240g butter 330g granulated sugar 4 large eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract 120g flour 150g unsweetened cocoa powder 3/4 tsp salt

120g of butter, at room temperature 200g icing sugar 90g unsweetened cocoa powder 60ml of milk 48 edible candy eyes 24 assorted red candy for noses 48 mini candy canes or chocolate covered mini pretzels for antlers

Instructions for brownie:

Preheat oven to 180 Â° C. Line a 13-inch x 9-inch baking pan with foil leaving a 2-inch overhang. Coat with non-stick cooking spray.

In microwave-safe bowl, melt 240g of butter. Stir in sugar until dissolved. Add eggs and vanilla, stirring until blended.

Stir in flour, 150g of cocoa powder and salt until a batter forms.

Spread evenly in a prepared baking tin and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean.

Let cool for 15 minutes in tin. Using foil overhang, transfer brownie to wire rack and let it cool completely.

Meanwhile, beat 120g of butter until creamy. Combine icing sugar and 90g of cocoa powder in bowl and whisk until blended. Gradually add icing sugar mixture until blended. Add milk and beat until creamy and smooth. Spread frosting over top of cooled brownies.

2. Cut brownies horizontally into three sections.

• 180ml chilled whipping cream • 240ml freshly ground coffee (preferably a mild roast) • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1 1⁄2 tablespoons powdered sugar • 5 teaspoons ground cardamom • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 tablespoon brandy • 1 tablespoon sugar • 1.5 litres of water

Using electric mixer, beat whipping cream in a large bowl to soft peaks.

Add powdered sugar and brandy; beat to peaks.

Place ground coffee, cardamom, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in coffee filter. Using spoon, mix gently.

Add water to the coffee maker and brew according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Divide coffee among 8 cups, then garnish each with a dollop of whipped cream and serve immediately.

DONATE YOUR UNUSED FOOD THIS WINTER AND CHANGE LIVES WITH A REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR… Winter can be a hard season for everyone, but it’s particularly difficult for many local families who struggle to make ends meet and have no idea where their next meal will come from. Here at The Directory Group and Beautiful South, we want to help those in need, and we’re hoping you’ll join us in providing local families and food banks with food boxes this year. Last year we collected 150 reverse advent boxes, let’s see if we can top that this year! Just a few jars and tins from your cupboard will make a huge difference in providing a reverse advent calendar.

WHAT IS A REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR? Unlike the chocolate advent calendar we see at Christmas, reverse advent calendars are designed to give something back to those less fortunate. Each day, you add a non-perishable food item to the box/basket until you have 24 items ready to donate to those less fortunate.

HOW TO TAKE PART? Taking part is simple. All you need is a sturdy box/basket, and then each day leading up to Christmas you add a new item. The idea is that you add 24 items, just like an advent calendar.

WHAT TO INCLUDE? When planning your box, think of staple foods that will feed a family. Items such as tinned and jarred food (including meat), pasta, rice, biscuits, UHT milk, baby formula, fruit juice, and anything else that has a long shelf life (no fresh goods please). Once your box is completed, drop off to our office at 1 Viceroy Court, Bedford Rd, Petersfield GU32 3LJ, or we can arrange to pick it up if you can’t get to us. ALTON AND ALRESFORD DECEMBER 2019 1940’s ‘CHRISTMAS LEAVE’ RETURNS TO THE WATERCRESS LINE

INTERESTING ART LECTURE ‘WOWS’ CROWD At the very end of October, Treloar’s was delighted to host its annual Art Lecture at their campus in Holybourne. They welcomed Oliver Everett, a renowned lecturer and Librarian Emeritus of the Royal Library, Windsor Castle. Educated at Cambridge University, Everett was also a former Librarian and Assistant Keeper of the Royal Archives and Assistant Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales, 1978-80; and Private Secretary to Diana, Princess of Wales, 1981-83.

The popular event ‘Christmas Leave’ will be returning in December to The Watercress Line, inviting guests to experience the atmosphere of Christmas time on the railway. Visitors will be joined by military and civilian re-enactors across the Watercress Line’s period stations. Alongside these re-enactments, there will be an Air Raid Precaution display at Alresford, as well as, 1940’s live music, wartime games at Alresford goods shed and much more for families to enjoy. Annually, The Watercress Line are blown away by the popularity of their period ‘Christmas Leave’ event. If you’re looking to make memories with your family and friends, visiting the Watercress Line is a brilliant end to the festive period.

Everett enthralled an audience of over 100 guests as he explored two great collectors of art and one dastardly disperser: Kings Charles I & II and Oliver Cromwell. Guests also enjoyed the chance to purchase some of Treloar’s fantastic array of Christmas gifts and try their luck with the raffle which was generously coordinated by the Art Lecture Committee.
