Wear it Pink day is a great opportunity to rally friends, family, colleagues and classmates together to raise money for Breast Cancer Now, an organisation whose research aims to detect breast cancer earlier, treat it efficiently, and work towards preventing the disease altogether. Since their first event in 2002, Breast Cancer Now has raised over £31.5 million, and on October 19th you can help contribute even more to their fantastic cause. Begin by gently simmering 2-litres of traditional cider on a low heat. You could use apple cider, or even experiment with a pear flavour. Leave the cider to warm all the way through for a few minutes. Next, gradually add the sugar to the cider. Depending on how sweet you’d like to the drink to be, we recommend around 75 grams in total.

One thing that always signifies the beginning of winter to us is that first sip of something mulled. Whether we’re huddled around the fire with our slippers on and favourite mug in hand, or pottering around Christmas markets in our warmest coat with our hands clasped around a takeaway cup, there is something magical about a warm alcoholic drink. Now is the time to indulge in mulled drinks of all varieties, and especially this season’s must-have mulled drink which is cider!

Cut two large oranges in half, and squeeze the juice into the mix. TOP TIP: Save the skin of the oranges to use as a garnish – simply wrap the skin around a straw, hold in place for a few seconds, and you’ll have your own spiral decoration! For the final festive touch, stir in two teaspoons of vanilla essence, a cinnamon stick, and some finely grated nutmeg. Carefully pour the mix into heatproof mugs, add your orange garnish and a final sprinkling of nutmeg and there you have it, the taste of Christmas in a mug!

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, it’s time to heat up your pan and create a new winter dish filled with a warming fusion of sweet and spicy ingredients. This ‘Sweet Potato Risotto’ is a healthier alternative to the classic risotto, with a delightful combination of sweet potatoes and peppers, and complimentary spices.

Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees. Peel 2-3 sweet potato spuds, and chop roughly. Part boil the potato for around 10 minutes, and then take off the heat and drain. Dice the potatoes into bite-sized squares, and spread out onto a baking tray. Lightly cover with oil, and season with salt, pepper and paprika. Roast for 30 minutes, or until the potato begins to brown. While the potato cooks, simmer vegetable stock over a low heat, and fry onions and diced red pepper in a little butter until the onion turns translucent and the peppers begin to soften. Add salt, pepper and paprika to the onion mix, and fry for another 2 minutes.

Take the pan off the heat, and leave to rest for 2 minutes. Dish the risotto into bowls, and sprinkle with goat’s cheese. Rate our risotto? It is important not to touch the babies with your bare hands as the scent may lead the mother to reject the babies. If you disturb a nest and there is no mother present then initially try putting everything back as it was and wait to see if mum arrives. It may be necessary to act quickly and pick up the babies but please ring for advice before taking this course of action.

CATHERINE IS CURRENTLY PREPARING FOR HER 10K CHALLENGE! Catherine, from Alton who suffers from hearing loss, is currently preparing to tackle the Great South Run. Catherine has finally been able to wear hearing aids thanks to a technological breakthrough. She can’t thank The Lip-Reading Service supported by the Association of Teachers of Lip Reading for Adults enough! They have provided her with free lip-reading classes at Burgesmede House in Petersfield while she waited for the right hearing aids. Catherine States: “I’m already totally deaf in one ear. Lip reading is a skill that will support me in case my hearing deteriorates, or even if my hearing aids stop working”. She aims to raise money for The LipReading Service, to help others who suffer from hearing loss. She believes that running the 10K Great South Run in Portsmouth will aid her in doing so. She Continues: “Practising the skill of lip reading, has also given me additional

confidence especially when I am in crowded, noisy places, as it can become difficult to hear.” Catherine also admitted: “I am no runner! I began training for the run a year ago. SHAKESPEARE WENT DOWN RATHER WELL AT THE JOLLY FARMER IN ALTON

The Alton members of Cycling UK dedicated one of their regular Saturday afternoon rides to the memory of former club mate Malcolm Seal, who died last year. To celebrate Malcolm’s time with the club, a route was devised to include as many of his favourite hills in the area as possible. These include Snode Hill, Smugglers Lane, Soames Lane, Stapley Lane, Galley Hill and Brightstone Lane, among others. The ride covered 36 miles and approximately 2,000ft of climbing! The group was delighted that Malcolm’s son, Graeme, was able to ride with them on this occasion. After they completed the cycle, they stopped at the Gilbert White’s House and Gardens in Selborne for light refreshments and to meet Malcolm’s wife, Maureen. It was a fitting tribute to a much-missed cycling friend. Cycling UK Alton holds an afternoon ride every Saturday and newcomers are welcome. Several pub gardens in Hampshire have been providing the perfect backdrop for some classic performances this summer, by the Open Bar Theatre Company! One of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, delighted audiences at The Jolly Farmer in Alton. The play promised, “more pomp that the Royal Wedding” and “more partner swapping than Love Island”. The actors involved the audience in several plots and received a standing ovation after three superbly delivered acts. Meteorites land at Ditcham Park School Pupils from Ditcham Park School got their hands on rare samples of moon rocks and meteorites at an exciting and awe inspiring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Fair held at the school at the end of term. These included a 1.2 billion-year-old piece of Mars rock and a 4.3 billion-year-old meteorite. The lunar samples were collected in the 1960s and 1970s during NASA’s first space missions. The students were entertained by a fantastic rockets, fire and explosions show by ‘Wonderstruck’ and toured an exhibition hall full of top names in STEM businesses such as Google, Estee Lauder and Siemens.
