Holiday advice We in Neighbourhood Watch in Spain know we all like to feel safe and secure, especially when on holiday with family or friends and keeping safe is something we all need to think about, but some mes take for granted. Personal safety is all about planning ahead, thinking about the possible risks and taking realis c, prac cal steps to avoid them if possible. No amount of precau ons can make us completely safe but we can learn to avoid many of the dangers and learn how to react quickly when we are at risk. The following simple, prac cal ps will make for a safer holiday.

Burglars prefer to break into empty proper es so, close all windows and doors whenever you leave your home. Many people forget to close their windows, especially in hot weather.

• If you are ren ng a property and going out at night, you might want to draw the curtains and turn a light on so it looks like someone is at home.

• Keep all valuables out of sight.

• When going out only take those items you may need.

• Always be aware of your bag, mobile phone, purse etc. and keep them in sight especially when ea ng or drinking with friends when you are most likely to be less vigilant.

• In busy areas like markets, shopping centres etc. make sure your personal belongings are held to the front making it difficult for “pick pockets”.

• If using a hire car remove the s cker from the rear window, you do not want to adver se you are on holiday ( holiday makers are a prime target for thieves) and keep all personal items in the boot.

• These simple ps go a long way to having a safe and secure holiday.
