to the launch went back to tell everyone else at the school about it, which is absolutely fantastic’.

The installation of a new sea bin will not only serve to protect the environment naturally but will also educate people on the uses of sea bins for years to come.

NINETY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD FORMER RAF PILOT FULFILS SPITFIRE AMBITION

A few days before the RAF Centenary celebrations in London, a 97-year-old former RAF pilot from Kent fulfilled a lifelong ambition at Goodwood Aerodrome, when taking the controls of a Spitfire in the skies over the South Coast.

Colin Bell was invited to the Boultbee Flight Academy at Goodwood last week for the half-hour dream flight, and afterwards he was met by The Duke of Richmond, who spoke to him about his experience. “I have had this fantastic experience at Goodwood, in flying a Spitfire,” said Bell. “It’s something I have always wanted to do and today was the culmination of that ambition. It has been a fantastic experience and the organisation here is unsurpassed.”

Colin served in WWII on operations as a Mosquito Bomber Pilot. Born in 1921, he joined the Royal Air Force towards the end of 1940. Following Pearl Harbour, he was retained by the American Army Air Corps as an advanced single-engine flying instructor responsible for training American and British Cadets in a Harvard.

Africa. After the war, he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor. He was made a Freeman of the City of London on 13th January 1987 and of the District of Huntingdonshire on 17th August 2013.

Having driven himself to Goodwood, Bell remarked on his flight; “I must admit that I left it to Chris [Hadlow, Boultbee Spitfire pilot] to do the aerobatics, but I did do some flying around to the best of my ability. Chris did a ‘roll off the top,’ a ‘barrel roll’ and a ‘slow roll.’ The Spitfire is a lighter aircraft than the Mosquito, but from the point of view of manoeuvrability, I don’t think there is much to choose between the two. But it was an absolute privilege to be in a Spitfire today.”

NEW BRENDONCARE CURLING CLUB OPENING AT EMSWORTH COMMUNITY CENTRE: Brendoncare is a registered charity, dedicated to improving the quality of life for older people through care homes, nearby car facilities and social clubs. You will be pleased to know that they are currently running a new Brendoncare Curling club at Emsworth Community Centre from the 12th October every Monday from 2 PM to 4 PM. As we get older, long-standing friends and family can fade, and people can begin to feel lonely, isolated and excluded from the community. There is an increasing need for services to support the older generation in the hope that they can retain their independence for as long as possible!

On his return to the UK in 1943, he converted to twin-engine Mosquito Bombers and joined 608 Squadron (Pathfinder Group) based at Downham Market in Norfolk.

During his tour of operations, he carried out 50 bombing raids over Germany.

Brendoncare Clubs are dedicated to providing older people with opportunities for social interaction and to meet new friends in a welcoming and supportive environment.
