Could you offer hope to those affected by the Chernobyl nuclear explosion this Christmas? Nearly 33 years after the Chernobyl nuclear explosion of April 1986, thousands of second-generation children and their parents living on contaminated lands of Belarus and Ukraine are implicated with severe health complications resulting from the deadly radioactive particles dispersed from the disaster. Many of those affected are prone to developing thyroid cancer, bone cancer, leukaemia, a number of other conditions and pass the risk of illness onto their children through DNA and breast feeding. There hasn’t been another catastrophe quite like Chernobyl, but that’s not to say that something can’t be done to help those living in the affected areas. A huge way you can help the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline is to volunteer as a host family for child victims, to give them a 4-week recuperative break away from Belarus and Ukraine. Living with a host family for just a few weeks has been proven to dramatically improve the health of children impacted by the disaster, and the parents of these children are hugely grateful for this initiative. Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline have introduced a new project in Belarus called Project S.H.A.R.E (Support, Harmony, Alliance, Rejuvenation, Education) with a vision to bring together families with similar experiences and backgrounds. The project will be based in

Bobrovichi Village, an uncontaminated area untouched by radioactive fall out which hosts a disused school and ancillary buildings. There hasn’t been another catastrophe quite like Chernobyl, but that’s not to say that something can’t be done to help those living in the affected areas. This will be a fantastic alternative facility for those in Belarus and Ukraine who are not able to come to Britain for respite. When complete, many families affected by Chernobyl will be able to visit the new centre, and enjoy a much needed break especially those with children in palliative care. You can help with S.H.A.R.E in a multitude of ways. You can choose to give the gift of your time throughout the year and assist with carpentry, plumbing, first aid, or simply by putting the kettle on. You can also help by donating building materials (new or second hand) and giving away furnishings for the kitchen and bedroom areas. As 2018 draws to a close, we at HART are still busy with lots of mouths to feed, boxes to clean out and health checking to be done. Having admitted hundreds of animals this year, the hospital is still full of sick and injured wildlife, and at the time of writing, at the limit of 80 hogs in at one time. We want to say a huge thank you to The Directory Group for all your support this year, for helping us to spread the word about how to help our local wildlife; as well as a massive thank you to our supporters, volunteers and members who have helped us in our vital work this year, we literally couldn’t do it without you. Turkey, stuffing & mozzarella parcels With so many get-togethers, parties and celebrations throughout December, it’s the perfect time to bring out a signature Christmas canapé that you can whip up quickly and wow your guests with. These turkey, stuffing and mozzarella parcels are the perfect festive finger food and won’t take hours to make, meaning you can get back to the party!

The Method...

Lay the turkey breasts onto a foiled baking tray and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle lightly with oil and cook for 30-minutes (or until cooked through). Once cooked, cut into bite-size squares and set aside. Make up your stuffing according to the packet details and set aside. Roll out your pasty into 10 x 10cm squares. You should be able to make 15 squares from your pastry.

Cut & Keep!

Using a pastry brush, lightly spread mustard and cranberry sauce onto each square, and then add the turkey pieces, a slice of mozzarella and stuffing on top.

Fold the four corners the pastry square into the middle to create your parcel, and seal by brushing egg across the top.

Transfer the parcels onto a baking tray and cook for 15-20 minutes at 200 degrees until the pastry is golden and puffed.

If you wish to freeze your parcels, simply put into a freezer bag before cooking, and take out to defrost the night before you wish to cook them.

Ingredients (to make 15 parcels) 6 large turkey breasts (or vegetarian alternative such as Quorn). 200g sage and onion stuffing (or vegetarian alternative such as mushroom stuffing). 250g of mozzarella 500g pre-made puff pastry (or roll your own) 3 tbsp of cranberry sauce 1 tbsp of English mustard 1 egg

The festive fusion of gingerbread combined with a traditional espresso martini The clink of celebratory glasses is one of the greatest sounds there is as you toast the festive season with your loved ones. You can truly wow your guests with this signature cocktail, which combines the sweet taste of gingerbread to complement the flavour of the coffee.

(makes two cocktails)

Cocktail shaker and strainer Ice cubes

50ml vodka (either traditional vodka, or a flavoured vodka such as vanilla or chocolate will give additional flavour)

25ml coffee liqueur 25ml of espresso

10ml of gingerbread syrup For decoration Coffee beans

Ginger biscuits (crumbled)

Begin by making an espresso, either with a coffee machine or by adding 20ml of water to 5ml of instant coffee. Set this aside to cool slightly.

Shake for around 30 seconds, and then strain into a chilled martini glass. Sprinkle a handful of coffee beans and crushed ginger biscuits onto the drink and serve. If youâ€™re not a lover of ginger but like the idea of an alternative espresso martini, why not swap the gingerbread syrup for vanilla, peppermint or orange? Youâ€™ll still get the lovely kick of coffee, but with a sweetness to suit your own preference!

They currently farm 5 acres of Lavender producing essential oils and dried lavender, which is incorporated into their beautiful range of products sold in the farm shop which is open all year round as well as online via their website, ranging from bath and body lotions to Lavender chocolate, tea and honey. Alongside the Lavender products, the shop also sells unique and handmade gifts.

Along with the Lavender Fields shop there will be a number of local craft stalls joining to make a great opportunity for that last bit of Christmas shopping.

This year sees them hosting their first Christmas shopping event on Saturday the 15th December from 4 – 7pm. Along with the Lavender Fields shop there will also be a number of Hartley Business Park tenants participating as well as local craft stalls joining to make a great opportunity for that last bit of Christmas shopping, it will also help raise money and awareness for the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline charity who are based at Hartley Park Farm. Lavender Fields will also be supporting the Eagle Radio Christmas Toy Appeal, acting as an official donation point for much needed toys to make Christmas a little bit brighter for less fortunate children across Hampshire and Surrey. They have run ever-growing Open Weekends in July for the past 12 years, offering cream teas, ploughman’s lunches, as well as other refreshments. DONATE YOUR UNUSED FOOD THIS WINTER AND CHANGE LIVES WITH A REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR… Winter can be a hard season for everyone, but it’s particularly difficult for many local families who struggle to make ends meet and have no idea where their next meal will come from. Here at The Directory Group, we want to help those in need, and we’re hoping you’ll join us in providing local families and food banks with food boxes this year. Last year we collected 150 reverse advent boxes, let’s see if we can top that this year! Just a few jars and tins from your cupboard will make a huge difference in providing a reverse advent calendar.

WHAT IS A REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR? Unlike the chocolate advent calendar we see at Christmas, reverse advent calendars are designed to give something back to those less fortunate. Each day, you add a non-perishable food item to the box/basket until you have 24 items ready to donate to those less fortunate.

HOW TO TAKE PART? Taking part is simple. All you need is a sturdy box/basket, and then each day leading up to Christmas you add a new item. The idea is that you add 24 items, just like an advent calendar.

WHAT TO INCLUDE? When planning your box, think of staple foods that will feed a family. Items such as tinned and jarred food (including meat), pasta, rice, biscuits, UHT milk, baby formula, fruit juice, and anything else that has a long shelf life (no fresh goods please). Once your box is completed, drop off to our office at 1 Viceroy Court, Bedford Rd, Petersfield GU32 3LJ, or we can arrange to pick it up if you can’t get to us. ALTON’S REMEMBRANCE DAY PARADE organisations to the Cairn War Memorial. A two-minute silence was held at 11.00am and 12 white doves released at the end of the ceremony as a symbolic act of peace.

Over two thousand Altonians gathered to remember those who gave their lives in the service of their country on Sunday 11th November, marking the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I. Residents and visitors packed the High Street, coming together to pay their respects during the morning ceremony and service, led by Reverend Andrew Micklefield, at the Cairn War Memorial outside the Assembly Rooms. The day’s proceedings began with a parade from the Market Square of uniformed youth groups and other

Alton resumed its commemoration in the evening by taking part in “Battle’s Over” the nation’s tribute coordinated by Pageantmaster Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, marking 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of World War I. At 6.00pm St Lawrence Church pews were full to capacity with local parishioners where they gathered for a special Armistice Day Service led by Reverend Andrew Micklefield and the Parish of the Resurrection. With the Church Service and Readings concluding at 6.30pm everyone gathered together in the churchyard as the names of all 224 local residents who fell in battle during the war were read out by the Reverend Andrew Micklefield, Alison Crow and Peter Johnson.

A FANTASTIC START TO THE FESTIVE SEASON FROM DUMMER FAIR Thanks also to our sponsor Savills and their team who greeted everyone at the entrance, then the legion of hard working, loyal volunteers, the Friends of Treloar’s, our SAP volunteers and everyone at the Dummer Cricket Centre who made the event possible. I don’t want to miss the Treloar team either who parked their normal work routine to help on the day. It has been another fantastic year for The Dummer Fair, raising an outstanding £32,000 so far in aid of Treloar’s. The annual fundraising event is a firm favourite for shoppers across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire. Held over two days, around 1,000 shoppers attended across the two days and bought from a wide selection of artisan and independent businesses, ranging from crafts to food, clothing and gifts.

“All the profits from the Fair are donated to the Treloar Trust which runs a School and College for severely disabled children and young people in Holybourne, Hampshire.” Jon Colville, Director of Fundraising at Treloar’s added: “An event like this takes many months of planning so we have to give huge thanks to the committee, who not only planned and managed the event but worked so hard on the day

All the profits are invested in our young people so a wonderful and slightly different way of raising money for Treloar’s. We are very grateful to everyone who supported the event.”
