Meteorites land at Ditcham Park School Pupils from Ditcham Park School got their hands on rare samples of moon rocks and meteorites at an exciting and awe inspiring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Fair held at the school at the end of term.

These included a 1.2 billion-year-old piece of Mars rock and a 4.3 billion-year-old meteorite. The lunar samples were collected in the 1960s and 1970s during NASA’s first space missions.

The students were entertained by a fantastic rockets, fire and explosions show by ‘Wonderstruck’ and toured an exhibition hall full of top names in STEM businesses such as Google, Estee Lauder and Siemens.

Begin by gently simmering 2-litres of traditional cider on a low heat.

You could use apple cider, or even experiment with a pear flavour.

Leave the cider to warm all the way through for a few minutes.

Next, gradually add the sugar to the cider. Depending on how sweet you’d like to the drink to be, we recommend around 75 grams in total.

One thing that always signifies the beginning of winter to us is that first sip of something mulled. Whether we’re huddled around the fire with our slippers on and favourite mug in hand, or pottering around Christmas markets in our warmest coat with our hands clasped around a takeaway cup, there is something magical about a warm alcoholic drink. Now is the time to indulge in mulled drinks of all varieties, and especially this season’s must-have mulled drink which is cider!

Cut two large oranges in half, and squeeze the juice into the mix. TOP TIP: Save the skin of the oranges to use as a garnish – simply wrap the skin around a straw, hold in place for a few seconds, and you’ll have your own spiral decoration!

For the final festive touch, stir in two teaspoons of vanilla essence, a cinnamon stick, and some finely grated nutmeg.

Carefully pour the mix into heatproof mugs, add your orange garnish and a final sprinkling of nutmeg and there you have it, the taste of Christmas in a mug!

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, it’s time to heat up your pan and create a new winter dish filled with a warming fusion of sweet and spicy ingredients.

This ‘Sweet Potato Risotto’ is a healthier alternative to the classic risotto, with a delightful combination of sweet potatoes and peppers, and complimentary spices.

Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees. Peel 2-3 sweet potato spuds, and chop roughly.

Part boil the potato for around 10 minutes, and then take off the heat and drain. Dice the potatoes into bite-sized squares, and spread out onto a baking tray. Lightly cover with oil, and season with salt, pepper and paprika. Roast for 30 minutes, or until the potato begins to brown.

While the potato cooks, simmer vegetable stock over a low heat, and fry onions and diced red pepper in a little butter until the onion turns translucent and the peppers begin to soften. Add salt, pepper and paprika to the onion mix, and fry for another 2 minutes.

Take the pan off the heat, and leave to rest for 2 minutes. Dish the risotto into bowls, and sprinkle with goat’s cheese.

THE CLANFIELD CHALLENGE To name a few:

The organisers of The Clanfield Challenge event would like to thank everyone that took part in the 2018 races! The money raised for the local community will be verified soon!

For those who are unaware, The Clanfield Challenge is made up of 5 individual race routes. These are a mix between 20, 12, 5, 2 and 1-kilometre races. All races are in Clanfield and the money generated is used to fund local community projects in and around Clanfield.

Attending the event is also a perfect way to spend the day with friends and family! Whether you are participating, supporting or just looking to have a great time, there are plenty of things to do!

Great food & drink including a BBQ, Ice cream, local ales, Prosecco, coffees/ teas and other soft/alcoholic beverages.

Face-painting for the little ones or big kids.

Musical and dance entertainment.

LEADING ENERGY FIRM INSTALLS VEGETABLE GARDEN FOR CLANFIELD COMMUNITY PRE-SCHOOL Volunteers at Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) have made a powerful impression on the staff of Clanfield Community Pre-School.

They gave up their time and energy to install a vegetable garden for the children!

The addition will give the children a chance to grow their own produce, while also teaching them about where their food comes from. Chair of the preschool’s committee Kirstie Pearson hopes the development will inspire a new generation of gardeners.

She Continues: “SSEN, have saved the day for us! We can’t wait to see all the children enjoying the new outside space.”

Clanfield Cricket Club had a successful visit to the picturesque ground at Hawkley, winning by 30 runs.

Batting first, Clanfield lost wickets regularly but eventually posted a competitive 181 for 8. Main contributors were Chris Wheeler (31), Mike Collins (50) and Ben Cox (20 not out) with handy runs also coming from John Windebank and Chris Buckle.

When Hawkley batted, they were always struggling against some economical bowling from Clanfield. All the bowlers kept things reasonably tight, the only batsman causing trouble being S Cunningham who hit 4 fours and a six in a breezy 34, before being one of Kevin Goodship’s 3 victims at wicketkeeper.

Hawkley completed their 40 overs on 151 for 7 with the leading wicket takers being Ben Cox (2 for 16) and Matt Bradley (2 for 7).
