In your edition of The Directory for July we focus our attention on 70 years of the NHS, which was established in England on the 5th July 1948. At some point in our lives we have all relied on the service of our excellent health system, so our article on its anniversary concentrates on the people behind the organisation and the brilliance it provides.

Elsewhere we have a full-page feature on the importance of protecting our environment by making the Solent area free from single use plastic. Locally, volunteers at the Final Straw Solent do an admirable job at engaging businesses by making their mark against the problem disposable plastic is having.

Phill Jupitus From poetry to stand up, the crowds have enjoyed it all…

Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Live at the Apollo, BBC Radio 6 Music and QI are a handful of programmes where you may recognise Phill Jupitus.

The Directory Group’s Samuel Poole speaks to the comedian about his career entertaining millions of people.

Born at Newport, Isle of Wight, Phill Jupitus was raised by his single-mother until his first step dad came along at 4-years-old. Eventually moving to Barking, Phill lived with his grandparents to spend his young life in Essex, before winning a scholarship to a public school, near Ipswich, where he completed his education and eventually began his career.

Working for the Department of Health and Social Security for five years, his talent writing political poetry presented an avenue for him to be in the spotlight at various music gigs.

He said: “When I went into the civil service, I learned I had a loose ability to write poetry. Also, at the time, I was drawing cartoons for mates,

and through doing that I met a poet who then put me on stage. It was never my intention to be on stage.”

Phill’s poetry performances throughout the 80s were applauded which enthused a desire to try stand up comedy. Moving into the early 90s, his work steadily became recognised leading to an opportunity to be a part of the Buzzcocks panel first aired on BBC television in 1996.

Speaking about his performing, the comedian said: “I think an audience can tell when there is truth behind what you are saying. I think you do a better job at storytelling when you base it on truth. I think as I get older the audience get a purer version of what I am really like compared to the early days where people would perceive me as bigger and more brash, but now what I do is more me.”

Hampshire has provided several venues in which Phill has performed.

Complimenting the crowds, his desire is to stand-up in front of people once again, at his first hometown in Newport.

Play your part in making Hampshire plastic free!

We’ve all seen the headlines about the huge problems single-use plastics are having on the environment. People across the nation are continually being urged to act against the use of the synthetic material.

But what is the campaigning all about?

Around 8 million tonnes of plastic are poured into the ocean every year. These are broken down into extremely small pieces of plastic debris known as microplastics.

Microplastics pollute the environment as a result from the disposal and breakdown of consumer products and industrial waste.

This is harmful to wildlife, the environment, and potentially us. By working to reduce the use of single-use plastics we are steadily protecting our environment.

Locally, voluntary groups are having a huge impact on the attitude people are having towards their use of plastic.

The Final Straw Solent, now working with more than 100 local businesses, are doing an excellent job at making them fight

against the use of single-use plastics.

Port Solent has pledged to swap plastic for paper, businesses in Emsworth have replaced plastic bags for environmentally friendly carriers, and Havant Borough Council is encouraging residents to make swaps.

Bianca Carr, head volunteer at The Final Straw Solent, says working with local people will help the group achieve its goals.

She said: “Collaborating with local businesses such as Port Solent will be incredibly successful and will help us to achieve our goals of one day making the Solent area, at the very least, free from single-use plastic straws.”

Playing your part in making the Solent area plastic free can be achieved simply by making some straightforward swaps; replace your plastic water bottles for reusable materials; decline straws when offered – unless there is a paper alternative; avoid excessive food packaging, for example, purchase loose vegetables.

Founded by parents of a deaf child more than 35 years ago The Elizabeth Foundation is a national charity based in Cosham supporting young children with all degrees of hearing loss learn to listen and talk.

Having a hearing loss can significantly affect a child’s ability to communicate. However, with modern technology and appropriate intervention during their early years, most deaf children can learn to communicate clearly and effectively using spoken language.

RAISING CASH TO SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL HOSPITAL WARD OR DEPARTMENT Thousands of people will be holding tea parties up and down the country to raise cash to support their local NHS Ward this month.

The fundraising team at Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Cosham, are calling on people from across the area to take part in the Big7Tea to fundraise for an area of their choice.

The Big7Tea is on the 5th of July and is a national event to raise money for NHS hospital charities. Even though the main event is at the beginning of this month – other fundraisers will be taking place elsewhere throughout July.

The event celebrates 70 years of the NHS and is an opportunity to raise cash for local hospitals.

Fundraising could include hosting a tea party or a street party with friends and family, or encouraging your work colleagues, or local community to get together for some cake and a cup of tea.

Portsmouth Hospitals Charity aims to support the patients of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust by improving existing facilities and by providing additional equipment, supporting research programmes and innovation in the development of services and education to both patients and staff.

Community cycle ride to raise cash for charity

It assists with trial tenancies and temporary housing support. Apart from general support for children, it runs a nursery and every year organises holiday play schemes.

Two charities will benefit from money raised by a group of cyclists from around the area later this month.

The Denmead Charity Cycle Ride, which takes place on Saturday 21st July, is raising awareness and cash for Hannah’s Holiday Home Appeal and The Roberts Centre.

The cycling event is open to anybody of any age and ability and is not a race but a route for good causes. Fun and fundraising will be the focus of the day.
