Let’s not forget the birth of our new Prince, who is the third child and second son to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. There’s currently a lot of excitement within the Royal Family – it’s great.

TO STRESS MEN DO NOT NEED TO FACE DEPRESSION ALONE Stress is something many men are affected by at some point in their life. By not controlling stress, mental health issues such as depression can arise. This month we highlight the issue depression, caused by stress, can have on men and how we can play a part in supporting.

Typically, men are more vulnerable to the effects of stress as they may perceive depression as a weakness. Even though we are living in a society in which there has been so much change towards the gender perceptions of both male and female, emotion among many men continues to be regarded as instability.

This is especially the case in developing countries where traditional gender roles are more strongly endorsed.

In fact, while more women have suicidal thoughts, a greater number of men die by taking their own lives.

Why? Many men are guilty for not truly expressing their emotion. They are known not to speak with each other about how they are feeling.

Men may identify they are stressed but fail to address the problem.

The charity suggests men are twice as likely as women to have nobody to rely on for emotional support. This is the average to around one in ten men. But there are plenty of methods to gain support.

Speaking to someone whom you trust can hugely help with addressing a concern with your mental health. Many specialists believe there is healing when telling people about what you are experiencing.

Identifying what may be the route cause of your depression is also important; once you know why you feel the way you do, you can address the problem for the better.

If you’re still feeling down or depressed after a couple of weeks, talk to your GP or call 111.

We need to support every man who may be facing a mental health problem.

If you believe you are experiencing a mental health problem, advice can be found at www.mind.org.uk. Information on dealing with depression can be found at www.nhs.uk.

Mind, the mental health charity, say one in three men (32%) have poor mental health because of their job.

Alton & Alresford • May 2018 Edition LOCAL PEOPLE SET TO PARTICIPATE IN WALKING FESTIVAL THIS MONTH Thousands of people are expected to stretch their legs at the Alton Walking Festival throughout the whole of this month.

The event, overseen by Alton Town Council, is now in its fifth year and has grown from being held on one weekend each year, to now spanning across the full 31 days in May. More than 40 different routes are available.

The events page for the Festival states: “The Walking Festival is now one of the town’s featured events, popular with residents and attracting visitors from all over the country.

“The Festival offers a range of walks that will give you the opportunity to explore the town and the beautiful surrounding countryside and acts as a gateway to the South Downs National Park.”

New to this year’s event is the Six Hills of Alton – dedicated in memory of Robert Athis, a local resident who died and desired for all visitors to enjoy the farreaching views from six vantage points around the town. Every route will have a Walk Leader or a Walking Group. They have been working tirelessly with the Town Council to prepare for the Festival. The

event will also aim to encourage those who have not considered walking before to actively log their progress to being able to complete a 5km hike by the end of the month. Walking is an excellent exercise at supporting with maintaining a healthy weight and strengthening bones and muscles.

May is also National Walking Month. All walks must be booked in advance.

ANNUAL WATERCRESS FESTIVAL SET TO RETURN THIS MONTH The national acclaimed Watercress Festival returns to Alresford later this month.

The event, which will take place on Sunday 20th May, is a celebration of the crop which has given the town its reputation as the ‘Capital of Watercress’ for more than 150 years.

The area became the centre of the watercress industry in 1865. At its peak, in Victorian times, Alresford had its own railway line which was given the pseudonym the ‘Watercress Line’.

Its primary purpose was to transport the handpicked bunches of watercress from the beds that proliferated in the area direct to Covent Garden Market. The Festival will use the same Watercress Line to transport visitors.

Fun and tasty attractions will be available to thousands of people on the day.

Watercress sausages, burgers, bread, fudge and ice cream in addition to watercress beer and gin will be on offer from more than 80 stalls. Nearby pubs and restaurants will serve watercress infused dishes especially for the festival.

Local chefs will be delivering cookery demonstrations throughout the day.

Mouthwatering recipes will inspire many people to be creative in the kitchen. Even though watercress is not exclusive to the UK - historians teach that the ancient Greek Hippocrates - the fathers of modern

medicine - chose the site of his first hospital to be near a running stream where watercress grew so they could treat their patients.

The British have adopted the plant from an early stage in history and continue to use it in a substantial way. This country is one of the largest consumers of watercress.

A World Watercress Eating Championships will return to this year’s event. The main sponsor of the Watercress Festival is the NFU Watercress Association, which since 1936 has taken care of the interests of watercress farmers from the UK’s two biggest watercress growers: The Watercress Company and Vitacress.

The festival will commence the National Watercress Week and is supported by Alresford Chamber of Commerce.
